      Back then the majority of being on TV was just about exposure. Right or Wrong, the programs didn't want to go through the expense of having a sound person, etc. at least, beyond what they would normally do, or even risking a bad performance. Two great examples of this are the Beastie Boys on American Bandstand where they broke the mics and Radiohead (can't remember which show) Johnny plays left handed, obviously "taking the piss" as they say...it was a different time, not justifying it, but it was different.
      Also, Nivarna terrified MTV execs by starting to play "Rape Me" before going into Teen Spirit at an awards show and Elvis Costello stopped a song live and told the audience he was going to play what he wanted on SNL after he was told not to...believe it or not, these were hugely controversal back then...

      You should contact Mustaine and tell him to his face that he misquoted himself in his book concerning his comments on Poland and Samuelson: “Both of them, particularly Chris, had joined the group with cynical intentions: they were jazz musicians to the core, hardly enamored of heavy metal, but saw Megadeth as an opportunity to escape the poverty and obscurity that most musicians endure.” - ‘A Heavy Metal Memoir’ (2011) by Dave Mustaine. Now go read a book…dumbass.

      @T OK first off.....You wanna roll like that cool! You are a btch made punk! And tell your Mom thanks! You see how stupid that is??? Have you ever watched a jazz fusion band? Do you know anything at all about music? SRV was an excellent blues guitarist. If he said he played jazz fusion?? I would bust out laughing!! Gar at no point ever displayed he was a fusion drummer. He played 4/4 at all times. He barely played fills. He was basic at best. Poland was unique. But, jazz fusion??... The guy plays the same licks over and over. He barely can hold his pick. He does pulloffs all the time. These 2 guys were fckin junkies. Who sold equipment to get a fix. You act as if Mustain hasn't said some stupid sht over the years. But, I guess he said it in his book. So it's gotta be true?? Stop being a fckin fan boy. And stop insulting people just because you disagree. It makes you look like a simp and low rent. Thanks.

    • @MicheleHell
      @MicheleHell 8 лет назад +5

      +Deehvad This was a real common strategy for "live" appearances by musical groups on TV back in the '60s and '70s and the German TV show went for it, too. The recorded track ensures that nothing will go seriously wrong, and that viewers can go buy the exact song they heard on TV. Sometimes (not here) there's a live vocal on top of a recorded instrumental track. In this case, everybody's faking their performance, but Gar's drumming comes through a little bit on the audio (mostly his snare and bass drum.) He's doing his best to take it easy and just fake it, but during the last 20 seconds or so he cuts loose a little bit and starts hitting the drums like he means it, ha ha.

Nick feels more robotic and technical. It’s like Dream Theater where Mike Portnoy had more feel and Mike Mangini is more technical. I almost always choose the person with more creativity and groove rather than technical ability.

    The original Line up of Megadeth was Mustaine, Ellefson, Dijon Carruthers on drums, Gred Handevidt on guitar.
    Then Gred and Dijon left, Kerry King and Lee Raush came in (Kerry was already in Slayer besides), then they changed and it was the Killing is My Business line-up, which was also Peace Sells' Line-up :).
    Before Rust In Peace, Megadeth changed a lot its Lineup.

    @J0SlAH I won't make this too long... just listen at the voice at the "if there's a new way, I'll be the first in line" and "Peace Sells, but who's buying" part... there are two voices at the same time, and nobody is doing chorus there... besides, nobody sounds like the studio version live... ;)

    I think Poland and Friedman were amazing guitarists, both more interesting than Broderick, and the fact they were interested in things outside metal was what made them interesting. The problem with Megadeth was never the line-up. It's that Mustaine hasn't been able to write anything approximating the sophistication of Rust, or even Countdown, since. The solos are there but the rhythm riffs just aren't.

      Hey there - curious if you're still on here, how you feel about his writing since this comment - particularly the new album this year - "The Sick, The Dying, and the Dead?" I was taken with how it takes so many of the rhythmic, modal, and melodic elements of the great Rust In Peace era and extrapolates them even further. Dense music that will take repeated listening to really digest I suspect, after my first listen today.

    This sounds really powerful, I think it’s because they lip synced it in the venue but played it super loud and then used the live recording of the studio track to get the crowd sounds. Could also be Gar actually playing the drums

      It was and still is quite hard to get all the instruments and vocals sounding well live in a tv studio. It was even harder back then because this kind of music was still something new and very few people knew how to treat it. That's also why you got horrible sounding metal records made by well known studios (especially true in the 70's, when the studio albums tend to sound less heavy, less guitar distortion, than the live versions).

    I see that the tradition of the cameraman failing to keep the camera on the guitarist who’s actually soloing dates back to the 80s.
