  • For decades BBC Television Centre in west London was home to some of the nations best loved programmes. But it all came to an end when the site was sold to make way for a housing and leisure development. Around 1000 flats will be created on the site and some of the old magic is set to return to the studios too. Tolu Adeoye reports.

    An iconic building but the price tag is way over the top. How that estate agent can say it is a sensible level for the local community with a straight face is beyond me. Even the stars of TVC of yesteryear would struggle to afford some of those flats.

    Television Centre was iconic because of what it was used for and its place in British society and history. Turning it into expensive flats and a shopping centre, only using it for a few programmes rather than as the hub of the national broadcaster, guts it of its integrity, stops it from being of any interest. It's such a crying shame.

      Just be thankful they didn't demolish the three studios they already have, mainly due to their listed status for the facade of Studio TC1.

      If it dosent serve the purpose anymore because of lack of demand for so many separate studios then you nay as well repurpose it or else leave it to rot. You sound like you'd rather see it crumble than be lovingly restored back to how it originally looked on the outside and used for useful purposes inside.

    What a shame, seems a lot of famous buildings are becoming ridiculously priced flats for the upper class. Should have left it as a television centre, probably had more appeal in it’s old original state, guess all that history has been ripped out and dumped now though. Would have agreed with this development much more if it still had ties to broadcasting. Could have been a learning campus for the university’s department of film and media or even a hub for the BFI, at least everyone would have benefited from it then opposed to just the rich.

    So in 2019 the situation of Television Centre studios is thus - Studio TC2 and TC3 are now sublet to ITV Daytime and Good Morning, Britain, Lorraine, Loose Women and This Morning air in those studios. Peston and Sunday Brunch also make use of TC2, with TC3 maintaining the permanent sets for Good Morning Britain and This Morning, making it much harder to rent out this studio at weekends (virtually impossible). TC1 is the main general entertainment studio - Graham Norton, Last Leg, Jonathan Ross, QI, Russell Howard, Bake Off etc all use it, and it is a fantastic studio - shame there is not another one next door to help ease the flow.

    They should have kept an extra studio, because three studios is not enough for the vast London needed programmes. Studio 1 is massive at 10,800 Sq Ft and does not suit certain shows. Studio 2 is too small at 3,430 Sq Ft and Studio 3 is just right at 8,000 Sq Ft, so they should have kept Studio 4 which was also 8,000 Sq Ft, but money played into the decision and it did not happen, although there are documents written proposing keeping Studio 4, it never happened.

    Nice development, but I would have expected that apartments starting at 650k would have functional heating. Apparently the developer and the building management doesn't consider heating as something essential. Or maybe freezing in your flat is the best way to live in a luxury apartment.

    Load of tripe, as who would like live in an - effectively an industrial estate, just look at dingy Westfield with it’s haunting glass square structures, lousy scruffy Wood Lane. To me it’s little better to see TV shows, with just three studios, but they did a good job of the reception area fully restored, but miss going up the 6th floor news studios, as will never forgive the BBC for selling the dream factory.

    How typical of an incompetent and wasteful organisation. TVC had been regularly upgraded since it opened, a year before it closed the lighting galleries were converted to LED. The studios were effectively state of the art and quite simply the best of their kind in Europe if not the world. The morons on the 6th floor and the creeps at Broadcasting House thought it might be a good idea to sell it off to a developer for much less than it was worth and then lease back some of the studios at premium prices. London is short of fully equipped and staffed studios so why sell them?
    Even now, BBC has to rent studios from ITV and some of the remaining movie centres such as Shepperton. Now if this were a private company there would simply be quiet laughter but WE paid for this building AND New Broadcasting house, what have they done with all that money? It's time we threw away the licence fee and let this flatulent abomination sink.

    • @johnking5174
      @johnking5174 11 месяцев назад +1

      BBC doesn't rent any studios from ITV, as ITV doesn't have any proper TV studio centres anymore. ITV rent from the BBC to use Studios TC2 and TC3 for their daytime shows.

Also the courts threw out all but 1 case against DLT, which was that he assaulted a 22 year old (horrible, but not a paedo). The underage ones were dismissed for lack of evidence, which considering the little (but damning) evidence of the rest of yewtree, is saying something.

    • @deltaboogaloo633
      @deltaboogaloo633 6 лет назад +4

      It is the other way around. Becuase of how they work, the BBC is less biased than they would be privatised. If they started advertising, BBC News 24 would go the way of CNN in America, also known as the Clinton News Network. Because no ads run on thee BBC, they are a free animal. If a company is being shady, the BBC and most british news outlets would be the first to report it. Because you get paid advertisers, you may want to avoid criticizing your paymasters.
      CNN is always sponsored some how. They dont report on current affairs based on the advertisers. If Coca Cola for instance sponsored BBC News and BBC ran a report on something shady going on behind the scenes at the coca cola company, what do you think would happen? Because we pay the BBC, we actually get more of a say in what goes on. Because you already pay them, most BBC contact telephone lines are free of charge.
