- Every airline has their own branding on their planes, but for the most part, they're all painted white.
Why? The light color reflects sunlight and solar radiation while the plane is in flight and keeps the cabin cool. "It's basically like putting sunblock on," MIT Aeronautics and Astronautics professor R. John Hansman told Business Insider.

If you ever live in a car/van you will learn white is the best color because it reflects the sun and keeps the interior very cool compared to dark colors. Also when you use a reflective windshield protector the inside actually stays quite cool. It is still hard to live in the summer though. Winter, believe it or not, is a lot easier because it is easy to heat up a space whereas cooling it is much harder.

I'm not so sure about the need to fend off sun heat since temperatures at flight level altitudes outside the aircraft is -56°C.
Sun exposure in the ground ... sure.
A more plausible reason to make the aircraft skin more visible is to make it easier for the crash rescue operations to find it.

At first I thought of it like this: White reflects most colors back so this makes it very, very visible so other pilots will be able to spot and make way for it.
Black planes do exist though. Donald Trump's 757 is painted half black, and Air New Zealand's and Avion Express' liveries are entirely black.
The Stig's German Cousin Air New Zealand is White. ONLY for SPECIAL occasions will an a/c be painted black.
Air New Zealand had all-black liveries, I don't know if they're still in service. And as said, there are some other black planes around.
2 liverys, the first is predominantly white with a black strip running downwards on the rear fuselage from the tail, adorned with a koru logo in white, to disappear downwards just before where the wings meet the body of the plane. The black and white fern mark adorns the fuselage. This livery is used on most of the fleet. A select number have an all black livery with the fern in silver, including the airline's first Boeing 787-9. The first aircraft to be painted in this livery was rolled out on 24 September 2013.

When visiting the Boeing facility in Seattle we were told that planes were primarily white because pigments in paint is added weight. Paint starts out as white, thus adding colour adds weight. And modern planes is all about weight saving.
Can anybody answer why there is not a more standardized design of airport terminals? If you look in the back of those airport magazines on the plane it will show the different designs of the airports in each city across the world and it seems not one are similar.

The plane's supposed to get you where you want to go, and really I'm sure the average traveler wouldn't mind saving quite a bit of money on a trip even if it means the plane is white. If it's your private jet, then sure, do whatever you like with it.

Knew this before watching it. Basic physics. Also fighting jets are dark because they are used for military operations so they have to camouflage from enemy planes above them and also for night operations. Not sure if this also helps fighting jets not being detected by radars. Or the material that is used to be off the radar is dark.

Back in the 60s, Playboy's Hugh Hefner bought a Douglas 10 and had it painted black. The company went crazy trying to figure out how to cool off the plane enough so it could fly.

Up above, the temperature is way below zero degrees Celsius. Heat transfer by sun is not significant. We do not freeze inside the plane while cruising high altitude. That means planes are well insulated thermally.
One thing about keeping it cool sounds a bit inconsistent. I thought getting above 15,000 feet is freezing temperatures. Aircraft's are running a Heating System to keep it warmer at High Altitudes. Being on the Ground makes sense though.

naked bare shinny metal has other advantage because actually the paint itself, unknown by most people, has weight. it quite saves on fuel. but it does tarnish though because bare aluminium will oxide, and has less protection from environment like salt/acid, don't even think about mercury.
but how about paint it with transparent paint or lacquer? it can retain its shiny, will it then make it unsafe to other pilot because of possible sun glare from reflecting surface?
It's -50 C at cruising altitute so extra heat from sun could actually save energy...

2. less layering of paint, coz white is the base paint of any colour
3. American Airlines paint with current livery, not their typical shining one, coz they ordered Airbus fleet and Airbus fleet not as Boeing's metal colour, so they started a new livery.
4. Typically, the Euro-white livery airline will have a darker colour at bottom, to minimize affect.

You forgot to mention that it is easier to spot a downed aircraft from the air if its white . Especially if it has come down in bush. Not so great if its hiding in snow.
Also white easier to spot air to air and ground to air.
