    • @joelofaro5719
      @joelofaro5719 3 года назад +5

      "Smells Like Teen Spirit" didn't create the genre, but it did bring it to the attention of the wider world. Before the term "Grunge" became the agreed upon title of the genre, there was a music writer/critic, named Chuck Eddy, who was calling it "Bigfoot Rock," due to the fact that the bands creating this sound, were mainly from the Pacific Northwest of the United States, where many so-called "Bigfoot sightings" had occured. That was in 1986 or '87. The first time the word "Grunge" was used to describe a band's music, was in 1972, by the famous music writer/critic, Lester Bangs, who was writing about an album by the band "White Witch," for "Creem" magazine. He also used the term "Punk Rock," in that same article!
      But, it was probably, Mark Arm (from: Mr. Epp and the Calculations, Green River, The Thrown Ups, The Limp Richerds, Mudhoney and Monkeywrench), who put the word into the heads of people in Seattle, back in 1982.

    Made me feel a little old there, I was an 80s baby and the grunge era was what helped me through my depressed teenage years. It's amazing to think that a genre of music that seems mostly about depressing topics helped me through some really bad depression, especially considering how many grunge artists ended up. Also I had so many plaid shirts and ripped jeans, I was so sad when my favorite plaid shirt finally fell apart (so soft and comfy).
    I remember being blown away by Nirvana when they were on MTV unplugged with their covers of "Where did you sleep last night" and "The man who sold the world" (though David Bowie's original is still my favorite version). There are so many great grunge bands out there. I would recommend Pearl Jam (Jeremy or Alive), Stone Temple Pilots (Vasoline or Plush or Interstate love song), Temple of the Dog (Hunger Strike), Soundgarden (Blackhole Sun), Bush (Machinehead), Mad Season (River of deceit), Screaming Trees (Nearly lost you), and of course Alice in Chains (Love hate love or Nutshell).

    You mentioned about how that man was playing his guitar, and it reminded me of an interview i read with the 70's Canadian band GUESS WHO. They commented their song American Woman was written on the fly in the middle of a concert. The guitarist broke a string and was replacing it. Noticing the dead air he started playing before that was tuned and told the singer to sing something, so he started making up lyrics and the song was played with one string out of tune.

    This song & album changed music... yes, in the 90's!! This was the first CD I ever bought. Listened to Nevermind over and over and over. This is one I'm sure your girl has heard before. This song was so freaking huge when it came out. It was everywhere. RIP Curt. Check out "Where did you sleep last night" from MTV Unplugged. It'll literally blow your mind. Your girl probably hasn't heard that one. It's a cover. The drummer, Dave Grohl, is the lead singer & guitarist of Foo Fighters. I was able to see them live in concert before Covid struck... and he is also a great live performer. Been loving these guys for a long time & still listen to them all the time.

While it was sad to lose one great band, after his passing the drummer, Dave Grohl, would take the front man role of another great band of the day, Foo Fighters.

    To most, this is the moment that the 90's started. There were a few other bands that had made a minor stamp in the "alternative" movement, but when this song and the Temple of the dog songs hit the MTV airwaves, Grunge had hit. The SEATTLE SOUND as it was known. Throughout rocks history, it spawns genres and pockets of genius. Whether the muscle shoals area around Tupelo MS and AL, or Memphis, Detroit, LA, NY, Atlanta, Philly, or even the Texas blues, the Seattle sound was a music onto itself that spurred thousands of bands all over the world to let loose.
