When you said 'acoustic treatment', took me back to MTV unplugged
The music @ 13:36 sounds like it was playing from the oddly grounded speakers in the Sigma 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You should use aircraft landing lights as inboard high beams . Very bright and have that clear JDM look . Used to do it to my rally datto 1600s. Back in the day !
It already has a set :D
Benny, common ground stereo's were popular back in the day. Cheaper to make. As copper was very expensive for car manufacturers.
Its fine in old systems with low power output (5 to 10watt per channel).
Once MOSFETs hit the market and started pushing 30 to 50watts per channel, common ground speaker wiring was abandoned due to noise caused by chassis grounding.
FYI that OEM stereo will be worth decent money to someone wanting to restore a Sigma
It’s actually a Holden stereo ( which is worth a lot to someone restoring a VC SL/E or Brock as it’s the correct part number) I’ve got a JDM Unit to fill the hole, just waiting on my 5 day air freight from interparcel which is onto it’s 4th week in transit......
There isn't a headunit on the market that makes a true 30-50w (or 52w for fully sick Sony Xpold HU's) RMS. Whilst music is dynamic, the most you'd ever expect to see is around 18w.
@@BennysCustomWorks Seems legit. Start throwing queries to couriers. Had issues with brake pads from SparesBox. Courier held onto them for a month, just sitting in their warehouse/distribution centre. Didn't deliver until after they were pushed directly.
I love the fact that you took the time to give everything a bit of love and a clean, I know it's not much but it shows the old thing of while it's out may aswell make it better then it was. A true lover of cars will do that others won't.
100%. You can always tell someone who's worked on cars for years when they take the time to do those little jobs because "it's apart anyway"
That cars dash shaping is tremendously cool
The speaker ground wiring used to be a thing. My N12 pulsar was the same.
I had an old N11 Datsun, it was my first car. When the clutch went out I swapped in an N12 engine & trans. I used to punish that poor car. It would get at least 30mpg no matter how hard I drove it, and gas was only 99¢ a gallon. The only trouble that I ever had with it was the threads, on the bolts that held the shaft mounted rockers down, pulled off. I grabbed 5 replacement bolts from the junkyard and it kept going. I miss that car.
I'm surprised benny's never come across it before, even R31 Skylines have it
That sound deadening kit looks good. I'm restoring a few vehicles at the moment , so i will definitely check out that gear. 👍
Trufit Resomat is a better product as it's removable and easily reapplied. Non butyl, non toxic, super high quality, australian made.
Had a 1980 GH SE sedan in red with the reclining back seat. Great car bought it new for $7600.00 and kept it for 11 years. Fitted after market integrated air conditioning and fitted a different carby, drilled holes under the air cleaner , upgraded the am radio to am and fm , put rear louvre on, driving lights on front. Rust appeared in the front quarter panels cause the drain holes filled with rubbish and retained the muck all wet. But I loved that car. Seeing you rebuild this , is great for the memories. Thanks Benny look forward to seeing you finish it . Cheers
All my old Colts were wired like that but they were AM only.
iirc the cars all used a single console, so the Auto had the same position as the Manual. To swap you remove a plate for the for-aft auto and the boot can be fit to the opening left.
I converted a Colt into a racecar, and that factory sound deadening was well anchored in place.
Really liking this series Benny. Rebuilt a Sigma with my old man when I was a teenager. Learnt to drive in it too. Snapped the handbrake cable on my first lesson.
And yes. Earth return speaker wiring was super common in the 80s. Great for introducing alternator whine.
Must say that the Mitsi looks much more substatial, and styled. The dark floor is great with the orange body. Wouldn't it be sweet if the rest of the interior was also matching. It would lend the car a more contempoary look. And the plate could do with a surround. It's a period resto, and those gentle changes you're doing are bringing it back to life and leading me into a nostalgic reverie. Of course whatever you do will be worthy.
This build is super cool.. also giving me a couple of ideas to for my 83 Subi wagon. 😁
Nice work man..
This is my favorite build ! The new carpet looks so much better and I can't wait to see the rest of the interior done. Leave the windows cracked to let out that new carpet smell .
One man, one camera, no bull, great soundtrack, tremendous amount of knowledge. Keep it up Benny 🤙
Old headunit used a common ground for speaker outputs, very common in pre 90’s cars
Job's a good'un, I'd love to own a Sigma like that!
Makes me want to restore a classic of my own!
Smokey Dawson backseat? Nice.
Seen this rolling into Mittagong the other day and it looks the goods mate , the Lil silver dmax approves 👌🏾
The D-mon :D
@@BennysCustomWorks yeah mate the Little soot monster
@@tobysullivan8420 what was in the tray? Front seats?
@@BennysCustomWorks Recaros for it , no one likes bouncing around at 200+
Loving more stuff on the SIgma!! Keep up the awesome work Benny!!!
Hey Benny, how about an episode showing how to set up a Bluetooth receiver that will work with one of the input channels on that old head-unit? Smooth mp4 tunes through your retro stereo will make for an even sweeter cruiser!
We may have something like that in the works
@@BennysCustomWorks Nice, looking forward to it.
How freaking cool is the sigma. It's just so old school and sic. A mate put that sound deadening all through his old 88 twin cam rolla and it made a Huge difference and made the exhaust sound alot better inside with less drone aswell, really good stuff and its not massively expensive either.
Very interesting build this one, thanks Benny
To Sound deaden a old Car is the best thing you can do.
Its get 200% better to drive around, yeah its getting 10-30kg heavier but its worth it in my opinion.
Its not a Race Car where every kilo caunts.
When i get my 1974 BMW 2002 in the future i will put a fuck Ton of Sound deadening in it.
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Been an audio installer since late 90's, and common speaker earth was an actual thing, at least it is not a BMW with a fader in the centre console!
This brings back lots of memories of doing the same interior jobs on my 1978 Mazda 323. It was nearly all the same colours, very similar construction and style
Maybe think about any rare plastic parts, Reinforce them with sheet metal where they could Crack by hitting the floor, (if it would be a hard to replace them).
That is an absolute champion of a car. Like it a lot. An as it gets older things begin to sag, just like real life Benny.
This sigma is going to look deadly once u r finished Benny I can’t wait to see her all done keep smashing the gd work bloke 👍
All good with the speaker wiring, a "common ground" used to be really 'common'.
Great video Benny, I bought stuff with your old sparesbox link so I hope you still get a bit from it.
Great shirt Benny
Time-lapse at the end was a nice touch! Loving your attention to detail and the care you put into all your work Benny, keep it up!
Yeah the sigma
The interior is looking sharp, well done. The interior plastics look in great shape too
love the music you put into these episodes
The new carpet looks beautiful, I did a carpet swap in my old gemini years ago, don't have the car now, but it is a time consuming task 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼loving the series
Loved the fact you cleaned everything, I did that when I was stripping my GC8
it is just satisfying watching / doing a deep clean and refresh on a interior. i spend a full day doing it to cars i just bought.
Negative to Chassis Ground(Return) works just like when you Jump Start a car.
It is so the circuit inside doesn't die from arcing, also provide less voltage drop. Plus, it's better for the car when your battery dies since your light and radio will slowly fade away first before the plugs.
The alternator is what's running your car basically.
That was nice work on the interior. Even though I live in the US I do like the styling of the old JDM cars. The car is looking amazing.
Perfect timing! I just finished welding up the trans tunnel in my cressida, next job is seam sealer and sound deadning!
Thanks Benny. Weird wow and fluttter simulated in the last song. Have to be old to know what that was
Wonderful job on the carpet. Looks mint.
One great side benefit from all that sound deadening is the additional thermal insulation. I fitted out my HX Kingswood sedan with a similar product and an offcuts of some household carpet underlay and daily driving it in forty degree plus afternoons was way more bearable.
I feel a sponsorship from Keeps coming up
?
@@BennysCustomWorks You’re outgrowing your hairline a bit Benny. I’ve seen numerous youtubers get a sponsorship from Keeps for that.
Looks so much cleaner. Nice work
Noice! Coffee and a new BCW vid. What a way to start the morning
I used both types of car builders underlay like this on my escort, good quality product. But the moulded carpet from another supplier wasnt so good 😬
I used the same stuff I’m my LX torana, great product and really helpful company if you have any problems
What's in the spray bottle you used for cleaning up the plastic parts? It did a great job
Love it Benny, that sigma is looking smick as. Used to cruize around in my teens in my mate 2.6ltr sigma was a lil rocket
Love it man looks sick as with the black carpet 👍🏼👌🏻
Great video Benny. I'd be cautious using thinners on an older car as it could lift the acrylic paint, if 2k then no issues but will dissolve acrylic 1k paint.
that was how they use to wire up speakers
loving the Sigma
Loving it!!!
Regarding sound deadening, areas where the metal body has been stamped into shape doesn't require much deadening at all due to the resonant frequency in that section of stamped metal is different to a flat surface area. In areas like this you can avoid the butyl/rubber aluminium backed sheets and use a spray on deadener to save cost and weight and still achieve a good result. Jaycar actually has a very cost effective sound deadener they sell, very similar performance to Dynamat etc in my opinion.
Much like the carbuilders product we used in the video .
@@BennysCustomWorks I haven't had much experience with the CarBuilders product in my time. Mostly Dynamat and Stinger. When I saw that Jaycar had their own version I thought I'd give it a go in my Hilux front doors and am very happy with the results. I might give the gear you used a go for my rear doors and floor pan a go to see how it rates. My exhaust gets tiresome on the highway at low engine loads.
Also, I'm looking to supercharge my Hilux 3.4L V6 petrol. You wouldn't have any leads on second hand TRD Hilux blowers or a decent equivalent would you?
@TerribleGamer thanks dude, yeah I've been searching high and low to try and piece together a kit from a TRD which is a direct bolt on for the 5vzfe or M62 along with an ecu etc. Off the shelf brand new kits, from Magnuson (I think) are about $7,000 + labour which I'm not overly keen to commit to.
@TerribleGamer not bloody many is my guess! 😂
Love this sigma.. nice one benny 🤘🤘
Proper JDM flare too? :p
The old carpet looks like they skinned Mr Beans teddy bear and used it everywhere lmao
Benny! Put some new batteries in your boom box dude :-) Underlay underlay!
14.20 - the purity of the music 🙉
Loving the sigma
Go BCW👍🤔
Nice shirt haha
Benny it will ne better them new
Nearly 100k subs 👌
i am pretty sure you would know if you run over the carpet with a heat gun it will help mould the carpet the shape
Yes however it can also singe the carpet. I had planned on laying it in the sun however I forgot :(
SMICK RIDE BRUH!!
for the next time take the carpet out of the box and lay it in the sun........much easier to layout and mold to floor........ many carpets experience taught me
Was the plan however in my haste I forgot :(
13:46 has the music started playing backwards? Do I have a brain tumour? 🤮 what is going on?
play it on 1.25 fixed it.. lol
Play it on .5 I feel like I just travelled between dimensions.
Sort that music out Benny
I muted all but the first bit.
I wouldn't choose to listen to it, but I quite like that the video got pubilished with knackered music, the child in me is amused :)
What.. No 1 or 2c coins under the back seat?
efficient way of cleaning your interior, perhaps a tad time intensive though :P
Asam
The negative speaker wire going to ground will work as long as you don’t have a lot of power going to those speakers, I don’t think it’s a great idea but it would work.
Yes it was functional but not correct .
@@BennysCustomWorks perhaps 'negative' on the head units speaker outputs were noisy??? But then again, I've fixed up some weird and whacky stuff people have tried to do when installing car audio gear. I'd like to thank Strathfield Car Radio and Autobarn installers for all the cases of beer I've received over the years for fixing their sub par workmanship.
@@BennysCustomWorks There was a time when the thought was to reverse the wiring on opposing speakers to cancel the "push" from each side... Not sure if it worked. Want to borrow my AC/DC cassettes?
@@BennysCustomWorks oh I agree, all I can think of is how many ways you could start a fire doing it like that.
@@pv3566 I paid for a Strathfield install in 1991. Two years later I pulled that head unit out and I could not believe how crap the install was!! Wires twisted together and taped very poorly. The whole thing was only held in by the face plate which was not even attached to the dash. No wonder it rattled. Rear speakers were only held in with two screws because they cut the parcel shelf hole too large.
Blasphemi t-shirt. Righteous.
Your nugget or a customer car? Never heard of it . Interesting little thing....
Mine :)
At least it’s not a positive ground charging system, talk about messing with your mind.
The speaker wiring is very strange, but I have seen it like that before. It can be annoying as it's ripe for interference. Not noticeable before, but now you've sound deadened the car, you're going to hear it. I would run some new twisted pairs to each speaker, and get an aftermarket head unit that looks OEM.

Anyone know the name of the song that starts at 13:40
Whats that snazzy track at the end?
Another good episode ,just ditch that music .
Beeeeeeennnnnnyyyyyyyy
Wot, no 70s colour scheme any more? 😱
😁
Trust me , the 70’s won’t be leaving the interior ;) just put a black carpet in for practicality
You make me want to build a better car
What songs are these???? Moogs????
What was the weight of all that new sound deadener?
Approx 15kg
What's the music 1:25 - 5:00?
Benny, when is that poor headliner getting fixed or replaced?
Will be retrimming it along with the seats
@@BennysCustomWorks, noice! 👌🏻
WOW NOT EVEN AN INTRO AD. nice change
The ad’s help us cover production costs ;)
@@BennysCustomWorks yeah i don't mind the ads. i understand about the costs. i was just taken back by no ad at the intro. there's usually one on every video.
Can smell that old carpet (had an 81 5 speed Sigma as my first car, and replaced the carpet from a wreck back in the day).
Does yours have the reclining rear seat?
NVM- i watched the video further
in the day i must have smashed 30 of these sigmas in pine forests
Moist
I had to mute that music omfg
Bad luck Mozart.
I think we can all agree that music towards the end of the vid sucked ass
