The thing about Poland I never realized before is that his shred is as musical and controlled as the slow stuff he plays. There's a flow to all of it, and it's all good. Most shredders have a tendency to sound like "okay here's the slow part, and now here's a fast part from my practice routine trickbook" - kind of uninspired and contrived. Chris plays more like a saxophone player, his solos take you somewhere interesting every time.

Listening to this video I'm stupefied to find similarities between them. I love Chris Poland's tone on the Rust in Piece demos. Poland has become an animal in his old age.

I used to play for anybody that listen to metal and blow their f****** minds every time. Even just a couple years ago I played it for some of my buddies who had their own kind of metal band going they were just f****** floored. I started new fans like almost 30 years later

It's funny how Jeff Young is always left out of these conversations. His tenure was short but impressive. For me, its Chris, Jeff, Marty, then the later guys are about even.
Wow it’s strange to hear them isolated like that, and even stranger to realize that a lot of their phrasing while doing a shred or fret run is quite similar! I never connected on how these two paralleled one another style-wise. Gotta give Chris the edge though for aggressive attack.💪🏻🤘🏻

@Kurapika Giovanna alright alright come on now haha let’s be real. Youthanasia is an amazing album so is rust so is peace sells. Everyone has their preference let’s all just stop arguing and enjoy megadeth
Both guitarists are awesome. Listen to Poland’s instrumental album, “Return to Metalopolis” and his work with the band “Damn the Machine”. Listen to Marty’s “Dragon’s Kiss”.
Poland is so underrated, wish he would have stay longer in Megadeth, or at least until after SFSGSW!, so we could have the Friedman/Menza line-up unchanged.
Chris is just a one of a kind, completely unique player that can't really be replaced. Like an amazing movie that no remake could ever top. Not sure how else to explain it. His hand injury was a blessing.
Yeah this is difficult for me to pick. When I met Marty he told be that a lot of his bending he got from Brian May and I can hear it now. Chris Poland has a great chromatic roll so to speak with vibrato at the end, Marty has a great middle eastern vibe with sad melody and excellent bends. I purchased the first Megadeth album when it came out at tower records and play guitar, been a fan for many years. What I will say about Poland and Marty is that they are very creative and don't just sound like some guy who was classically trained or went to MIT/GTI. Chris Broderick is flawless in replaying the solos of Poland and Friedman, but I don't care much for his original material.
Poland has a stunning legato technique and Marty has that vibrato that just grabs you!...I think Marty might be a little more melodic but they are both equally great in my book!
I prefer Friedman. Friedman has more melodic elements to his solos which make it memorable, where as Poland is not as much. He tends to just play fast runs of notes. I think making melodic solos takes more talent.
+Led Zeppelin Music 10:42. Poland has fast solos on the first two Megadeth albums because... It is thrash metal. Friedman has a more melodic sound in Megadeth, because RIP was a departure from the thrash metal genre, and moved towards a more progressive metal sound. But hey, to each his own.
There is melody aplenty but maybe not what you are used to hearing. That is not a personal criticism by the way, because although I have a very wide appreciation of music, it took me a long time to really unlock the melodic greatness within many Jazz influenced solos, from the likes of Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale and of course Chris Poland.
I idolised Marty's uniquely exotic playing as a teenager and still do, but I jumped into the crazy phrasing and unpredictable playing of Poland and just couldn't get enough. His ability to bend notes so fucking pitch perfect is astonishing, to the point that he sounds almost like the pitch-shift function on a keyboard, his microtonals especially are unrivalled. Chris hits bends that can emulate a floating trem, almost alien sounding shit, and all played effortlessly clean with complete control, orgasmic tone and feeling. Yeah, he's liquid fast too but all with consideration of the music. Seriously, go check his solo stuff, especially Chasing The Sun, that album is crammed full of amazing playing and an arse load of euphoric notes that will have you rewinding for more! Seriously underappreciated in the guitar world unfortunately.
Friedman is a more technical player for sure, picks his patterns and notes much more careful. Poland plays more off the cuff and feel....its hard to explain. Both are great, there is no better really because better is only an opinion unless we dig into technical reading etc. and I know Friedman is into that and is very diverse in his playing. You can't wrong with either one playing lead.
I think Kiko Loureiro has a great style that is somewhere between Friedman and Poland. It's really fantastic stuff. Dave is lucky to have always surrounded himself with guitar players that are so much better than him.
Yea, I agree! Kiko has played with many respectable players including Allan Holdsworth. Him and Chris Broderick have been the two best since Friedman and Poland.
I have seen Megadeth live with Broderick and with Kiko. Broderick is an amazingly accomplished player in his own right, but frankly his style didn't really fit Megadeth very well. He's much better in bands like Nevermore. Kiko, on the other hand, really seems to fit in well. Everything meshes. I don't know if you've seen them live lately, but they sound better now than they have in a very long time, which was quite a surprise to me.
Mainly because Broderick is a technical monster. (which does not mean Kiko is not an amazing player) Broderick is really more suitable with complicated progressive metal bands, whereas Kiko is fitting more melodic stuff. This is why Kiko is between Poland and Friedman. Friedman was so melodic and Poland was a jazz influenced legend. Kiko has some elements from both of them without question. But Chris Broderick is easily the most technical guitarist Megadeth ever had. Perhaps his style is generally not so juicy because he likes some godlike speed and accuracy with enough melody. At the end of the day, yeah, Kiko fits better for Megadeth. And as a Megadeth fan, I prefer Broderick as a lead guitarist because his style fits me lol
Kiko's the only best Megadeth lead guitarist since Poland and Friedman. Broderick isn't that good when it comes to musicality. Even Kirk Hammett is superior to Broderick when it comes to musicality.
Kiko loureiro and Chris Broderick were 2 of my top guitar players before they joined deth......Chris is classically trained and kiko is trained by a Brazilian jazzer
tru dat!I have never been a big Megadeth fan but I have caught myself picking a lot more upstrokes in my solos to play it cleaner after watching one of his solo videos!
Poland's last clip is unreal! Not hugely into the runs, but the bends are just screaming. I love Friedman, many of his solos are my all time favorites, and I've seen him live post MEGADETH, and he was amazing. I'm not a man of favorites, and don't believe guitar playing has a best, or better, at least when the guys are both at such a high level. I'm sure you could argue easily against this stance, but that is my thought.
They are both guitar geniuses, but Poland can make his guitar sing like nothing I have ever heard in my life!!! Very unique style and so smooth that he is like in a different dimension when he plays!
Polands style is like a schizophrenic. Not because it is chaotic per se, but because it is so unconventional. What really sticks out to me is his use of bends, and legato. He puts them in the most unpredictable places. His solo all through the intro of Good Mourning just perfectly sums him up. Its not overly technical. But learning to play that all the way through is a feat.
I've always thought of Friedman as the better player, but listening to those solo clips, and the improvised stuff... I actually think Chris is a much more versatile and unique player
Poland always has the same formulae. Bend, ultra fast descending lick with legato. Bend again and that's it. Friedman on the other hand is extremely versatile and unorthodox
These are the two that stand out to me most when I think of Megadeth. Always a bad ass at that spot but, some of them where very technically great but didn't bring much uniqueness to the table. Marty was probably my favorite but Poland was so unique! And I like what he's done more since leaving Megadeth.
@@akidk1499 Nah. Friedman has 2 great solo albums. Others are just too much wankery. There's a certain amount of guitarwank you can take. Want to hear a good solo album? One of the best guitaralbums ever created? Try Ol Drake's solo album Old Rake. Guitarist from Evile. An extremely versatile album.
I pick Poland because I admire his versatility, moving from jazz to blues to metal with such ease! In the end what does it for me is stylistic diversity.
Marty is amazing, but Poland is just so much more dynamic and smooth. I feel I have a better grasp of Marty's style in my own playing...I can't compare to Chris....lol. good video, zzzhuh

Chris Poland released Return To Metalopolis back in 1990. This to me was my favorite metal instrumental album throughout the 90s, 2K, and 10s, not necessarily in terms of the guitar chops, but mainly in the strength of the compositions and arrangements that by my taste MF has yet to even come close since Speed Metal Symphony.
Half of these people have never listened to Cacophony or Dragon's Kiss... or Scenes Friedman would have been a cult icon even if he didn't join Megadeth
It would be great to see them collab !! Marty Friedman is the reason I learned to play guitar. When I first met Marty, I was shaking and was trying hard not to cry. He just hugged me and talked with me. He surprised me with a pedal and signed it. To this day I have never played through it. It is in a special chest that I have. When I walked away I cried for twenty mins. I have talked with him a few times since. He always brings tears out of me. That must be why he remembers me. Marty is the coolest =)
Both are absolutely mind blowing and unique. The fact that Poland was on heroin for most of this probably make me give him the nod (get it...the nod...get it) in this contest. Another interesting fact. Friedman is so goddamn accurate. It is said that he never hit a single incorrect note live until the 34th show on the Youthanasia tour. That is 4 years into his career with Megadeth! Not a single mistake made live before that. Amazing!

It's funny how Jeff Young is always left out of these conversations. His tenure was short but impressive. For me, its Chris, Jeff, Marty, then the later guys are about even.
Both are so good! Once you reach that level does it even matter?
Wow it’s strange to hear them isolated like that, and even stranger to realize that a lot of their phrasing while doing a shred or fret run is quite similar! I never connected on how these two paralleled one another style-wise. Gotta give Chris the edge though for aggressive attack.💪🏻🤘🏻
Poland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MegaTone Silva yet you have Rust in Peacr as profile pic
The best album of megadeth is rust in peace.. And the guitarist is marty
For my yés
Herbert Espiritu not in the demo 💀
@@Yunggoat408 not in the full version
'Youthanasia' is so underrated among Megadeth albums..
Actually my favorite. Something about the tone! I don't know if its true but I heard it was recorded all together in one session, and not separate instruments in a sound booth!?
Wtf its no peace sells or rust or killings ..its a sell out album like the one before it.
Jason Clark bruh
@Kurapika Giovanna alright alright come on now haha let’s be real. Youthanasia is an amazing album so is rust so is peace sells. Everyone has their preference let’s all just stop arguing and enjoy megadeth
@Kurapika Giovanna S-o far S-o good S-o what is the best
Both guitarists are awesome. Listen to Poland’s instrumental album, “Return to Metalopolis” and his work with the band “Damn the Machine”.
Listen to Marty’s “Dragon’s Kiss”.
Poland is so underrated, wish he would have stay longer in Megadeth, or at least until after SFSGSW!, so we could have the Friedman/Menza line-up unchanged.
I guess it's hard to compare them since their styles are different. Poland has a jazz fusion background and Friedman has a neoclassical background.
Just listen to the work on System has failed...
Poland just improvised, Friedman is pure composition
Both improvise lmao Marty has stated he never composes nothing he plays (of course, based on licks and phrases he practices)
Marty improvises all the time too, Lucretia for example was 100% improvised
Poland’s legato and bends are just legendary. But Marty’s composition is just amazing, I can’t decide
Having watched both clips I now know for CERTAIN
That they hold their pinkies different when not in use
Both Poland and Friedman are such unique players. I can't really pick.
Chris is just a one of a kind, completely unique player that can't really be replaced. Like an amazing movie that no remake could ever top. Not sure how else to explain it. His hand injury was a blessing.
For me personally:
1. Friedman
2. Poland
Tough call. I love Marty's playing but Poland always had the soft spot in my heart as my favorite guitar player in Megadeth.
Chris Poland, he has the perfect bend pitch^^ and bloodthirsty speed runs
Poland!!!! He's a unbelievable complex badass.
Poland fits better but I think Marty is better (?) too hard to choose
Both of them are fucking WICKED... sounds awesome without the backing tracks too, you can hear them tear into every lick.... Thanks for sharing this!
I probably should of put a few with drum, bass, and lead guitar...
Thanks for watching tho.
Al Pitrelli is actually my favourite Megadeth guitarist. I really wish we could have heard more of him with Megadeth.
Chris's lead playing is smooth as silk...His band Damn the Machine has some cool material on it,sounds nothing like Megadeth...2 great players...
Poland has a stunning legato technique and Marty has that vibrato that just grabs you!...I think Marty might be a little more melodic but they are both equally great in my book!
Poland just has an Amazing Feel.
Wish we could cross pollinate them and have Marty's picking hand along with Polands left hand. Mind blown
yes chris improvises alot, as a jazz player would. lets not forget poland was a jazz player before megadeth. as was Grath also...
Gar.
lol my bad, busted haha
Poland's playing is just so fluid and sounds so good, the messed up finger man!! Changed it all.
Chris Friedman....Marty Poland....
This I can agree with
Dude, your comment just the most genuine and genius ever in this post... 😁😁😁
1: Marty Friedman.
2: Chris Poland.
3: Jeff Young.
4. Kerry King
Jeff young? Really?
Levi Green 😂 love that
IMO
1. POLAND
2. MARTY
3.LOUREIRO
I prefer Friedman.
Friedman has more melodic elements to his solos which make it memorable, where as Poland is not as much. He tends to just play fast runs of notes. I think making melodic solos takes more talent.
+Led Zeppelin Music
10:42.
Poland has fast solos on the first two Megadeth albums because... It is thrash metal.
Friedman has a more melodic sound in Megadeth, because RIP was a departure from the thrash metal genre, and moved towards a more progressive metal sound.
But hey, to each his own.
+zzzhuh I still love Poland though
There is melody aplenty but maybe not what you are used to hearing. That is not a personal criticism by the way, because although I have a very wide appreciation of music, it took me a long time to really unlock the melodic greatness within many Jazz influenced solos, from the likes of Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale and of course Chris Poland.
Fun fact: He wrote the Rust in Peace solos. Marty kinda made them his own.
@@TrondBie uhh.. sources, please? I have never heard Dave or Marty ever mention this.
Can listen to Poland all day
I idolised Marty's uniquely exotic playing as a teenager and still do, but I jumped into the crazy phrasing and unpredictable playing of Poland and just couldn't get enough.
Check out Friedman's Cacophony
Both are great. Also, whoever isolated the audio from those solos is a genius, congrats!
Poland has said himself there's some things he can't play because of not being able to bend his finger.
Their both better that Kirk 'nuff said!
kirks solo in justice for all album is quite impressive
DVN No he couldn't .
jimboishere11 lol, of course he could
Ryan Compton no he couldn't
Ryan Compton You must be joking. Obviously.
Both are incredible, they are just different. Which is very cool, both have unique sound.
Poland's just ripps! Amazing tone and bends, a very stylistic player.
Friedman is a monster also! Their by far the two best players!
Chris Poland all the way...
tru dat!I have never been a big Megadeth fan but I have caught myself picking a lot more upstrokes in my solos to play it cleaner after watching one of his solo videos!
Kirk Hammett is best
@@everythingme8931 kirk hammet is the Eric Clapton of metal.
@@everythingme8931 hahahaha kirk hammet🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@everythingme8931 wtf???😂🤣🤣
Both are so good. Finally people are embracing the idea that these two are the best.
Someone out there has rare footage of Chris and Marty playing Guitar 🎸 Hero together 😂
Chris is a jazzer; plays a lot of Coltrane-ish licks. Love it.
I love them both but Chris is fucking incredible and his solos are ingenious.
Marty adds some melody to solos but Chris adds some complexity to his solos.
I love them both
If you think Marty is simple
You probably have never heard Cacophony

Marty is unbeatable to every guitarist in the world except Jason.
And Chris
Loomis is a strong competition
They are both guitar geniuses, but Poland can make his guitar sing like nothing I have ever heard in my life!!! Very unique style and so smooth that he is like in a different dimension when he plays!
Polands style is like a schizophrenic. Not because it is chaotic per se, but because it is so unconventional. What really sticks out to me is his use of bends, and legato. He puts them in the most unpredictable places. His solo all through the intro of Good Mourning just perfectly sums him up. Its not overly technical. But learning to play that all the way through is a feat.
Marty seems more mechanical while Poland seems more organic.
If that makes sense.
It doesnt lmao. Marty isnt mechanical,he got feeling, emotions on his playing.
Can't take anything away from Poland but Marty plays some of the sickest arpeggios I've ever heard
Petition for a Marty Friedman/Chris Poland collab album
I’m not sure my brain could handle that
These are the two that stand out to me most when I think of Megadeth. Always a bad ass at that spot but, some of them where very technically great but didn't bring much uniqueness to the table. Marty was probably my favorite but Poland was so unique! And I like what he's done more since leaving Megadeth.
I've listened to both a lot over the years and for a while now it's more of martys playing that i'm following because it's so varied.
Umm, I'm going to have to say Marty, especially considering his solo work. the dude is on a whole mother level than what people call shred
Have you heard Chris' Return to Metalopolis? That album is solid gold.
@@11DNA11 Only difference is that While Poland has Chasing the Sun and Return to Metalopolis Friedman has like 8 great solo albums
@@akidk1499
Nah.
They are both badass but I would choose Chris Poland
Poland. Game over.

Both incredible, Chris is more underlooked and not as talked about which is a shame
No matter who you think is better, these guys are two of the most distinctive and talented shredders in the world.
I gotta go with Chris Poland, his 2 solo albums, OHM, and OHMphrey stuff is phenomenal. if I could have any guitar player's style, it would be his
Half of these people have never listened to Cacophony or Dragon's Kiss... or Scenes
Friedman would have been a cult icon even if he didn't join Megadeth
For me it has to be marty he just has so much feel I absolutely love his playing
Amazing!
