I accidentally skipped ahead to 2.25 and it has one of the funniest images ever - Seth smiling smugly while mouthing along with the phrase "the curse of blood", as if to say "yes child, didn't you know I am a middle aged crazy lady"?
I occasionally stumble upon this video every few months and watch it again... and I get chills EVERY time, especially towards the end. Brava Betty Buckley!!!
I think what happened with the trap door is she lifted it earlier, then that loud bang was it falling down by accident (judging by the shitty quality Broadway video). Also I love baby Linzi's accent in this show because she's so British that the accent's kinda weird.
Please do I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance.... Or just do the whole the show.... Also, whilst I obviously love Betty Buckley's Margaret, I adore Barbara Cook's voice and how it just feels like Margaret is in a totally different musical from the pop-inflected teen numbers. It really emphasises her character's isolation from the world. Both are just incredible performers and no way could I choose between them! Wish I could have seen them!
I did not see this show on Broadway, but I can tell you that the movie scared the crap out of me when I was younger. The composers definitely captured the spookiness melded with the insanity of the mother in the music. As always, well done, Seth!
I can't decide which song I like better. I go back and forth between Eve Was Weak and I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance. Betty is just phenomenal in both, as well as Linzi with the back and forth. I just love their voices working off each other. They complimented each other greatly. Such a shame the show didn't run longer. So many amazing songs, and equally great performances bringing them to life.
it's one of the greatest and most thoroughly terrifying vocal performances I've ever heard in a musical and it's such a shame there's no cast album of this production.
Also, Linzi Hateley is a goddess and was in the first musical I ever saw (as Narrator in Joseph). Saw London Road at the National over the summer and knew nothing about the show. Almost lost my shit when Linzi Hateley walked on! Obsessed!
@HollywoodHillsCookie I agree. I was there for every performance. I was a Bartender at the theater in my early NYC days. And I must say that the score was remarkable and Buckley was magic from beginning to end. Ironically, it may of in fact been her best work ever. The duet work between she and Hateley was gorgeous. I recall Buckley not begin the original choice for the Mother. It was Barbara Cook, who reportedly left siting "Religious Conflicts". It closed almost immediately.
Seth you are a legend. No one appreciates dear Evan Hansen as much as you do? No problem, just Watch Seth’s 30minute long video obsessing over Ben Platt. Now I’m doing this duet and I’m super excited and behold here’s Seth obsessing over it too!! Amazing. Wish we were friends.
I'm glad I'm finally hearing some of the music. Although, there is the book "Not Since Carrie." Maybe Broadway wasn't ready? Maybe. I propose a revival! :)
To all my fellow Betty Buckley fans: Betty's pet bird, an African Grey named Blue, died today. Please keep her in your prayers -- losing a pet is never easy.
I love this duo so much! The 1988 production didn’t have a lot going for it, but everything with Carrie and Margaret was just amazing. It’s a shame the revival lowered the octave for this song, I feel like that made it lose some of its intensity. Maybe if I ever get to direct this show, I can bring some of the old arrangements back, and it can be a sort of hybrid between the original and revival.
Ummm... so great, entertaining, lots of fun. And no denying the music is fantastic and the performance phenomenal. One question: What score do you have? I have both the Broadway and London scores and neither has harmony on that I won't let you go/Momma let me go bit... I'm fascinated to know where you got yours.
I am so glad that the great Seth Rudetsky is as obsessed with the history of this show as I am lol. Have you seen or at least heard the cast recording for the off Broadway revival in 2012? They kept the good songs, slightly reworked the ok songs, and got rid of the bad songs and replaced them with either new scenes of dialogue or new songs altogether. Retooled the script. Changed the staging. (A smaller more intimate stage works MUCH better for this show!)And dude, you have GOT to deconstruct both I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance AND When There's No One.
Quentin Barrentine And Eve was Weak is one of my two favorite songs from this show, but the other is Don’t Waste The Moon, didn’t the off Broadway version get rid of that one? I could listen to it all day!
Buckley owns this role. I hate how on the revival recording she doesn’t drop down the 5th on “burn YOU” mostly because now every amateur production copies the cast recording and it never works as well. Sometimes it better to sing what’s on the page and not try to copy what a cast recording does
@Bomberzone1745 well, TECHNICALLY, she didnt even need to have sex. even looking at someone and THINKING of sex (or, if youre in a particularly strict and overzealous sect, thinking of liking someone) was just as bad as sleeping with every person in town
Hi, Seth. To clarify my first post, I've gone online to see if a complete recording of CARRIE is available. Noticed that a soundboard recording with Barbara Cook is possibly available. Any idea? Thanks
They can never redo this show, because I think Betty's freakish singing voice was the only redeeming aspect of the show (apart from this song and "How Those Boys Could Dance," which both include Betty belting her face off).
betty: this show sucks, so im gonna blow everything out of the water.
I accidentally skipped ahead to 2.25 and it has one of the funniest images ever - Seth smiling smugly while mouthing along with the phrase "the curse of blood", as if to say "yes child, didn't you know I am a middle aged crazy lady"?
Betty Buckley. A legend. Astounding performance. Wow.
I occasionally stumble upon this video every few months and watch it again... and I get chills EVERY time, especially towards the end. Brava Betty Buckley!!!
"Crazy but amazing lyrics. Must have been so much to act!" Seth I thought the same thing.
Buckley when on fire is ferocious. A talent that never quite got the roles to truly shine. It was a breathtaking instrument deployed without fear
I think what happened with the trap door is she lifted it earlier, then that loud bang was it falling down by accident (judging by the shitty quality Broadway video). Also I love baby Linzi's accent in this show because she's so British that the accent's kinda weird.
Seth shoulda played the mother.
LMAO !!1
We can hope for a version someday when he will!
That's it, Seth, convert more people to the Carrie: The Musical score. I'd love to see your take on "Evening Prayers" or "I'm Not Alone."
Now, Seth, juxtapose this with Betty Buckley's beautiful, heart-wrenching "When There's No One" from the same show. Lovely.
absolutely breaks my heart
I love your lip syching. I love this show!
Thanks so much for sharing this. I've only heard a couple of songs from "Carrie"--both with Betty. Vocally amazing scene.
Some of the score is sheer brilliance it needs the full orchestral original version
Anthony Smith Even the weaker songs are better than the pedestrian vapid crap they put into the revival.
Please do I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance.... Or just do the whole the show....

the trap door fell as they went around it and had to be opened again, that was the first bang
YES!! I love that she had to re-open it!!
You, sir, are a national treasure. Thank you for all you do!
Agree!!
I love this song SO much...EPIC!
Seth, I love that song. I always have. But now I have a new appreciation for it. Thank you for sharing your passion for this track. You're amazing.
I'm only 24, but I discovered this musical a few months ago and "And Eve Was Weak" is so my favorite song from this! Go Betty Buckley!
I love your look at 8:38. It's the physical embodiment of "and THAT'S how it's done." I adore your deconstructions :)
I did not see this show on Broadway, but I can tell you that the movie scared the crap out of me when I was younger. The composers definitely captured the spookiness melded with the insanity of the mother in the music. As always, well done, Seth!

I feel like this is better than a cast album could have been.xoxox

hot damn that's good
The score for this show really is phenomenal. I'm glad it got a revival so more people could hear it.
EXCELLENT VIDEO! This song is incredible. There were definitely flaws with 'Carrie', huge ones, but there was so much potential too.
Seth!!! love listening to your Broadway radio show!!! and I love Carrie!
@HollywoodHillsCookie I agree. I was there for every performance. I was a Bartender at the theater in my early NYC days. WOW. What a powerful voice on this one. Everyone knows the mom was the best part of the movie, looks like she was the best part of the play too!

That was WONDERFUL!!!!!!!
I LOOOOVE Carrie!!! the first number "IN" is amazing! lol
Betty shouldve played this role again for the revival. XD
You do know they cut this song out of the revival, right? Horrible :-(
what? no they didn't
I’ve seen this video so many times over the past decade it’s crazy
I bet this is how Michelle Duggar raised her daughters.
I am pretty sure that there is an recording with Bety Buckley, but I am sure it is hard to come by
I'm glad I'm finally hearing some of the music. Although, there is the book "Not Since Carrie." Maybe Broadway wasn't ready? Maybe. I propose a revival! :)
.i just realised that Betty played miss collins in the original Carrie movie staring SIssy Spacek

Linzi wasn't from London! From the UK, yes, but from Birmingham. UK doesn't = London!!
in fairness, she does sound more southern than brummy 🤷♀️
buffy I’m from Birmingham (more so Wolverhampton) but I study MT in London and sound more southern
Ummm... so great, entertaining, lots of fun.
And no denying the music is fantastic and the performance phenomenal.

Liniz won an award for Carrie and Betty was nominated.

I need this done by City Center Encores……STAT🤷🏽♂️💯🤷🏽♂️
Doesn't Linzi kind of sound a bit like Judy Garland?
She does, especially when she has lower notes!
I wonder what his thoughts were on Marin’s performance.
I personally think the Barbara Cook version is too high for me. This one is my favorite.
Oh wow. I'm going to have to pick up the CD now.
This score sounds amazing! I hope something happens with the 2009 reading!
Carrie says, "let me go"
Margaret says, "I won't let you go"
I love the fact that Seth broke his ‘no bootlegs’ rule to do an Obsessed on this. Totally worth it though...

This is my study guide.
OMG! I'VE GOT TO HAVE THIS ALBUM!
It is called Pefection.
@ZanderMyLove Are we slow or what?
I am not ashamed to admit I am responsible for probably 89 of the views for this video.
I heard it....it was amazing and terrifying!
CARRIE is reopening again in the 2102 series...with Miss Mazzie and Sutton Foster.... Did you know?
They can never redo this show, because I think Betty's freakish singing voice was the only redeeming aspect of the show (apart from this song and "How Those Boys Could Dance," which both include Betty belting her face off).
I can't wait to hear Alice Ripley sing the Hell out of this song!
why am i here
that acting
Yeah, but then you had that terrible Debbie Allen choreography, you had high school studients dressed in togas and bondage leather.
This bootleg is glorious. Dream ooooon. DREAM OOOOOooooOooNnnn. So off key. GLORY!
I do not like the score at all. It was one of the main reasons it failed.
