This is the most knee and tyre slapping I have ever seen.
The sound and feel of slapping a tyre is strangely satisfying though... :-p
and foot tapping, just to round it off!
I think they were slapping the image in the Pirelli calendar
Happy slapping Harry 😂
Hahaha
I can't believe I've just sat for nearly 20minutes and watched two men talk about tyres.....haha
Loved it Harry. Another awesome video.
Thank you both.
I could have happily sat through another 20 minutes of it, I do like a bit of rubber me.
Buggs haha. Same. Most UK car RUclipsrs make the same old videos over and over again. Harry and Petrol Ped are my favourite two.
Well, tyres are what makes the world go round...
when set of tyres cost more than a watch.
Mr PSB I can’t believe Harry doesn’t have at least one car lift in his garage. Having to use regular jacks to change the tires on a Countach just seems wrong.
Dougals knowledge and enthusiasm was brilliant
That guy is without doubt the most knowledgeable tyre man I've ever heard. The guy who runs my local tyre shop just about knows to put air in them!
As a classic car owner an enthusiast this was a great video. I mean most of us know the basics about tire fitment, but this was a great video demonstrating some of the differences between modern offerings and the tires "our" older cars were originally fitted with. Kudos to Pirelli for churning out the P7 again!
Know what would be really cool? A show with Harry's Garage and Ed China.
coffeefish two gods together
Bas BlasterXP ...yep two honest guys together..
from the thumbnail it looked like ed china was actually in this one.
I second that. ‘H’ get on the phone to ed.
Definitely think Harry would be much more suited to Edd than Mike brewer!
I don't own a classic car. Still watched. Cheers
Oh man, I love me some tire talk. I worked in a tire shop for years and loved it. I think I may be on the spectrum...
The wideness of Countach tires is so awesome
The knee slapping and foot tapping definitely added to this detailed tyre discussion, good stuff.
i never thought i would be so interested in the conversation. Thank you for treating the subject. I can't wait for your next video!
For some reason, I have missed out on this vid up till now and gee, absolutely great. Wish this was 4x the length with even more details and insights. I truly hope you re-invite Dougal for a big interview on tyre development over the years...you re the man for that very job coz honestly, most others simply wouldnt have the background knowledge to ask the right questions.
Harry and Dougal making tyres....interesting and fun to hear about. I love that Dougal is blatantly a tyre/car nerd in the best possible way, too. Always good to know there are still some proper professional geeks out there in the trades.
Thank you. Longstone Tyres is basically a shed full of obsolete tyres and nerds.
Interesting. I know tyre and suspension technology has improved enormously. Interesting to hear that a new 'better' tyre wouldn't improve an older car, that it needs a period tyre to give of it's best. I have always thought the tyres your car comes with when new are probably the tyres that you need. Years ago on a Mk 1 Focus I replaced the original Bridgestone (I think) tyres with supposedly superior unidirectional ones and, whilst the ride was probably slightly improved, it ruined the handling. May have been due to the shoulder profile, having learned something from this. Thanks, as always, Harry. Still can't get over your Norway trip videos by the way. I could watch and watch those! Fantastic!
I use Hankook S1 V3 on my (suspension-wise very similar) 2006 Focus Mk2 ST. Best tyre I ever had - tons of grip in every corner.
Plus, a lot cheaper than the big names.
I fell out with an old friend recently because he thought my mention of winter tyres was the most tedious thing he'd ever heard.
This video is sweet music, and I've found another handful of facts about tyres.
If you're bored, you're boring :)
Greetings from Dartmoor, where for us winter tyres have been 'normal' for many years, I just love the looks I get when our base model Corsa drives right past a Range Rover Sport stuck on ice with its silly low profile tyres :)
I get two seasons of winter driving out of my snow tires. I use Continental 225/60 r16, or Michelin Alpin/primacy - car is a Buick 2008 lacrosse
I sympathise
Another great video to watch, thanks Harry.
As soon as I saw the words "Tyre for your classic car" I knew it would be Dougal. Legend!
Hi. I'm just a Media W###e
No rubber plants were hurt in the making of this video only milked of their rubbery goodness. Very informative conversation thank you gentleman.
My first car (Saab 900 from '89) had tyres which were 15+ years old, they were terrible in the rain with understeer in every corner and the occasional oversteer when entering a corner too hot. However the man's not hot so after a round on the Ring and multiple trips round Europe putting well over 15k miles on them they were definitely done for. To be honest it was fun being young and dumb but looking back it couldve ended way different for me or the people surrounding me.
Fantastic video Harry. Tires, and their specific performance characteristics, can really make a good riding vehicle a great riding vehicle no matter what you're driving. Trying to find someone like Dougal, and the knowledge he possesses, in the states is so very hard to do. Going into a typical tire store is like going into the typical 'big box' hardware store. The personnel don't know anything except pricing. I found this video extremely informative as well as entertaining.
Harry thank you for sharing this invaluable information. This explains so much about handling that the tire shops just don’t mention.
Ah, the DeTomato Pantooni; what a car! 😁
A true legend of a car.
well its tyres had the right heightth
Harhar funnycliffe
love the trancy tunage. loved it on the norway trip. well done on happy uplifting music choices.
More please like this. Fascinating technical stuff. A separate video on your Pirelli calendar collection wouldn't go amiss too!
enjoyable vid guys, makes me feel better after booking my classic in for 4 tyres next week..was hardly any wear on them but it was the age and light cracking..so needed to be done
Superb vid! Could listen to you two talk all day, very interesting.
Thanks ever so much, Mr. Cawley and Harry. Long may you run.
A great video.
I remember LJK Setright writing how tyre choice was the most important factor in getting the balance just right between ride quality and handling. Very true.
Those Espada Mk1 wheels ( Technomagnesio ?) have to be the most beautiful sport wheel ever made.
Roger Hudson His new Honda Prelude in Car magazine?
LJK Setright from Car ?
His was the first section I read to see his thoughts on this & that in those days.
Nice to hear a mention of a Maserati 5000GT - we had a Black 5000GT will dig out photos as can't remember what year it was built by Allemano (one of only 21 or 22 produced by Allemano) bodied car (which we bought from a Dutch brothel owner in 1988 what a trip that was for me aged 22, sold in 1990 to a Swiss photographer) had the engine out of a Maserati 450S race car - and what an engine. Love this video Harry - super informative. Thank you!
Great hearing someone with real knowledge share their thoughts, although when Dougal first mentions his love of “unusual rubber equipment”, I thought I was on another channel altogether 😂
Thank you Mr. Harry. I must say I'm a bit green (envious) about your collection of fine autos but I also appreciate the often advice that you offer for the more modest car owner. Cheers to you.
This was great. I will take my tires much more seriously now! Thanks Harry.
Great video and very informative, Harry!
The guys at Longstone really know their stuff and their own videos online can really help zero-in on the proper tires for vintage and classic machines.
I am excited to get a new set of these Pirelli Collezione CN36 tires for my Series 2 Alfa Spider Veloce...and they look just great on your stunning Duetto!
I saw my first set of CN36’s on a beautiful Fulvia last summer at Road America and the vintage tread pattern looked brilliant on that car.
Well done episode...love your channel!
see if this video helps ruclips.net/video/SIFG3NmRQ8I/видео.html . However i made this film before Pirelli made the 185/70VR14 CN36 and there were not any proper tyres in that size. the best thing is to give us a ring 00441302711123
Fantastically informative video, Harry. Thank you.
Fantastic and informative. Thank you both!
Harry, you owning a vintage Spider helps me out in terms of information for my '71 GTV 1750. I'm rather overdue for replacing the tires on my GTV and that will be a spring 2021 project to celebrate the car's 50th year. I just wish that one of the tire makers would send me a complimentary set of tires...
Fascinating stuff get this guy back regularly 👍
That tire guy certainly knows his stuff. More from him please Harry. He's very good at communicating
Always learn so much watching your channel!!
This is the content I want to see. Top work Harry!
Can't wait to see you driving the Alfa. Very interesting video Harry, cheers.
Loved the calendars! Oh and the discussion on tyres as well :)
And I thought my tyre knowledge used to be good.... Dougal, you’re my hero! 🙌🏽
I found that genuinely fascinating, i learnt a bit about tires in college & had forgotten how interesting they can be. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on how the Countach & Spider drive after their tyre change.
Great vid. Also from 7:00 lovely explanation as to why when the power steering stops working on modern cars, the steering gets so heavy.
Proper geeky. Love it. I don't even own a classic car.
Amazing 😊💫 Harry actually makes tyres interesting!
Very enjoyable being the proverbial "Fly on the wall" in these info vids. Thanks.
Harry, that was fantastic. Would be great to have some in car footage of the difference those tyre choices have made.
Harry, great video. I would like to have one of those old rear Countach tire's.
My 1975 Ford Capri 3000 Ghia had Pirelli CN36 on it when new.
Would really love to get a set of the new ones!
loved it, very informative, another great vid!
This was VERY Welcome (and interesting) info. Thanks
What a fascinating insight into classic tyre life.
Kind of surprising that the MOT doesn't have a maximum allowable age of tyre. It's got to be a safety issue. I wouldn't want to drive on 10 year old tyres, that's for sure... As an aside, I remember as a teenager buying a 1972 MGB roadster with Pirelli Cinturatos of 155 SR14 size. Almost no grip, but fantastic ability to slide and steer with the throttle. Great fun, but a bit of grip would have been good too!
Can i suggest that the tyres on the car might have been old at the time? currently we have a 155R14 Michelin X for these very early MGB's. then MGB went on to fit 165HR14 Pirelli Cinturato, again we have these at Longstone Tyres ruclips.net/video/B0Ikivcujxs/видео.html
Nice. I’m a tyre freak (for want of a better word) too. The Alfa looks ‘way’ better on the retro tyres. Lovely collection. Thanks for the video.
Love these kind of videos, very interesting!
Bobster sad sack 😂
You can feel old tires for sure, just wait for rain. I was on a driving lessons safety parcours with an instructor. Went there with our 91 Toyota Supra, only anti lock brakes. Tires were ~8 years old Pirelli P6000 with lots of tread left. Instructor noticed, I anticipated it, too. But you still get surprised by how quickly the tires get overwhelmed from one moment to another. Since I don't do lots of kilometres on some of my cars I look more for performance, less for wear as the tires get too old before they wear down.
Dear Pirelli, no one of your calibre does a good rated tyre for Giugiaro Esprits. It's a small market but one gasping for years. Thanks Harry and Dougal 🍻
SOUP Classic Motoring What are deemed to be ‘the best of a bad lot’ current tyres for a G Turbo Esprit? I’m still driving around on ancient Good Years because they look so good.. I know the new ones won’t...
Amen! There is a huge market for 205/70/14 and 215/70/14. Mercedes uses this size for so many cars from the 60s/70s/80s and it's all junk.
I'm not up on the Turbo Esprit's Jaap because they wear 15's, Harry might be the man to ask what's on his, you'll find your answer on The Lotus Forums for sure and lots of owner feedback.
Another Esprit owner here crying out for a decent set of period correct tyres :)
THANK YOU. I have an '85 Turbo Esprit and my only option are Goodrich T/A Radials, which are not ideal. Up until a few years ago we used to be able to get Kumhos in the right size, but those weren't a great match either. Someone needs to step up here!
A little unexpectedly fascinating. The time flew by, I hope there is a sequel planned.
Thanks for your efforts.. great video
So cool.. I wish you were my dad - the best thing I ever saw in our garage was a Volvo 240L in 1970s bathroom brown.
This video features one of the most beautiful cars ever made, and more suede moccasins worn without socks than you can shake a stick at!
Great item Harry. Keep 'em up.
Very interesting indeed. It's fascinating to listen to people like Dougal who are authentic walking encyclopaedias.
Thank you Pedro. Its true. I am an anorak
Fantastic! I've been meaning to make a video about classic car tyres, now I don't have to, I can just send them here :)
Obviously a lot to learn about tires other than the fact they are round (or should be anyway).
Great video, very informative!
Funny thing is, that despite all the power and Technology you might get on a performance car. Unless you have the correct set of tyres, you will never be able to fully extract all the potential from that vehicle. Tyres , as mundane as they sound, are one of the most important factors to make a car drivable and safe and the only means of contact between you and the road
My old tech teacher used to remind us that the tyre is the most important part of the car. The engine sends power to the tyres, the brakes slow the wheels and tyres...but it's the tyre that actually makes the car go and stop. Without a good interface between wheel and road, nothing else works right.
Fascinating to listen too, cheers chaps
12 year old tires! 😱 Harry, go check all your tire date codes post haste!! (I'm reminded of Matt Farah's story of checking tire date codes at a Lamborghini event in Monterey IIRC...something like 6 of the 8 other cars all had super old tires and Matt pulled their owners aside for a little talking to! 😄)
That wasn't long enough, Harry! More Tire Talk, please.
Great video Harry!!
Best channel on youtube!, thanks harry
Colway remoulds is all I have to say always done me allright on the montego countryman
I don't have Countach problems but I have had to really go up one inch in diameter or width or both to get good rubber. I just got a 1952 Dodge M37 military truck and they have a 16" split rim, fortunately they still make the original NDT tires if you want or some more directed to maybe rural owners who still use them, there are fire departments etc.. that still use the trucks.
Yep we still have them at Longstone Tyres
another superb video
was wondering what tires to put on my 105, now i know great stuff!
I hope this helps ruclips.net/video/SIFG3NmRQ8I/видео.html
Very nice! A tire can make or break the car’s handling. Nothing like fresh rubber. Also aftermarket rims with the wrong offset or too small/big/wide can destroy the handling. OEM is best or a setup by a house tuner or die hard enthousiastist usually are an improvement.
My M553i bmw e28 tyers came from them very helpfull guys at longstone.
Timely! I'm just about to put new tires on my TR6, replacing 12 year old P6000s. Now I know what to tell my tire guy!
Great stuff very interesting.
Love this chap... one blue one pink sock... Excellent vid Harry. Cheers.
both socks are the same thickness so it doesn't mess up the balance of my anti lock brakes or mess up my diff.
Longstone Tyres - Vintage & Classic Car Tyres hahaha nice put there mate ! Enjoy life ! Cheers !
You should see what Dougal wears for barbecuing...!
Is that the Adam Brown? How You Doin?
interesting and informative, cheers
Harry's car collection is splendid. I collect nutcrackers because I can afford nutcrackers.
Hello Harry,
I would enjoy even a geeker video, namely I am curious about kinds of wear and damage that can occur in the tirea and how it is connected to car geometry, pressure, hard driving. Also are there any cracks on the tire that are considered normal after hard driving, how to inspect your tires etc.
I love Harry's African drums
BarryEssex theres gotta be a tune in there somewhere.
LMFAO, that's hilarious!
aFRICAN?
The 1971 Countach prototype was conceived around the new back then Cinturato tires, unfortunately the tires came into production late 70's, leaving the Countach with "bicycle wheels" and SAAB family car brakes.
Really enjoyed that, made me realise why my 911 is a bit uncomfortable
What do you find best for a 911?
COWN TASCHE. I love this man.
I like to learn something new every day - today is now covered ✅😎
Harry can even make a video on classic car tyres interesting, something I am never going to have to deal with but still interesting
Got to give Mr. Cawley credit too - he's clearly the guru in this one.
quigonjay9 Not to worry, if you buy a car , care for it and keep it long enough, it will become a classic!
How on earth did you take from my comment that I don't own a vehicle? I have owned the same MR2 for 13 years
quigonjay9 A bit of a misunderstanding. I did not mean to imply that you did not own any vehicles, merely that any car at some point will become a classic, and if you own it long enough, you might have to buy Classic tires to fit it. 😊
@@Alanc419 That's true! Bridgestone recently reissued the SF325 tyre for the now "classic" 1989 to 1997 Mazda MX-5!
informative! Like the new music too.
Saw a still picture of yours of the Countach with the doors open and the esprit; cant find it again! Please tweet it again thanks.
I use 225/50 front AD08r and 245/40 r888 rear on the Espada and 2:40 consistent around SEPANG F1...you should play around with tyres makes since THEY can give you to try.
Harry sure does love smacking some rubber lol
Would like to see the tire machine they are using with these expensive mag wheels.
Used to run CN36s on my car in high school. Picked them up used at the tire store and wore them out in a few weeks with e brake turns.
Terrific video.
tough life for sure Mr. Harry. :)
Harry's Garage May I please buy one of the used rear tires off of the Countach?
Watched this stoned! Was very enjoyable!
good form. learned a few things.
