I think the important thing is to hit the major elements and then have fun and make the song your own with you own style and flair, this goes for almost all songs...Great lesson my friend keep Rock'n😎🤘🎸
Great lesson and playing. Love that Les Paul and the song. Saw Van Halen back in '78 when they toured with Black Sabbath. Was wondering what strings you use on that?
You're welcome! I've been working on this tune for so long trying to get certain things down. It took me a while. Lol. I changed my mind so many times on parts. I finally decided this was it! 😎🤟🏻
Man Marty you out did yourself on this one probably one of your most detailed lessons I know some guys like the tab but I don't need it I can just see what your doing and my ear does the rest what a great lesson that Les Paul is my favorite guitar of yours super cool playing thanks much man 👏👍🤘
From Jeremy: To me that intro as well as the whole song is more iconic to me as a lifelong fan of Ed's! More so than anything else off that entire record. You knocked another video lesson out of the park again Marty!! Happy Holidays!!
Great dissection of this tune. One if my all time favorite VH songs. The guitar work in this tune just continues to evolve. So many surprises. Killer intro riff that blooms into an in your face smack. Tasty lines and a groove at the end that just swims in stank. His creativity with the main riff and the bends….for years I thought it was use of the whammy bar but not the case. Guy was a monster!!!! And I echo some other comments here. Your tone is spot on. Amazing how clean Eddie played but our ears perceived it as heavily distorted. You gotta really have facility to play with that tone. There’s no hiding.
Brilliant video Marty - always love the attention to detail you put in - much needed on the varied parts on this incredible tune.Thank you. Have a wonderful Christmas with your family and a very happy New Year too. All the best.
Hi Marty, you really showed how bloody good you really are at playing EVH's songs. Fantastic my man and have a wonderful Christmas with your family 💟. Peace 🕊️ Marty.
Hey Marty,Long time,no talkem to brother.Thankyou for covering this one.I been working on it for a while. You really answered some of my questions that I had.
I’m a big fan of the first 4 albums, probably because I love guitar and especially Ed’s guitar, But 1984 is awesome as a whole, I like that tone Marty Thanks again
Much appreciated bro. Agreed man, I read that on 1984 Eddie and Al sat in a room and cut all those basic tracks live sitting next to each other with a small baffle between them. Eds amp in the corner turned around with a 57 on it. 😎🎵🍺
Thank you for covering this! 👍 A minor criticism, the intro you showed a semitone downbend done twice, Eddie actually hits the whammy bar twice, pushing the bar down to do a fast semitone "dip".
I learned it a little bit differently, but my ears tell me this is the correct way to do it- nice job. One thing about that “faux whammy bend” (as I like to call it:) -I don’t recall (at least my ears don’t) hearing that technique in any earlier VH tunes before this song - unless I’m wrong. But it seems like he’s doing that in Cabo Wabo during the bridge right before goes back to repeating the intro riff(s) . Maybe up until him writing DDLs , it was some kind of a “happy accident”? Not sure , but (like everyone else) I always for sure thought it was a whammy bar . Regardless, it’s got to be one of the coolest riffs EVH ever wrote -which is saying A LOT! - at least to me. Anyways- great lesson, as always - and that tone is ridiculously good 👍!! Cheers!
That's one of my original songs that I abbreviated and made into an intro. (And added a DLR sample and Eddie lick just to fit the channel theme). 😎🎵🎵🤟🏻
Drop Dead Legs is my favorite song off of 1984 and one of my favorites of Van Halen as well. I think he did do it on a Gibson Les Paul. EVH always had amazing tone no matter what guitar he picked up.
I hear and play that last grove part open D then 2nd fret then 4th fret on the 1st string; then open A to 2nd fret back to open A then 5th fret on 2nd string. The next time do open D to 2nd fret to 3rd fret on 1st string and then open A to 2nd fret to open A to 3rd fret on second string. Try that to the groove rhythm repeating back and forth between those 2 changes.
I love your video but I think you are missing a riff in the turn around. It is right after the D before before what you calling the F dom 7. Please advise. I appreciate your videos!
With a small group of people at a sound check on 2004. You could yell out tunes and they'd play them (sometimes). He was kinda preoccupied on his cell phone and was a little toasty so bot a really personal experience but it was cool to be right there by him and able to communicate.
The Sexiest riff there is. Then, the run up the neck, with the slow little bends, creating all that tension. Then back into that smooth main riff that sounds so good it almost hurts... Yeah, I don't mind it...
@Ranch5150SkinWalker dude why you laugh...you was super slow on the change over. Almost like you hesitated cause you wasn't sure where the next cord was. Replay you video and watch the real one and tell me you didn't hesitate and key a few notes improperly in the way the chords don't go...you covered it up very well...but watch and see
I think the important thing is to hit the major elements and then have fun and make the song your own with you own style and flair, this goes for almost all songs...Great lesson my friend keep Rock'n😎🤘🎸
Loved the fact that you done the outro solo from hell too.....that's the part that usually stumps everybody - great job!
Thanks! 😎🎵🎵🎵🍺
Killer tune, killer lesson. Thank you Marty. My favorite tune off of 1984.
Such a great great guitar riff. Eddie had it all, riffs, solos, and most importantly songs!
There's a great vid of him playing this live in San Bernadino with DLR in 2015, and he plays it exactly how you just showed. You nailed it. Thx man.
Awesome!! Thanks man!
Great lesson Marty! Thanks for showing me this one!
You're welcome man! My pleasure. 😎
“Put some stank on it”. You’re the best Marty.
Thanks!
Thanks man! 😎🍺
Great lesson and playing. Love that Les Paul and the song. Saw Van Halen back in '78 when they toured with Black Sabbath. Was wondering what strings you use on that?

Holy crap Marty I guess I really never thought about it but wow that song does have a lot of parts congrats picking all those out you 🫵 Rock Marty!
Your tone is spot on! You should do a video on the equipment and settings to get that tone!
Thanks so much dude. 😎🤟🏻
This is perfect! Thanks for posting.
Thanks Marty! This is one my faves.... Top Jimmy rocks too! 🤘
Thanks this was cool! 😎
Hi Marty, you really showed how bloody good you really are at playing EVH's songs. Fantastic my man and have a wonderful Christmas with your family 💟. Peace 🕊️ Marty.
Thank you my friend. Happy holidays and Merry Christmas to you and your family! 😎☮️
Love this song one of my favorites. Edward said ode to ACDC back in Black, I think some of Edwards finest. Long live the king.
Dude I can hear it! Very cool indeed. Long live the King 😎🤟🏻🍺
Nice Stanley Ibanez my man! I have the black PS120 myself, also great playing!
Thanks, Marty - you rock 🤘
This song is a stumper. Thanks man
It's certainly not easy. Lots of weird stuff through the whole thing! And Eddie and Al play it like it's just another song. No big deal. 😩
Great job Marty! Above my pay grade though, still sounded killer, and we get to stare at that Murphy LP! Merry Christmas!

Great lesson Marty, thanks, gorgeous les paul, is that your Murphy lab?
Yeh this is my R9. Thanks man, I love it! 😻

Hell of a guitar you got there...stock LP?😊
🌳Incrível... muito bom.
Thankyou Marty oh yes
Beautiful les Paul what’s that color called she’s beautiful ♥️
I love your video but I think you are missing a riff in the turn around. It is right after the D before before what you calling the F dom 7. Please advise. I appreciate your videos!
I always wondered if EVH came up with the song title because it was in Drop D tuning.
I have wondered that before too 😂
Hey Marty you ever meet EVH????

I hear Alex's drumsticks while you're playing the intro. lol
GET THE FAR KON WITH IT !!!!!

Can you teach feelin'
Top Jimmy next!
Intro to DDL = same three chords as 316 intro
you can show me but...
Already started off wrong. Practice more before making these remakes
