Why Most Aircraft Are Painted White

- While each airline has a distinct livery, the vast majority of the plane is almost always white. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule. A notable one is Air New Zealand, which painted its aircraft black as part of a $13.3 million marketing partnership with Tourism New Zealand.
Dutch carrier KLM and the now defunct WOW Air are some other exceptions.
But why are most aircraft painted white?

My only real complaint about all these white designs is the dirty square mark the jet bridges leave around the boarding doors.
imo that looks so good, i like a more worn look
They should paint a dark border around that area....problem solved.
@@shrimpflea Not always. Cant be wiped clean.
particurly the asian carriers like SIA
@@justaviation8876 Whats Asian about this ?? Huh ??
White win. But the Air New Zealand all black is entirely gorgeous
I had never asked this question before, but genuinely surprised with how entertaining this niche information can be
Thanks for the feedback! - TB
Another random topic I didn't think about but simple flying answered well, thanks!
I know already know about 80% of things they make videos about but I still like to watch it.
you all forgot to mention #Braniff - the maverick US airline which stood out from the crowd and was all about flying colours, especially Orange.
How bold it was, not to mention the incredible outrageous puccini outfits the cabin crew wore.
How times have changed...
I never knew Braniff was an airline, I thought they just made tv show lol
I’d love a video on American’s old polished aluminum livery.
Yes, that would be a great topic. I read somewhere American saved thousands of gallons of fuel each year with polished aluminum airliners.
When Virgin operated out of Brussels about 20 years ago, all of their aircraft were painted red completely (well, the fuselage that is).
In Australia we used to have Virgin Blue which was red. My favourite livery of all time probably, but then they went boring and changed to Virgin Australia and changed the fleet to white.
That Pepsi Concorde looks like such a meme
real life korean airlines
The second I read your comment the pepsi Concorde came on screen.
@@neilmu3494 same
Probably also helps when de-icing, those brightly coloured dyes to indicate coverage will show up better on a white background, reducing the risk of missed spots, which is a major safety concern.
Even royal Jordanian airways has a black livery
I remember there were many visibility complaints when United went to its “Battleship Gray” livery in the 1990s. Plus it was a nightmare to maintain.
This is really interesting. You guys are more informative than a plane Wikipedia. People who are interested in aviation should really watch this. And btw I never thought how powerful is the colour white!👍
First-time im early! Love this channel!
So I’m watching this and simple flying posts an article
Other examples: TUI, Spirit, the flying carrot (EasyJet), jet star, southwest, Vietnam airways, wow, wizz, KLM, air New Zealand, Norwegian. Those are the main ones I can think of hopefully that helped if you wanted to know
A lot of those you mentioned are still painted white, they just have logos and decals painted in different colours on top of the white paint
0:23 Cmon More please, aw man only thoose?
*Scoot and airasia walks in*
Crowd Cheers
Pretty sure they both use white as a base colour, it's just they paint decals on top
To a money conscious airline, white is the cheapest colour you can get.
I learned a lot of new info from this video...Well Done. Thanks

I reduces the heat gain on the ground. I've been stuck in Phoenix for four hours while they tried to cool down a plane with a cooling truck, and when that didn't work, they brought out a fresh plane from the hangar. It also reduces expansion of the fuselage shell, which can cause hairline cracks at rivet and other joining lines.
Or to put it another way,it takes a gallon of fuel to lift a gallon of paint. That's why Braniff and Court Line went bust whilst at the same time American airlines didn't.
I love Simple flying for your quality service keep up
Thanks for the feedback! - TB
Thats why AA used to have an all alu finish for decades to reduce weight. BCal also had white and under side in alu on their entire Dc-10 fleet.
I want more videos about the liveries and some more aircraft order news!
We can see about liveries, but order news might be a bit harder given that not many are happening right now. :) - TB
Painting a plane cost: $50-200k
UK government: *Hold my beer*
Can you please make detailed video of airbus a320 family as you did for the boeing 737 Family
Easier to find if one lands in the ocean
Its a very nice video I love your channel 1 million likes by last year
Unless the plane goes down in snow. Then, things get a wee bit more difficult. Needle in a haystack comes to mind.
Why most planes are painted white?
Most RUclips channels (BRIGHT SIDE, Tech Insider): because it keeps the plane cooler

@simple flying Can you make a video about why do older planes have black paint next to the cockpit window(like the 747-100) and why manufacturers don't do that anymore?
Thanks for the feedback! - TB
@Simple Flying what are your thoughts on boom super sonic and the new Xb-1
We covered the rollout over on our website SimpleFlying.com - TB
American Airlines had the best with the mirror effect fuselage
0:20 Southwest Airlines too
Very informative.. so 50k- 200k to paint, what about the cost of changing or refreshing the cabin? How much would that typically cost and how long would it typically take and where and how often do most airlines have it done?
They say here that the weight of the paint adds to the fuel consumption but try flying without it. Fuel consumption would be way worse so, painting actually saves fuel consumption.
Does brushed aluminum weigh less than white paint?
The 747 Corendon plane in your story is use as a hotel. Corendon never flown with a 747. Corendon used an old KLM 747. So the Corendon 747 might have other white paint as it wil never fly.
does the same apply to cars?
Plz make a video about success of low cost carrier

Even if you ain't an aviation nerd I'm sure you knew this!
Did I know that you publish more than 175 articles every week on SimpleFlying.com?
Yes, you tell us that every single video -_-
Sure, but somebody who came across a Simple Flying video for the first time mat not know that. - TB

Maybe at least try saying it every other video so that it wouldn’t be this repetitive?

Southwest Airlines really being forgotten at the start
Would like to see other alternatives to painting such as wrapping !
I think some temporary and special liveries use wraps. I suspect they aren't as durable, are probably heavier and might even be more expensive.
@@Croz89 I wish they would've talked about it !
simpleflying.com/boeing-dreams-take-flight/ This 787-9 had a full body decal so that Boeing could test out how it affected the composite fuselage. - TB
honestly I like the white with some plane liveries
Actually I know the reason but I got to know the reason in detail ..Nice video❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the feedback! - TB
I beleive to make it quicker too
Nice video

*royal Jordanian has entered the chat*
Cause paints made crafts heavy and cost more fuel
Heck even a good many of your general aviation airplanes are white too.
Air New Zealand: Am I a joke to you?
Cost of white paint is cheaper than a colour
What about Wow Air, Spirit, and Air New Zealand? Lol.
Did you watch the video? He mentioned Wow Air and Air New Zealand in the exceptions
1:35 the only real reason imo
They paint it white for it to be more fuel efficient and cost effective
why do the weight in pounds no one knows how much weight that is except for like 3 countries, ridiculous
Thanks for the feedback! - TB
Air New Zealand's new livery: *Am i a joke to you?*
Philippine Airlines Eurowhite Livery is waving
Seeing how all airlines switch to a boring all-white livery with just a coloured tail is quite disappointing.
Liveries used to be original and colourful, you could identify a plane from far away. Now it's all white planes everywhere.
its like why trains are mostly white
Airlines : Paint their aircraft white to make themselves more visible to birds to avoid bird strikes.
US AIRWAYS FLIGHT 1549 : Hold my damaged twin jet engines.
Leave a like if you found it funny 😂😂😂
Ups is half brown
Even Saudi Airlines are not really white, there about 65% only and even Qatar Airways too 😊
Greetings from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦
1:25 LOL i don’t understand what’s inside the head of Air China’s CEO when it keeps using a livery from the last century 🤣🤣🤣 It’s such an optical torture.
Hello Philippine Airlines!
I love how ppl tap on the vid straight a way
Air New Zealand ?
cool
11 dislikes from Southwest Airlines c-suite boys, who hate to be omitted.
most kitchen appliances are painted white

Nihal Dhillon haha nice one😂😂😂
Shout out to all the proud POC (that's planes of colour).
Brussels airlines has a black a320 with Tintin themed livery
Because it's a beautiful and happy colour ? Or so it's not too hot in summer ? Idk, haven't watched the video yet
i see you dont include PIA PAKISTAN INTL AIRLINES in any of your videos , that could have been useful in your this video as it is also 90%white and secondly i had a bright past and was favourite of many celebrities including kennedy . also it helped Emirates in the start
REALLY DISAPPOINTED
Hello Mustafa, we don't intentionally avoid PIA. However, with the majority of airline liveries being white, you could make the same argument about many other airlines that also may have never been in a Simple Flying video. - TB
I knew it all !!! Vietnam Airlines is ALL GREEN. Saudia also was green on their L1011s. Save for American, havent seen a silver plane. Why ??
American Airlines and Eastern Airlines used to have silver bare metal planes. The problem was they were easily corroded with no paint to protect them.
@@shrimpflea Sorry !! Cant agree with you. Cant be bare metal. Must have got metallic silver like my car. No paint. No brain.
@@indranilchakrabarty4196 Look it up smart guy. They did not use paint.
@@shrimpflea Oh Yeah !!!
