Did a guided bowfishing trip once where some young bucks shot and then threw away at least 30 alligator gar just before we went out. Made me sick to see that many fish killed and tossed just for sport. I'd love to see more guides show fishing enthusiasts how to clean and use the meat. Great video.

Have loved Gar since I was a little boy. Biggest catch I ever made, before bagging a 57 inch Bull Redrum. (Never got to weigh it. Old Cajun gut I was with said, "Quick! While it's still alive, hang it by the head and cut deep into the tail. Bleed it out and the meat won't get oily or fishey!" He nailed it! Got over 19 Lbs of filetes, that cooked up so white and flakey!!! YUMMMMMMMM)
Hate to be that guy :-), but I am a big planes guy, and that was an F-15 Eagle. You can tell by the 2 straight up tails. The F-18 has slanted tails. Love your videos!

I've had gar a few times and never had any issues with it. I've had freshwater drum as well (gaspergou). It's decent. I liked the gar better. That shirt the guide had on had a grinnel, bowfin, chopique.. all the same thing. They are hard to eat, mushy and you have to eat them while they are hot. Guess I've eaten most of what swims crawls or flies.
Grinnel is delicious!!!! You have to know how to clean it and cook it. Not just fishcake... I fillet mine, almost frozen though. They have to be cold. Fry them and you got some good eating

Battery operated angle grinder with a cutting disk makes short work of that armor plating. No snips needed. Just don't cut to deep only need to scratch through a little. Really easy and saves your know work for meat only.
