Benny, working for a car dealer, long ago, I really learned how valuable a "creative" parts person can be; FIAT was my brand, shipping vast quantities of spare parts and warehousing them wasn't in that plan. the guys down in our parts dept were fantastic, finding analogues and usable replacement parts from other sources- six weeks was a minimum turnaround time for parts not already in country (90% of the time). Parts people who really work those vast catalogs of info about the parts and write their own "A is used by car Z, but under another name , this part is also used in car B and common" list. Having serviced Datsuns, later Nissans in the '70s, I always wondered when somebody would make a line of strut parts that would let you build almost any strut or coil over type device; I am still waiting. In the late 70's early 80's Mitsubishi gave Police in SA some factory turbo charged Sigma's. These were unmarked and did go! Not sure what happened in the end. I enjoy the videos, thanks Cheers

It was a blow thru carby system with a vac advance/pressure retard dissy. I loved that car, rebuilt engine twice. It was all unknown stuff in those days. Nobody wanted to touch it. years later people converted them to efi and were getting into 11s. One guy used to run a club car at lakeside. Its biggest claim to fame was it's role as the heroin dealers car in underbelly. They only came in 2 tone, silver n black, red n black, blue n black. Had mine for nine years, wasted many a V8 in it, lots of fun.

Watching this video for inspiration on a conversion I'm about to do. You're getting inserts for a SV21 Camry, and the project I'm converting is a SV25 (AllTrac) Camry! I'm using ST185 front inserts up front and SW20 MR2 front inserts on the rear.

(im doing a little build on mine with a 77 LB Lancer, but also completely clueless on what im doing) and can 100% agree on the difficulty of finding front shocks, took me about 3 months going back and forth from shops all over the country to find some. Have heard that s13 silvia front end is a pretty close swap over. from memory on a very very old forum. the only change was drilling holes for the strut top. so you can then get things like adjustable control, more "tuneable" coilovers, bigger brakes/caliper.

Just in case this helps you. Cusco still makes camber plates for the 1980s Era Lancer Turbo. Most Mitsubishi mounts are very similar so I was able to use the Lancer Turbo camber plates in my older Colt Lancer and only had to drill and tap two new holes to convert the stud pattern of the upper mount. (I could be wrong about this next part) but I seem to remember that Sigma struts are supposed to be a bolt in upgrade for the Colt Lancer so there's a chance the same camber plates will work for you with very minimal modification.

Camira inserts or early commodore go into early sigma struts after your shorten the legs for more travel when lowered. I've got custom GH green leg struts in my GC Galant with Camira inserts, adjustable coil overs and custom camber/castor adjustable top hats
At the risk of sounding like a comment section know it all, if you ever need to Google it etc, the main top retaining nut for the insert on a shock tube is called a "gland nut".
Those sigma look like the datsun 200b struts too benny. The pbr calipers and all except where they mount to ball joint. If you want lower tham Camry, z31 300zx work abd aw11 mr2 rear shocks ;)
Here in the uk when modding escort mk1/2 struts we also add a 3mm gusset to the bottom of the strut to the hub assembley both sides of the strut. An old rally car mod.
6 cyl BMW E30 front strut are 51mm too and there are weld on coilover conversion kits available you could have used too. Too late now but it may still be an interesting bit of information for later...'
Good work but you went about it the hard way. By using GH front struts (they are a direct bolt in) and are 53mm so much easier to find weld on sleeves. As for inserts, if you have GH struts you can use VB-K Commodore inserts or Camira inserts are the same but shorter. Adjustable strut tops are available from K-Mac
Most struts from this era are very similar. Just like most struts from today are similar. This is good because there are plenty of companies that make coilover conversions for that style. Techno Toy Tuning is a prominent name, but Datsport in Australia could probably help you as well. I'm sure there are many others, but I'm mostly into classic Datsuns, so that's where my knowledge lies.
@Benny's Custom Works if you are wanting something adjustable I've has a few sv21 camry, and mr2 rear shocks fit in the factory camry strut tube and. kyb still makes a 4 way adjustable shock for the sw20 mr2.
51mm strut tube width? thats the same as AE86, we use ST185 Celica inserts in our front coilovers setups, I choose the adjustable Bilstein's and shortened the strut by 50mm in length
Also you can use the GH sigma front struts with the bigger calipers that run the db1085 brake pads same as commodore they fit straight in must use the GH brake hoses tho
I don't know if 51mm struts are rare in the car industry (or were because I don't think anyone use this setup today). My e30 bimmers are 51mm struts, it's the same design. Shock insert in the strut. There were 2 sizes, 45mm for base models, and 51mm for 325i, diesels and Touring if I remember. The Sigma reminds me a lot of my dad's Galant, kids memories!

Love this video.... So your shock insert type will depend on its travel that will fit into the cut shock piping? And you cut off the piping from what ever measurement your trying to achieve from the middle of the guard to the top of the tyre. Making sure that measurement is set equally with the weld as the centre? Is that correct or even make any sense ?lol I'd love to try this as a fun project. Even though I could probably just go get some BC racing coils to fit my car already. I wonder if any machine shops would be able to thread out pipe with somecollars as coil over sleeves to fit on the cheap?
You could run a spacer between the sv21 shock insert and your standard gland nut, saves you some work in welding and it's what Celica guys do when lowering and using those inserts.

Nice- I used some flat wound helper springs to keep a little preload on the main spring so it didn’t flop around at full droop with no weight on the front

Does Al have an L300 4x4 van around Benny? I used an diff out of one and cut it down to fit into my scorpion as an LSD, bonus it came with disc brakes so I got a rear disc brake upgrade at the same time 😁😁
Welding into a thread can cause stress fractures. You should always remove threads before welding them. I was taught this by a Mechanical integrity specialist years ago.
I am not 100% sure. But that car looks a little like the Plymouth Arrow from here in the US. It was built by Mitsubishi for Plymouth. So you might want to look into that to see if you can source parts for it.

I’m just wondering why not just go to a modern strut it coil over, then use the spindle and brakes from a modern car, seems like you could just change the ball joint and find a tie rod end to match the taper of the new spindle it steering knuckle whatever you want to call it
XOZ Industries I did look at S13 front end conversion but as I’d already ordered wheels based on the sigma original geometry I didn’t want to change the track etc.
Hopefully they were GH struts and not GE, GH have a larger stub axle that take a Holden bearing making brake conversions much easier As far as inserts go, early Commodore fit straight in , there really is a far easier way to do coil overs in a Sigma than using a sleeve kit
Instead of having the threads turned off the other end of the coilover sleeve, why not just flip them upside down? Shouldn't need to thread the spring perch all the way past the bottom.

Have you heard all putting hydraulic oil in the shock tubes as you install the shocks? They say it's for better heat distribution.

*6 cylinder. Includes some 320i's, and all 323i, 325i's. Its the 4 cylinders that are smaller.
In my experience a KYB will out perform a Gabriel all day long . Obviously if they are both in good condition

Nathan Attwood it would have to be a 75mm spacer and the shock body would bottom out on the bump stop way too early in this setup

I’m just wondering why not just go to a modern strut it coil over, then use the spindle and brakes from a modern car, seems like you could just change the ball joint and find a tie rod end to match the taper of the new spindle it steering knuckle whatever you want to call it
XOZ Industries I did look at S13 front end conversion but as I’d already ordered wheels based on the sigma original geometry I didn’t want to change the track etc.

90% sure you can put a r31 lca, knuckle thing, brakes and shocks in a sigma. Just redrill 1 castor arm hole and use sigma top hat
thats what i thought as well, either the 31 or i think s13 as well. considering it for my 77 lancer once the funds allow me ahaha
Hopefully they were GH struts and not GE, GH have a larger stub axle that take a Holden bearing making brake conversions much easier
As far as inserts go, early Commodore fit straight in , there really is a far easier way to do coil overs in a Sigma than using a sleeve kit

Never had any success with Gabriel shocks, they don't tend to last long in my experience.

Instead of having the threads turned off the other end of the coilover sleeve, why not just flip them upside down? Shouldn't need to thread the spring perch all the way past the bottom.
Dallas Van Wyk the bottom side of the sleeve is larger OD than the thread so then there’d be no way to get the nuts on and off
