    When Trent Reznor wrote this song, he was singing it from a different place. It was dark and brooding.
    And then comes JR Cash. Similar reasons, but it was as though he was singing his eulogy. He knew his time was short, and this was the song to be remembered for all time.
    The end of this video always hits me pretty hard. When he closes the lid on the piano and wipes it down, it's as if to say "Goodbye". There will never be another Johnny Cash.
    The love and hurt that June Carter had in her eyes is a love we all want. She tragically passed shortly after the video was made, and he passed not too much later.
    "When Reznor was asked if Cash could record a rendition of the NIN song, the rock front-man noted he was flattered but wondered if the song might come across as too “gimmicky.” But the music video and Cash’s recording assuaged his worries.
    Said Reznor, “I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit as pure.”

    This was Johnny Cash's goodbye to his fans. Not long after this video June passed away and Johnny followed a few months later.
    But his daughter reportedly commented on how it seemed like he was saying goodbye and he said "I was."

      When a swan lays dying, according to legend, it will sing a song. And it will be the safest, most beautiful song you have ever heard.
      And that is what Johnny Cash has given us here. A swansong.

    This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

      A lot of people assume that the original references to addiction don't apply to Johnny. The fact is that he wrestled with addiction throughout much of his life. He had a lot of tragedy and loss in his life. He knew pain and had many regrets. At his core he was a good person, but a good person with many human frailties.

    You probably know this about Johnny Cash. His older brother who was going to become a preacher was killed in a saw accident. Johnny was supposed to be there but he was gone at the time. His father blamed Johnny. He held it over his head all his life. I think that is what lead to his drug use. Johnny did kick the habit with the help of Jesus and his wife June. They would sing at Billy Graham crusades. GREAT REACTION!

    'Hurt' was a song written by Trent Reznor for his band Nine Inch Nails back in 1994... it was about Reznor's struggle w/ addiction and the habit of numbing himself out. Johnny Cash had also struggled w/ drugs and alcohol early in his career and he related to the song's lyrics personally and decided to cover it for his 2002 album 'The man comes around'.
    The music video in early 2003 was the last thing he filmed... knowing he was dying after years of health issues (Johnny Cash was unable to tour since 1989) and kept busy putting out new records from 1994 until his death in 2003... He gave a glimpse of his past and showed what truly happens to 'legends' once they disappear from public view... The museum to his career abandoned... many of his friends and peers are gone... His successes all in the past...
    His wife June Carter also appeared in the video... Sadly, June Carter passed away in '03 from her health issues... Johnny Cash died 3 months later... 'Hurt' became a huge part of his legacy of music and even Trent Reznor said that Johnny Cash had made the song his own.

    That woman was June Carter Cash, his second wife. She sang "Jackson" with him in one of your earlier videos. She was part of the Carter Family. They were country music royalty long before Johnny Cash came on the scene. She started singing and performing as a young child. When she and Johnny got together, he was still deep in his addiction to drugs and alcohol. They went through a lot together. She died just a few months after this video was made, and he followed her a few months after that. The woman in the framed picture on the wall was his mother.

    Trent Reznor was 34 when he wrote Hurt, JC was 71 when he made the video. As many have observed the lyrics take on a completely different meaning when sung by a young man spiraling down into depression and a 71 YO music super star's regrets as he faces the end of his life. Reznor used heroin recreationally when he wrote Hurt but did not become an addict until some time afterwards. JC struggled with prescription medication addiction through most of his adult life, relapsing many times. Toward the end of his life he was so afraid of relapsing that he eschewed pain medication even while in extreme pain.

As a young teen "A Boy Named Sue" had crossed from country to popular everywhere. I was shocked at how much I loved his voice. My Dad died at about the same age as Cash. When I first saw this I cried for hours. A voice that transcends genre is one that will be remembered long after the artist is gone and will have the same emotional impact as it did when released. For a kid who was crazy about rock 'n roll this was an eye opening experience and literally opened my mind to all music

    RIP June and John R. Cash was an American country singer-songwriter. Most of Cash's music contains themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, especially songs from the later stages of his career. As his career was taking off in the late 1950s, Cash started drinking heavily and became addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates. For a brief time, he shared an apartment in Nashville with Waylon Jennings, who was deeply addicted to amphetamines. Cash would use the stimulants to stay awake during tours. Cash's journey included rediscovery of his Christian faith. He took an "altar call" in Evangel Temple, a small church in the Nashville area, pastored by Reverend Jimmie Rodgers Snow, son of country music legend Hank Snow.
    Walk the Line: The rise of country music legend Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) begins with his days as a boy growing up on the family farm, where he struggles under the scorn of his father (Robert Patrick). As the years pass, Cash ends up in Memphis, Tenn., with his wife, Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin), and breaks into the music scene after finding his trademark sound. While on tour, Cash meets the love of his life, singer June Carter (Reese Witherspoon), but Cash's volatile lifestyle threatens to keep them apart. Peace out.

    This song was written specifically for Johnny and the life he lived... Amazing part is... Writer Trent Reznor thought it was autobiographical for his own life... He was correct, but he didn't realize how his lyrics related to the man in black just as profoundly... I do love the Nine Inch Nails version, it is still in my play list, but it is Johnny who really made it a hit for me... Perfect swan song for such a legend... Even Reznor was blown away by this version...

    • @minilea144
      @minilea144 5 месяцев назад +1

      I mean, it wasnt specifically FOR Johnny. Trent didnt write it for anyone but himself. He didnt even want Johnny to remake it. But he heard it and felt it was no longer his song anymore.

    • @js3599
      @js3599 5 месяцев назад

      @@minilea144 I know that... My point was how two different stories, with Pretty much, the same words (With Just a Few Alterations) can change the whole complexion of the song... When I said "Reznor THOUGHT it was autobiographical" I meant he did NOT have Johnny in mind, just as you said, but it STILL told Johnny's story, intentional or not... He probably didn't even know Johnny's story... Still Trent's story too...
      That is the magic of a great song... It's the interpretations of the listener... Same words, different stories...

    • @minilea144
      @minilea144 5 месяцев назад

      @@js3599 I get it NOW. But the initial and overall seemed like you meant it was for Johnny from jump.
      But it's the case for any song or any story. It can be applied to anyone.
      This is one of the rare few times I like a remake as equally as I like the original.

    Mr. Cash is correct we all "Go away in the end" from dust we came and to dust we will return. Johnny realized that as his life grew closer to the end. We came into this World with nothing and we will take nothing with us when we our time comes. That's why he said in the song "You can have it all my Empire of dirt" Johnny made peace with God and His only Son Jesus towards the end of his days. I pray and hope you do as well, life is fleeting, however eternity is real choose wisely. ✝️

    Many of the clips were of him in his movies, as well as those with his wife. This was his last song & even though it is originally a 'Nine Inch nails' song, the lead singer for that group said it's Johnny's song now. Johnny was always known as the man in black & there is a performance of that song that is amazing to hear. He was touring a college & after speaking with the students, he went home & wrote 'Man in black' to answer the kid's questions about why he wears it & sang it less than a week after seeing them. That was his first performance of it & it makes it more special & it is a powerful song. It was during the Vietnam war when our soldiers were dying or getting spit on when they got back. (Including my brother who did 3 tours). Johnny had his trouble with alcohol & drugs & he did not 'serve' time, but he did spend many nights in jail in his younger years. He changed when he met June Carter & they have a fun duet together called 'Jackson' you might enjoy.' 'Old country' fo sho.

    A lot of people over romanticize the meaning behind this cover, given how close it was towards the end of his life. But Johnny was a very content man who had strong faith and peace.
    Just watch interviews of him towards the end of his life, and you'll see.

    As a side note to Cash's life, while he was stationed in Europe at an Air Force listening post Johnny was the first American to learn of the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953.

    Unfortunately, that "House of Cash" museum burned down a few years after John and June Cash passed away.

    Music producer Rick Ruben approached Johnny with this song, but Johnny refused to cover it. He had to keep insisting before finally convincing Johnny to do it.

    Johnny died shortly after this video. He was a Christian man for the latter part of his life, but like most celebrities, he had his bouts with drugs, prison, and divorce. He finally found happiness when he found Jesus Christ. In this video, he is saying that all of the money, fame and material things, are just an "empire of dirt." It really won't bring true happiness. His wife, also a famous country western singer, died a while before Johnny, and then he died after making this epic video. There is a real message to be had.
    God Bless

    i just looked up lyre chairs. it is a design of a wooden chair back featuring the stringed instrument called a lyre. they are a small harp type instrument that is held on the lap.
    the lyrics don't refer to someone who is not speaking the truth. i think this is confusing to people .
    i have never seen you so quiet while listening to a song.
