The writer of this song (Trent Reznor) said after hearing Johnny’s version that it was Johnny’s song now.
It was his last song. His daughter told him it sounded like he was saying goodbye & he told her he was.
His wife died a few months after this was released & he died shortly afterwards. Great man in black.
“A Boy Named Sue” is a famous song by him, among many.

Here you are, almost twenty years after he recorded this song and passed away discovering it for the first time, being moved by it. Is there any greater legacy than that? I like it when reactors follow up this reaction to "Hurt" by Johnny Cash with the original by Nine Inch Nails. They're not the same song at all. Obviously not musically, but not lyrically either, even though they're both singing the same lyrics (mostly... Johnny changed a few.) Trent is describing his fall into heroin addiction and self-harm. Johnny is describing the end of a man's life. They are both awesome in their own ways and I love them both.

I feel like Cash's version of the song stands alone better than Reznor's. That two-minute sustain at the end is such a chilling closing to the Downward Spiral, but the song loses a prominant layer without the context of the story and soundscape of the album, whereas Cash's voice gives all the context you could need to his performance.

@@michaellaporte4951 well he changed the words "crown of shit" to "crown of thorns", which made it much more fitting of cash..
but lets not forget that cash also covered bonnie prince billy (will oldham) with the song "i see a darkness".. and the cover actually features will oldham singing backing vocals on that song.. so pretty much will and trent gave their songs to him as if they felt he deserved them more than they did..

    • @zannemarie6591

I agree. Knowing his backstory makes the images in this video so powerful. Him revisiting the shack where he grew up and picked cotton as a sharecropper and the flood that came through and almost killed them all. those are things that if you don't know his backstory don't have the same punch. Or the broken record and knowing that he punched that record in the midst of his addiction and blew his marriage and family apart during that time. Worthwhile to know his backstory and watch the video again to make sense of it and why he calls all he has achieved as an empire of dirt. This is Reznor's song but Cash's version takes it to another level because Reznor had time to turn it around where Cash is at the end regretting things he did because they wasted so much time and now everyone is gone and he is stuck with his empire of dirt (his own grave). Powerful. Cash always spoke the truth. If you ever want to know the heart of Cash, listen to The Man in Black and God's Gonna Cut You Down. That explains him.

@@RobSquadReactions You're absolutely right. There's something empty inside of you if you don't feel something listening to this song. This is a cover of a Trent Reznor song from his hand Nine Inch Nails. After he heard Johnny's version he said the song wasn't his anymore and that it was Johnny's. In an interview eith his daughter, she'd said that she'd told him...you know, this sounds like you're saying goodbye to us and he said I am. He was very ill as was his wife in this video. She's the woman you see smiling at him. She's also a singer and guitarist and songwriter. They used to perform seperately early in during their careers and then together. Her band is June Carter Cash. He credits her with helping getting him off of alcohol and prescription drugs. They've been married a VERY long time, I THINK it was almost 60 yrs by the time this video cane out. You're right that part of the song speaks about past mistakes and regrets. Trent Reznor also had struggled with drug addiction during his life. Johnny Cash had been in jail and prison also and he did a performance at the Fulsom prison which you should check out. He said it WAS kind of a tight squeeze getting outta there cuz he was warned of HOW This performance was supposed to go but Johnny being Johnny did things his own way. So he'd pulled some shit on stage the warden didn't like before they could get him pulled off. I'm an older biker lady and probably one of the oldest ppl here cuz I'm in my MID 50s. So far I haven't seen any other ppl commenting who are are my age saying they remember when the stuff you've posted came out too much. I'm hoping they show up soon cuz I'm bre here and I dig your channel so far and I don't wanna be the ONLY old broad!.😂 Now... June died soon after this video came out. Johnny followed her within a years timeframe. Once I'd heard that she had passed, a lot of their long time fans just knew that he wasn't going to be with us much longer. That IS the way it goes with couples that have been married for a long time. Even if the spouse doesn't have medical issues they are soon to follow. IT IS the truth that people die of a broken heart after being together with someone for decades. If you want to learn about his/their life story check out the movie Walk The Line. Walk The Line is one of the titles to Johnny's songs btw. I will tell you this, the music world lost a lot when they left us because it left a big hole behind. They both were legends of country music and had multiple gold records and awards. Check out their story and you'll be like wow because they both came from really humble and dirt poor beginnings and rose to extreme stardom. They were raised during the Big Depression and it wasn't an easy road. I think you'll enjoy what you see in the movie. Rest in peace Johnny and June.

Johnny Cash is legendary. How he could speak directly to the core of your emotions is what makes these superstars stand out. I love this song. Since Johnny reminds me of my father and watching him lose his brothers and going through his own trial makes this so relatable.

She is a legend in her own right, he was never the kind of man to disown his own choices, so to hear him question them at any point let alone at that age, was a spear thru the soul. *I was fortunate enough to meet Johnny Cash several times over my years in the music business. Initially he struck me as a real **_'hard man',_** and, a real hard man to like. He didn't put up with any crap from anyone. And if you got on the wrong side of him, God help you!*
*But that was in the early 1970s. Over the years we became... I won't say 'best friends', but certainly 'good friends' as he and I mellowed over time. We shared the fact that we were both insulin-dependent diabetics, having to stick a needle in ourselves twice a day, which although he didn't write it, makes the lyrics to this song all the more poignant to me, and I know to Johnny's family too.*
*The last time we met was in May of 2003, when I made the trip over for the very sad death of his wife June who I'd also got to know. By that time I was genuinely shocked and very upset to see how Johnny's health had deteriorated so much since my previous visit just three years earlier. His son told me this had largely been due to something called **_"Shy-Drager syndrome"._** His mind was still sharp though, and he immediately recognised me in a way I'll never forget... **_"Well if it ain't my TT racing buddy from the Isle of Man. Come here and sit a while you old bastard!"_** We laughed AND cried together, chatting about all kinds of things (which I won't go into here in case my grandchildren - or his ever read this!) He was a good man as far as I'm concerned. An honest and true gentleman in all the years that I knew him. And after a few 'false starts' some 50 years ago now, more than anything, he was a good friend. God bless you JRC, I'll be seeing you soon x.*

I have been aware of Johnny Cash, and his wife, June Carter Cash, since I was seriously old enough to be aware of ANYTHING, and now I'm a great-grandma. I agree, this was his sad goodbye song, but he was literally grieving to death for his wife whom he'd lost just a few month before he died. His music catalog is huge and he's certainly a legend. He spent a good bit of time, early on, in prison but NEVER forgot the guys there or other prisoners after he reformed, was saved and became rich!
