@@ArynCrinn 20 Jonbucks gets you a Squidbuck. 15 Squidbucks can be traded for a GW dinero. And I don't even want to tell you what 100 GW dineros gets you.
I appreciate the evenhanded review of these shades and the new contrast paints. However, the thing that made this video worth it for me was this. “Make regular painting a part of your routine and paint things that excite you. Improvements and fun will always follow.” Simple but valid truths.
when i used to get nuln oil and agarax earthshade, i would also get a bottle of lahmian medium for each and cut them 50/50. it resulted in exactly the effect you are getting from these new shades. so it looks like they are just selling you 50% of the pigment at 25% less volume for the same cost.
As for the effect of the new Nuln, I have a pot of 50/50 normal and gloss mix which apply the same as the New, including slight satin finish. If i thin it down with Contrast Medium, i get less shine.. if i thin with Lahmian Medium, i get the same thinned look as new Nuln. Conclusion: Ripoff.
Don't wait on a comment from Ninjon regarding this. He signed off his soul with the GW NDA, nothing ever coming out of his mouth can be considered un-biased and the truth anymore.
Nice, fair review of these paints. I hope you know how much it helps to see you using them. There's tons of videos from folks who also attended the event that are applying them one by one on a model or test piece. As much as that helps to see the individual color, it doesn't put the paints into a real world scenario. You mixed, layered, and have great examples of how to push these paints to another level. You didn't demonstrate just the colors, but how to use them as a new tool. I'm impressed with your use of shade over contrast. Especially Ballz Deep on the shield. Well done.
2:12 is that old - new correct? For nuln oil you had the new on the left and for agrax the left definitely looks the better and less splotchy on the flat areas.
Playing the devils advocate here, but if youd mix in another 6ml medium or water into the new nuln oil, youd end up with basically the same product. Considering how much darker the new formula is.
Yeah, and aside from the fact that it was more product I liked the size difference cause I could always pick out my shades because of the big bottle, now they will mix in with the contrasts more
People will still buy them though, despite Vallejo and Scale Colour being far superior people will still get on their knees for the Citadel range because they don’t know how to paint models without GW paints.
The moment I realized you made it, was when a random dude in a Warhammer store in Munich told me to check out your Night Lords video. You're international, babyyyy!

This is by far the best review of the new shades I have seen! They way you reflect and describe how the new shades work and responds really enables me to consider how it would affect my particular way of working and painting. Thank you so much!
Great video and an excellent review of these new paints - your detailed info helps understanding what they can and can’t do…and seeing your painted figure is also a great help. Thank you!
I'm loving it man. I have been a fan of Black Templar thinned with contrast medium instead of Nuln Oil. Really any contrast thinned with the medium does this. That looks like what this new shade is. So yup for me.
At this point, after seeing all of the other competing ranges come out in bottles, the decision to continue to produce flip top pots is entirely conscious and intended to produce more waste and thus generate more sales through premature replacement. It will never change.
If this paint release was “the future of painting or the new era” or whatever they advertised, imagine the party they’ll throw for themselves if they ever switch to droppers.
1:20 when he said what the GW pallet paper was, immediately drove to hobby lobby and found a Palette Paper Pad - 9" x 12" from Master Touch for $6.99. Waiting for them to go 50% during their monthly sales, cut the pad in half, long story short (80) 4.5" x 6" pallet paper for $4.25. God bless Ninjon!!
No shit man you have given me the inspiration to paint my plastic crack so many times now lol. Everytime I cbf painting I watch one of your vids and BOOM its painting time! Your a true legend my dude.
I remember first getting started and the law of the land was basically "base coat, wash, dry brush your base again, and maybe a dry brush highlight" to get you to 3 colors fast. How far we've come. I will miss the glaze/tinting that nuln oil skill in a bottle provided, it's such a normal part of my work flow but things change. That shield was radioactive bright and I'm impressed by how amazing it looks once all the washes are applied.
Smaller pots for the same price is something GW have been since the 90's. I know, i was painting minis for 2nd edition WH40k and Necromunda back then and saw GW shrink paint pot sizes and keep the same price. They also reduced the number of minis you got in blister packs and kept the same price. Some things never change...

Lovely thorough review again. Really appreciated that you go through the plusses and the minuses. I'm looking forward to picking some up when my existing ones run out. Beautiful finish on that Kruleboy.
Agreed, smaller pot/larger price= ridiculous. I'll only buy these when my current collection of washes finally run out, and I'm not using them near as often as I used to, further.
While we are all aware that GW politely asks RUclipsrs to say nice things about their products in exchange for early gifts, I think we can all agree that Ninjon has the best intros of all the mini-painting-youtubers.
Oof. That bit about spilling Nuln Oil hit home. Literally on the very first set of figures I ever painted I knocked over my pot of it and lost about two thirds all over my desk. From then on it became the main reason why I dislike GW's containers. Knock over a dropper bottle? No worries. Knock over a GW pot? Welp, there goes 4 bucks worth of paint.
I enjoy the thought of the shades working more like contrasts to stain less but you hit the nail on the head with the fact we lose the tinting capabilities with the new shades, maybe they we launch a new Glaze line in the future for that hole in their paint line now? But I'm not getting rid of my home made oil washes any time soon for these. When the announcent of "new revolution in painting" came out my guess was GW branded oils or enamels due to how most people are now phasing into them versus acrylic washes.
i make a custom shade with the grime and agrax. 3-1 makes an insainly good shade for pretty much anything that you want dirty AND give you deep recese lineing.
I have since forever (OK....40 years) always undercoated my figures with black, so making the change to white in order to try these techniques will be something new in itself.👍😉
