    Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

    If I hadn't been able to reuse the extra cotton, hemp, and leather from the suit; having to collect those again would have made the book cost an extra $1400. Good thing I kept some extras.

    I just watched the book making series from front to back in one go, and I wanted to say that I really admire the work you put into these projects. I took a book binding class once, and it took us 2 days to make our book, just the binding process. Our modern society makes everything acessible so easily that one forgets just how complex it is to make everyday objects. So thank you for showing us the art behind "banalities" :)

    • @htme
      @htme  8 лет назад +7

      +Gold_Two the main pages that are very wrinkled are the parchment pages, which probably won't respond well to an iron and may even create an unpleasant smell since it's animal hide. There might be other ways to help parchment relax, probably some chemical treatments but we wanted to keep it natural. But the cotton and hemp paper could be ironed for sure.

      How To Make Everything have you considered making Iron Gall Ink? Or perhaps Carbon Ink? From the early medieval Era, the recipes are fairly simple, and don't smell like animal carcass, I make it about once a month, in a bulk batch. Fairly cheap too. It also has great definition and writes much more clearly than fat-based Inks. I would be happy to send you my recipes if you are interested. Also look into the north Bennett street school here in Boston MA. They offer bookbinding, silversmithing, jewelry making, Violin making, and fine furniture making. I went there for many years and studied a wide array of trades, that I still use everyday! I feel it might fascinate you as you seen naturally inquisitive.
