    One of my besties is Afro-Dominican and her abuela told me she was proud of me for wearing my natural hair she said she wishes she wore hers but couldn't. At first I was like "girl just rock it" but I see now that it simply wasn't possible. My friend went natural after me and we love our hair. This is really eye opening and I wish for everyone to be in a state that celebrates them for who they are.

    I never knew about Rafael Trujillo - DR has such a dark history. Now the anti-black sentiment makes complete sense. It honestly hurts when I read/watch stuff like this, black people have truly been through so much and it hurts that we’re only treated this way because of our skin tone and hair, attributes that are beyond our control and are literally just features. That being said, hopefully the younger generation can finally embrace their natural beauty and undo all the indoctrination that has been passed down from the older generation.

    • @TheCurlPapi
      @TheCurlPapi  Год назад +6

      To be completely honest there’s people in the younger that are just as bad or worse, makes me sick. But one day I pray we can all just be people, no hate, no discrimination just people

      @@TheCurlPapi I have said forever that Haitians and Dominicans are family. It’s beyond weird that culturally speaking, Haitians are "black” and Dominicans are “white.” These are social/political constructs on both sides because the truth is there are blacks, whites, Spanish, Taino, Jews, Germans, Scandinavian , British, French, Polish, Lebanese (you name it on both sides). And frankly, there are too many families in both sides related to each other for centuries, and a common historical foundation. Sure we have differences, but we have more that’s the same. God bless Haiti and DR : one family!❤

    It’s a shame. Natural hair is so beautiful! And I love Amara La Negra for embracing hers! Makes me mad that people would mock her but I’m not surprised. 😔

    • @TheCurlPapi
      @TheCurlPapi  Год назад +5

      Amara has come such a long way I’m so proud of her. Im not gonna lie I’m a little shocked because when you see racism or anti blackness from Dominicans it’s never out in the open and to blatantly do it on live television is beyond me, like who approved it and didn’t think it was an issue.

      @@TheCurlPapi Right?! It's so aggravating how common and widespread anti-Blackness is in Latin America. I think a lot of non-Black Latinos think they're better than Afrolatinos but they forget that they're not white either, so where's the unity?!

    This is a good video. I knew a bit of the history of DR (my parents are from Haiti and reading about it ). The idea of having straight is like a rite of passage. I don't live in Haiti but there is a new wave of natural salons now. Mentalities are slowly changing like in the black communities in the US and around the world. This was an excellent video.

    This is an amazing video! I'm Puerto Rican with alot of Dominican family members and I had no idea about the dictator history. I can also definitely relate to alot of what you spoke on. I think I was 10 when I got my first relaxer because my Mother (also a hairdresser) found it easier to deal with my hair that way.

    Eres inteligente y bien documentado dominicano. Las influencias de los famosos en cine y TV tienen un papel destacado en la moda de la Republica Dominicana, las novelas, películas, etc. El pelo rizado no siempre es fácil de manejar en el día a día. La facilidad de estilistas de belleza tanto en salones como en patios hace que el pelo desrizado sea una opción. En este momento existen productos para estilizar rizos, tiempo atrás no. Dios te bendice. Un abrazo!

    Thanks for the historical breakdown regarding colorism and texturism in the DR. It certainly isn’t much different than what happened in the US.
    In one of your slides you mentioned that 70% of the people were of African or Spanish descendants and included Black and White. In this case, what ethnicity do you consider Black?

    • @TheCurlPapi
      @TheCurlPapi  Год назад +3

      The information came from the Molecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine website, I’m sure the black they reference is of Haitian ethnicity considering they share the island but in general the site wasn’t specific on on the origins of the ethnicity. I’ll link the study if you’d like to check it out.

    When talking about Trujillo, many people only focus on his Haitian genocide but seem to forget his obsession with "cleansing" the dominican ethnicity. He really dared to bring people running from Nazism and Francisco Franco's dictatorship, in order to erase Black/dark skinned dominicans. I can't imagine those immigrants thinking they'll be freed from tirany only to find themselves in Trujillo's hands. Wonderful mini-documentary! 🇩🇴

      I don’t recall saying in the video that curly hair is a “black” thing. if I did do you mind time stamping it? This videos is the relationship people of the Dominican Republic have to their natural hair and how years of oppression made them hate their natural hair. If you received a different message I would encourage you to rewatch the video.
