Gimme Chocolate was released in 2013, when the lead singer was 16, and the other two were two years younger. They'd been making music for several years beforehand, though. If you listen to their more recent songs, you can see just how far Su-metal has come in the past decade. She's a fantastic vocalist and even collaborated with Bring Me The Horizon.

Just so you know, this is OLD Babymetal. When they were kids. They started when they were 12 and 11. So by this performance they had already been around for 4 years. Here they were 15 and 14.
Old or early Babymetal (first album) was very cutesy and tongue-in-cheek. The second album Metal Resistance tended to stray away from this a bit but still has elements of cute in it. One member left in 2018 and then they came out with a third album Metal GALAXY that was much more mature and experimental. They experimented with music from around the world and with collaborations with other artists like Sabaton, Polyphia, Arch Enemy, among others. They touched on everything from Latin, Indian, and pirate shanties, to highly technical masterpieces like the prog heavy Tales of the Destinies, and Power Metal classic Road of Resistance and Amore. Touching on rap with Papaya and BxMxC. Their latest album has gotten rid of the kawaii altogether and has become this progressive heavy mixture of club pop and industrial prog metal that sounds NOTHING like what they sounded like in the beginning.
Although their lyrics started off as cutesy and silly young girl topics, they have matured into uplifting and encouraging music. Babymetal is fun, uplifting, positive message music.
If you continue this journey into the foxhole, you will be amazed, intrigued, delighted, and shocked. And hopefully addicted. Enough to become an official BABYMETAL fan. Su-metal calls us The One.
Did they come up with this? No. This was the brainchild of Key Kobayashi,a producer for the Amuse talent agency. Most of the music and lyrics are his and a team of ghost writers with cryptic "metal" names. The girls didn't even know what metal was when they were recruited for this project. They were originally in a J-Pop idol group called Sakura Gakuin(look them up), where BABYMETAL originated from as a sub group. So no, they had no idea what metal was. And no, they are no longer this cutesy. They don't scream or growl. Ever. The point being that it's J-Pop vocals over heavy music. But they do get heavier and they do get much MUCH more mature.
I've been to 20 of their concerts. From small intimate 500 cap venues to 50,000 x2 (2 back to back concerts) at Tokyo Dome. Their arena shows are second to non. Have fun on this journey.❤

Once you understand that BABYMETAL originally wanted to make metal music that young girls could relate to (Su-metal states this in an old interview), it makes sense that older songs like Gimme Chocolate, Doki Doki Morning, Uki Uki Midnight, etc were extra kawaii/cute since the Su, Moa, and Yui were in their early teens. But as they got older, as well as their fanbase, their songs also matured a bit too. 🤘🦊🤘

Gimme Chocolate is actually a defiance song. They are basically saying: "I wanna eat chocolate, but I'll gain weight and for society that's a no no. So now, Gimme my chocolate"
They have many songs like this. Like Ijime, Dame , Zettai. The title translates to "Bullying, No, Never" and it talks about how bullying hurts everyone involved so it shouldn't be done.
Song 4 is about how in Japan they believe that the number 4 is cursed (4 has 2 reading in Japanese, "Yon" and "Shi", and death is also read as "shi", so people started relating both of them to the point that some buildings don't even have the 4th floor) and in the song they say: "hey, guys. It's just a number. We also have other words that are pronounced "shi" so calm down"
In Sis. Anger they basically say: "Stop making excuses for being lame. Accept yourself or get better"
And in Megitsune they try to break the stigma that women are foxes (that women try to deceive men. It's a belief heavily linked to their mythology) and they say: "Hey, we're just women trying to get by. We are not foxes, we are actresses"

That's wild, that's almost the exact opposite of what I read. I had read that Gimme Chocolate is part of a story cycle and in this part of the story in which a demon is trying various methods of tempting the protagonist. It's difficult to be sure because just from the lyrics all you really get is an internal monologue about wanting the chocolate.
Your interpretation seems less farfetched for sure!

What I appreciate about BABYMETAL is the fact their voices cut through the hard metal. This allows the band to go hard and not over power the vocals. The metal stays hard and the vocals stay very j-pop. Then they can change the style of metal. You can not put BABYMETAL in a box. Each of their songs are unique.

At the time of this performance, Su-Metal had just turned 16, and Moa and Yui were still 14 (the entry you read from was from a couple years later). Yui left in 2018, and Su and Moa continued on as a duo. Su turned 25 this past December, and Moa will turn 24 on July 4th! BABYMETAL will be performing at Aftershock in California later this year. I was fortunate enough to see them live in Chicago back in 2016 when Yui was still there. Their birthdates: Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal) December 16, 1997; Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) July 4, 1999; and though no longer with the group, Yui Mizuno (Yui-metal) June 20, 1999.

Road of Resistance live in Japan (ruclips.net/video/zTEYUFgLveY/видео.html) is the one which converted me (old school metalhead) from, 'yeah, this is kinda interesting' to, 'okay, that was fantastic also I HAVE to go to one of their live shows because their crowd interaction / control is second to none I've seen (I'd say on par or possibly even better than Rammstein)' - so I now have tickets for their next tour.
With Headbanger Live @ Legend 1997 Apocalypse (ruclips.net/video/YjjWZpf_jSs/видео.html) being a close second (there's a teeny weeny bit of screaming in this one)
In terms of authenticity, Rob Halford, Rob Zombie and the Chilli Peppers are fans, and they opened for Metallica because as Lars said, "We saw them in 2013 at a festival, and we were astounded by their awesomeness."
I've seen footage of them covering a couple of Judas Priest songs when they were opening for the Chilli Peppers, so I gather that when things very first started a little over 10 years ago they were a 'manufactured band', but since then they've increasingly taken ownership of the whole thing and are determining the band's direction, writing lyrics, etc.

They DID start out young with SuMetal at 12, MoaMetal and YuiMetal at 10yo, in their early pre-teen years. they had been performing for many years prior to this as Sakura Gakuin. The Gimme Chocolate video you're watching is the first live performance of the song from about 10 years ago in 2013, as now each of the girls are well into their 20s in 2023.

"Gimme Chocolate" is "just" a fun song about the girls wanting to eat chocolate but being a little worried about gaining some weight (as you read on the translation) and yeah, it's also freaking metal as hell. And that's the point of the song and why it went viral in 2014.
The girls were 16 and 14 when the visuals of this MV were recorded at the concert Legend 1997 in 2013 the day after Su-metal's (the lead singer) 16th birthday.
They started in 2010 when they were 12 and 11. And, given the fact they are 25 and 23 now, and they are still active (after several sad and even tragical moments) I'd say they were not "forced" by the record label. Instead of that, they have had a very interesting career, very different from what they ever imagined. And they are still young.
Well, at this point you need to check out that "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!" (with five exclamation marks hehe...) live from the same concert (Legend 1997).

They started their band at the age of 12 but su-metal was 14, they do have heavier songs like kingslayer, sis. Anger, metali, their first song was 'doki doki morning' they have made a weird full of mixed up genres in one of their songs called 'line!' as you can tell i am a HUGE fan of their band so ask me anything if you have anymore questions.

    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 🍫 💝
This footage is from the 'Legend 1997' concert, held in December 2013, celebrating the 16th birthday of the lead singer, Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto, or Su).
    "1997" is her birth year.
The two younger girls, Yuimetal (Yui Mizuyno) and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) were both 14.
The BABYMETAL members are very aware that their initial impression is often "What the Hell?".
They compare that to what they thought when they were first introduced to metal music.
This whole concept of combining JPop/Idol music with Metal could have been a disaster, but the quality of the singing, songwriting, choreography and staging take it to another level.
'Gimme Chocolate!!' is definitely one of their "poppier" tracks.
They have been joined on stage for this song by members of Korn, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and DragonForce.
Not all at the same time though. : )
Pretty much every song is different.
They believe that if any song sounds too much like it's from a single genre, then it's not a BABYMETAL song.
I hope you keep going. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Their range is nothing short of amazing.

Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊You have loads of info and too many comments to read already, so maybe I'll leave adding to that for another time.
To answer one of your questions, BABYMETAL were doing this before Poppy changed her style (I think something she said at some point even suggested she was inspired to change by what BABYMETAL were doing).
Next song - definitely "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!" but not the MV, BABYMETAL have to be seen and heard live. There is a great version from Legend 1997 - same concert in December 2013 as the 'Gimme Chocolate' video was filmed (lead singer's 16th birthday party, the two younger girls were 14), but later in the show so the Kami Band are playing live - the guys in skeleton suits were not. Long story boils down to BABYMETAL not having the money for a live band until they split from their parent group, Legend 1997 was the last step of that split.

Welcome to the world of BABYMETAL! You're correct that kawaii means cute so there isn't any screaming (at least not yet). They really did create a new genre of cute metal and as far as I can tell are still the only ones. Yuimetal left the band a few years ago for health reasons (unspecified). The band took an extended break during the COVID pandemic but recently released a new album and started a new tour. As I understand it they were assigned to the Heavy Music Club (a sub-group of Sakura Gakuin, a Japanese idol group) in 2010 at 13 (Sumetal, vocal and dance) and 11 (Yuimetal and Moametal, scream and dance). This video was made a little later so they are probably 12 and 14 here. In this video they are still preforming to a recorded track (vocals and music) as evidenced by the bands skeleton costumes. Later shows where the band wears white robes and make-up are true live performances. For further listening I recommend Road of Resistance, Ijime Dame Zettai, Megitsune, Catch Me If You Can, Headbanger!, Awadama Fever and Doki Doki Morning (Heart Pounding Morning and btw a great wake-up jam) should get you up to speed. To see Yuimetal and Moametal without Sumetal (refered to as BLACK BABYMETAL) there is Onedari Daisakusen. If you're interested in more all-girl J-Rock bands (and there are really hundreds of them) you might try a BAND-MAID (the costumes are their gimmick) song called Real Existence (as a starting place) or Scandal (search for Scandal Japanese band or you'll get the American band with Patty Smyth). A couple of their more hard rocking songs are A.M.D.K.J. and Masterpiece. Some of Scandals music is more popish (to sell records) but when they rock they really rock and they seem to rock more since starting their own record label named HER Records.

Don't be fooled by this song, they got a lot of great songs showing the lead singer vocal skills and with more meaningful lyrics than this one that is just to have fun.
They started in 2010 when having only 11 and 12 yo and now they got 23 and 25, more than a decade and giving half of their life to this project, they already released a new album (4th chronologically) with a more mature sound and new BM side we've never seen before, a little bit away from the kawaii elements from early era, so don't worry to keep travelling this songs until you reach the new sound.
    See you next time 🦊🤘🍫

I've been listening to them for about a year now off the strength of the defense Rob Zombie gave them about their concerts and how they rocked harder than most of the metal bands he has ever toured with. Gimme Chocolate was one of their very first singles, and when they started Suzuka Nakamoto, their lead singer, was 14 and the two backups were 12. Now, Nakamoto is 24 and has over 10 years of experience with Babymetal and she's totally legit.
This was uploaded 5 days ago at the time of my writing this post, I would hope by now you've listened to Pa Pa Ya. I'm pretty open minded about what I'm willing to listen to when it comes to various music genres, but I tend to stay in either hard rock or metal most of the time (then classical/orchestral). This band does stuff that to me at least on paper is terrible. I can't stand listening to autotune, I'm not a big fan of rap, and the mere thought of listening to a metal band fronted by 3 little girls just sounds bad. But man, I love Babymetal, and two of my favorite songs are Pa Pa Ya, and BxMxC, and you simply could not ever sell me on those songs simply by describing them to me.

They are fantastic! Just as an FYI for anyone that reads this and doesn't already know, the "backups" are just as important to the group as Suzuka as they carry a lot of the audience interaction and physical performance. Their names are Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi. Both are strong vocalists (even if they don't get to show this off much as a part of Babymetal) and extremely talented performers.
Yui Mizuno left Babymetal in 2018 due to undisclosed health reasons, and Babymetal continued to tour as a duo with various dancers filling in her spot on stage pre-covid. As of last week, one of the replacement dancers, Momoko Okazaki was chosen to join Babymetal permanently, and is the official third member. Thus Babymetal are a trio again!

I fully recommend the following:
1 Megistune - official video (this is pretty much the anthem of Babymetal and is played at nearly every concert)
    2 Karate - official video
3 Ijeme Dame Zettai - live at sonisphere

Poopy is an experimental queen and took it up another level to where the juxtaposition is harder than Babymetals. BM stays within metal the entire time and Poppy literally takes it away completely at times (atleast on her first tracks) now she's full punk/rock/metal. She's just doing whatever she wants.
But yes, Babymetal has been an inspiration for many many bands and we love them for that.

Also I just want to point something out, they were 14 years old and 16 years old when they wrote this, also they’re first overseas concert was in the UK in 2014 and at that concert there were 55 thousand or more people that were there to see bands like ghost, anthrax, Metallica, and much more that didn’t know who they were and had never heard of them. But they were originally supposed to play at the small stage but 5 thousand people showed up to see them and so they were moved to the big stage, as the opening act, keep in mind they had no idea they were about to sing in front of 55 thousand hardcore metal fans, and when they got out there they were clearly very nervous, but as they started playing a lot of the fans started cheering for them and they gained a lot of fans. By the time they ended people were chanting that they wanted more! But that’s essentially how they got started with touring world wide. Honestly their story is really quite fascinating and not at all what you’d expect but it’s also a bit of a perfect storm at the same time.

That is the only way to keep the genre alive is to see what the younger people are doing instead of putting up road blocks because it's not what you grew up with. Rock has gone the way of jazz it's a music from time that people still enjoy but it's a specialty channel on the radio. You have a better chance to find a R&B, Church music, Country western or Latino station before finding a pure rock station now.

When the group started, the girls were 14, 12, and 12. This song came out a few months later, so I'm not sure, they might be a little older here. If you want to see them at their youngest, watch the original music video(s) for either or both of their first two songs, Dokidoki Morning, and いいね. The latter is still my personal favorite of all their work to this day, although some of their more recent work is also really good (e.g., Road to Resistance, for which there's a really good live recording that will give you an idea how much fun their concerts can be, or BxMxC).
They do scream sometimes. There's a scream in いいね for example. But it's not the only thing that they do, not by a wide margin. One of the things I really like about them is that their music isn't monotonous to listen to. They're constantly changing it up, keeping it interesting.
Other really interesting metal bands include Bloodywood (Indian folk metal; it works a lot better than it sounds like it should) and Haggard (Renaissance metal; yes really; and if that sounds badass, it's because it is).

If you want to hear a little bit earlier their song Iine! is an excellent example of what you thought about what Babymetal would be. My favorite description of Babymetal is something I saw another person say which was, “Babymetal is what happens when you try to summon a metal band and when making the pentagram you run out of salt and substitute with sugar to complete it!” My other favorite saying about the girls is they’re what happens when you go to practice with your garage band and your mom makes you take your little sisters and they get discovered over you!

Thank you for giving BABYMETAL a chance!!! BABYMETAL started back in 2010 and since then have performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. Plus the 20+ awards they have been given. They have 50+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too.🤘🦊🤘

I always thought that Babymetal were a gimmick but when they released Metal Kingdom I thought I’d check them out and soon found out that they’re not, now I’ve fallen into the rabbit hole and absolutely love them. I mean it shouldn’t work putting three girls who sing what are basically pop songs together with a super talented heavy band but it does, boy does it work. The girls, now just Su and Moa, are so talented not just at singing but also the dance routines are just amazing(especially in Karate) and that is something I’d never thought I’d like, dance routines with my metal but I just do. They are huge in Japan and their concerts are astounding with a level of crowd participation that I have never seen before, just watch the video for the song that you mentioned Head Bangeeeeerrrr!!!!! and you’ll see what I mean.
Regarding heavier songs, well aside from Gimme Chocolate which of course you’ve heard there’s Megitsune which is one of my favourites, Divine Attack - Shingeki, PA PA YA!!(which is catchy as hell), Road of Resistance and Kingslayer(the song that they did with Bring Me The Horizon).
I’ve been listening to metal and hard rock for over thirty years and I never thought I’d lose my heart and soul to three girls(now two)who sing pop songs backed by a metal band but I have and it’s awesome.

At this videofrom 2013 the 2 dancers/screamers Yui and Moa were 13/14 yo The singer Su was 15yo. They say they don´t make Heavy Metal but Kawaii Metal. Kawaii is refering to their cuteness but also mixing different pop with different metal genres. The original idea came from their producer when they were 11/12 yo and part of the J-Pop Idol group Sakura Gakuin. You will never hear then groal. They have many different stuff. Some heavy, some more pop. some mixes of both ... Close to every song is different since they continuesly switching genres. Watch for live performances. Studio versions is not their thing. But their live concerts, especially the big ones from Japan play in a completely different league compared to most other bands on this planet.

Every song babymetal does is different, but heres a short list.
    1. Megitsune music video is a must, probably their best song all time, heavy, edm, and other suprises (everything else watch live, unless its Kingslayer or karate)
    2. Headbanger 1997 live (similar to gimme chocolate in a way, heavy and cute)
    3. Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God intro Budokan live (personal favorite, highlights the kami bamd behind the girls better then any other song imo, heavy ballad song).
    4. Pa Pa Ya live
    5. Road of Resistance live in Japan (probably their most iconic live show)
    6. BxMxC live (this is different)
    7. Monochrome official (Not the First Take version )
    8. Mirror mirror live
    9. Maya live
    10. Akatsuki live
    11. Catch me if you can live
    12. BMTH - Kingslayer ft. BabyMetal (probably my most replayed song with babymetal).
    And many more

Don't want "mature and complex" from this group. The product they were selling when they formed was all about cute girls singing and dancing cute in front of hardcore metal band. They were better off staying that way. If I wanted "mature and complex" in a band I would be a fan of a band that was "mature and complex" from Day 1.
