I'm glad they're singing the original lyrics, they're much creepier and make Margaret's perverse religion seem even more sinister and twisted.
What changes did they make to the lyrics ? Ive only heard this version.
George Weasley In the revival they changed the order of the “i started crying” and “you’ve become satans bride, you’ve got jezebels pride” was changed

@@catfish1616 theres a few more changes i think, including "go to the cellar and pray" which is WAY more creepy/badass, although i must say the original version when margaret yells that line, around 1:30 in this version ruclips.net/video/v-65bgz4kN8/видео.html. I think it's interesting that they changed so much, even when the original lyrics were objectively better. My theory is that the original flopped so hard that they felt compared to change a lot of stuff. My personal favorite line that was tragically cut is in The Destruction (the song when carrie kills everyone). In the original, carrie does a little reprise of this song, saying "he will burn you he will burn you" etc, while she burns down the gymnasium, which is just too perfect. Sorry for the crazy long reply, in case you can't tell I feel super strongly about this haha
Julia is absolutely chilling in this. I would love to see her play Margaret in an actual production.

Alice (if I understand that comment right) theoretically was perfect for the role but it overall fell a little flat (not bad just nothing sensational in my opinion).

Holy cow, this is how the song was meant to be sung. Carrie and Margaret both meeting words at the instrumental crescendos, Julia's genuinely haunted voice as Margaret. Absolutely fantastic stuff.
this is so damn good but it feels really slow. sort of takes away from the intensity, but Julia is still slaying haha

(I'm guessing that's at two points in the song: once when it became clear that this was from Carrie, a famously bad musical.
The other point was when Caroline Bowman got off the stage. And there's just no 'serious' way to blend into the audience.
Besides, the "villain party" was a very lighthearted event, (judging from other videos, I wasn't there.) )
Except for the one part at the beginning, the way she sounded so deadpan while saying “You’re not to shower with the other girls, Carrie” was kind of funny.

I think it was the atmosphere. The earlier songs were light hearted and purposefully humorous.
The power behind those vocals is amazing, it’s almost like watching a physical fight
This musical is so underrated with how amazing the score is and how it shows the darker tones and sounds of gospel music, it’s terrifying and I get chills every time

People are laughing because this is a concert setting, and more of a comedic one at that ("Broadway villains party"). It's kinda weird to be suddenly thrown into this grim setting with such a powerful, highly emotional song. Naturally every audience tends to start laughing, if only out of nerves or the sheer surprise of seeing the actors start to actually perform the scene in front of their eyes. It's a pretty normal response which you see in almost every concert performance of "And Eve Was Weak". Don't blame them, you might have done the same lol

Phenomenal voices. Wow, that sluggish tempo did some damage. To be realistic, “And Eve Was Weak” requires staging to work. The abuse is choreography that the music splinters through. Simply standing there makes watching it awkward and weird. That may have been why there was laughter. People probably weren’t sure if it was parody. I’m all for CARRIE making appearances whenever she can, but “Evening Prayers” and “I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance” are far better choices for a concert setting. Even Linzi Hateley and Betty Buckley had trouble with their partially staged performance of “Eve” at Carnegie Hall.

Those crashing at chords at around 4:05 underscore the emotional torrent. Hooray to Brian Nash for the arrangement, the piano playing and Ms. Murney for cutting through vocally!

Edit: Also, i’m pretty sure people were laughing because Julia was being super slow and goofy in the beginning during the dialogue, other than that, idk.
All these years I've waited for Julia to sing this song and it has to be the slow-ass revival version. She still made it work better than anyone else since Buckley though.

Uuuugh so amazing. Julia was by far the best Elphaba.
I’ve watched this so many times in awe and still get goosebumps. Even though this isn’t a show they’ve put on such a performance I can feel the raw emotions and sense what they’re going through. These two are the only ones that can do it right, it’s just imperfectly perfect.
This song is so beautiful, the writing, the performance, everything about it. It sounds real, like a true struggle between two people. Absolutely beautifully written.

oh my god this really went to the depths of my soul that was so powerful
I love this performance; especially Julia: She let you know exactly what show you were watching, let you laugh for a second, and then stepped back into character until the last note was sung. Caroline; what can I say; very good beltress; I like in particular the moment where she holds the note on 'Mama', so that for a second Julia is singing a litany under her sustained power. Both of these women and their superb accompanist (I completely approve the change in tempo) made this scene work: If you ignore the laughter, this scene still slaps HARD, and that is why I keep coming back to it.
that "amen" at the end should have made her win a Tony

Ohh man. Julia would be so good if A) the tempo was correct B) the other actor was giving her something C) there was an orchestra. This is in no way a representative of her power and ability to be frightening. The belting is weak thanks to the under tempo accompanying piano.
Yes AGREED! I like the reinstatement of the original lyrics but the tempo needs to be waaaaayyyyy faster than this! Like in the original they're literally running around the stage while singing.

Wonderful quote from top performer Alice Ripley. Ripley went on to beautifully play Margret White in a Seattle theater production a couple years ago.

I know they were laughing at first, but if you watch the other songs, the atmosphere was purposefully lighthearted and humorous. And let's be honest Carrie isn't that famous, they probably thought it was along that same line.

This is absolutely phenomenal, but it's sad that it's one of two good songs in Carrie. None of the other songs are really memorable or interesting.

I disagree, I think it has a lot of great songs. The destruction for example, also the very first song captures teen angst so perfectly. The world according to Chris is at least fun. Overall I think the musical is terribly underrated due to its failing way back when, but some of the revivals are amazing.
The girl singing Carrie's part kinda reminds me of a young Shelley Duvall looks wise

Can you guys tell me what the song means because I don’t get it
carrie got her period and her mother believes she committed the sin of intercourse to get it (witch she didn’t) and locked her in a closet to “pray for forgiveness” because she thinks becoming a woman is a sin.
The show needed to take its key from And Eve Was Weak and embrace its horror roots. I saw the 1988 production and the tone was wildly inconsistent. All it needed was some tweaking in the staging and a couple of new songs, and it could have been a success instead of Broadway's most notorious flop.
