Great video! just installed mine Christmas eve. It started leaking the day before after 28 years in service. Took me 4 hours for removal, and an extra trip back for another part and installation. I'm not very confident in my plumbing skills, but this video made it straight forward and fairly easy.

Plumbing, Mechanical, and Fuel Gas Codes have changed in the past years. One thing not mentioned is the size of the flue pipe. In some cases for example a 40 gallon gas fired atmospheric (Chimney) draft, water heater with a flue pipe size, was 3" as shown in the video. Most states the size has changed to 4". The water heaters manufactured now, have what is called a "closed combustion chamber". Meaning where the pilot and burner assemblies are, is sealed. That is why there is a spark ignition for the pilot. There are circumstances that still allow 3", but that is an important fact that should have been mentioned, as to specifically check in your area, and circumstance. Due to the potential for Carbon Monoxide to "back draft" into the living space.
It would have been great if all the tools** used were listed on your webpage. For example, the exact deburring, copper pipe cutter, air pressure tool and the air pressure gauge tool at 1:37.

Youssef Farhat a drip leg collects moisture in the gas line and is not needed when gas is dry. As always, follow the code requirements of your area and contact a pro if you have questions. Thanks for watching.
Lowe's Home Improvement Thank you for the well-informed response! I did some follow up reading and you are absolutely correct. It appears as though my home inspector conflated the terms "sediment trap" and "drip leg," and that these are commonly confused terms. Still, it seems like sediment traps are to be installed at the entry point of gas into water heaters, furnaces, and boilers for the reason you mentioned. It would have been nice if the video mentioned it, but it's still a great video that I'll refer to in the future! Thumbs up for the great online customer service at Lowe's!
There is a "drip leg", / sediment trap. The drip leg/sediment trap is installed at the bottom of the vertical pipe. In the video, there is a Tee fitting at the bottom of the vertical pipe, the "Bull" (side) of the Tee going to the gas valve, then a short nipple and cap, on the bottom. Obviously due to any moisture, or sediment which will fall into the drip leg, or sediment trap. Whether there is "dry gas" in the area or not, the International Mechanical Code , and the National Fuel Gas Code books, require it !

it is cracked some where else other then the bottom of the tank; alas the tank maybe 1/2 full then you need 10 people to move it. So drain what is left in the tank.
Don't forget to remove the crappy plastic drain valve on the bottom of your new water heater and replace is with a high quality brass valve and nipple to space it out a bit. A water heater should be drained bi-annually to keep the sediment from building up, and those plastic drain valves don't last.

A gas leak from appliances are not safe to have in your home! Gas leakage could increase the risk of fire or worse, possibly an explosion. The gas is not safe to breathe in either, the stuff is poisonous... If you do not drown or blow yourself... or anyone else up, what they won't know can't hurt you! The main thing that kills most people though is the carbon monoxide gas leaks when they have defective venting. You can smell natural gas and you can also use water and dish soap to make leaks bubble. Much cheaper and already will have on hand. The part no one likes is hauling a new one in and hauling/disposing of the old one. Especially the disposal.

Tank doesn't work after? You re-check your install, and worst-case scenario return the tank for a replacement if faulty.

Wait he said to drain the hot water out of the tank I mean every time I replace mine it’s broken so how does that work
it is cracked some where else other then the bottom of the tank; alas the tank maybe 1/2 full then you need 10 people to move it.
Ever notice how all the plumbers and 'master' plumbers only spread fear and contempt while providing no informative content in their comments? Oh well, it's not as if there is a conflict of interest present where they profit upon your ignorance.
Izzy Odd we don’t give our knowledge away for free
Dragons Rage knowledge, hehe
It's all nice tell it blows up. And kills call a plumber
@@DragonsRage It's the exploitation that is the crime. I was quoted $3500 for a tank replacement. The unit costs $1500. So $2k of labor for less than a days worth of work and maybe $30 is parts. It's heartless to spread fear and exploit people that lack knowledge.
A gas leak from appliances are not safe to have in your home! Gas leakage could increase the risk of fire or worse, possibly an explosion. The gas is not safe to breathe in either, the stuff is poisonous... Please be extremely careful with gas fireplaces, air conditioning, boilers, ovens/stoves, etc.
Also, do not forget to reinstall the aerator! it can act like a semi-filter to keep debris out of your drinking water that comes out of the faucet! It will allow to let the water run smoothly too! You do not want to end up in a messy situation! Other than that, good video!
how come they never tell people the importance of checking or changing the anode??
Brian Williams: Because this is an install video, not a maintenence video. Why would you talk about the anode rod on a brand-new tank? -You wouldn't be looking at the rod for a few years from the install.
Most people don't even know there's such a thing!
When you show water dripping from discharge tube, A) what is the pressure gauge shown connected to, to measure the pressure and B) where is the mechanism located to decrease the pressure to below 80 psi?
You adjust your water pressure with the water pressure regulator.
You said PSI shouldn't be gallons per minute. Just asking for a friend
Approximately four inches from floor don’t drain or bleed air from faucet use tub spout no aerator more flow
Where you lost me at, was putting teflon tape on the threads of a compression fitting🤦♂️
How I get electicity..
Theres no electric in a water heater
Very nice video...Thanks
Does anyone know if those plastic pieces on water heater top connections are supposed to be removed? They're on the inside as well. Are they simply protecting the water connections just before installing it but need to be removed?
Nice VO work, Josh!!
I need to see the video on tank less water heaters.
Man, I paid so much money, for what looks like a simple install. I paid the same price in labor as the purchase price of my water heater.
😕
I just paid $2100 and one month later some pipes are leaking. Stopped leaking by the time they arrived here so now saying it could not be leaking . Although towels were WET absorbing the water leaking. ! Now What.
Didn’t specify flare but size
This is a super basic install video. Smh
If the water pressure is above 80 psi it *MUST* be regulated UPC 608.2
Expansion Tank is *REQUIRED* if you have a closed water system UPC 608.3
A guy with the name Tony Bruno WOULD know about plumbing code! Aye Big Tony B I got a leak ova here. Fugget about it.
What the hell does turning on the stove burners have anything to do with a hot water heater vent in another part of the house in the basement ??
Me and a buddy did this. Funny story, he says now we gonna get this in here? It was sitting on top of a about 3' foundation. I said hold my beer. I grabbed it and lifted it up by myself and it was in. Looked at him, he was scratching his head with jaw dropped. I said what, I take your heavy ass air compressor out of your car all the time
Video starts at 1:38
Tanks!
DO NOT FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS: especially with the braided hose. THEY will eventually leak and flood your basement. Use COPPER LINES!!!
How do I repair tile that is used as a barrier to stop heat. Am I doing something wrong when I apply the mortar to wall? I mix as package says. I put new dry wall, then concrete board before I put the mortar on. Pleas help. Thanks, Mike
+MichaelR Bannach clarifying...you've replaced drywall near your water heater and are having trouble with mortar for heat-resistant tile?
What about that something like a tin ceiling? Or would the heat get to high?
great video. Thanks
Good video.
Ok........ here we go, hold my beer...
How'd it go?
@@DaddyLongLegs44 I don’t remember
I want to got the design if it possibal.. I wanna got your answer as soon as you can
Very nice video. I'd love to do it myself next time since changing all pipes to flexible ones are just very easy job.
I live in Massachusetts, is it ok to do it on our own? Or have to be licensed for gas and plumbing works with permit as well by law?
If you do not drown or blow yourself... or anyone else up, what they won't know can't hurt you! The main thing that kills most people though is the carbon monoxide gas leaks when they have defective venting. You can smell natural gas and you can also use water and dish soap to make leaks bubble. Much cheaper and already will have on hand. The part no one likes is hauling a new one in and hauling/disposing of the old one. Especially the disposal.
Great video!
Love the background music
The video was really good!
There's just one thing I didn't understand.
Did Lars have to pay to get into the pie eating contest?
Was not expecting a Stand by Me quote here.
I stopped at "close all the windows, turn up all the gas." But I was curious so I continued, then I heard words such as solder, debur, etc. I'll just let a pro do this. LOL!
Kung-Fu Mojo Same here!
CONGRATULATIONS! OBVIOUSLY YOU 2 ARE THE 2 SMARTEST PEOPLE IN THIS COMMENT SECTION. MY SPIDEY SENSES TELL ME A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE LOVE TO BLOW STUFF UP.
If folks do not want to do such job, fine, get the pro. I am an avid DIY and replacing a water heater is easir than working on an engine. Plus the money saved goes to more tools.
Rob Fern - And the tools necessary to install and test a gas fired water heater properly (not incorrectly as shewn in this video) would cost about £1000.00.
Wallace: Bullshit. After buying the proper replacement tank from a home center and in most cases $30-worth of flex-lines/gas supply line/proper thread-sealant, the rest is lefty-loosey/righty-tighty + close-valve/open-valve for anyone with half a brain. Tank doesn't work after? You re-check your install, and worst-case scenario return the tank for a replacement if faulty.
Wow great video !!!
I just found out..$450.+tax to install a water heater....get real. I was going to splurge and let a plumber install it I thought $200 at the most
Home Depot's subcontractor (ARS) quoted $1,750 to install. Water heater is extra.
@@lowlyjimson5260 whaaaat? Lmao 🤣
Now it's $3,700 to Install 🤦
@@boomcitystudio1207yeah this comment had me cracking up. $200 is not both compared to todays rates.
