    Thank you Michelle,
    The vent connector can never be smaller than the draft hood and you are correct; it should never be bigger than it should be. How much bigger (if possible of course) depends on the WH's BTU rating, connector's length, presence of other gas burning appliances connected to the same chimney and / or manifold. For as long as this larger vent connector is complying with the code requirements and manufacturer's recommendations there should be no problems.

    Fortunately most _natural vent_ gas water heaters for _non commercial use_ are *maximum 38,500 btu's.* This makes them *safe* and *very forgiving* of a *bad installation* if installed in anything other in a *closet* or a *mobile home.* Otherwise a lot of people who purchased the *el cheapo* gas water heaters at the *big box* stores would be *pushing up daisies.*

    @Home Maintenance
    I have a question and a little back history, we bought a house and the first winter our furnace went out, I tried replacing everything on the furnace, even the blower motor and the electric board. well come to find out that our chimney was destroyed and the moister was freezing up, and then running back down into the furnace and causing the issue, so the chimney was completely useless we found out. so when they came to replace our furnace they installed 2 PVC pipes which lead out to the front of the house and we bought a brand new water heater just before the winter, and of course it is vented through the useless chimney. so my question, is it possible to convert my Atmospheric venting to a power vent and run it up to the middle of the joists and then over and straight out the back? thank you

    Does Code require placing heater tank on a base to lift it up to say 18 inches above floor? Some aids mention it, but I do not have one on my tank.

    Could you talk about how to figure out if a water heater is natural draft product induced draft? I saw a water heater with pvc pipe but not sure if it’s safe.

  • @fmora617

    I have gas hot water tank that needs a draft inducer (exhaust goes horizontal to the side of the house). Can I use an after market draft inducer and install? Or does the gas tank have to com with the draft inducer already? Thanks!

  • @fmora617
    @fmora617 11 лет назад

    I had a power vented tank that exhausted out a PVS pipe that ran 20ft down the sill & out the side of the house. The tank & draft inducer died and I replaced it with a natural draft gas tank. I made a new opening on basement wall instead of going 20 ft down the existing opening, now I go 6ft horizontally out the side of the house w/the new tank. I would say its angles maybe 15 degrees, but there is still a slight smell of gas. Should I angle it more, or do I need a gas tank with a draft inducer?

    Hi...our gas water heater is currently vented thru an old chimney that has no liner...can the water heater be vented horizontally across the basement ceiling over to an outside wall safely? (Which would make the chimney non-functioning)..Thanks!

    Thanks for the VERY informative video. Are the single wall vent pipes usually 26 gauge? Trying to distinguish if the steel pipes I see at the box stores are the right ones to use for furnace/water heater.

      Hi D Panel, I would check the label, it should state material's gauge, or ask someone in the store to verify if not listed.

    If venting horizontally when in a basement near a wall, a thimble is still required with double wall pipe correct? Also when through the wall does it have to be a certain distance from the home?

    • @Checkthishouse
      @Checkthishouse  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Jesse, is this a natural vent water heater? Are you venting through the side wall of your house and terminating there? If so, this is not permitted, you have to go above the roof with the natural vent type water heater vents. Please explain a little more about your installation.

    • @stangindude99
      @stangindude99 7 лет назад

      The install was done by previous homeowner, which has left me wondering. It is a natural draft waterheater. I believe the previous heater was a power vent because the pipe that goes through the sidewall is pvc with a T that has mesh on each side on the exterior.

    • @Checkthishouse
      @Checkthishouse  7 лет назад +1

      Well... that doesn't sound right, you need to connect to a chimney / go above the roof or replace this water heater with one that can be vented through a sidewall.

    I have a water heater in a closet in a garage. it vents with a 3" single wall and then connects into what appears to be a 4" cement pipe which goes through the house out to the roof. My carbon monoxide detector keeps going off and this water heater appears to be the possible culprit. Even though the water heater is not in the house but in the garage. the transition is a large coupling that looks like the type used for going into a drywall ceiling.

    Really informative my propaneheater doesn't run to a chime so should I use chimney piping from my draft hood to the outside?

    • @Checkthishouse
      @Checkthishouse  9 лет назад

      Thanks Armando, I'm not sure, I'd need brand and model of your appliance to check its requirements. If it has a regular draft hood like on my video it should be vented vertically above the roof.

    • @MrArmandoDleon
      @MrArmandoDleon 9 лет назад

      Home Maintenance What I guess I was asking is do I need B Vent piping or should I use fireplace pipe fittings because the water heater doesn't vent into an existing chimney it just goes up about 12" then 1/4" per foot for about 4' to 5' then 90 degrees up for about 12 feet. Its all done with B vent piping. The model is PremierPlus model #BFG614OS403NOHV. Really appreciate this it was not correctly done and had really bad back draft so I want to correct it because the tank is in good shape just need some guidance on the actual chimney itself!

    • @Checkthishouse
      @Checkthishouse  9 лет назад

      Armando D'Leon It should be B-Vent starting at least one inch before it enters / penetrates any surface like wall, ceiling, any combustible material, inaccessible space, or unconditioned space (attic). If the WH itself is located in some unconditioned space the entire run should be double wall (B-Vent) starting at the draft hood. So the vertical B-Vent is fine, no need to install fireplace fittings those are triple wall I believe. Back-drafts are often caused by a missing or improper / improperly installed rain cap.

    • @MrArmandoDleon
      @MrArmandoDleon 9 лет назад

      Home Maintenance I guess I don't understand the difference between B vent and the venting I used for my Pellet stove. The Pellet stove had a double wall and the WH has a single wall. Do I just need the single wall and that will be okay to run from the draft hood to the rain cap or do I need the double wall piping?

    • @MrArmandoDleon
      @MrArmandoDleon 9 лет назад

      Home Maintenance Nevermind I think the B-Vent is the same thing I used for the Pellet stove and I can just use the other piping after that makes sense now only need the B-vent in the wall.

    Hi Mark,
    How is combustion air delivered to that closet? Are there any air supplying vents open to exterior, attic, or some other areas? Where is your CO alarm located? Are there any other fossil fuel appliances inside the house that might be affecting Carbon Monoxide detector? Are there any direct openings between the closet and the living area?

    What is the slope required for venting? I read 1/4" per foot. is this correct?

    • @Checkthishouse
      @Checkthishouse  8 лет назад

      +David G Hi David, you're correct, a minimum of 1/4" slope (rise towards the chimney stack) per linear foot of venting connector's horizontal run is required.

    I have two water heaters over 75 gallon and they take 3” venting. So the 75 gallon and over take 4” or larger statement is incorrect. They’re old water heaters so that may be the reason.

    Great video!!! I work for Whirlpool/ American water heaters tech support and you would not believe the incorrect venting I see...This video is very informative and done correctly!..But I do always tell the owners that if it is a 3in draft hood for venting all the venting should be 3 in...I have found this can cause venting problems if it is bigger than it should be...What is your take on this? Thanks for the video...I should start referring plumbers to this video..LoL

    Hi,
    What do you mean by "it needs"? Was it designed for the side wall venting / power venting or you have a natural draft water heater which you'd like to convert to a power vented type? If it is natural draft, it is unlikely that its design permits such conversion but you'd have to check that with its manufacturer.
    Go to my website (link under the video), click "Click To Ask" button on that page (right side) and put "sidewall venting" into the search box on the page that opens.

    Can i insulate the vent pipe with some sort of tape or something?

    • @Checkthishouse
      @Checkthishouse  8 лет назад

      Hi Green Karat,
      A single wall water heater vent pipe (if this is what you have) should not be insulated. If by taping you’re referring to vent pipe joints… well, that’s debatable. Some building inspectors consider it OK, some forbid using any type of tape on connector joints. The main reason behind NOT using tape (heat resistant / high temperature flue tape) on WH vent pipe connectors and connections is that it prevents visual inspection and spotting of any problems such as corrosion.
      Double wall / B-vent type pipes utilize air, between the inner and outer pipe, as an insulator. So, if you have a single wall vent pipe, replace it with double wall and that will take care of insulation - don’t tape any joints of a double wall pipe as well.

      +Home Maintenance Hi thank you very much.. I have an hydroponics for my wife veggies regimen lol in the garage. I've noticed that the gas water heater heat up the room sometimes too much. I wonder if i can insulated the exhaust pipe since is about 4-5' till it hits the ceiling and go out. I put one of those jackets to cover the heater and helps a lot so i know that doing something to the exhausted to insulate it will be great.
      Thanks in advance!!

      I have a single wall btw

    • @Checkthishouse
      @Checkthishouse  8 лет назад

      :) Hi Green, where it hits the ceiling it should be double wall all the way to its termination above the roof. The correct way to minimize that excess heat radiating from the vent pipe would be to replace the single wallsection with double / B-vent type. This should take care of your extra heat problem. I’m not sure what your location (climate) is and if your garage is conditioned / heated, but B vents are required in un-conditioned spaces where condensation may develop and cause vent pipe corrosion (garages, attics, etc.). Let me know. Darek
