My two grandmothers were Victorian and Edwardian ladies living in the North East of England - they both knew that bread, biscuits, cakes and chocolate made you fat and were to be eaten as rare treats - to stay lean you ate meat and two veg and never eat late at night - both lived into their 90’s and were slim and healthy right up to the last two weeks of their lives. Why have we forgotten what they took for granted as common knowledge?

I'm from NW England and this is so so true. My great grandparents would never have dreamed of trimming the fat off meat or wasting the lard or dripping and they certainly never drank sugar like fruit juice or soft drinks. Yet by the time I was born in the 1980s I was being raised on this crappy 'healthy' low fat high carb diet. I'm now 14lb overweight and a sugar addict and fighting it through keto and intermittent fasting so my kids don't suffer the same fate.

Back in my early 30s, so 30 some odd years ago, I started drinking those MUGS of Mt. Dew. At least one a day! It was my go to energy source. I worked hard raising a large family and loved yard work, gardening, landscaping etc. Little did I know then, it would backfire on me with extreme Hyper-insulinism, excessive weightgain and very poor health. The bromelain alone almost destroyed my thyroid gland. I think these soft drinks are a tool of Satan to slowly destroy us. Sugar and really everything we shove into our mouths done in excess, is poison to our bodies. Thankfully there are good Docs like Dr. Berry to teach us a way out. God bless you sir. ♡♡♡ I started listening to your videos back in 10/18. Started KWOE, IF, now OMAD. My body is shedding the unhealthy fat and all markers are improving. @@Peachy10236 I grew up in a home where we were directly taught that white bread was food for the ducks. We lived close to a lake and fed the ducks white bread. My mother sought out every health food store and local vendor of things such as goat’s milk. At best we had lemon or orange Gatorade, never Pepsi nor Coke. Oh, that reminds me that we did have ginseng soda. Not a great substitute but close enough. When I was a teen, I practically lived at my friend’s house one summer and I literally ate half a bag of Wonder Bread by sliding out a few pieces, mashed up in my sugar loving fist, and scarfed it down in the restroom right off of her kitchen. With the increased independence that came with hanging out with her, the proximity of a convenience store in walking distance, and a few bucks from my mom, I sure enough used that money to satisfy my sugar addiction, buying French onion dip and Ruffles, soda and cookies and candy.
I’m not saying don’t try to keep your kids from sugar. Just keep my experience in mind. I grew up surrounded by the best possible foods and mindset. Looking back, I think the pattern was I turned to food when I was in emotional pain. My dad died when I was six and I still remember marveling at my bad choices a year or two later, age 7-11, going to the fridge to get a tub of margarine, a butter knife, and a sleeve of saltines to eat in my room while reading a book; 😂 we didn’t have cookies, chips, nor ice cream in the house so that was the closest thing.
I can’t blame my mom. She did her very best to train us to eat properly. It’s the world. You can’t avoid these things. Your kids will eventually get introduced to something sweet or starchy or comfortingly carby and depending on a kid’s emotional issues and physiology or whatever other issues affect one’s propensity toward sugar addiction, that kid will have to walk a hard road until they’re finally sick and tired of being sick and tired. That is me at age 54.
Just know you did your best and that kid’s addiction or lack thereof is not necessarily all under your control.

I am a recovering sugar addict. I never had a problem with breads, chips, pasta etc, it was always the sweet stuff. I hid candy, cookies, cupcakes, stole candy from my kids at Halloween, I would go to a cupcake place and pay cash just in case my husband looked at our account online. I totally had the obsessive thoughts about sugar, thinking about getting my next fix. By the grace of God I never weighed 300lbs. I’ve gone cold turkey off of sweets a few times and every time I did, for the first couple days I would break out in a cold sweat a few times each day and would get dizzy, and I also had horrible headaches for about 4-5 days. I did keto for a few months but still struggled with my sugar addiction, it wasn’t until I went carnivore that my obsessive thoughts about sugar went away. I certainly don’t struggle with it now like I used to, however now, if I eat something sweet, even just a bite, my brain freaks out and wants to eat the whole container of whatever sweets I just ate. The struggle and the addiction to sugar is so real!!

Withdrawal symptoms start at 10:00. Dealing with a sugar addiction starts at 12:00.
Step 1: Know you have an addiction, know how much sugar and carbs foods have
Step 2: Stay full, ie satiated on protein and healthy fats. Eat a LCHF or keto or carnivore diet.
Step 3: Do things that stimulate dopamine production in your brain. Run, sex, walk, hug
Step 4: Clean out your kitchen. Get rid of all the sweets and high or processed carbs. Even milk.
Step 5: Admit you are a sugar addict to others. Get them to help, don't bring me pie, cake, etc.
Step 6: Make a plan to cut your sugar consumption. Do better today than you did yesterday.
Step 7: Get plenty of sun and sleep.
Step 8: Deal with other addictions too - smoking, alcohol, etc.

You can tell that you are addicted to sugar if your response to the idea of not eating carbs is "I can't give up ... x". When we are unable to consider the idea of giving up bread, pasta, and rice, that is an indication of an addiction. Most of my clients struggle with giving up bread, not ice cream. Interestingly, as adults, we often limit the fun carbs but give ourselves unlimited access to the grains and starchy vegetables. We have been taught that grains, vegetables, and fruit are healthy. To now learn that, not only are they unhealthy but also habit forming is extremely troubling. This idea contributes to the fact that it takes many people that need this information a long time to accept it. I'm happy Dr. Berry put out this video because it helps solidify the fact that our mental health and physical health come together to create our overall feeling of well being.

It may be an addiction if you say I can quit it any time I like, but I choose not to.
The addiction will give you all sorts of reasons to not stop it's use. The state of denial is large and powerful.
I quit alcohol in 1978, tobacco in 1988, sugar in 2018. I have no regrets about stopping any of it.

6 for 6. I was very aware that I was a sugar addict, but this was like whoa 🤯🤯🤯
I have successfully followed Keto since 7/1/2018 and lost 143.2 during this time. I have had some setbacks and probably got a years worth of sugar in carbs and refined sugars in each cheat day as I am also a compulsive binge eater. Interestingly this is how I knew I was a carb addict. One month or more into keto heavier on fat and meat than the veg, I am barely even hungry. The instant I eat bread, pasta, icecream, cake etc. I become a compulsive eating machine. Loved this video and I believe it is very helpful. Many people pooh-pooh me when I say it is a mental and physiological disorder. But I know the truth 😣

Getting over my sugar addiction was/is super hard. I would feel extremely hungry, shaky and desperate for food. Rather than give in to my sweet cravings, I would shove a slice of turkey and cheese into my mouth, or eat some steak, or eggs. I was having to eat sooooo often to keep the feeling of starvation down, and to keep myself from feeling like I was starving, but within a week or so, that starts to go away. Suddenly I'm able to fast for 20h a day and feel great, sleep like a baby, have a ton of energy, never think of sweets, or very rarely and not crave them, even thinking about them would make me feel sick. During the worst of it, I would definitely hide sweets, or eat them quickly before anyone else came home, or go to the drugstore for a few things I needed and come out with a pile of sweets I swear I don't even remember picking up. People laugh when I tell them I have a problem with it. They literally laugh in my face. Few people think this is an actual problem because it's "socially acceptable", unlike doing a big line of cocaine at work, or something. I struggle to keep it going for long periods of time, though. I will do well or a month or two and then I find myself making an excuse to eat it. Oh my coworkers baked something or oooh this thing I love is on sale for so cheap. I had a rough week and weekend and have spent the day back at square one feeling like crap, feeling starving, constantly shoving healthy snacks into my mouth to distract myself and kicking myself for ruining the excellent streak I was on. I think part of that comes from seeing the lbs melt away when I first stop and after a few weeks, or a month or so, it plateaus and my mind automatically thinks - Well if I'm eating healthy and exercising but no more weight is coming off, I may as well eat whatever I want. I need to work on that but since no one thinks it's a thing, it's very hard to find support when you're struggling. Drugs and alcohol, even shopping, no problem, there are a million rehab facilities and programs designed to help. Sugar - You're on your own

Your timing is perfect. Been on keto for just over a year and been doing IF OMAD/WARRIOR the whole time.. but.. for the last month I have fallen in to a sugar hole and every day I keep saying tomorrow no more sugar and yet I fond myself saying the same thing every day all the while LITERALLY stuffing myseof with sugar, chips ans bread..
I know why this happens I know how to prevent it and I KNOW how easy it is to stay off but once I'm in the sugar train it's like my body is saying not a single F is given just eat away.
Your video happened to come out on the first day of my return to keto and IF and it's just the kick in the nads I need to remind myself why I'm doing this. I lost 52lbs in one year I'm not about to go back!

My host was ridiculing me. His best friend was an MD so I asked him and he agreed, the bread is sugar. His friend was shocked. I asked, can a whole country have a personality based on what they eat? He said, of course. The french blood sugar crash (IMHO) gives rise to the french ...(arguments, polemics and disputes give adrenal energy because they are low after the hypoglycemic crash). I call it the " second french disease". It is romanticised because of croissants and the continental breakfast. They start the day with carbs and coffee...there is nothing romantic about a blood sugar crash.

Hi! My name is Janice and I am a sugar addict! I got control of it by cutting out large groups of no-no foods at a time. Like anything with white flour in it, was thrown out and not brought back into the house. I didn't know what I was doing. I just knew that the more I tried to lose weight, the more I gained. I knew white flour was bad. The thing was, I didn't substitute the thrown out stuff with a bread made out of something "healthier" than white flour. Doing that stopped the weight increase and I saw a little decrease in weight. It did take about a month to get a grip on not having white flour. Then I gave up my soda pop, Pepsi, Sprite, whatever you want to call it. It was always "diet" "zero calorie" but I knew I was addicted to it so out that went and I lost more weight. Then I tackled fruits and veggies, condiments. I got better educated by these videos and other information and ended up losing 100 pounds, 12 more to go. I also quit smoking 6 years ago. I know I get easily addicted to just about anything so I'm taking better care of myself.

    I am 100% an addict.
I used to pride myself on the fact that I have no addictions (smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc.)
That went out the window in the recent past when I recognized my inability to forgo the chips, pasta, and candy (and rice, and potatoes, and corn, and beans, and...).
Even now, being keto for months, I still cling to having 'keto breaks' scheduled out into the future to get past the weak moments.
Testing helps me. It takes DAYS to get back to the numbers I want after just one cheat. It's frustrating. So when I feel myself wanting to give in, I pull up that feeling of frustration as a deterrent.

@@joane8651 please STOP drinking ANY soda ! It's really killing you. I used to drink way too much diet Pepsi then realized this is killing me and I want to watch my daughter's grow old with me. You must stop spiking Insulin with ANY type of Sugar or carbohydrate. Taking magnesium and potassium supplements helped lessen some of my cravings. Check Dr. Eric Berg on RUclips. Go Keto and intermittent fasting !

Currently 3 months deep in keto lifestyle. Had suger over our last holiday break and has taken 2 weeks to kick the sugar. Now, I know I can't touch it. One bite leads to 50 bites. NOT WORTH IT! Live and learn...right?!

I'm definitely addicted to sugar. I've been trying to wean myself off but I'm a procrastinator. Cold turkey, with bacon, will be my best bet. I haven't been in ketosis yet, but I certainly feel better when I haven't had carbs in a day or two. I don't feel bloated and tired until I cave to the carbs. That, however, is what I use to avoid eating them. It's how I stopped drinkin a couple years ago. It's how I stopped smoking about 3 weeks ago. I understand that those things will make me feel like crap and I avoid them. Garbage in, garbage out. It bears repeating.
Thank you, Dr. Berry, for your dedication to truly helping the populace know the truth about food and how it all works.

The thing is from my experience when you tell people that, they somehow will sabotage your good intentions. So the best thing is slowly learning to say no more often. Practice makes perfect.

My friend told me about this video & I thought I was a sugar addict. I don’t like sweets, I like chips, my sandwiches are made with sourdough bread & protein, love all kinds of food, drink tea all day (my 1st cup with sea salt, apple cider vinegar & 1/2 squeezed lemon), but I answered NO to all of the questions pertaining to having a sugar addiction🤔.
I sleep well, outside most of the day. I’m 5’1”, about 83lbs, senior citizen. Haven’t seen a Dr. since my mid 20’s, except when I broke my collar bone in 2019. (Oh & in my 30’s for a work related injury, dog bite). I never filled my prescription medication, only took CBD oil, the Dr. & nurses took pics of my cbd oil for their family members to get them off of their prescription drugs.. I drink about 6 beers a night & smoke about a pack a day. I have your book & enjoy your videos ❤️. So am I a freak😬🤷‍♀️.

Completing a year of keto and cutting out the sugar was a big deal now on a carnivore lifestyle and continuing to fixing the years of damage that all the things in life that caused the damage and moving forward to feeling the best that I've ever felt in my life. These videos are priceless to help everyone get a real understanding of what is really going on inside things you can't physicaly see with your eyes.

I did carnivor for 3 weeks to support a loved one. I am 1 year postpartum and have been horribly depressed since giving birth.
    The depression cleared.
Then I had a cake today and it all came back within the hour.
I wish someone had told me this sooner. I might have been a better mom.

"It may not be your fault, but it IS your problem"~ seriously strong statement. Also, a statement that helps folks narrow it down to personal responsibility- which is always a good thing, because it also gives back control, & who doesn't want to be in control? =) We realize it's for each of us to tackle our problems, w/ proper supports & tools, & we then get to enjoy the 'rewards' that come with having overcome said problem. It's awesome.
*Also, super important to remind people that "ALL CARBS end up as sugar forms". Really appreciate this being emphasized.

Heres some sticker shock for ya:
I didnt believe I was a sugar addict until last night when I went to make a giant salad.
There was fructose (and soy oil) in the pickle relish, canned tomatos, yogurt dressing, and even the balsamic vinegar! All these years, I casually assumed that sugar was NOT my problem. It was a REVELATION.

Hello Dr Berry. Six out of six. Please pray for me. Tip #3 should be #2. Instead of telling your loved ones that you are "trying|" to give up sugar it would be more positive to tell them that you no longer eat foods containing sugar anymore.

Dr. Berry, would you please do *a video about keto diet and parkinson's disease* ? I hear it is very useful indeed, and I was hoping to have your point of view on that!

Thanks doctor Berry for sharing this vital message about sugar addiction! I've been in remission with alcohol for the past 32 years. Now I'm battling a serious sugar addiction! I wake up during the wee hours of the night with craving so bad I have to get out of bed and find sugar in any source! I've recently been diagnosed with fatty liver disease and I want to get off the sugar in all forms including carbs. My doctor doesn't have a clue how to help me so I can help myself!!! I just watch your video TWICE and took notes! I'm going to follow your advice starting this very second! Thank you for sharing how to begin this new journey!!! I'm headed to my kitchen to start the disposal process!

The hard part is changing your thinking from carbs are required in every meal to carbs are a once in a while occurrence. It’s also hard to understand that sugar addiction is real because no one believes you, everyone eats sugar it’s part of the culture and even medical practice. I’m currently weaning down from carbs in every meal to lower carbs and it is tough. But I’m gonna keep going because I am so sick and tired of being overweight and constantly feeling awful. I’ve tried a few times before and failed over and over again. But when I’m eating sugar I feel insane. Up and down and sugar high and sugar crash every damn day. Honestly, I don’t know how people just live on the sugar rollercoaster like it’s normal. It’s crazy, we are not supposed to feel like that. Glad I’ve found this channel! Thank you!🙏🏼
