This is the classic death of a thousand cuts. Sooo many little things like switches not working that it becomes a write-off. I had a nice S-Type R, 120,000 miles, but unlike the Bentley it only cost £3500, kept it for 3 years, bought only 1 tyre for it, sold it as scrap with a broken gearbox in 1 day on ebay for £1000. All good!

As a Mechanical Engineer, the idea that a car needs a computer module to open the trunk is maddening... a simple solenoid (or god forbid a cable and spring loaded latch) is all it needs.. and yeah i know, it has an auto-close function... for those people who find closing a trunk to be too much work... sheesh... makes me shake my head...
Even with electronics, it can be made simpler.
I'm a mechanical electrical engineer and I agreed with you Brett.
Cable and spring to open the mechanical latch,simple and must be cheaper than filling a car with electronics.
I restore Japanese sports cars and I don't even consider anything after about 2005.

what amazes me is that a car of that class still uses the cheapest electronic components available and they inevitably fail after a decade or so. other car manufacturers use QUALITY electronic that still works after 30 years.
Yea I am also suprised why modern cars are so complicated. For example I do not understand electric windows and electric seats.
I have car with mechanicaly set windows and seats and I do not find it complicated or not comfortable to set.
(how often do you set the seats in the car or pull down the window anyway....)
If you make it electrical, you create 10 more ways how it can break and the repair is also X times more costly...
Sam......I have dealt with a few of these at work... GET THE TOP WORKING FIRST. if it thinks the top isn't fully closed, the windows won't work, the trunk will not open, etc. Check the hydraulic fluid to see if it's low. If not, there's a switch on the left side of the top ...barely accessable in the trunk and that switch has a tendency to fail. I've fixed two of them. One I had to extend one of the plastic arms slightly, the other I had to add a spring to make the switch fully close as the microswitch was a little stiff. Rosstexh vcds will access some of these systems but without being a Bentley engineer it's kind of hard to do specific testing. That front bumper is stupid money to replace btw. Good luck homie. These cars are terrible to work on.
One bonus....you didn't have to use a jump box... On these if the main battery is dead on the left side of the trunk, insert the ignition key in and turn is counterclockwise for a few seconds...this will activate the auxillary battery in the right side of the trunk and allow you to start the car.

You're right - you can also see the RED roof warning. My roof has flaps that open and close with the roof - I found that a nut was missing off the end of one of the flap actuators push rods where it mates to the flap. I fitted a new nut and that solved the sensor issue. I also cleaned the grease off the tracks of the actuators (common issue). Before the roof opens or closes it drops the windows half-way - this is probably why you have the window issue if it thinks the top is in "no-mans land". I also advise against the repair kits unless on a really tight budget - based on experience, I would opt for the full mechanism (also be aware that there are adjusters that you can fine tune the position of the glass height).

I had a similar problem on the gas fill. There's a drain tube to prevent that pooling. It was clogged from grass and leaves. After I cleaned out, I put a large piece of Scotchbrite over it to filter the drain. Works perfectly.
My filler cap on my golf7…the drain hole got blocked and it filled with water..
@@griswald7156 Same thing, precise German engineering. So easy to fix with Scotchbright, but I've never had a car before that had that whole area closed off that way.
That as always a problem on the Jaguar XJ range. Once water in the fuel tank reached the pumps, you had endless problems.
As I remember, the boat oar was a $1500 option on these cars.

The aged barrel oak Oar was a $1500 option. The Honduran Mahogany with hand burnished finish was $3500 and was the best seller. The oars always sold as the buyers did not want to be left up the river without one.

I have a feeling the reason the windows are in that position has to do with the top, this is also most likely why the trunk wasn’t opening. It most likely thinks the top isn’t closed/latched completely since it’s showing red on the dash..

all Modern VAG product only last 200.000 KM after it, the maintenance cost you more than the same car NEW .. i dit 20.000 miles and it cost me 5000.- maintence. I never ever will buy a Vag product again..

These cars aren’t meant to be purchased new or used. Rich people lease them under business name and get full tax write off. They only keep it for 3 years and that is pretty much how long these cars last before having issues.
There should be a small drain channel once you open the fuel flap, just give it a clean as it appears to be blocked 👍🏻👊🏿
It is always interesting to see how and why cars such as this Bentley collapse in resale value after a very few years. The principal reason is that their elite original target purchasers will soon dispose of these vehicles once they become unreliable and prove to be problematic to maintain. Rich people generally attain that title by not accepting second best. Once these vehicles are offered for sale outside their original niche market, there is no 'second line' of semi-wealthy buyers who are eager to take over the depreciation liabilities and horrendous maintenance and running costs, so the cars quickly fall into the hands of those who neglect them and treat them as 'average' vehicles instead of the highly complex 'trophy' creations which they are, so the downward spiral rapidly develops. This generation of Bentley is rarely seen on the wealthier streets of London any longer, and the marque has undoubtedly suffered greatly from the poor reputation that continues to tarnish the Brand even today.
If you make a quality car there are wealthy buys who will buy some cars over original msrp as well as its a pristine example

I spent a short time in my life trying to find a way to maintain a solid lifter Porsche cheaply. I discovered I couldn't do it, the car was a money pit and it was the slowest car I ever had because the cops would pull me over for 5mph over the limit in that car.

I feel ya Sam. I am going through something similar with an auction bought BMW convertible. It looked great on the outside, low mileage, history etc, but was actually hiding a lot of mechanical/electrical issues that I am slowly working through. I have bought a lot of cars at auction and consider myself a savvy buyer, but this time I got done hard. Live and learn.
I've had that issue before with a car, got it from auction and wow I thought i got it for a steal but all the parts i had to put in it, i could've bought another auction car LMAO

That opening trunk issue is common to some VAG models. In my case the problem was an small switch in the opening button. The problem is that is almost impossible to replace without breaking the latch. In my passat in was also integrated in the trunk logo.
Love the fact that stepmom made an appearance. You should keep the Bentley and let stepmom work on it. I would care if she couldn't fix it. In fact, the longer she can't fix it the better!

Hi Sam, just to let you know it will work out cheaper to get the wing from the main dealer rather than eBay. There is a RUclipsr in the UK called Matt Armstrong who repaired a salvage continental and think he saved around £1000 around $1400 by doing this!

The car was probably put in valet mode. The trunk won’t open with the fob or proximity sensor until it is deactivated in the radio head unit.

No, it does not have a valet mode such as the press of a button in the glovebox, or in the Infotainment head unit (radio) as stated above, the valet is the keys themselves, a 2 button fob is the valet, and the 3 button fobs are full access.

Ok for those who do not know this, the Bentley Continental GT GTC and flying spur have a master key and a slave key. The master key has the trunk release option on the key. All slaves do not. If you unlock the doors with a slave key the trunk release will not work from the boot (trunk) B or the internal door release. The trunk is designed only to open with the doors unlocked by the master. This is a security feature of the cars. So make sure you are using a key that is and is programmed as a master key or nothing is going to change no matter what you do

That was what I was thinking, just looking at my keys. Only the main key has the boot open option. It's to stop the hotel bell boy robbing ya stuff! But his roof not being shut won't help or his shit battery.
Maybe there’s a fail safe which stops the boot opening if it detects the roof not fully up or down ?

I agree on the cost, but by going through the fixes and totaling up the cost for everyone (running and at the end), along with the wok involved with those fixes, you show everyone what an upside down proposition these vehicles can be without knowledge. Now this may deter people, but it also helps to inform those that are staring at their dream car for a "good" price and if they want to take it on and repair them. Bentley's are truly beautiful cars and some probably deserve to be saved, but your efforts will help educate, and either dissuade or entice others to take on a project car like this (or at least bid/pay appropriately). For what it's worth, just the take of a dreamer and car enthusiast.
I went to Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale in 2019, and there were a TON of these for sale. I thought maybe rich people were just replacing their daily drivers but now I suspect that they were dumping them with all these issues

The lack of longevity / durability generating faults can be sickening. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, one needs to be mentally resilient and stoic. Thought, patience and time reveal that which at first eludes.

Your trunk problem is because of the top. The trunk opening is disabled when the car thinks the top is not closed. You need to short or fix the micro switch (located left side of top accessible from the truck)for the top closed and then your trunk will work. Micro switch probably failed or is out of alignment. Should be a easy fix.
Our Audi a5 convertible trunk wouldn't open due to a malfunction in the microswitches of the convertible top and we had to use the key to open it. Once I replaced the convertible hall sensor and adjusted the microswitch, the convertible top worked with no issues, the trunk open with the remote fob and the trunk button, alarm worked, rear passenger overhead lights worked.
I was thrilled to have no lights on the dash and a working top for $70 plus my labor.

I feel for you, I had a phaton that gave me numerous electrical problems.
It had 2 batteries one for start the other for computers (gel matt)
Funny I took the center arm rest out to get trunk open with a putter and the emergency release handle (glows in the dark)
The biggest issue I've had on several cars that wasn't easily noticeable has constantly been electrical. The biggest problem there has been COLD CONNECTIONS. Most or at least many people tend to try to replace or ignore these parts. For some reason assembly of these items is done at a modicum of soldering and heat, so they fail or at least eventually fail. Take apart most of your parts clean them at a minimum use a heat gun at a maximum go through them under a scope and solder any primary systems. More than likely your car will run better than any other on the road. This may seem daunting but, is really quite easy.
After that intro I cancelled my appointment to test drive one. I also stopped the video at the earbud advert at 2:51. Cheers for your time and help.
I would expect about two electrical issues like that per year, any auction car is going to have a few years worth of issues stacked up.
Never buy any modern car from anyone without scanning the car first. There will be issues that are not even issues yet.
Even visually, that car spells roached. The top, the bumpers- easy $10 right there. Obviously it was bought to make this video, overpriced a bit.
He said he paid 10k under market. a sorted model is about 60k.
And make sure that codes haven't been cleared recently
Get a scan tool. A nice one. You can activate the modules from the tool and verify if you are even getting a signal. You cant just swap parts without verifying a control signal lol.

Once you sort the convertible top, a multitude of electronics will start working is my educated guess as the car disabled features when the convertible top is in a malfunctioned state, as was our A5.

Have seen that one of the VW "incentives " to ensure 7 to 10 year old cars are sent to the junkyards is to use poor quality electric components. They have used low quality solder on their circuit boards and it corrodes and the result is gremlins. The ABS systems glitch and they have made them incredibly hard to replace with model coding programming making swapping used units impossible. Some smart electrical engineers can disassemble and resolver the components and fix the boards. One of engineers simply stated the boobie trapped these products to ensure they become difficult or uneconomical to repair intentionally.

I’ve seen several auction cars that appear to only be front end damage, air bags deployed. These buyers thought it was a straight forward repair only to find seized engines!! Essentially lost their shorts!!

On the other hand, I've got a 2010 VW Phaeton and (touch wood), it's been very reliable electricals-wise (apart from trunk lid wiring issue and the parking heater stopped working due to water ingress). Looks like this Bentley has just been run into the ground.
Please always make sure to check and clean your water cowl so your interior won't flood, it can drown the keyless module causing all sorts of problems

I bought this same car new in 2010 and it was the best car I ever owned, I only traded it 10 years later in 2020. The one bad thing of a car this age is that all the engine and turbo seals will start leaking and you literally need to drop the engine out of the car to do that work, so $6k plus to drop engine before price of repair, was only reason I got rid of mine.

My 2014 M6 had me also. The auction listing showed damage to the front end. It stated that it ran. Once I got it, only one side ran (V8 engine). Turns out, the oil cooler sits in the bottom front without any protection. Seized one head on the engine. So, I decided to replace the entire head. $1k, which is a good price for an expensive performance car. It's been driving ever since. Anyway, don't buy from Salvageworld... Ever!

I’ve personally dealt with every single one of those problems. A lot of the electrical issues are caused by the water coming into the cabin behind the dash and under the seat. Water comes in through the windshield whipper pans and the drains are plugged from debris. It’s the most common issue on 2004-2008 Bentley GT and GTC.
Owning a car like this (age and complexity) is an adventure of continuous DIY maintenance if you like that as a hobby. Otherwise, even using a decent independent mechanic will likely exceed the lease cost of a new luxury vehicle. Even just sitting there the plastic degrades and the cheap electronics corrode. Throw in the frustration factor and it's easy to see why the only true value is to scam poor posers in search of bling.
And rarity translates into parts extremely expensive or not available at all.
The odd thing is that the guy doesn't seen to understand it might be as simple as the exterior trunk button being broken.

A friend of mine fixes these Bentley Bumpers all the time, He uses CA Glue, Epoxy and Window screen as a backer to glue these back together to a point that he can perform bodywork and repaints them.

It may have water leaking into the car from somewhere. I have a 2004 BMW 750 that had clogged sunroof drains. Water ended up in the foot well on the driver’s side and shorted out power seat module. That module controlled a bunch of things in the car, and caused random electrical gremlins. Since this is a soft top there may be a drain port that is plugged causing water to come in and shorting out things.
May sound crazy, and I am only at 8.38, have an Audi A6 Avant Quattro from that age, had issues with the motorized boot door. Turned out to be that the latch in the floor section needed a really good hoover out and clean and re-lube and replacement of the very small spring. That was 3 years ago and it has not done it since. Reckon it was the dog hair causing the issue.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaa! You bought a wrecked pile of shit at an auction, and it had other issues. That's not a "Scam". That's "predictable". There are companies who specialize in post collision electronics failures. One of my neighbors owns one, they work with body shops and dealers to sort out all of the little electrical gremlins that pop up after a collision. It isn't uncommon for these sorts of issues on any car that's been wrecked.

Vehicles like this are typically leased. There's no reason whatsoever for a short term leaser who doesn't intend to keep the vehicle beyond the lease term to look after it.

Several years ago i worked for an auto broker and we ordered a new vr6 jetta for a customer. He had ordered an aftermarket spoiler for it. When we installed the spoiler the 3rd brakelight was spliced to the spoiler . From that point the car went totally bonkers. Trunk wouldnt stay shut. Sunroof wouldnt close, doors wouldnt lock etc , etc. Never will i own a modern vw/audi product.
Remove the latch mechanism. Put a screen door latch and loop set up on the trunk lid and fascia, with some self tapping screws.
Use a Master lock with its own keys, and all will be good. Use stainless steel screws and a really nice brass coloured lock, to maintain the upscale image of the car.

Volkswagen bro, that’s the answer. Those Bentleys are among the worst cars you can buy used, especially the first versions until 2010, they’re built like shit.
Everybody acts like those cars are insane but in reality they don’t have anything special apart from a huge amount of problems, way more than an Aston Martin rapide or quattroporte gts for exemple
Sadly they care only about the initial owner and bank on them not caring about warranty repairs. Much like the Titanic they were concerned more with form(appearance) than function. Which in the boat's case allowed improperly mixed metal used both in rivets and on the hull up towards the bow. That is bad even for the day none the less modern standards. No-one bothered to analyze the new softer mix allowing rivets to be done by hand where the large machine riveter could not fit would be up to the task. Allowing the side to split open and tear beyond the impact point and contrary to expectation based on the original spec. Luxury vehicle mfg's are the same concern on looking fancy without care for what is underneath holding up or operating all that fancy. Nor concern for what could happen if something fails while driving. Not only should luxury look higher quality it should be higher quality. It is crazy that a hyundai elantra would be expected to go at least 100,000 mi before serious repair. While a $250,000+ bentley or ferrari anything over 30,000 mi is doing good.
@@cardinaloflannagancr8929 that’s 100 percent right, and it’s for me the biggest problem of Volkswagen, they found ways to reduce costs even going for non homologated vacuum lines and non repair ability, they do this with every car they sell, sometimes it works and they make huge markups, and sometimes they bring back 2 or 3 million cars and they loose billions.

I'm interested in what would happen if we found a way to make a "kit car" out of an LS 430 and a Bentley. Let's put a number of $60K on a Bentley with Toyota reliability. The motor on the LS 430 is so reliable it was classified as an aviation motor. An AVIATION motor!!!!!
they have failing electrics today as well as basic maintenance on those v8s, have you seen where the starter motor is ?
@@simonainscough619 I've got two LS one is a 430 and aside from the Florida sun completely destroying the dashboard and the finish on the steering wheel, it's given over 160K worth of trouble-free miles. The drivetrain is as close to bulletproof as I've ever seen. Cost of maintenance isn't the cheapest, but I'll bet its a fraction of maintaining a Bentley for 16 years. Even with the failing electronics. Which you are right, is going to eventually be a problem.

My 54 Nash has an interesting piece of technology for opening the trunk. I stick a key in the hole and turn it. Still works after 68 years.

This one sounds like a theft recovery to me. Also given the water in the fuel filler area, look for water ingress around the control modules.
how do you think it got water ingress? top down in rain? i am wondering how water got into the fuel fill area. possibly the fuel fill door was left open in rain? or?

I had less troubles with a flood bentley then you did with this one lmao 🤣 mine had the alarm going off randomly and a smell of burned plastic (was a wire sparkling ✨️) and the seats not functioning. Most of it I fixed with new wires and fuses just replaced 1 module since then no issues. 🤞

As a Bentley owner, I can attest to the fact that the issues you have and never mechanical/drive train related. it's always electrical. I've had a number of problems that have taken specialists hours and hours to chase down. When it's sorted, it is one of the bes cars to drive. I love mine and I would have another in a heart beat - but now I know what I'd be on the look of for before parting with any case.

Volkswagen, Audi , Bentley use the same kind of modules. The same module can control lights doors and trunk at the same time. When they failed, you have that kind of electronic defects. You can change all the locks, headlights. What you have to change is the module. Before VW group used just the ECU to control everything but now they have ECU and those small modules and that's the problem. Small modules that need to be replaced

I owned a 2008 Audi A6 for two years. I imagine a lot of the same electronics were shared. From an electrical point of view, I'd say it was the worst ever and that includes British Leyland. I had a chance to buy a VW Phaeton at the same time and I'm sooooo glad I passed. Either way I bought garbage.
I bought that same gen a6 at a copart auction and man that thing was a nightmare. Ended up dumping it and taking a loss.
Had a friend with the same car from brand new. It ended up with a Lemon law from the fiber optics being undiagnosable
@@sgfreak96 so many engineering screw ups. The fact they put the timing on the back of the engine even knowing the chain guides fail. You have to remove the whole engine to redo the timing chains. The intake is an active intake with servos in the plenums. You can't access them without replacing them. 7K at the dealer. I checked and found out I could throw in a used S6 engine for the same price as just the intake. Tailights with chips in them that burn out. It was 1500 to fix the taillights just because of those chips. You can't put in aftermarket because they won't "talk" to the computer. And on, and on, and on....
@@DerekMantei the stereo wouldn't work. It had that older MMI system. Turns out the dealer had tested it and knew the satellite module was out and the previous owner said no thanks. The MMI system has 8 linked modules including the stereo. If any of them fail you have to fix that one before any of them work. It would have been 3K to repair it and no guarantees on the other 7 modules.

I’ve always thought that it would be easier on some cars to gut all the computers and rewire the car with a universal wiring harness. You might loose some features, but reliability and usability increase by a big margin.

The more videos I see about buying old overpriced luxury cars, the happier I am to drive a Toyota. There are much better things to spend money on, than trying to look like you have money when you don't. I'll take a used Toyota Avalon over any of these poorly made junk luxury cars any day.
