Funny story about these cars and cross member bolts. I know an old bloke that worked in the factory. The guy who was responsible for installing these bolt’s called in sick/ changed shifts, And his replacement couldn’t get these bolts in. The unusual thing was that all the bolts where defective, yet they where the same batch of bolts that they had been using for some time. Turned out that the previous guy would bring a 4 pound mini sledgehammer in his lunch box every day, and hammer these bolts in. So there is potential a few thousand of these cars with cross member bolts that where hammered in.
I did the same conversion in the early 90's. Found a tail shaft at the wreckers that fitted. The Mitsy parts guy made a parts list for the car from about 4 different models. (Imported Motor and gearbox).
Great to see the Sigma back on the hoist 😊, I had a new SE 2 litre 5 speed model in 1980, red in colour , nice bone velour interior with reclining back seat. Fitted a Webber carby, triple tone air horns, upgraded the AM Radio to a FM unit with a tape deck and extra speakers in the back. Retro fitted integrated air conditioning , kept that for 10 years , was a good comfortable car. Your Sigma rebuild allows me connect with the past . Cheers , looking forward to the rest of the build.

(Mis-sold bits not fitting) is our gain watching you solve and piece it all together! 😁 Really do like the way your videos are edited and the music set to them, fits so well and definitely gives your channel it's own style.
Gee...you're bringing back memories! I owned heaps of Sigmas back in the day. The last conversion I did was a factory turbo setup, Supra 5 speed, custom made clutch, lowered with customer strut adjusters, power steering and air conditioning, four wheel discs. It drove amazingly. The car was a real sleeper and looked stock.
From what I remember about owning a sigma back in the day, that looked to be a later GH/K/N 5 speed box, I believe the model of those were a KM132 which also come in a triton, there was a few different extension housings as there was options for 4wd transfer cases and longer/shorter output shafts not to mention different gear ratios for applications, and if I remember correctly ford also used this box when they utilized the Mitsubishi 4G54 2.6 in the courier for a short time Swapping from auto to manual in the later model sigma's was a bit of a nightmare due to the length of the boxes and cross member mounting bolt placement, plus you had to re cut the floor to make them fit, the wiring was easy to get around too
I really do love this episodes of the Sigma. brings back memories of when I leart to drive. Dad had a Sigma and 2 Galants (one auto, one manual) My first driving lesson Dad snapped the handbrake cable as he pulled to start my lesson in the factory sector... he must have been terrified!
I am sure you've already done so, but there is a heap of info on the Sigma Turbo forums regarding the different manual gearboxes. I had a GH Sigma Turbo, which had the "big japanese" manual gearbox fitted from factory, where as the rest of the GH lineup (and I will assume GE also) ran the shorter gearbox. If you had some issues sourcing a complete clutch kit for it, or specifically the throw out bearing, then you'll either have a GK long box, or GH Turbo box, but my money is on GK long box. If memory serves, the L200 gearbox should fit and the shifter should line up, but I am not sure which would be easier to locate these days. Definitely check out the ST forums if you haven't already, so much info there.
Looks like you have a 2.6 manual block so it has the big box on it. For a GE Sigma the trick is to use the 2.6 auto block and the smaller manual box. If my memory is working right, the early GE only had the Jap box and no 2.6 in early GE. I worked at Sigma City Wreckers but it was over 30 years ago so memory is a bit hazy.
This is what I found when I swapped a 2.0 auto GE to 2.6 5 sp, I had to use a 2.6 auto engine with a 2.0 gearbox and flywheel, it will bolt straight in, no holes to cut and the mounts line up exactly. I did this back in around 1990....
Best to check the vacuum advance in the dizzy, they are known for failing. Also the 2ltr dizzy runs more advance, as the compression ratio was higher. Earlier 2.6’s had really low compression.
I have a 2.6 and 5 speed setting at home in vic, it came out of a scorpion. It was in my L200 ute. It's a astron 2. If you get stuck with anything and want it, get onto Ben Pag, he has my number
Wish I had a dollar for every spare part i handed over the counter for these cars/engines. Z56B's, rocker cover gaskets, VRS's, fuel pumps, water pumps and the, up to 4 different, types of rear brake shoes. I'm sure the boss made good bucks from selling all that stuff for sure.
Been waiting for the sig to make a return. My mum had a brown rusty sigma and I had manual and auto starion and scorpions would be so good to get another one again. Keep up the good work benny this things going to be sick
the conversion is great what aftermarket performance parts would be using. Be nice if you could give all the added parts and gearbox a good clean. Looking forward to the next installment
Having worked on and modified sigmas, I can tell you the gearboxes are very different. We had to modify the entire tunnel on my Brother's Sigma when we changed the gearbox to 5 speed from auto
my uncle did the same conversation on a wagon same issue next the issue you will have is the tailsharft won't fit and the yoke will be different good luck boy's 👍
Mitsu did like a BIG flywheel on those 2.6s, didn't they? And isn't the bolt pattern slightly off so it only goes on one way? In the '73 (pre-balance shaft, Dizzy driven by the crank) Colt I converted to 5 speed, iirc, the mount and the opening were slightly different, but the Auto was a Dodge "Baby 904" and the Trans I used was from an 80's Challenger/Sapporo 2.6 , so maybe not a surprise. (I had two other Colts, both '76 with 1.6 later swapped to 2.6, but they were manuals from the get-go, and I can't recall what I needed for the swaps. They were done in the mid and late '80s, the '73 in the early 90's)
Did you measure the clearance between the oil pick up and the bottom of the sump? It has a dent and the cork is gone, so there is a strong possibility that the clearance is not what it used to be. For the gearbox fitment, could the motor mounts be flipped to move the engine forward?
My brother did the same auto to manual conversion and there was issues like this. Clearance issues as well. Apparently there was a few different floors and at least 3 different gearboxes depending on the year.
Sigma 5 speeds are actually longer than l200 boxes believe it or not! Love this thing can’t wait to hear it. I’m doing a similar thing. Twincam 16 valve head on a 2.0 block with twin Dcoe 45’s and a dizzy, also with Gilmore pulleys
@@opossums-will-sing I’m using a Saturn 2.0 block so the twincam turbo heads bolt on. You just need to drill two holes in the front of the block for the steam ports on the twincam head. I have about 7 twincam heads in my shed all various ports ( vr4 big port and evo small port)
Having done this exact swap many years ago on a GE Sigma, you need to use a 2.6 from an Auto, not a manual and use a 2.0 5 sp, this will allow everything to bolt straight up...
hi benny chech the engine mount plates that bolt to the engine that might be the difference between auto and manual for gearbox location if the manual in your parts car is the same length as the manual just installed then i would say the motor needs to go forward and the mount brackets are wrong but i know you will get it sorted and look forward to the next episode cheers from broken hill
@@chuggles03 Yeah, I remember a 2.6 to 2.0L head guide way back in the day from Fast Fours and you're right there. From memory they did a three angle valve job on it to fix it back up to close to the 2.6L specs.
Early Astron 1 2.0l and 2.6l is the exact same head (2.6 has dished pistons and both are solid cam). Later astron 2/magna has flat top pistons and far superior cyclinder head, lower intake studs moved for better port, and bigger valves - came stock with hydraulic cam but can swap early model solid stuff over.
