4:38 "so i went ahead and built this model to show you how to properly install vents in your attic" Wow. A+. Thanks for the excellent video.
This guy makes it look so easy. Somebody needs to do a video of this V.S. reality, where you can expect a bunch of cussing and objects being thrown lol.
The definition of genius is making it look easy.
Amen! I was just thinking the same thing, sounds easier said then done. Im currently replacing my exhaust bathroom fan and watching this.
I watched this video then googled my local electrician, lol.

way more info than I expected. This is the clearest video I've seen in a long time. Exceptional job!

If you have the right tools, if not it could just be easier and cheaper to pay someone
super clear video. still not a project i feel comfortable tackling but i appreciate understanding the process.
It is a difficult process to do especially if you have to go into the attic, you can check my video on bathroom fans as well.

I feel this hard
Your wife sounds like my wife's twin sister.
Never has a comment been more true
I love how wives support their hubs.
I like this video. Very easy to understand. I have replaced and installed 8 ceiling fans. These take patients and determination. One fan I replaced had two dead mice in it. Prepare yourself for anything when you take down the old fan. Wear safety glasses. Rubber Gloves. Pray.
Hey great video! I followed it to replace the very old fan / light / heater in my bathroom with a Broan 655, with no attic access, but with existing wiring and ductwork. If you can possibly get into the attic, I would recommend that and installing the unit from above. Some things I found: Obviously mark both sides of all wire connections before undoing the wire nuts on the old unit. On the new Broan you have to disassemble the unit before you install it, then reassemble it in the ceiling so take pictures / remember how the thing came apart cuz its not obvious where things go when you go to put it together. I carefully cut out the existing metal brackets with a sawzall and framed in 2x4's between the joists to screw the sides of the new Broan unit to. Remember you have to have a big notch in your framed rough opening to allow the house wiring that goes in through the side of the Broan unit to pass through the rough opening when inserting the unit from below. In addition to the snaps and hose clamp provided, I would use aluminum tape to seal the duct hose to the unit as this junction is really leaky without it. Its hard to get the house wiring fished in through the knock out in the side of the unit because it has to make an immediate 90 degree turn so obviously bend this turn into the house wiring before trying to insert it into the unit. All in all the job was tougher than I was expecting for a home owner (me) and I probably would have hired someone to do it knowing that. it took about 3 1/2 hours mostly working with my hands over my head so if you have neck, shoulder or other problems I would say hire someone to do it.
First I thought I'd fix my fans bearing, then I realized that the fan was toast . So I thought new fan, then I discovered it was directly wired to electrical not plugged in. I then noticed the duct work wasn't secured to the fan housing, off to the attic where I discovered the duct travelled 1 foot horizontally releasing into insulation and an unvented attic. I love home repair.
Reminds me of my old house we had water leaking from the skylight in the master bath it went to the fan and the repair guy said he found over a gallon of water stuck in the vent line which was improperly installed. It went something like that this was around 2011 ish.
It never ends!!
Sheesh! Just buy a new house at that point.
Our house was built in the 90s with the exhaust venting into the attic. The fan part was no problem. The roof work was something I never would have attempted without this video. Thank you!
It took all day, due to two trips to the hardware store and the problem with a crawl space of an attic, but it saved a heap of money.
THANK YOU so much for your easy and super clear video it helped me feel empowered to replace my broken bathroom vent myself . I went so great and it feels so good to have repaired it myself. THANK YOU
That's great to hear, Cheryl! Well done 💪

Thank you for showing me how I will never do this now. Lol
Thanks I definitely wont be doing this on my own ;)
I just replaced mine. I did it the easy way. All I had to do was buy a new motor and fan that matched the one I had. A couple screws and unplugged the old motor, then just reversed for the new one. Took less time than this video. He’s showing you how to replace the whole housing and how to mount, the whole 9. If you can buy a new motor and fan just do that. No need to mess with electricity, it’s plug and play
My 40 yr old house has a discontinued exhaust fan :( no choice but to replace the whole unit. I'm 73 and not sure I want to try this ??
By far the best professional way I have seen on you tube
I wish my attic were that clean!
Very good video. I especially liked when you showed how to seal off the oversize drywall holes.

You can buy extra cybernetic bionic hands at Lowe's now. If you buy eight, you get four free, at $2.5 million for parts and installation.

Thank you for this really informative video. My fan is so noisy that I can’t stand another day with it. I’m 62 and I’m not afraid to try it. I have done other electrical work, and it’s not as hard as you think. You’ll feel good when you do it yourself, only if you feel that you can.
You make it look so easy.
Awesome knowledge
Very informative and detailed!
Learn more from you. Thanks 😊
Good job! Very informative!!😊
Am I the only person who prefer loud exhaust fans? Exhaust fans in bathrooms have always been loud in every house I grow up in and in every house I have lived including the current home I own.
Helpful, thank you
nice job, think I want an electrician, I am just getting too old for this stuff. Either that or I 'll get help. Good share.
I'm going to do the same exact project after I bought the exact same roof cap used in the video then I found this vid! What a coincidence!
Thank you , very good video
Thank you
Nice video, Thank you...
great video, thank you.
came for the first part of the video but ended up watching the whole thing
Exhaust fans that goes bad just needs a new motor and fan.
You do not need the whole housing assembly. Just get a fan and motor that fits.
I found this video helpful as it showed me how to replace the motor: ruclips.net/video/S7QFIzAZ1LU/видео.html
Broan discontinued my 10 year old fan and I tried 3 from Menards before I discovered the change was too drastic and I had to replace the entire box. This video helped me as I could not determine how to remove the box. Now I'm sure I have brackets between the joists.
Thanks I was nervous about that because the previous owners installation tile around the fan .
great video

That was smoooth!
Thank you! I'll never do this now!
haha. I was considering doing this myself till i saw this video
The dislikes are from the people who put it up wrong lol
This is so easy. I'm going to pay someone while I watch Netflix. 😊🎉
When he switched it on, I thought it didn't work 😂
I didnt hear the exhaust fan either. I think he knew it also. His face said it all. Oops I forked up
Lmao fr
A lot of newer fans are so quiet you can’t even hear them. Some of them have a little light so you can tell if it’s on or not.
You make it look so easy and clear but please stop that annoying music. We want to hear only your voice
Thanks dude
Thanks a lot
Thanks for the video =)
Thank you for the video. I have an issue with a small bathroom's exhaust fan, as it leaks water and makes ugly water marks on my bathroom ceiling. I looked at on top of the roof and couldn't find out vent. I figured out that it doesn't have one or it might be on the Attic. The space to reached Attic is very small. I am afraid that it might cost me a lot of money to fixed the problem. Please provide me with some suggestions. I am older and I am in no way a handy person.
I can tell this is about as easy and simple as someone can make a how-to on this, but all it does is confirm that it's something I'd call a professional to install lol. More power to people who are handy and could do all this themselves, but I am just the opposite of handy when it comes to these types of things.
Same here. God bless their hearts, trying to make it look so easy, but once he took out a power tool and started sawing away at things. My mind was made up.
thank you
How much including intal cost??? Need this for 2 bathrooms, 1956 all original home. Thanks!

When buying a new fan (0:10), don't you also have to check the duct size? What if you have a 3" duct and you buy a fan for a 4" duct?
I'm sure there are lots of other details that could be covered for specific cases, but this video does a helpful job of covering the basics!
honestly you can use 3in fan with 4in duct it's fine; but 4" fan with 3" duct is not allowed by IRC code based on my limited recollection.
That was my situation, the new fan had a 4 inch duct and the existing ductwork 3 inches but fortunately Lowe's sold an adapter
This video is awesome. It covers evey aspects and possible outcomes during the job. Thank you
Thnx. for the video. One question though.
What difference would it make, should one just screw down the exhaust part right on to the top of the shingles, and seal it? This would avoid cutting away the shingles. I cant see it leaking if it gets sealed properly, screws and all.
This video made installing a fan look pretty easy.
Great video with simple, easy to understand straightforward explanations.
Is that ok that the placement of the duct's end in the outside wall is higher than the fan itself? Will not the condensed water stay in the duct that way? I already have a 4” duct connected to the kitchen fan and it is running about 10” above the place where I’m planning to install the bathroom fan. Can I connect bathroom fan to that duct? Thank you.
Don't forget to get your duct at a length where you can allow the water to pool at a spot that is not your fan (i.e. the electrical), and I would recommend to everyone to check what you have done after you have been using it. I look at my seals, seams, and all about once a month for everything. You never know when a small mistake overlooked when installed will cause a great problem down the road. Better to fix it before it causes a greater issue. The water pooling in the duct will be easier to repair than one that allows water that may come in to run all the way to the fan. Be it electrical or where you have it secured, you want to inspect it regularly.
I like the ruf
Awesome video but i have no idea why im watching im still a child but still this video is awesone
Easy as pie!
7:22 you should probably put some insulation over the top of that fan also. And, in addition to that, if you buy some really fancy fan, some of them aren't "contact rated" with insulation, so, the only way to insulate those is to build a box or something around them.
It is a difficult process to do especially if you have to go into the attic, you can check my video on bathroom fans as well.
My new house is the same. Vents not exhaust through roof siting in attic. Been debating on roof ventilation or through the sofee. Since the house got a new roof very scare to cut a hole in roof.
I have a 688 bath fan and it’s for me as a gift

Wow this is way more complicated than I would have guessed
Nice and clear; thanks for posting. BTW, is "joist" with a "t" at the end of the word. "Joice" or more properly "Joyce" is a woman's name.
I prefer to put fan on the wall, but most electrician prefer to install fan on ceiling, was told that exhausts moisture to ceiling towards gutter area, would moisture leaking be my concern sometime in future?
Great video now I understand alot better!!
It is a difficult process to do especially if you have to go into the attic, you can check my video on bathroom fans as well.
Venting out the soffit works well Angostura insulation companies will vent that way.
What if my attic has roof turbines? Are those adequate enough to pull out the moisture from the bathroom fan?

Was he going to trouble shoot after he hit the switch to see if it worked? Or was the fan that quiet?
any tips on fixing roof leak on a very very small budget
Tarp and duct tape or calk it.
Everyone can agree. Loud fans are better
I am trying to remove the grill however it does not seem like there is two springs holding it. Its seems like the grill is connected to the actual unit as it does not simply come off. I have tried using a bit of force but do not want to break it. Any advice would be appreciated
Pav M if there is a light in the center, remove the light bulb and there is a nut behind where the light bulb was which holds the grill up
do we need to seal the fan box? there are fiberglass in attic area
Paul Chenlu Zhang yes
Are all bathroom fans the same size? I don't want to buy a replacement too big or small. If not the same, how to a measure?
no attic in the world looks that clean
Mines does.
maybe if the house is freshly built
I’m going to be painting old cabinet and spray them. How do you mix the paint to spray?? I really liked the video and will be needing lots of advice on doing a old very dirty and greasy.

Yeah this definitely is not easy. 😊 Very small space I'm trying to tape and wire in a small space with living room to work w/... Unfortunately whoever wired my original Short changed.. the electrician had a field day and said the same thing I did who the f*** installed this 😂 it made me so happy
How is it that when ducted out the soffit that the air comes right back in? The force of the fan is blowing it out no? In NZ and Australia 95% of kitchen or bathroom fans vent out the soffit not causing any mould issues
Is that fan always open to the outside or is there a flap in that roof exhaust?
Thanks for posting. I’d be to scared to drill through roof. 😳
You: bout to get this good exhaust fan for around $45
After watching the video: yeahhhhhh that's about $200 worth of items I DNT care to get. It's not that serious I'm good👍🤣😂
you can rent tools

I have a bathroom heater where that fan is. I think I'd choose the heater rather than a fan because it get's so cold in the bathroom in the winter.
Well Explained, w mid-west accent lol
Yeah, I’m gonna probably mess it up. What’s the ballpark estimate for installation?
great job, but I couldn't do that, if I tried.
How would you spell roof if you had to guess based on the way this guy says it? Maybe like Rüf? Ruph?
I would like to have had a better view of the damper inside that duct. Mine is stuck open and so far I haven't been able to get the fan housing out.
OH when we installed a bathroom fan , it just vented into the attic, explains the moisture up there.
It is a difficult process to do especially if you have to go into the attic, you can check my video on bathroom fans as well.
Aside from the fan and the duct, shouldn't you also install a backdraft damper?
