I think the cellar door on the floor makes thing a lot more terryifing. The off-Broadway Revival last year had a closet like the one in the movie/book... it just isn't the same.
this musical feels like two completely different scores. a chilling Gothic musical with what they give Margaret, and a pop-ish musical with the high school story line (not surprised, same composers as Footloose). the Margaret material was the best part of the show.
Of course it's bad, focus on your work and stop screwing around watching youtube lol I'd probably be the guy doing your work while you're giving standing ovations to Carrie the goddamn musical lol
The Broadway production was not perfect, but it had something that I often miss in the newer productions of Carrie - a big classic orchestra. Seriously, the orchestra makes the music sound more epic (and scary at Margaret's parts) than in the revival, it sounds great!!
God... just the pure... energy and fanaticism in this song is amazing. The LIFE that this actress (I'm sorry, I've forgot her name) brings to the role is stunning. This is on the level of "Hellfire" from Notre Dame (the Disney film of course) in terms of power and emotion and that was a song that quite literally sends shivers down my spine even now.
What a fantastic vocal. Horror musicals are tricky to pull off and at least in this moment it worked beautifully. This is terrifying in the best way possible.
The ONLY thing that made this show flop was the damn horrible stage decoration. I get that the producers tried to be artistic and original, but the mirrored box made no sense with the show.
Yeah the box wasn't my favorite thing in the world. I did thing some aspects made it cool like for the destruction when the glass pane came slamming down.
It was not the Producers fault for the horrible sets and costumes, it was The Director who was from England, and had no idea what the producers meant when they and the writers and composer told him think Grease, meets weeny todd, and he took Grease to mean Greece as a greek tragedy. its all on the Director for the look and the costumes of the original show. And i feel that if they had stayed within the world created by STEPHEN king, book and then the 1980's film it would have gone over much better than it did with critics.
I just now noticed the part of the scene where Carrie has her arms outstretched and her mother keeps pushing her away. It may just be that she's trying to keep her at arm's length, but it really looks more like Carrie is trying to hug her mother and is looking for comfort.
What the hell are you speaking of? This song is one of the most amazing pieces of writing I've ever heard in my life. How can you possibly not love it?
Pure talent. I must have listened to this at least a thousand times and it still gives me chills every single time! My only regret is not being old enough to see this done live! So grateful for this upload!!
everybody seems to blame the direction, but the things like lighting and the ends of scenes and things like that look really epic to me just sounds like the play was hard to put on, cos i swear it had a world class director?
Yes i agree with some of the directing, but he should have let the producers explain what they meant when they told him Grease not Greece, the white set and the costumes were horrible, and they should have looked like high school kids not like MTV dancers or wearing Greek togas, in the 1980's. its the Directors decision and he from what i understand of the making of it was horrible to work with and focused on the wrong parts of the show.
No matter how many times I listen to this, I'm just awestruck at the raw energy and power in Betty's voice. What great talent. I'd love to see this reworked/revived and brought around. I think in the right hands, this could be one of the biggest shows to hit Broadway ever.
That was fantastic. Much better than I had imagined it would be. I love that scene in the movie, and I had doubts it could be redone, especially in MUSICAL form... ahha
I wish Betty Buckley could have reprised her role as Margaret White in the revivial. I saw the original and I still remember her performance 24 years later. I saw the new production last weekend. Marin Mazzie was ok, not crazed enough and her voice lacked the power required.
Funny to see this comment 11 years later. I also saw the Carrie revival and was blown away. Marin was a goddess but they had to move songs so far down to stay in her chest/belt range, it didn’t have quite the same oomph as Buckley.
bellakiwi12 she’s an unbelievable actress but I hate her voice. I’m curious what others think though, maybe it’s just personal preference. Or maybe I’ve listened to Marin Mazzie too much haha cuz she’s the best motherly actress of all time imo
Aidan Price I wouldn’t say I hate her voice, but I get why you would. I’m not sure how she normally sounds, but in the show she sounded like a really well trained church singer. I know that voice. I heard it every Sunday growing up. Ultimately I think it mostly worked for the role, but it’s not a voice I’d want to listen outside of that show.
The only person that comes anywhere near Buckley is Debra Byrne in the failed australian revival, you can listen to it hear, its only a rehearsal track but still really powerful! carriemusicalaustralia(dot)tumblr(dot)com
I guess it's just a difference in opnion, I suppose. I just found it rather odd considering how this song really blew me away the first time I saw it. And I enjoyed most of the lyrics, although I agree to some point that half of it seemed like they were just writing filler.
@gejo1251 Marin Mazzie did a GREAT job. She has her own take on it and her voice is different from Betty's. She did a phenomenal job. Don't judge her unless you've actually SEEN what she does in person. The audio on YT doesn't do Marin's Mrs. White justice.
as much as the director fucked up this show and fucked over Linzi, you must admit that these women bring these characters to life so well. Linzi sounded legit terrified. (Fair though, because on opening night the woman who originally played Margaret almost got beheaded during evening prayers.)
Buckley. No other. Saw this in premiere before it closed in NY original cast. The audience all but rioted. To see a B'way show close with an angered audience was scarier than the premise of the show. Bringing in the likes of Debbie Allen ruined this show: the choreography, the lighting, the prom scene was a joke but Buckley and Hately were amazing -- they should have done it in chamber setting .

@gasparmarino75 I agree completely. I just missed the original (had tickets but it closed before I got to see it!) but have been a bit obsessed with the audio recording, particularly Betty's performance, all these years. Marin acted the part well but the vocals were extremely underwhelming. Very disappointed in that casting choice...
@TheBwayBoy Stephanie in anything would be amazing. I wish she was in more!!! the recording i have of her i love. she might be a little young though, in my mind.
That blocking was just terrible. I don't think the real problem here was with the music (I can't speak to the book), but the direction. It's just way too showy and grandiose. Carrie should be small an intimate, slowly building the pressure until you find yourself personally involved in the slaughter.
It was proposed to rival all other musicals at that time that had huge productions and orchestra set. So the thought of intimacy was thrown out and they went full out with this. it was a hot mess as a result!
@@jb7644 Small is also not exactly what Stratford and Broadway were ever about. Of course, when it was written, small shows were a rarity on Broadway anyway.

Totally agree. Especially the destruction.... the revival version has no tune to it, just background noise.
Part of that is because it was revived off-Broadway, so it would have had less of a budget for orchestra than a regular Broadway show.
