My daughter and I just watched Seth deconstruct songs from Annie. What an entertaining way to educate us about this classic and nostalgic piece. We were both cracking up but also taking notes on the art of vibrato musical theater-style.
the ANNIE cast album was playing on the living room stereo a lot when we were kids and even back then my sisters and I recognized how bright and strong Janine Ruane’s vocals were in the Smile number. It wasn’t a fluke because you can hear it on the Tony awards performance as well. Talented girl.
OMG! I'm obsessed too!! Laurie Beechman's parts have been my absolute favorites since I first heard that album back in 1977. Thanks for doing what you do Seth! Love it.
First of all the "Star to be" was my audition song forever.! Then I met Laurie and she told me I looked like her sister.. Random I know, but it was an amazing moment. I was offered Grace Farrell in a production of Annie, and turned it down because I wanted to do all the Laurie Beechman parts. yes, true story. So they gave me Star to be, and I understudied Grace.
WOW! Seth. I never realized that THIS was the album (while as a kid) I used to learn how to turn on and off or accentuate my vibrato - during the EXACT segments you are highlighting. I wasn't a fan of the musical - but LOVE the soundtrack. (Used to blast it when my folks were out. The poor neighbors. Bet they thought I would be blasting rock or metal. NOPE, I blasted Broadway. In short segments. OVER AND OVER. hahahhaha) THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE!!
It was definitely 3 bucks, 2 bags. I was in a school production that split "star to be" into 3 girls, all carrying little suitcases, and we had to change the line on opening night to 3 bags, 2 bucks, 1 me to make sense with the props. Even split into 3 it was a really nice part, and I got to sing the E.
I'm so fond of this video, it made me obsessed with the star-to-be solo in N.Y.C. --- I've learned the easiest way to find this song on Spotify is to type "N.Y.C" since there's a mini type forgetting the final period in the song title
I recently played Star-To-Be with a community theatre in my city and I wanted to do what Laurie Beechman did when she went up on “to N Y C ee” while the chorus went down on the “ooohs” but the music was written the opposite so I had to go down on that part while the chorus went up. Still such a fun solo to sing and I was happy I got to add some of my own flair to it.
This simple idea was probably one of the hardest shows to put together for the stage. The songs and the book are perfect. I saw the original, it was GREAT.
Seth, you are me when I was little. Or maybe I was you when we were both little... Any who... I used to play this album and "A Chorus Line" over and over and sing my favorite little/big parts. I thought I was the only one. Clearly not. So nice to have you deconstruct them for me 40 years later, lol! TY!!
Yes, you were - and are! - the only person who sings along to broadway cast albums. As for this, it's not a deconstruction of anything. It's Seth talking and talking and talking while playing - and replaying - the same few notes repeatedly. This is my first and last attempt to watch one of Seth's "performances." Unbelievably annoying.
did the show in the late 80s and yes was a guy playing star to be. Much to the musical director's dismay I would only do my laurie beechman impression back phrasing scoops and all.... fun fact flew to nyc about 2 years later with 2 bags and stayed 8 years!!!!
Judy Garland belted Ds on multiple occasions, and in one song shortly belted an E flat, but thats pretty much it before Barbra came along in Funny Girl.
I just discovered you - you're totally A.M.A.Z.I.N.G - I LOVE YOU!!!!!!! Just saw A Chorus Line at the London Palladium and somehow it led me to this catalogue of your genius!!
And all these many years I thought the lyric was, tomorrow a penthouse that's way up high, to light the way. I love finding out new things like that in lyrics.
My school's doing Annie right now, and while it's a great show, I was disappointed about my casting. This video, however, made me happy and proud of my Hooverville solo :)
It was Gretchen...Gretchen Schtartaby, from just outside Milwaukee. There was a whole other subplot introducing Addison Dewitt as her mentor and a little known jealousy duet with a character named Phoebe, but eventually Martin came to his senses. You're welcome.
Yeah for Laurie Beechman. NYC has always been my fave song from Annie even before discovering Laurie's solo cds at Amoeba. Still remember the day I got my morning paper to read her obit. :( Now whenever I'm in NYC on a Thursday I go to her theater for Broadway Sessions.
Seth, you do a hand flip at "Why not?" (9:54 ruclips.net/video/mYKY3s2K8PE/видео.html) And here is Sutton Foster doing that "Why not" hand flip: (1:04 ruclips.net/video/4Vei8DZBDP0/видео.html ) Amazing :)
He did do a separate deconstruct video for Andrea but he focused on her later recordings. It’s very much worth watching if you haven’t checked it out. The selections he highlighted are really great.
You sure know the B'way style, but you get in your way by stopping the recordings far too often preventing your persuasive opinions to be digested by your audience. I hope you are not on speed--why push so much?
I literally JUST got cast as “star to be” in a production of Annie and now I KNOW cannot live up to that lol

Seth, there is NO ONE in the world like you! Love your XM/Sirius radio show!
I used to imitate that liquid u sound in "knew I could steal" over and over again when singing along to this record as a kid! I'm dying. 😂😂😂

I literally used to play NYC over and over again to hear that solo!! Awesome to know other people were obsessed too!
"it wasn't until I got the vocal selections as a child" ... utterly fantastic!
My fist and favorite Broadway musical, always and forever Seth, you are my hero...nobody does what you do. Thank you!!
he is insane! I love him.

Seth is my spirit animal

Amazing! As often as I've listened to this album, as I listen to your insights I feel as if I'm hearing the show for the first time.

I wanna get drunk and talk show tunes with this guy!
Currently in the orchestra for a Dallas showing of this, doing percussion, NYC is by far my favorate to play and listen to over and over again.
Had to come back after Mr. Charnin's passing. God, I love this show! RIP
... Or as I called it as a child "The Red Album"... -Anybody?... Any Beatles fans offended? (Brilliant!! Haha!)
amazing and underrated songs

Samantha Barks does the meowing warm up too, there's a video or two on RUclips. I've tried it, it's amazing how well it works.

I was raised on musicals- played the heck out of that red album. 😊

Okay Seth’s riffs are incredible
Judy Garland belted Ds on multiple occasions, and in one song shortly belted an E flat, but thats pretty much it before Barbra came along in Funny Girl.
I love this Again. Seth, you missed your calling.
I just discovered you - you're totally A.M.A.Z.I.N.G - I LOVE YOU!!!!!!! Just saw A Chorus Line at the London Palladium and somehow it led me to this catalogue of your genius!!
His expressions with the orchestra are HILARIOUS at 8:30

And all these many years I thought the lyric was, tomorrow a penthouse that's way up high, to light the way. I love finding out new things like that in lyrics.

I cannot stand Annie, but Seth makes this HILARIOUS to watch.
It was Gretchen...Gretchen Schtartaby, from just outside Milwaukee. There was a whole other subplot introducing Addison Dewitt as her mentor and a little known jealousy duet with a character named Phoebe, but eventually Martin came to his senses. You're welcome.
sutton foster played star to be once aaa :)

@@hannahlynn8028 It's right here on youtube - it's amazing!

Are they still showing this on SiriusXM we just live in a crazy world 🌎
I spit out my water 2:50
Love all this. But can we also just discuss Sue Aldred, Star-to-Be, London cast album 1978... totally different and totally amazing too. Just sayin'.
Hi Seth, didn’t Barbara Joan Streisand belt as high in “ICGIFY Wholesale,” and /or “Funny Girl?”
Seth, you do a hand flip at "Why not?" (9:54 ruclips.net/video/mYKY3s2K8PE/видео.html)
And here is Sutton Foster doing that "Why not" hand flip: (1:04 ruclips.net/video/4Vei8DZBDP0/видео.html )
Amazing :)
Lol the red album
Love ya Seth but how can you “deconstruct Annie” and say nothing about any of Andrea McArdle’s parts? She was 12 or 13? Simply Mind-blowing.
You're totally right!!!! I guess I was planning on entire separate one on Andrea and just haven't done it yet, A.D.D-style!
He did do a separate deconstruct video for Andrea but he focused on her later recordings. It’s very much worth watching if you haven’t checked it out. The selections he highlighted are really great.

Do you really have to dissect it all ? Just enjoy it.
