  • Code 11 is one of the biggest codes that could happen to a Rinnai unit.
    The code is no ignition and can include a gas problem, vent problem and a ground problem.
    Some times it can be solved by just cleaning the fan or the ignitor or flame rods but most of the time you will have to remove the burner to clean it.
    If you have a question or would like a Rinnai Guy sticker please e mail me you info to economyplmbg@aol.com
    I hope you enjoy this video,
    Mike

    Read through the comments on any of Mike's videos and you'll see the lengths he goes to share his knowledge and help his subscribers troubleshoot issues they're facing. Tonight was my turn.
    Mike spent an hour or so in email, on the phone, and through text helping me pinpoint a strange noise issue I was having with a recently installed Rinnai RU199in.
    Simply amazing and his time is so very appreciated.

So I ordered new board with chip to upgrade program worked great then this morning got the code 11, burner lights but goes out then tries a second time and code 11’s. Mike you are freaking Awesome! I watched your heat exchange replacement video and replaced mine. I got a code 11 and one burner was not coming on. I ordered a new gas block thinking the solenoid was water damaged. Still throwing a code 11 after the switch out. So i find this video, and then at 07:20 the ground wire. Wait I don't remember a ground wire on the gas manifold. So i go back in the box digging around. I have a RL94i, it is a short wire that connects to the chassis from the control box. I never saw it when i put the thing back together. Soon as i connected it and tested, dam thing fired up like a champ. DO NOT FORGET YOUR GROUND PEOPLE! Save yourself the $85 for a new burner. Thanks again Mike!

    Mike, good video! I’ve experienced error code 10 several times now and made my own videos on how to fix it. This is the first time I’ve had error code 11 and I followed your video and this was indeed my problem. I’ve never cleaned out the burner or the igniter section since I put my unit in back in 2016. It was a dirty job and I probably should’ve had a mask on when I blew it out. The burner was clogged with white, burnt residue, and the orifices were clogged. Took it apart and cleaned it all out with my wire brushes, air hose, and vacuum cleaner, and it works like a champ now. I was careful not to break the gaskets and did not replace them. Hopefully that was not a bad thing and I did not smell gas after I turned it back on. Thanks for getting my RL94i back up and running.

    Nice video, I’m having that code right now. My unit is only a couple weeks old. So I’m assuming it probably warranty, so I’m not going inside of it. But I’m always curious as to how things work. Being “ignition” I was thinking electrical, but sounds like more of a combustion not sensed code, probably watching for heat at a thermocoupler or something. Seeing that it air flow could be an issue I hope it’s not critters blocking the breathing, my unit is outside.
    Again thanks for the detailed video!

    Mike love your videos. Since I'm not a plumber, I learned through experience that code 11 means the unit is not getting gas. Most common reason here in California is that someone hit the gas meter and triggered the earthquake valve shutting the gas off from the gas line feeding the unit.

    As for Code 11. If you've had the gas line open, let's say to work on the gas pipe and the thing isn't lighting off, one thing I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is the simplest thing of all. Plug and unplug the 120v cord to reboot the thing. That happened to me today, and all the great complex instructions will be great for another time, but I had to discover the simple thing first so I'm passing it on.

The unit will fire when the screw is removed from the port where the water column gauge is connected, but will not fire with the screw in. Is it ok to allow the unit to operate with the screw out? If not, what could be the problem and what should we do? We have checked everything: valves open, gas in the tank, proper wc pressure, and so on. Mike, thanks for all your outstanding videos. I have the RUR98i with error codes 14 and 11 that runs on propane. I've checked the basics (fuel in tank, no obstructions on outside air intake and exhaust and looked for obvious issues). I flushed the unit thoroughly with vinegar. This seemed to help the unit function for about 3 weeks, but then it started acting up again. What happens during use is that water gets very hot initially for about 5-8 minutes. The water temp then falls off, but if you turn the hot water on-and-off numerous times while taking a shower it will come back on hot and stay hot indefinitely??? Do you have any recommendations for me? I'm not a pro, just a homeowner looking to make a fix. Thanks again!

    Great videos!!! I am getting a code 11 only after bad rain storm. My unit is on the exterior of my home. It has happened twice now. The first time it basically cleared itself after I opened the panel, I opened the valve on the bottom to troubleshoot the problem and the burner fired up, steam came out of the exhaust and it was fine until a bad storm came through again last night. This morning I woke up to a code 11 again. Went out, opened the panel, opened the valve, and nothing. I could smell the gas, the blower was blowing air but no ignition. I cycled it maybe 20 times...no joy. Took my cold shower went to work, came home and all is good after it had time to dry out. The unit is 11 years old. It seems rain is getting in (maybe blown into the exhaust) but this hasn't happened before. What do I need to do, replace, etc. to prevent this from happening?

    I have a Rinnai R75S, here in Canada. It was working with a lot of fluctuation in temperature for several days, then quit on me. I discovered it has no condensate drainage and when I removed the little temporary loose fitting black plastic cap thick black goop starting coming out. If it poured out that would be great but its too tick to drain, I have no idea how to flush it without disassembling it, which seems unlikely to be possible anyway, so I'll call a licensed service tech. I can't imagine when no condensate drainage would ever be OK. Amazing it has worked for years without this issue manifesting before. 2 45 degree elbows right of the heater, then 2 feet of piping to get out and through the wall.

    Mike, Thank you for all your great informative videos. Just yesterday we got a code 11 on our R94 when the heater would try and light but would shut off after exhausting unburnt gas. The flame rods and igniter were covered with scale so I cleaned them off as you had shown on a previous video. Once back together the Heater wouldn't start. I rechecked my steps and everything was back together. After checking and rechecking i found the 3 wire hall sensor from the inlet valve had fallen off due to the deteriorating rubber or glue. I cleaned and epoxied the sensor back on and all is now well. Is this a replaceable sensor without the valve? Would this have caused the intermittent ignition ( code 11) ? Mark

    Hi,
    I have a ridiculous intermittent failure occurring on my fathers RL94i tankless.
    The system will run and cycle, then intermittent trip code 11/12 which seems to happen on the same flame sensor. Red wire centered between ignitor and yellow F.S.
    I've removed my burner, fan, gas port assemblies. Ensured all is clean. Flame sensor is cleaned and I physically see the sensor in the flame. On my meter I have 24v to ground on the sensor, rectifying at above 1 MA. Therefore this meets spec. I do not understand how the board is tripping this into a code 11/12 when flame rectification is measurable. Therefore I replaced the board. I still have the same intermittent failure. Gas pressures are to spec, dip switches set to correct settings.
    What else can I be missing?
    I've even swapped a few solenoids to see if the individual solenoid was faulty. Still, reoccurs

    Been out of hot water for three days now with my unit. Plumbers have come out three times and are coming back today for a fourth time. My unit comes on water heats and less than 30 seconds chokes out and stops. Plumber had it working heating water yesterday only when water was running at half pressure from faucet. Once full pressure comes on unit chokes out. Love this unit but these freezing showers suck and it has been cold in 40's here in North Florida. Hopefully they will figure it out today. Also had my gas company put on new regulator yesterday. Code 12 showing. Had unit installed in 2019. Plumber cleaned burner, coils above burner. Took shower last night with shower head button pushed in to slow water pressure to half the pressure and within a few minutes water turned cold.

    I have the RL94i, installed about 9 years ago, now w/ code 11. It turns out condensate seems to dripping into the unit causing corrosion (I have condensate drain, but apparently condensate is bypassing this?). It is dripping directly above from within the unit, so it is not visible without removing the cover. I cleaned the ignitor/ rods assembly, which seems to have temporarily solved the problem, but I need to figure out why I'm getting liquid dripping down all over all the internals. I have the unit in my basement crawl space with a raised snorkel termination in NE climate (to get above snow)

      Check the small 1/3” tube coming out of the vent and if you can check the flue collar for blockage. Mike

    Ive installed new unit. Works fine then randomly twice it has given code 11. Unit has been installed aprx. 1 month. 3/4 main gas line ran to the unit. About 60’ run from meter to unit. Along that gas line are t’s that feed the cooktop, hvac, and fireplace. Do you see issue with gas supply. Have you seen new units giving faulty ignitor codes

    • @ThatTanklessGuy
      @ThatTanklessGuy  2 года назад

      Code 11 is a big code it’s mostly ignition failure but could include gas. That’s gas run us rite on the edge of being to long. I would have run a direct line to the tankless. You need to also look at the grounding of the unit if it’s inside does it have a good ground at the plug and if it’s outside us it grounded correctly.

    Hi Mike. Great video. Quick question. When I look through the inspection window where you can see the flame when the unit is operating. I notice sometimes the whole burner doesn't light all the way. It seems that sometimes it will light completely and sometimes the left side doesn't light. It still operates but I'm confused why it's not lighting the whole thing. I was getting a code 11 and cleaned the ignitors and flame sensors. It seemed to help with throwing the code but it seems like the unit has no idea it's not lighting completely

      The unit step fires the whole burner will only completely fire on high fire

    dose a pc824p need extra propane regulator is one on 250 gallon propane tank enough?

    • @ThatTanklessGuy
      @ThatTanklessGuy  2 года назад

      It depends what regulator is on the tank there’s a 20 pound snd a 2 pound. You would need the appropriate second stage regulator near the unit. Some times depending on how close the tankless is the tank regulator could be an inches one.

    Hello Mike, I have a Rinnai R85 that was originally installed in 2007 which has been working great. Long story short I ran out of propane at my house and was receiving an error code 12 on my wall controller. After having the propane tank refilled, I was still not able to get the water heater working. After refill I now was getting an error code 11. I've replaced both (Electrode, Flame Rod, & Gasket Kit) and (Ignitor). My Rinnai 85 is still not working. Any help would be greatly appreciated?

      Was this unit brand new out of the box, did you or a professional install it. Did you have a gas tank heater, and is it natural or propane gas. What’s the full model number.

      Sigh….. I’m not winning. I really have learned a lot from you. I’m not a pro installer but a long time handyman and aircraft mechanic. I purchased a V94i a few months ago and completed the install but ran out of time to troubleshoot. REU-VC2837FFU-US. Natural gas. In the garage. Replacing a previous unit that worked great for 15 years. Mono meter shows 8.5WC dropping to 7.4 when trying to start. H2O pressure is 50ish. --turning it on then a hot water faucet will attempt to heat. I hear what sounds like gas flow and then an igniter will cause a rather noticeable gas “pop” (like a delayed ignition) but doesn’t stay lit then shows a code 11. I have reviewed the install manual again and all appears correct. What am I missing? Seems like a gas issue? Thoughts?

    Hi Mike, I have a Rannai V75 it’s 6 yrs old. Getting the error code 11, cleaned the electrode assembly, checked the ignitor for spark didn’t get any so I ordered and replaced the ignitor but still no hot water. Could the main board be bad?

Well I went to empty tank and as soon as I release water pressure valve the water heater turned on??? Now it’s running fine! Can I get an expert explanation as to what happened?

    • @TheBuddylab
      @TheBuddylab 3 года назад +1

      Juan, a 6 bathroom house would require two unites. One RUR199EN and one RU199EN The RUR will give recirculating capability and the RU unit will be there to take over any additional load.
