She may not realize it but she really is revolutionizing the beauty ideals in DR. I went last August and for the first time, I saw women in their natural hair textures and it really made me so happy to see.
Beautiful to see Afro Latinas who take pride in their roots and inspire women to love their natural hair is amazing, i know in DR if you have curly or kinky hair it’s considered “bad” but i love that there’s people like her who broke free from that idea and decided for herself that it’s not true.
Ash Slays yeah basically because of the Spanish European beauty standards is it considered pelo malo not anymore
Rosie Rosario yes i know lol
We are embracing our natural hair
Judith Peña Varela yes but what I’m trying to say is that BEFORE it was look down upon to have kinky curly coily hair. That’s why many girls would get their hair straightened often because having that type of hair was not okay.
Judith Peña Varela well for me I’m Dominican and I have straight hair naturally
"If I can leave my community, my country, my world just a tiny bit better." I like that 😊. That's something we should all strive for.
Yeah, importing racist American identity politics to the DR. Will definitely "improve" our community.
SagaciousNihilist how is her opening a natural hair shop for women “importing racist American politics” in DR...?
@@SagaciousNihilist exactly!
Women highlighting women and giving them their flowers while they are still HERE!!! Uggghhh my heart is exploding right now with so much happiness.
ChibiCheez riiiiiiiiiight
Where exactly is the salon located?
I’m going to DR this friday and my mom is already telling me to straighten in my curls because she doesn’t want people over there thinking we’re “poor or crazy”. There’s still a long way to go in cultural acceptance of our African ancestry. But I love my natural hair and it’s been two year since I last permed my hair and last March I did my big chop. All that has made me embrace my roots.
Melissa Tavarez thank you I just starting loving my curls and I’m not going back 💪🏽
When i stayed in the Dominican, my host mother had very long, curly hair. Nobody treated her different. Just show up and OWN IT! Slay til your hair turns grey sis
Go there and rock your curls!!!! Be proud how God made you!!!!! 😍
That's a thing from the past, here you can see how girls are embracing her natural hair. It's so cool now
kiany rosa It’s mainly the older ones who might look at u
I started crying when the interviewer started crying. It makes me sooooo happy to see black women waking up much love!
honestly this is revolutionary for Dominicans
Only for the lambones amcomplejados. Like those two racial ideologues in the video.
America Burgos uhhmmm, no it’s not! Lol
Ernireg3 it is.
@@Ernireg3 it is, I live there and the majority(? Of the girls here relax their hair and want to have it straight(?
The real realidad❤️
I’ve personally been to Miss Rizos salon in DR and the vibe and the employees are amazing. I got box braids done for only $70USD and girl was I SHOOK at how amazing they were done. I have a full head of thick curly hair that’s past my shoulders but when stretched they’re down to my waist. They finished the braids in 4 hours and on top of that they were medium thickness and reached mid butt. I wanna go back to DR just to get my braids done again and for that price 😂 loveeee this salon and I’ll deff be back when I go back to DR! 🇩🇴🇩🇴❤️
I remember first hearing about this Salon way back when. It was crazy because I am Barbadian and Panamanian and I went to a Panamanian hair salon. The lady would always relax my hair and when I went natural her solution was to press it every weekend. The idea that straight hair is the only “presentable” style is so ingrained in different cultures it’s crazy. One day I just stopped going to the salon and decided to figure my own hair out, 8 years later I’m still loving my natural hair.
Walking in a Dominican salon 10 years ago they would stare at you cause you choose to wear your tresses in its natural state. Or whisper words such as " Pelo Malo" or "no es bueno para los negocios" Now being natural is glorified or those one that state such hate are now Natural.
You not even domi so you better stop sayin shit
Really the same for me growing up in the US. The black community in the US, no matter what part, from New York to LA, Washington DC to Miami, we talk about "good" hair. I remember once, years ago, somebody said something about someone having good hair. An older guy (losing his hair) spoke up and said "it's all good hair, if you got hair on your head". It caused a bit of laughter, but it was really a serious thing.
Afro Latinas are just DOMINATING!!!!!!
I’m so Proud of being Dominicana and de mi curly hair también 🇩🇴👑
LISSET OVALLES amen sister 🇩🇴 🙏
You can be proud because CURLY hair is La Perfección mami😍😘
I dont have curly hair i have more than curly i have really thick hair im half Dominican
Aww, her story on going back to the motherland was so sad! If I'm ever in the DR, I'll have to give this salon a try. And of course there's a lot of natural hair salon every, but if she wants to put the spotlight on this woman and her story/salon then let HER TELL HER STORY! Geez, people!
I got my first curly cut with them while on my trip to DR this year. Such nice and beautiful girls. I wish them all the success in the world. 💛
this made me so emotional. I’m Dominican and Ecuadorian & I was born and raised in the Bronx surrounded by a lot of Dominicans. Therefore I always felt the necessity of straightening my natural 3b curls when I was only 5. I’ve been trying to transition back for almost 3 years & all I want is my curls back. ( fun fact I’m actually going to DR tmr lol 🇩🇴 ) pero que viva la cultura dominicana coño!🇩🇴
We need one of these in PR too!🇵🇷🇩🇴✊🏿 Asap
Yesss
@S C I was just about to say that...I get my hair done in Bayamon or Lozia when in PR
My whole family on my dads side of the family all lives in Dominican Republic . I can't wait to go there one day. Damn I need to go that hair salon with my curly head self lol 😂
Y'all should put a like if u a Dominican
Not Dominican but Boricua is close enough
Here in DR we have several hair salons dedicated to curly natural hair.... Specially in the colonial zone... 😉
You're lucky to have family there My dad immigrated when he was as a kid because he escaped in the 50s. My family settled in Puerto Rico instead, so I guess that's close enough!
You won’t regret it girl. This place is 👌...
🇩🇴
Its beautiful you really should go
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!! I think that it's important for Dominicans to be comfortable with their natural hair. When I first went natural I got backlash from the women in my family mostly because Dominican women were taught to love their natural hair instead they were taught to keep their hair straight. I hope this video can change how Dominican women see themselves when it comes to their hair. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

RATING
I’m Puerto Rican. And when I went natural my mother ignored me for 2-3 weeks. Because my hair to her is too black and needs to be straightened to be healthy. Colorism and European beauty standards needs to stop in the Latin community. We’re all mixed. My family has more afrikan ancestry than they want to admit
SagaciousNihilist People wear extensions, weave, etc. for multiple reasons. As protective styling against harsh weather, to help grow out their hair, because they want to try a different look but don’t want to damage their natural hair.
Also not only black women wear weave or get perms (:
SagaciousNihilist wanting to change your hair up or try a hairstyle isn’t being ashamed of your hair or hiding a texture. I’m 1000000% black and I’ve hadn’t had any chemical in my hair since elementary school and my hair is curly so that statement is invalid. Your argument is hella invalid and hella ignorant.
SagaciousNihilist America black women literally started the natural hair movement. Are you okay? You seem really upset in the comments about the topic of this video.
She’s rad for living out her dreams and overcoming adversity. Continue to shine queen! And that goes to the both of you strong and beautiful women! 💪🏾♥️
I got emotional as well and I'm not even Dominican lol.
Besos desde Argentina
Argentina is awesome! I studied there for a month this past summer. Lovely. You know that café chain McNor? The tallarines con salsa rosa is FLAMEEEE
Dont forget about medialunas!!! I missed Argentina for that reason.
Okay right. But Americans did a lot of the same evil stuff. That doesn't make me (an American) an evil person. I wasn't there, and I would never condone the horrible actions that were taken in the past and present. So that doesn't make every Argentine person evil. I was there, I took an entire course on the unfortunate history of Argentina, and I know what happened. However, I'd never blame the entire country for the actions of some people.
When I lived in Argentina, I heard the same thing. Do you have any books about it?
All of my class was online with no physical book, but I'm sure if you look it up you can find a bunch of info(:
I'm not Dominican. I don't know what all i am except that I'm Black. But I wish I have a salon like this in my area!
What’s crazy is that whenever I go back to DR, all I see are people of all colors and hair textures. All Dominicans are BEAUTIFUL! However we’re constantly influenced to believe that white skin and straight hair is the ideal. I’m so inspired by this story ❤️🇩🇴
This brings tears to my eyes I love how natural hair is being more praised in DR. I love to see it. ❤️
As a curly hair Dominican I know HOW BIG HAIR IS FOR OUR PEOPLE. You're called a pajonua from day 1, you're told to brush your hair when you 'just did it', you're told day in and out, and in some many ways to negate your blackness. I think this salon is such a great symbol of what to love and how to love it!
...I'm not gonna cry...nope...wait ...I'm gonna bawl my eyes out!!! Such a beautiful story!!♥️
As soon as Julissa started getting choked up, I had to hold back those happy tears. I would love to go to DR to support this amazing salon.
Everyone is so beautiful. When Julissa started crying it made me think of all the pent up pain and trauma she must have went through just because of her hair and she's just ONE Dominican woman. Hair texture isn't something I ever had to think about until 3 years ago when I learnt that hair, isn't JUST hair. And knowing that that in itself is a privilege is just sad and terrible. Personally I've always wanted my pincer straight Chinese hair to have more bounce and texture. I'd always thought of wavy and curly hair as more beautiful and I wanted it badly. Also, if you think that super textured hair is unkempt, messy, dirty, and unprofessional, I think the key word here is "well-kept". And the same goes for all types of hair. "Pelo malo" defies gravity without the use of any products (Taraji P. Henson!), and isn't that so wonderful and great?
I dunno if other people do this but I embrace my curls in a way to honor my African heritage😭😭
Love my DR, I'm just like her born in DR and raised in the US. When I was young I always wanted to have my hair straight and a few years ago I learned to love it and embrace it! In DR discrimination still exist and we have to fight for it to end. I remember people telling me " wow your hair is so soft" whenever they touched it because my hair is curly I guess they assumed it wasn't soft, I hated when they said that. I think all hair is beautiful no matter what texture or color so who cares what people say or think! People are always going to have an opinion so no matter what, believe in yourself and embrace those beautiful curls God gave us!!!
i love and admire how generous julissa is with her spirit.... true queen
Finally ! a dominican that think like me every time I tell anyone I like they hair just natural they look at me like i'm crazy {tenemos el colonialismo muy arraigado aún }but, I see we are changing .
This video is so good. Topic. Style. Vibe. Message. All of it. Fantastic work on this. Amazing.
I feel Julissa on her vision!! I wasn't born in Honduras but my entire family is Honduran & I feel 100% Honduran at heart & I would love to give back to my communities in Honduras & build something that will make people feel good about themselves just like Carolina did. Awesome video!!
I remember Carolina shared her process on facebook and I felt: she gets me! I went through that transition at 12-13 years old, and there were wounds I didn't know I still had, and seing her journey, her apreciation for our natural beauty made me heal! thank you Caro, I always wanted to say it! I hope I can go to Miss Rizos soon! Thank you Julissa for this beautiful video!
I went to that salon last summer and it left my hair feeling amazing and Carolina was so sweet it was so great
Julissa is in her feelings and I am here for it! Both of you are so profoundly inspirational 💛
I was in Santo Domingo, DR last year visiting my boyfriends family! I got my hair done for the first time in a different culture and I lived how they did my hair!
When Julissa started crying 😩😭
OMG freaking love this video. Growing up in DR always found curly hair so beautiful but been called moño malo and you should get a perm. Worst decision I ever made. Thank God i came to USA where people don’t give a fuck how you look (especially NY people really don’t care) but my family were so unsupportive even my mom, I don’t really blame them I mean we were taught that in DR but I keep going not giving a damn of what my family say and guess what 3 years later almost all of them are transitioning to their natural hair even my mom. Miss Rizos help me a lot to found my identity and not be ashamed on how I look cause God made me like this. So proud to be Afro-Dominican 🇩🇴
I’m still struggling through high school and deciding what I want to do when I get to college. Just to hear about her story is so beautiful and inspiring, truly.
I love this! Thanks Julissa for all of the love you show the culture.
I’ve been to MissRizos and fell so I love with it!!! I go every summer when I visit DR and was so happy to have a space where I felt my hair was acceptable in the middle of the oldest cities of America. Being natural in DR is a struggleee because of humidity and heat but also because of cultural in acceptance of curly hair but with a salon like this it’s all slowly being changed. All of the ladies are so knowledgeable and the atmosphere is so welcoming that you leave feeling like you can do anything in your natural state bc you can!! Every year I go back I see more and more girls with their natural kinks and coils and I couldn’t be more proud
In this salon I started my curly hair journey in May of 2017 (I have a video on my channel about it), unfortunately at the moment my self-esteem was on the floor and I didn't want to cut my hair, so I started my "transition" process, one month goes by and I got the impulse to go to a salon and just cut my hair, I didn't go to Miss Rizos and went to another famous curly hair salon in DR and the lady that cut my hair was JUST learning how to do it, so basically i was left bald lol Cutting my hair taught me so much about myself and about self-acceptance. I love what this salon is promoting in my country and I feel proud that every day more people in my very judgeamental country are coming to their senses that the hair that comes out of our head is perfect just the way it is.
Ugh the beginning brings me back to when I was in El Salvador this summer! 🇸🇻 ugh my Spanish is rusty, but the people are so accepting. I LOVE LATINO/ HISPANIC CULTURE
Have goose bumps watching this video . This is great a salon that embraces our natural curls instead of trying to colonize it by perms and blow drying 😍😍👏🏼👏🏼
I have never seen a natural salon I the DR, I lived there for 12 years
elvianny matos yeah
Ya existe varios, todavia no hay tantos. El que más conozco hasta ahora es Miss Rizos y Arantxa Natural Hair son mis favoritos. Vivo en Santo Domingo. Y me arreglo en esos salones
Wow this has made me cry, you guys are amazingly inspiring the real us Dominicans. Learning how to embrace our culture is a bless. Thank you 😊
I love seeing women be there authentic selves . This is so beautiful 😍
IT IS SOOOOOOOOOOO BREATH TAKING TO SEE AFRO LATINAS EMBRACE AND NOT SHUN BEING FROM THE DIASPORA OF AFRICA! MY GOODNESS! Sis is so beautiful and this was a very special episode, true to the heart. No Mas Pelo Malo y Pelo Beuno, come as you are in all of your natural beauty because all of you is a beauty.
Omg I love your videos and I was happy when I saw the first seconds of it bc I know exactly where u are. My family and I went to Santo Domingo in April and they got married there as well. The wedding was so much fun! It was the best time of my life and I really want to go back. Ever since I’ve been there I’ve been obsessed with everything Dominican and I wish I was but I’m actually Mexican.
Anyone else here who is not Spanish or Dominican or American but loves the content.
I can relate to Carolina so much it’s so heartbreaking to feel like a place and a culture are such a part of your identity and the second you get there they reject you I’m Mexican American I speak spanish and I’ve lived in Mexico city for 7 years and people everyday still ask me if i’m a tourist just because I’m güerita and speak a little different but at the end of the day I know who I am and couldn’t be more orgullosa de ser Mexicana y latina ❤️
Erin Azcona-Beam I feel you, I got family in Mexico City and sometimes they think I’m a stereotype lol they think I mostly only like to eat burgers and don’t eat much Mexican food and know that much but I’m always like “no, I don’t eat burgers everyday and I’ve eaten this before, my moms made t lmfao” they also think I don’t understand them sometimes so they talk Spanish slow, and I gotta tell them that I do understand but sometimes when they use slang is when I get thrown off. The struggle lol
I would have never imagined that DR would be open to the idea of natural hairstyles. I am so glad to hear about this salon, thank you Julissa for bringing us this amazing video. Growing up and still now around my Dominican family and friends I constantly hear negative comments about wearing our hair naturally. I don’t have curly hair, mine is on the wavy side but I am still being told to straighten my hair when I go to family reunions or parties. Finally, I just want to say thank you for this video. There is still hope for change in this world! ❤️ I feel very hopeful after watching this video.
Julissa I’m crying with you ❤️❤️❤️ love love love her and what she’s doing
I'm so motivated. Many tell me to not even think about having a life in DR. But this is a prime example that it's possible. She represents what I aspire to be. I too made that transition from having my hair straightened and relaxed to going completely natural. It's been 6 years now and I don't regret it. I'm so proud to see a fellow Dominican woman be successful and be an activist of change and progress for the culture. Loved this and thank you Julissa for sharing ❤❤❤🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴
This is amazing I am half Dominican and barely know much. Ofcourse when the music play I am pure Dominican. You both are inspiring hope gadiel was there it would be funny. If you could give a tour of D.R in a video. Of some awesome hiding places would be so cool.
Karen D ur really pretty what else r u mixed with
I love Julissa! Her energy, humor/quick wit, warm personality, all bring so much joy to me, I love this channel. Julissa's is my best friend in my head hahaha
I am speechless. Sending all the love to Carolina and to you, Julissa. You are both doing so much for your communities. I really have no words.
This is such an inspiring, heartfelt video. Beautiful job, Julissa!!
Julissa! You are a beautiful soul! I am neither Dominican nor curly haired but my God this moved me! You and Carolina were amazing together. To see two such passionate people with so much positivity made me feel so good to see and hear! When you began tearing up I felt it as well, you will accomplish what you are dreaming of . This was a wonderfully made video! Thank you Julissa and Carolina! Good job ladies! ❤️ HUGS
Im Puerto Rican but this touched me very special beautiful souls. I follow Miss Rizos since 2013 I big chopped, shes a huge inspiration. Blessings to you both. Preciosas! 💕
This was so needed and necessary. Thank you 💖👑
No pude evitar volverme mocos y lágrimas al final 😭 me encanta Carolina , el salón, lo que hace , me hace sentir orgullosa como mujer natural , como dominicana ♥️
This is great bro I grew up hating my hair in my Dominican family after I came to the U.S I learned how to take care of my natural beautiful pajon thanks to black women and RUclips videos.
I relate to this on so many levels. You ladies are dope! 🙌🏽🙏🏽👏🏽🇩🇴🖤🙋🏽
Min. 3:08 that's me. I've paid a lot of money to go into the salon and walk out and have *un pajon* minutes later that's why I hate going to the salon in D.R. 'cause it doesn't last. I was in Baní once walking down the street with my long curly hair and I heard how another female was laughing and commenting negatively on my hair cause it was frizzy. I just couldn't understand that much ignorance. Yo felicito tu iniciativa!!! D.R. was definitely not ready for this one, but it needs to get with the program.
I have to go there my rizos need some professional attention
Mely Diaz same it be like that😭😭
Mely Diaz same. Because I don’t have kinky hair but my hair is curly and dry and thick and I have no clue what products to use
Thank U. Women of color around the world embrace Ur roots and natural hair. So proud of you!
This is so inspiring & heartwarming. I wish you both only great things. Keep Changing the world!
Beautiful and historical Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo, founded in 1496. I love the Eupropean architecture and influence of our Spanish ancestors.
Great video and wonderful intentions and significance behind the launch of Miss Rizos! I waited too late to get an appointment there when I was in SD this summer so I went to another natural hair salon called Go Natural Caribe and got a nice cut! Love this channel and the content is 👌🏽 La Zona Colonial was hot as hell in July 😁 beautiful place!
I LOVE THIS!! DR IS SOO BEAUTIFULLL!!
Thank you for sharing her journey! Great messages!
Omg, this video got me all teary eyed. I'm Dominican and I decided to wear my curly hair proudly almost 9 years ago. My mom and some of my cousins have actually followed suit, which makes me so happy. I'm teaching my daughters to love their curly hair as well. It's a wonderful thing. #MoñoMaloDonde 😌
music made me wanna dance lol
lizbeth
Lol right
Same
I cried watching this. Thank you 🙏
Man I wish I could visit Santo Domingo
You're welcome always to be here
Beautiful!! Julissa gurl you made me tear up!!
I am visiting my home country,Sudan in a few days and watching you having fun in DR makes me excited
I loved this so much Julissa! Thank you. 🙏🏽
I'm a Puerto Rican bushy-babe, and I'm proud of my roots (pun intended) despite being considered to have "pelo malo" by some of the Mexicans here in California.
Hating part of yourself, and not loving yourself totally- it's madness.
I, and all my bushy-babe sisters (and brothers) out there are perfect- perfectly human in all our dazzling array of colors and hair textures. Rock on!
Every time I watch this, I am in tears🙈🙈. It is so beautiful and I love ❤️ message behind this video🙂. I hope someday to visit the salon 🙂. Best wishes to you both
Tears.....just beautiful
Yeah!!! un video en República Dominicana y de rizos... Congratulations Carolina 😊
