- A bomb at TVC on 4th March 2001 caused UK viewers to see BBC World presentation for only the second time. A repeat of the previous hour was initially shown before Susan Osman began broadcasting from the Westminster studios at 0100. The clip begins at this point and also includes the signing off at 0130 and a brief mention from Sky News.
I lived nearby and was having a late shower when I heard a low boom sound and felt hair at the back of my neck rise. I had no idea what had happened until many hours later. (There was a thwarted explosion at the Territorial Army barracks around the corner not long after that incident.)
I love how the reporter starts to say "glass" but changes it to "glarss"
Thank goodness they were nowhere near the main studio at the time. Wow!
I was working in north London that night, and noticed the TV had gone to a recording (we had one for a work related purpose), then heard a bang from the west!
I've always thought that the phrase "controlled explosion" is a bit of an oxymoron due to the nature of an explosion itself but in this case I would assume it's related to the fact that the police set off the explosion under controlled conditions (evacuations, cordons, etc) rather than actually controlling the explosion itself.
When the BBC had decent talent and dedication to their jobs willing to deal with any situation. You can clearly see that they are shoved in any old corner in Westminister probably not even in a proper studio yet the gallery team manage to play out the titles and music almost perfectly and Sue Osman managing to improvise using paper notes in the absence of an auto cue all to deliver the news to the license payers without knowing whether their closest colleagues are at risk in a bomb infested bui
No one’s worried about foot-and-mouth disease now...
Legend has it that it was the R.I.R.A. Who can really say. Sure was a blast at the time
I was watching the live news broadcast when this happened! I just remember the newsreader getting up from his desk and running then the screen went black!
by far the best countdown
