    ------------------------------------------------------------
Everybody knows that cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs are addictive, but sugar flies under the radar. But it absolutely should not!
For decades, there has been a growing body of scientific research that shows sugar is as addictive as any other substance of use and abuse because sugar too can elevate dopamine and activate the dopamine reward pathway.
If a dopamine-spiking substance is consumed in sufficient quantities over an extended amount of time, physical dependency can develop and it can morph into addiction.
When we pause to contemplate that, the implications are serious and terrifying.
    Why?
This is a substance that shows up in 70-80% of all the food sold in our grocery stores. This is a substance that we use to celebrate and socialize. This is a substance that we use to comfort ourselves and express love.
This is a substance that is directly and indirectly linked to every known modern, chronic disease. All of them. It is the most inflammatory substance we could possibly eat or drink. And yet we consume it every day. Sometimes every meal.
And let me be clear... By sugar, I mean added sugars such as sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, etc, not the small amounts of sugar that naturally shows up in whole foods such as fruits and vegetables.
Interestingly, the World Health Organization as far back in 1989 made international recommendations based on medical evidence that men should consume no more than 9 teaspoons of sugar per day, and women no more than six. Ideally less.
No country in the world is coming anywhere close to achieving these targets. And it is important to understand why.
