Untangling the Roots of Dominican Hair

  • In the hot and humid Dominican Republic, most women straighten their naturally curly hair in an effort to conform to deeply ingrained, yet outdated, standards of beauty. But Carolina Contreras is slowly changing this societal norm. Not only does she proudly rock her big curls, she’s helping other women do the same at her natural hair salon. Fondly nicknamed "Miss Rizos," which means Miss Curls in English, Carolina has come to embody self-love and acceptance on the island.

    Here in Dominican republic, the most common type of hair is curly, but that kind of hair receives too much hate, that most of people straighten it. Thanks she inspired me to let my curly hair show up.

    As a dominican, I don't understand why everyone here is so obsessed about having straight hair. I'm jabá (someone with white skin and blonde hair and african characteristics like really curly hair and wide nose) I've tried to leave my hair natural for a year and all I ever get from strangers to my family is "you look so wierd" or "when are you going to the salon" or "your hair is so ugly like that, wouldn't you look more delicate if you went to the salon?"(and yes,I do take care of my hair).
    I got tired of always wanted to have my hair straight and if I ever stopped going to the salon, feel insecure about my hair.
    ...And also the heat really damages hair, guys.

    • @dicathy2
      @dicathy2 7 лет назад +12

      you shouldn't feel insecure. It's your head, your heritage don't let anyone discourage you. Your hair is beautiful in all of his states. Your haircut should never depend on other people opinions because people always find something to critisize. You're more that just a hairstyle.

    I'm from Jamaica ( we have a similar attitude towards our natural hair though its not as terrible it is obvious the attitude towards it) and I think this is something very common in the Caribbean. Its not a very good thing for peoples self confidence but it changing now because of people like this. Our natural hair is being noticed on a global scale and becoming more accepted.

    There's just something about natural hair that just elevates a woman's beauty. They look stronger. Perhaps that's why society doesn't approve? God forbid a woman resemble Mother Earth. These ladies are symbols of strength, beauty, nurture and confidence. 🌈

    • @narcis3720
      @narcis3720 7 лет назад +10

      That's what I meant by natural hair--the naturally curly hair that isn't chemically straightened. Don't get me wrong. Straight hair is beautiful too. It's just the naturally curly hair, to me, looks so confident and strong.

    I think there has been a shift in society as whole as far as how hair texture is perceived.
    Curly hair is very in right now, just like beard for men, they used to be seen as unkept and now men purposely go for that look. But remember it's not only about the fad, it's about being comfortable in your own skin. so kudos for that.

      Well they're partly of some Spanish descent because of their tanly brown skin and curly hair.

      Natti Dread not really. Not every African looks the same many Africans have blind hair of loose curls but I get that's they're mixed because they're from the new world. If you look at DNA test they actually come out with British or Italian or Irish but the Lowest seems to be Spanish.
