  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Discovery often happens outside your comfort zone. It’s when you step out into the unknown that interesting discoveries start to take place. When they do, it’s your responsibility to share the knowledge with society.
Destin Sandlin is an aerospace and mechanical engineer from Alabama and the creator of Smarter Every Day, a RUclips channel with over 2 million subscribers and 125 million views. He’s curious about the world and the science behind everyday occurrences. Some of his most popular videos involve investigating helicopter physics, finding butterflies in the Amazon, shooting an AK-47 underwater and dropping cats in weightlessness.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Those caterpillars propelling the top layer forward faster than any one caterpillar could go- reminds me of the progression of mathematics and specifically the quote by the inventor of calculus. "If I am tall, it's because I stand on the shoulders of giants." That's the point of Destin's talk. When we inspire and teach the next generation, we propel civilization, science, and technology forward in the same way. We multiply our efforts.

kitemanmusic Tha's probably because the audience doesn't get a microphone, therefore we (the viewer) won't hear them. Plus, in Austria, panto crowds are usually looked down upon, so there might also be a cultural factor there. The audience actually liked him a lot.

TEDx is basically a TED event by independent organizers, like TEDxVienna, TEDxBerlin, etc.
In the US, many Universities organize their own TED conferences.
I think TED gave people permission to do that only a few years ago. TEDxVienna was founded about 5 years ago.

Stop thinking "if where in this situation i would..." and start thinking what do i have to do to be able to be in that situation?
If you want to change something in your life all you have to do is change things in your life. Never forget that! life will not change on its own. you are who you are because of past decisions. If you want to change all you have to do is make different decisions!

Destin this is a great TED Talk video. At the end of the video you mention inspiring children on RUclips. Well I for one am not a kid watching you on RUclips. I'm a 54 yr old guy who writes transit schedules for a living and loves watching your videos and getting "Smarter Every Day". Keep doing what you're doing!! I Love learning new things😁👍🏻

I have had so much respect for this man for so many years. i absolutely love his ambition and i love the giddy feeling you can see in his face when he is presented with new knowledge. For the past 5 years i have tried my hardest to have the same ambition and same feeling as him. i firmly believe that anyone that wants to do something must want it, think about it and then do it to the best of their ability. if you think and do, then you too could one day work at nasa and do very important things like destin. its easy to pick up a chicken and move it around, but its hard to discover the mechanics of WHY. that is what separates the talkers from the thinkers and doers. dont sit around waiting for someone to hand you the answer to your life. get out there, think and then do. You are my inspiration Destin. keep thinking and doing and i hope the world will follow with you.
