I think they should reinsert Carrie singing the "God has seen your sinning just beginning" verses, it's a nice, creepy echo of her mother's power now given to her in a newly sinister way that gives me the chills as Hateley sings it, almost giving the kids a chance to repent to "Pray for your salvation, from damnation", then stretching out the words "He Will Burn You!" into a perfect death sentence for the whole school.
It also gives it the "judgement day" that the book gives her character when she traps them in the school, and especially with the reverb/blinding silohuette

In a local version I saw, after the blood got dumped, they had Tommy yell "What the hell?" while the prom went in hysterics, and also a bit before when Carrie said "His name is Tommy Ross mother," the empty bucket fell on Tommy knocking him out (probably using cords or something to make it look like the bucket fell), with Carrie looking in shock at an unconscious Tommy when she said her line.

THE WHITE STAIRCASE. AHH. I did a confessed version of Carrie (we took elements from the original and revival productions) for speech competition and our directors would always talk about the infamous white staircase. I've seen photos, but this, this is something.
I agree with the consensus that the creative team of the 2012 production could have kept the "God has seem your sinning..."etc., however, I think it would have been best if, in the 2012 "The Destruction", she could have done the verse with "they will laugh at you, they will break your heart...... Watching you fall apart", the music break that's there, minus the buildup, THEN sung this version's "God has seen your sinning..."etc, THEN the small music break with a buildup, THEN sung the 2012 key of the final "Doesn't anybody ever get it right? Doesn't anybody think that I hear?" Because I think those two lines are the best and most powerful way to end it, the best final notes and words from Carrie as her absolute final message before she kills everyone.
I wish they had done that too! Both versions are so good but a mashup of both would just make the scene perfect :) Also I just wanted to say that I saw your version of Carrie and you did so well!! 🙂
I think the original score for this scene is WAY more engaging. The music for the 2012 destruction has no emotional punch to it, it barely even has a tune...it's just filler. This really feels like a musical SCORE. The brass entrance at 2:35 is full of fury, then the "doesn't anybody" melody returns, and he "pray for your salvation" melody coming back once everyone is dead is absolutely chilling. There was so much right here, that just needed to be polished.

@writingsketch they used the mirror box to emphisize that there is no possibal way out for the actors in the scean not even by running off stage which i think is a lot better than having a bunch of doors just slam shut
Personally, I think this version is better than the 2012 version. It's very haunting and a bit scare. It just gives the impression that something horrible is about to happen. Also, the lyrics. Not only amazing vocals from this girl but amazing acting. You put all those together you can here she's finally had enough, and now that she knows she has power, she's going to use it to literally take her metaphorical power back. The lazars were not needed, but the fact everything goes dark and all you can hear is screams with flashing lights and sparks is good enough. It leaves a lot to your imagination.
@DrNoYes9 Well right after the blood is poured a couple of the boys drag him up state and in the mirrors you can see him fighting to get to her (rather lamely)... Then once the destruction starts at the very beginning he can be seen up at the scrim that random falls, trying to get to Sue (You can actually her Sue cry 'Tommy look out' or 'get out'... Something like that) And then he is the last person Carrie kills, he crawls onto the platform at the end and she kills him
@Jimsteinman Ooooh, wait... Maybe it is Chris... The body frame does look kinda small... and now that I rewatch it... near the end (prior to Billy jumping onto the platform) i'm pretty sure Tommy and maybe Gardener are at the scrim with Sue and Carrie 'shoots' whoever the woman is and Tommy picks her up and heads of stage... But I think Carrie then 'shoots' him before he can make it
the original stephen king book is so good.... i personally didn't expect carrie to kill the kids how she did it O_O i like the use of the gauze :) but she's meant to be wearing a red dress :P (I know the blood shows up better on white though :? ) Linzi Hateley is so awesome and i think they should revive the show :D xx
@RadioCityChristmas And where exactly do you think they could get the insurance to have explosions in the audience? Do you have any idea how dangerous/how much of a liability that would be?
It's supposed to be Sue, the one who has her boyfriend ask Carrie to prom, but isn't allowed to go to prom after doing so because you had to have a date. And, yes, those are supposed to be the stairs of the school, but the bigger implication is that Carrie is collapsing the roof of the gym on the participants.
I still dont get the whole lazer thing, i know its supposed to be kinda like Carrie's power-ish thing but i didnt get the lazers, they seem off to me. Loved the god has seen your sinning part I think everyone agrees they shouldve kept it. I loved the way the "light bulbs" popped several times i just wish they wouldve had it look more like a gym and not just carrie on a platform
Not to be offensive but yall gotta give the 1988 version a break when it comes to comparing the effects with the 2012 revival, it was the 80's for crying out loud, technology still was improving then. Yes I agree they could've done something more " realistic " ( if you want to say ) to match carrie's telekinetic powers, but there were limited options for the effects at the time.
I do really love the singing, lyrics, and orchestration, but I'm not a fan of the over minimalistic stage or the rock concert effects. The revival, in my opinion, felt more personal with the lights going out and you really only see Carrie illuminated in red lighting. They build the tension beautiful since you just see the shadow of the bucket for a bit before you see it spill over and turning the lights red. You get a moment in her head as her thoughts are racing and she struggles to remain calm or wonders if she should let her powers run wild. Here, I know they had trouble with the mic and the blood dropping on her, but there is just no tension at all, and then when Carrie snaps, it feels unearned.
I get that this was the 80’s, but they figured out how to land a helicopter on stage in Miss Saigon. Yet somehow stringing a bucket of blood in the rafters so that it can be properly dumped on Carrie was impossible?? Having Chris and Billy just run on and throw it over her head just looks so silly and dumb. Thank goodness the revival and the new productions have corrected this!
4:03 What is that noise? Was this Barbara almost getting decapitated by the staircase?? I've always heard rumors about this. Some sources say that it happens right now (at 4:03) but some other sources say that it happened at a different time. Does anyone have any info?
The sound there is a lady sneeze/coughing. The near-decapitation happened during the set transition between "Don't Waste the Moon" and "Evening Prayers". The walls were moving & Barbara wasn't in her place and almost got it!
This has to be the most spectacularly awful set design I've seen in my life. Why was everything done in a giant mirrored box when realism would have been even more powerful? Like in "And Eve Was Weak" or the other songs in the White household? I now understand why this show flopped. The score is beautiful, the cast is talented, but there was no way to overcome such strange design.
The set and costumes alone killed this show. The jarring whiplash between the high school scenes and the Carrie/Margaret scenes, coupled with the script being so hacked to bits by the director that anyone in the audience unfamiliar with the book/movie had no idea what was even going on, buried it.
@writingsketch I feel like there are more reasons than that. Just for example, the fact that they never bothered to explain Carrie's powers, leaving everybody in the audience not familiar with the movie/book baffled.
@babeandandy I´m not sure but to me the one crawling on the platform after Billy looks like a female shape.. I think you´re right about Tommy and maybe Gardener, he seems to be trying to reach out to Sue before making his (failed) escape..
It is a metaphor for a staircase to heaven, also resonant with the number 'heaven' sung before the alma mater. In reality it might've been a school staircase or in front of the Whites bungalow.
Metaphorically, It is a stairway to heaven, seeing as how Carrie was going to die soon. But realistically, it is the staircase in front of the school entrance.

1:52 I liked that scene. That thing (don't know what it is, sorry) coming down representing Carrie closing the doors of the prom is a very nice touch, but there is a con though, people can barely see what's going on actually on "The Destruction".
Well it was the 80’s and the stuff to record was not that great but im sure people could see them if they went to the show live.
how did people think this was bad. HOW.
Have you see a video of the whole production?
@@loveandwar007 i have and its really not that bad i actually love it i felt like people where just doing too much it makes me mad that musicals like this close in 3 days and flop but nowadays we have musicals like mean girls and bad cinderella that get whole cast recordings😭
O my god wow.... ive watched the destruction a billion times and NEVER noticed any of thise.... I always wondered where Tommy dissappears to....
“Pray for your salvation”
Holy shoot she pulled a Margaret white.
What I think would have been great when she begins her revenge have the doors to the theatre shut when she stretches out her arms. And the God has seen ur sinning bit would have been so good in the 2012
That was also the creative team's idea as it was written in a working draft.
Strange as it seems if you speed it up, it sounds and looks really good.
Goes to show how much a pit can change things
reminds me of hello mary lou prom night 2 1987
Pray for your salvation!
I would like the sheet music! I am doing a condensed version of this for my senior direct! And I am using the 1988 Destruction rather then the 2012! I love both but the "He will burn you" part isn't in the revival! So if you could send it to me!
1:00 YAS
BITCH!!!!!! THAT STAIRCASE!!!!! IM S H A K E N
@DrNoYes9
Well right after the blood is poured a couple of the boys drag him up state and in the mirrors you can see him fighting to get to her (rather lamely)... Then once the destruction starts at the very beginning he can be seen up at the scrim that random falls, trying to get to Sue (You can actually her Sue cry 'Tommy look out' or 'get out'... Something like that) And then he is the last person Carrie kills, he crawls onto the platform at the end and she kills him
@Jimsteinman
Ooooh, wait...
But I think Carrie then 'shoots' him before he can make it
I don't understand why Carrie was raised on a lift. Is to give the allusion of Carrie rising off the floor?
So scary to imagine her doing that infront of me!!
It was supposed to represent Carrie on the stage, I think
the original stephen king book is so good.... i personally didn't expect carrie to kill the kids how she did it O_O
i like the use of the gauze :) but she's meant to be wearing a red dress :P (I know the blood shows up better on white though :? )
Linzi Hateley is so awesome and i think they should revive the show :D
xx
Wow
This gets so epic at 1:02
The music is as good as the climax of the prom scene in the movie, if not better omg
Wait why id this really good? Better than the revival
Because the original is actually amazing.
@@fatak5106 You guys are easily impressed by shiny Broadway magic tricks
I think the one crawling on the platform at the end is Chris...
im so happy Carrie Got rid of some of her bullies ! :D and the people who just plain ingored her , she did the right thing !
Linzi Hateley should've played Carrie's mother in the revival. She was done dirty in this show.
She explained in an interview that she has no interest in playing Margaret White because she "has always felt like a carrie"
ัthe lazer is supposed to comes out of Carrie's fingers. It represents both fire and Carrie's psychic power breaking through her.
@@rogermaglayo1325they stay attacking the 80s version effects but the revival had no effects at all except the projection 😭💀
Im guessing this is the 1980 version............................?
Rebekah Brown its actually the 1988 version the flop
Some regional production put it back. :)
@@this_Joe_Smith Oh okay! Thanks!
Where's Miss Gardner?
I have a question.
Is it beautiful to put Gregorian chants to the "he will burn you" parts and the rest to make it more sinister yet powerful?
It kind of looks like 1976 film
what happened to tommy??
Th1ag0 # You can just barely see Billy’s goons holding him back from getting to Carrie. Interesting choice, but gets lost in the chaotic staging.
@writingsketch I feel like there are more reasons than that. Just for example, the fact that they never bothered to explain Carrie's powers, leaving everybody in the audience not familiar with the movie/book baffled.
@blackberryjuice1 What exactly makes it "obvious" that the person was joking, and not simply speaking without thinking?
Dawg this is so creepy lol
@babeandandy
I´m not sure but to me the one crawling on the platform after Billy looks like a female shape.. I think you´re right about Tommy and maybe Gardener, he seems to be trying to reach out to Sue before making his (failed) escape..
Idk why every high school productions not add the part where Carrie says pray for salvation, or he will burn you
From what I can see, it is staged pretty well...
Can someone reply to this explaining the stairs part? Is she imagening herself in heaven or wut lol
