Just writing out a brief method so I don't need to keep rewinding - feel free to use if u want :)
    1. prep 2 9 inch (spring form) pans w/ parchment and greasing
    2. sift flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt
    3. add both sugars into bowl
    4. sperapte bowl: add yolks and drizzle in oil when it gets thick add vanilla keep drizzling oil till its all in. Add 2 eggs.
    5. add this custard mix to dry mix and fold together (it's chill if it's clumpy and dry)
    6. seperatly heat milk till it begins to simmer
    7. add this to the chocolaty mix wisking till its smooth-ish
    8. pop in oven in oven for 30 - 35 min / do toothpick test
    9. cool for 10 min inside pan
    10. invert onto wire rack if you want flat tops
    For frosting:
    1. sift dry ingridients together
    2. beat butter till soft then add the dry bit by bit
    3. add milk till you get right consistency (don't over do it!!)
Frost cake and decorate. Let it rest/cool then enjoy well done!! okay i'm gonna make this now bbyyyyeeee!
if you're doing this in a smaller pan (like me) reduce temp and bake for longer not sure how long tho just do the toothpick thing :)

Just made this last night at like 2am. First cake ive ever made and possibly the only cake I will ever make. It's a couple fancy techniques and that crumb and crust of the cake is just... mmmwah. I used some pretty old (not expired tho) powdered sugar and it left a very strange aftertaste, but not super noticeable. It reminds me specifically of a chocolate cake I used to eat when I was really young by a company called Bill Knapp's. I'm not sure where you get your recipes or how it is that you develop them, Josh, but you succeed so well with educating your audience on certain techniques and food science and whatnot that I am CONVINCED that this is the only chocolate cake that EVERYONE should know. It has sort of perked my ears up to the fact that the majority of people do not know anything about baking or even cooking in general, and that is why your channel is so incredibly valuable. Thank you, my friend.

So just make it in whatever pan you DO have. You could make it with a sheet pan for all anyone cares. Just be sure to adjust the baking time for any pans or dishes that would make the layer of batter thinner. Also, if it isn't non-stick maybe consider adding a layer of flour after greasing the pan? Some people swear by it, but I can't honestly tell the difference.

I did use a different chef's frosting but the cake for this came out really nice, it was dense and soft and not very crumbly. im so glad this recipe exists, i've been wanting to make a cake but have been very nervous about the process, so this was such a relief to find and a joy to make.

Madd Hatter The “mayo” mixture really isn’t that hard and Josh never said anything about steaming the milk. Just bring the milk to a simmer. You really don’t need to use a bunch of bowls. Just use one bowl and keep washing it. He puts his ingredients in separate bowls so he can add them into his batter easily. You can just go back and forth to scoop out your ingredients. Also, you can think whatever you want to about milk. But that literally has nothing to do with this being the easiest cake of all time.

ok! i tried the recipe. here’s my review:
it was pretty good!! i would definitely try it again. i consider myself an amateur baker. i’ve never made a cake from scratch before. i made this and i did it with minimal stress and difficulty. it tasted very good. it’s very rich so you won’t want to eat large pieces of the cake; a small piece is enough. my one complaint is that it created quite a big mess, but that’s pretty unavoidable while baking (especially if you’re me). overall, i do really like this recipe and i think anyone with a decent baking experience could do it.

After reading comments I decided to only use 3/4 white sugar and I’m glad I did. The cake by itself is not super sweet but very chocolate-y, and the frosting compliments that perfectly. I typed out the recipe so you don’t have to! 😄
    For cake:
    - [ ] 2 C All purpose flour (300grams)
    - [ ] 3/4 C Cocoa Powder (80grams)
    - [ ] 2 tsp baking powder (10grams)
    - [ ] 3/4 tsp baking soda (3grams)
    - [ ] 1 1/2 tsp fine sea salt (7grams)
    - [ ] 1 C granulated sugar (220grams)
    - [ ] 3/4 C brown sugar (150grams)
    - [ ] 4 eggs (2 yolks; 2 whole)
    - [ ] 1/2 C neutral oil (120ml)
    - [ ] 1 TBSP Vanilla extract (12grams)
    - [ ] 1 3/4 C whole milk (415ml)
    For frosting:
    - [ ] 4 C powdered sugar (500grams)
    - [ ] 1/2 C cocoa powder (55grams)
    - [ ] Generous pinch of sea salt
    - [ ] 1/2 C Unsalted Butter (110grams)
    - [ ] 1/4-1/2 C whole milk (59ml-118ml)
    For cake:
    1. Prep two 9” pans w/ parchment lining & grease
    2. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt
    3. Add granulated & brown sugar into bowl; mix
    4. In a separate bowl: Add 2 egg yolks and drizzle/mix in oil in increments when it gets thick add vanilla, mix until well incorporated then add 2 whole eggs
    5. Combine custard egg mix to dry mix and fold together (no problem if it’s clumpy or sticking together)
    6. In a medium sauce pan heat milk until it begins to simmer DO NOT BOIL!
    7. Add warm milk to the chocolaty mix wisking until well incorporated
    8. Fill pans & put in oven at 350°F (175°C) 30-35 minutes* or until toothpick comes out clean
    9. Let cakes cool in cake pan for 10 mins
    10. Remove cakes from pan & let rest/cool on a wire rack top side down
*if you are using smaller pans check 15-20 mins then do toothpick test to ensure not burning/drying out cake
    For frosting:
    1. Mix powdered sugar, cocoa powder, salt together
    2. In a separate bowl with a beater or stand mixer beat butter until creamy then add the dry mixture
    3. Add milk until you get a thick but spreadable consistency
    4. Frost cake. Let rest or enjoy!

This cake looks amazing bro. I am amazed by your methods of how to make it. Btw I highly recommend using cake strips if you want a flat cake. They are just pieces of fabric that you soak in water, wrap around the pans. And it gives you flat cake and prevents the edges from drying out and forming a crust

  • @FlawedFabrications

Here's my great grandma's cake recipe that's not only ridiculously easy to make but is always the first cake to get eaten whenever we take it to one of those coffee morning things.
    - Take 8oz/225g/1 US cup/226ml/0.000226796 metric tons of butter, caster sugar and flour and put it in a big bowl with four medium sized eggs. Vanilla extract optional.
    - Whisk it all together in the same bowl with like a tablespoon or something of baking powder (I never measure baking powder). No need to get fancy or do anything separately. It should be a pretty thick mixture.
    - Add mixture evenly to two cake tins and bake for 20-25 minutes at 180c/356f or until done.
    - For buttercream frosting, get another 8oz of powdered/icing sugar (the really fine stuff that gets everywhere if you so much as breathe on it) and 4oz of butter, and (gently, unless you like a kitchen covered in powdered sugar) whisk it together until it comes together as a homogenous buttercream. Strawberry jam highly recommended as a layer in the middle of the cake, along with the buttercream.
    - Slap buttercream in middle (layered on the jam if you use it) and on top
    - Enjoy.
My great grandma called it the 8 and 4 recipe because the amount in ounces of the primary ingredients going in the cake should be 8, except the number of medium eggs, which should be 4. This is scalable as well, for instance if you wanted 10oz of the other ingredients, add 5 eggs instead. Similar with the buttercream.
OPTIONALLY: if you want to make it a chocolate cake, then just remove a bit of flour and make it up with cocoa powder instead (I find 5oz flour with 3oz cocoa powder work great). Do the same with the buttercream - just replace some of the icing sugar with cocoa (5oz icing sugar, 3oz of cocoa powder again works really well). The trick with buttercream, at least with the icing sugar we get here in the UK, is no matter how much you make, you want your total amount of icing sugar to be double the amount of butter. again, this is all scaleable, so just adjust to make however much you want.

As far as a chocolate cake goes? This is quite easy. You do have to do certain steps to make a chocolate cake good, like how he heated the whole milk and added it to the batter. This allows the proteins to break down and give it a really amazing depth of taste. I would not recommend doing without this step as it would just take like a cake made from a box. He basically just went with the bare minimum to make a tasty cake tbh xD

I have made this cake and here’s my review: it is really nice and moist it is perfect in flavour. The icing is very strong so having it with whipped cream makes that not to powerful there was only a small mess and I would definitely cook it again. One last thing is that it took me 3 hours to make but I am a bad baker but it was pretty good I recommend it.
