SWING baby. That's why so many people have such a hard time with it. That and the non-standard technique he was famous for like open strings etc. When you listen to him compared to any other modern metal or hard rock player through the 80's, he was very 'loose' as in the timing was there, but it was secondary to notes on a different part of the beat. Listen to his solos, they are not 'nailing the timing' , but they find their way through it to the end. It's like he saw forward into the rhythm as to what he was doing, did it, and just knew it would work out. It's my personal opinion that DLR loved showtunes, and was influenced by band leaders and alweays wanted to be 'that guy' and developed a personality to match, weird as it is. EVH's father was a big band lover who played clarinet etc. He was exposed to this style and it's intricacies which shaped his style, and as EVH wrote so many of the songs and DLR collaborated, it's no wonder they ended up with such an amazing sound that literally was nothing anyone had heard. Just take Big Bad Bill. Not the most popular album, but imaging EVH solos all over that. It was probably discussed. Both EVH and DLR were huge egomaniacs in a different way, and eventually, unfortunately, it had to end. The DLR years are what I grew up on and jumped around my bedroom playing air guitar with at 12 years old. There was no comparison and they literally spoiled me for a lot of other music. I had Kiss albums, Deep Purple, etc....None of tsaw much play after I bought VH1.
No disrespect at all, but for the first time I didn't feel like a complete idiot cause I struggle so hard to master any of your content after you made a small mistake it really hit home. Not only do you carefully mimic a master and but also giving us tips on how we can also mimic some of the hardest content to get right. Thanks for all you do!
Hi Marty, one of my favorites and yours. I betcha used to play this live all the time. I got up at 12:30 pm and plugged in and saw your video. I bet my neighbors aren't too happy, I turned it down, lol. Peace 🕊️.
Where were you 30 years ago!😆 This is The sexiest guitar song Ever. If you don't look at your guitar, with an inappropriate look during this song, you're Not a guitarist... Not only showing how to play, but the Tone, and the little Eddie "tricks" (or genius). I've ordered a new up graded humbucker for my guitar, so I'm book marking this video. Because when it arrives and I put it in, this is the First song I'm cranking!!! I Love playing this song, but I struggle with it. I think from your break down, I see some ways I can plat it better, easier. Thanks for this one mate, Thanks... F' it, cranking this song right now, blowing the ear drums out...😁
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I surely appreciate your Chord diagrams. It is tough figuring out what actual chord shapes are being used on most Lessons posted by others
Thanks a bunch Marty! You make it look easy enough that even a dope like me might half-ass pull it off. P.S. I'm pretty solid on mowers and such if you need some help from Nawth Kerliner.
Thanks man! For your I e I run stereo with a Fractal AX8 into pro tools. It's the best and easiest/most consistent way for me to capture audio for my lessons. 😎🤟🏻
True! I often think Landee added chorus in the mix prior to Eddie's eventide years. The H3000 came out in 1986 I believe and that's around the time EVH really grew fond of it. If you listen to those Jam tapes of the 84 sessions Eddie was just using a dry Marshall. "Jape" added later as Eddie would say. 😎🤟🏻
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Maybe? Don did a lot of stuff that was responsible for "The tone" VH I 's room mic recordings proved to me Don was a major part of that tone. When i hear it on the room mic only it is nothing all that great. Just a good Marshall on ten sound but on the mixed version it sound magical though.
Great lesson Marty, I could never work this out at 14 years old and probably never will despite your amazing work. I didn’t realise Eddie had a Flying V. Your V sounds mega too! ❤
Thank you Marty always loved this song. I see a Power attenuator behind your right shoulder by Behringer, I own a Peavey 5150 combo and it’s very loud. Do you recommend this unit ? I’m thinking of getting this to put between the speaker to tame it. I love the amp collection as well 🤟🤟
Well, honestly it would work for sure. I use it mostly with my Plexi because you cannot get any gain out of it unless you crank it and it's as loud as a jet. The 5150 should be pretty gainy at low levels. But this little box would let you dial it back more for sure. Theyre quite cheap to. They color the sound a tad.
"I'm tuned to standard tuning today" THANKYOU!!! It always pisses me off when everyone gives EVH lessons a half-step lower. I know it's how he played, but I'm not sitting here comparing to to the album, I just need the positions. My main guitar is floyded, so lowering is a p.i.t.a., and my other is a Tele copy, which would be easy enough but.......
Hammer is from 5-6 on E string, then open D, then 3rd fret C bend to D then slid from 3 to 5. So you end up with a D note 3 ways...open, bent into and slid into! Pretty cool.
Eddie also used a V for "Hot for teacher", if I remember correctly. I think it was an original 58 Gibson V, one of the most expensive vintage electric guitars today. 😎
I've always liked this song. Probably the simplest lyrics in any song but the way Eddie played to them made this a classic in my opinion. Thanks Marty! Just a quick question. I have a squire strat I won and I can't play but want to dabble lol. Can I get some advice on a cheap set up to kinda play it? Thank you for any advice!
Marty I was wondering what your using for the distortion? I have a Fender Strat and a 65 Twin Reverb but I don't know how to play and I know zero about music.
@Ranch5150SkinWalker been trying to get a good sound threw my line aray pa. I put a hotone threw and sounds terrible but of cause threw the valve amp is great.but just doing a duet dont want to lug around a heavy valve amp. What about modellers like antie or jims 800 I carnt work it out and waisting like my last bucks thk
Can we just acknowledge for a minute how badass of a rhythm player Eddie was. For all his lead chops, his groove was unmatched.
Yes! 😎🤟🏻
Come on dude. Its been acknowledged for decades. The reason most players can't accurately play Ed's parts is they haven't got his sense of swing.

Thanks for revisiting this Marty. Love when you discuss the tones the artists use too.

You're very welcome!! Glad to show the imperfections man. It's all part of being a guitarist.
Thanks!
Thank you 🙏
Marty you do an awesome job. EVH is and will always be my MVP. When God handed out raw guitar talent Eddie got in line 5 times. R.I.P. EVH
Ths was great thank you so much Marty!
Thanks so much! I'm glad it helped you out!
You never fail to disappoint Marty - this song has the outro solo from hell!
Fantastic lesson! You have a way, my friend! Thank you for doing this!
Thanks! I appreciate it man. 😎🙏
I’ll get right on it 😳. Keep the lessons coming. Always good to revisit and hone the EVH
nice lesson and very impressed with your initial discussion of dynamics with the volume knob......not many REALLY get that.
Wow man, good stuff. One of my top fav =VH= songs!
Really nice break down of the song Marty there's some awesome cord voicing by Ed on this song nailed that tone as well 🤘
Thanks Marty your love and enthusiasm for these songs really shows through. 👍🎸

Man that V is awesome!!I had one back in late 80’s but being a teenager of course I traded it

I’ve got this one saved in my to learn playlist! I did kinda learn it years ago, but this lesson is really good. So thanks @Marty5150.
Best lessons around!
Thanks bro 😎

That “kinda drunk swagger” makes us fall in love with Eddie’s rhythm.
Wow, that tone sounds huge! Thanks for the lesson.
Great breakdown. Very easy to follow with a little bit history. Sweet Flying V.
Finally someone gets the intro correct....bravo.
One of the best VH riffs. Just some no-BS rock and roll.

Bad ass song! I’ve been waiting for you to cover this one… EVH is and was the original source! 😎🙏💯
Great song! Great job man! What about " Van Halen Dance the night away" guitar lesson? God bless you! João Carlos from Brazil
Minor correction! Eddie did not use chorus it was pitch shift/ detune from a Eventide H3000. Different from chorus but in that family of modulation.
True! I often think Landee added chorus in the mix prior to Eddie's eventide years. The H3000 came out in 1986 I believe and that's around the time EVH really grew fond of it. Thanks Marty 🤘
Love this riff
Great channel
Thanks for the support! 😎🎸
Thanks dude , you rock !!
You're welcome 🎸🙏
He danced with the intervals, yeah he did. Sounds good on a V, your's anyhow, nice.

Hi how are you rock on dude l am learning to play guitar basic power chords
Everyone started somewhere, keep rocking on!
Unchained, Drop Dead Legs, Hear About it Later -songs that foreshadowed Eddie’s songwriting explosion on 5150.

Luv it Thank you!

How does that Wiggy sound??
I like it man! It's powerful. It's sounds best with pedals in front and on the loop. Really pedal friendly.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker I hope to find one someday
@@davedecker1725 I found mine on marketplace in Baton Rouge and had it shipped from a dude. Lol.
✌️
Hey, sorry to disagree with you, but, when the D first hits, its actually G#, A, not A, C. Please review.
I can hear that. Kinda the footloose lick lol 😎🎸
Who's the girl in the thumbnail???? Talk about drop dead legs!!!
It would really help if you would actually play the riff before you explain your lesson
Month later he,s still talking
My first thought is "Shut up, and play UR guitar".
Just tap the right of the screen to advance 😂
Thanks, Captain Obvious.
Do the letters FO mean anything to you?
Just wondering 🤔
