static is a character that is sourly underrated...his animated series was bad ass and I've been reading titans Rebirth and hope he will hero up soon cause I have a soft spot for heroes with electric power
It's so dumb that toy sales dictate whether or not a show will have longevity. DC has canceled way too many great animated series, it's damn near unforgivable at this point
just because Static became popular only because of the TV show doesn't mean people who saw the TV show didn't become legitimate fans . Batman Beyond and Harley Quinn only became a thing BECAUSE of the DCAU
This was the one character that really got me into comics. It's was so refreshing to see a character on could relate to on a deep level. He is the main reason I really feel representation matters in all forms of media.
seems like Netflix doesn't use cgi, something that static needs to fly or do electricity.Might have to put it on commercial t.v like the did with the flash and supergirl.but I hear you though.
Bruh I feel so old. I remember back in 2000 with static shock premiere as I was a 5 year black kid in the hood my whole household mom dad bro sister sat and watched the premier. Man I miss 1999-2006 era of cartoons where you time machine
I just watched the different intros back to back. They got better and better each time. Sometimes I think we're all just nostalgic about past cartoons but when I look into it...they were totally better lol.
Of course there isn't much involving Static aside from the Show. DC DOES THIS WITH EVERY CHARACTER WHO WAS BETTER THAN THEIRS. They don't showcase ANYBODY, but Batman and Superman most of the time. It doesn't help that Static is a black hero either. He'd a great character, he and many others just get overshadowed by DC's most recognizable characters because of sales. We need heros like him, especially in the midst of all this racial turmoil going on nowadays. Minority kids need to grow up believing that despite their circumstances they can amount to more than slinging dope and gangbanging.
I agree. I feel like they didn't really try to include him or any other milestone characters in the DC comics because it's not their creation and they're characters of color. I wonder if he'd do better on marvel.
You mean Miles Morales (Ultimate Spider-man). Yeah it would be cool seeing them two hang out and have "black nerd moments" together. Black nerds exist.
They need to bring him back, especially with all what's going on today, racism, drugs and bullying. That's one of my main reasons I loved the show growing up, being a bad ass comic cartoon show and teaching modern lessons.
Frankly, I'm glad you covered Static. While his history is not as storied as some of your other topic, he's been a large force (particularly among POC fans) since the 90s.
People are weak, why dislike a video that is just facts. Even if you are not a Static Shock fan, at least you may learn something from watching. Keep up the great work, and don't let the haters get you down!
I LOVED Static Shock growing up. Even though I'm not black, I am brown and it was great seeing a coloured super hero, especially a teen. It's the same logic for having the Teen Titans. As I'm hoping to have a career in film, it would be awesome to have a Static Shock film, but I really wish they would bring him back into the DC landscape. The Justice League and Batman Beyond crossovers were amazing. He would be the best thing coming out of DC Rebirth
Corrections: 1) The "Quantum Juice" incident is actually called the "Big Bang" because all the bangers (gang members) got together finally settle territorial issues. The survivors of the Big Bang are called "bang babies" which Static is. 2) You completely over looked the "World's Collide" crossover event between Milestone and DC Comics, which was largely done of Static's popularity as character and this event also pre-dates the animated series. Static was at the time of the most popular non-Marvel/DC/Image characters out. 3) Dharma is NOT a Hardware character he is a Blood Syndicate character. 4) As some have already pointed out, the DCAU (DC Animated Universe) and what only turn out to be the show Static Shock began independently of one another. It was again because of Static's popularity that he was blended into the DCAU. 5) The proper way to refer to Milestone Comics universe is not the Milestone-verse but the Dakota-verse. It is called the Dakota-verse because all stories all and heroes are/were based in and around the city of Dakota. 6) The Static Shock relaunch suffered from a combination of poor writing and sloppy art. A symptom of one of the major issues with the New 52. Basically it was a feeble attempt by DC to try and cash in on nostalgia without doing ANY of the things that made Static compelling. 7) Many of the original creators of Milestone Comics announced in 2015 that Milestone Comics would be relaunched at SDCC and gave an update during a panel at SDCC this year. As it stands as the year is coming to a close there isn't have titles in development but I believe the intent is to have something out in the near future.
The Blerdist I think he just wanted to get it out to get it out, because everyone was asking and he probably didn't like the character so it was a throw away. Hopefully, all of the Milestone characters get a chance again.
The Blerdist very true my friend. I also wish there were more Caribbean (Puerto Rican, Dominican, Haitian, Cuban, etc.) mainstream characters. The only full Puerto Rican character I see is White Panther from Marvel but that's about it and she barely gets used. Let's see what happens in the coming years.
Felix Figueroa just speaks to how important the Dakota-verse is to comics overall diversity. It's to have White Tiger, Power Man, Ms. Marvel, etc but especially when Marvel is killing off the X-Men we're losing diversity at a major clip
How...how is he useless...*sigh* people yes...he was actually a 'new' hero with a decent story that people actually liked...then again I'm basing this off the animated series
One of my favorite black super heroes right next to Blade, Luke Cage, Misty Knight, Black Panther, and Black Lightening etc, but sucks he's underrated now in DC comics, hopefully he makes a big return, oh loved his tv series too.
Yo Big ROB! It would be so dope if You redid this static shock video for the younger generation! They need someone like static to look to and why not have the dopest comic book analyst introduce them to him! Especially with everything going on right now! I know I’d like to see some more static content ✊🏾
It would be cool to see him on The Flash. Maybe Barry has to travel to Virgil's hometown to address a recent "metahuman" outbreak caused by the gas. New hero, Static, could use some pointers from a more experienced hero he's only heard about. I think that would be really cool.
Originally in the animated series, he was not in the DC universe. he actually made Clark Kent Superman jokes. then The series was just folded in without explication
Static is way better then half of these character DC keeps pushing it gets really annoying when DC just push JUST mainstream characters when they have diverse cast aka Milestone universe, few other
You've got to remember that the show wasn't originally planned to be part of the DCAU. It wasn't for awhile that he had the crossover with Batman and Justice League and (and later Batman Beyond) and even further down the road until he made cameos on their shows.
Maybe now that black lightening is kicking ass, and the black panther movie coming out Friday; I hope we will get a static movie or show. Static shock was a great show. Especially the first season intro music. That was awesome sauce right there. That breakdown. If you guys haven't see the show, check it out!!!
+Steve Jones Gaming I know and I like his character but Static works better as an individual series (because it's on fox) , I think BL woulda worked really well with all the CW shows and like I said its confirmed for fox. Like I don't even know any BL villains they could use.

When this will all happen is not really certain as the old milestone creators are pretty busy from what I have heard. And in case anybody was interested, I think that the wildstorm universe may be getting the same treatment. But yeah, we may get more from static in the future \o/
Aw yesss, I loved the animated series :3 Neat video, even if there wasn't a lot to talk about, it was still interesting to learn more about his origins and how things worked out for his character. It's a shame they aren't doing much with him nowadays.
That was seriously one of my fave cartoons back in the day. I love this character. They need to bring him into the tv or film universe somewhere. And so maybe he's not a great solo character, he'd rock with one of the teams.
I really loved the Static Shock animated series. I don't have a whole lot of exposure to him outside of that, but the few appearances and solo stories he has had, I would check out.
Static in my opinion could be a great comic if it went back to what made it special covering social issues like the cartoon and comic. Here an idea for arc one: Virgil is still working at star labs when Richie get a jobs working for star labs because the gas gave him super intelligence (so you can bring back gear). They meet up, instantly become best friends again, and Virgil lets Richie stay with him at his home. Virgil is about to go out as static and Richie joins him as gear from the cartoon show. As the arc go on they both start to have feeling for each other but Virgil is unsure about whether he is gay or not because he still hold some of his homophobia from his earlier comics. While this is going on you bring back hotstreak from the older comic who at this point has gone crazy because his power are unstable. Virgil and Richie figure out hotstreak dying and try to save him. This causes hotstreak to changes his opinion expecting them not to care about his life. Hotstreak see that there is no way to stop him so he flys into the sky and let of all his energy dying just before he tells Virgil'' thank you I'm sorry for what I did to you and I cant waste the rest of my little time here ''. This makes Virgil learn a lesson that you shouldn't let your misunderstanding and fear run your life.At the end of the arc Virgil tells Richie he is gay and ask him to dinner which Richie agrees. I know some people don't like the idea of Virgil being gay but I think it would add a lot to his character. This would allow dc and milestone to print a book staring a gay relationship that are also a superhero team in comic which is something I feel dc lacks. This also give an interesting layer to Virgil and Richie relationship where you get there banter from the show but also some added scenes of them talking to each other seriously and supporting each during strong emotional moments. Then you could have arc that cover police brutality with Ebon and Commando X killing cops that are racist and Virgil have to decide how to handle the situation or an arc where Aquamaria is changing her appearance to be a man because she transgender but through her past crimes Virgil and Richie know she a woman and unknowingly make a jokes about it cause her to go crazy and they have to learn to understand what transgender people go through to get her to calm down. You could even bring back Richie father and have him not expect that his son is gay while you mix in a story about father son crime duo where the son is trying to get the father to stop being a criminal so they can live a normal life. I think Virgil is good character but he works great as young man trying to understand big social issue which can be hard in themselves to fully grasp.I hope dc and milestone do not give up on him and his later stories follow these trend.
Virgil isn't gay and Gear doesn't exist in the comics. Richie is based off of Rick Stone who does not have powers and does not know of Virgil's secret identity as Static. Frieda is the only who knows, besides another character who Virgil is unaware knows.
Wonder2win I know that Virgil ins't gay I'm saying they should try to move his character in that direction if they bring him back because it would give them a way to work in Rich Stone into the comic as Richie from the show, they could also get more coverage for the book with the headline which would hopefully encourage people to read it mabye, and allow him to cover more issues in society. I really like the static comic and show but I feel there best stories came when they gave Virgil real problems in society to deal with that had a superhero twist to them. The Richie Rick Stone thing is my fault I read the comic after the show and I just address them as the same character. I understand if you don't like the idea there a lot of crazy thing in that pitch like killing Hotstreak. At this point I think they gave up on Virgil but I thought it be fun to try and throw ideas out for a modern age static shock comic. Sorry if the typing is awful
Thanks for making this. I would swear I saw Static in a Marvel comic with Night Thrasher (another African American hero) in the 90s. It must have been part of that project you were talking about in the beginning. Yes, the animated series rocked. They should do more with him as a team player since I'm not sure how well a solo title would do.
DC has been killing it with their animated content for twenty five years. Batman the Animated Series(1992) kicked it all off, then came Superman the Animated Series(1996), then The New Batman Adventures(1997), after which came the ever popular Batman Beyond(1999), Static shock(2000) followed it up after which you get The Zeta Project(2001) (which is weird but still cool look it up) and then Justice League(2001) and Justice League unlimited (2004). All of those shows are great, with justice league unlimited being the capstone. Then in 2007 they start making direct to DVD movies, and those are (mostly) fantastic too! If only the DC cinematic universe would just copy some of that good old fashion DC animated universe charm/quality...think how wonderful it would be.
I only have a few things I want to say.1. The cartoon was canceled because of poor merchandise sales? That will always be a bad reason to cancel a show that's making you money. They did the same thing with Young Justice, I've read and been told.2. You might be right about people only caring about Static because of the animated series. But it was a great series. My dad had a one of the issues in his massive comic collection, and while it was a damaged issue I read it repeatedly. It was the issue about his origin.3. I didn't know that Vergil was meant to be like Peter. But being like one of the best isn't a bad thing, and might explain why I like the both characters.4. I should buy and read more comics, and while I have plenty of time, I don't got the money. That said, I've gonna add all the comics you listed here to my "comics to read list". So thank you for that.-Bye
Such a bummer. I loved his show as a kid and would love to share that character with my child as he grows up. But I'll admit that I barely noticed when it quit coming on due to all the other equally amazing shows I was watching at the time...
I wish that DC would have more faith in Static. He's a great character and superhero. Really tired of of the some of the mainline characters that they keep doing stories for.
Actually the show wasn't canceled because of low toy sales. It was because toy companies didn't make him in the first place. They didn't think he would sell because he was black. The only toy he had during the run of the show was one that came with a Subway kid's meal. Since then he's had one action figure announced a couple of years ago when they announced the release of the DC Rebirth and the return of Milestone Media, dubbed Milestone 2.0 with it.
static is a character that is sourly underrated...his animated series was bad ass and I've been reading titans Rebirth and hope he will hero up soon cause I have a soft spot for heroes with electric power
Check out young justice if you get the chance it's really good and Static Shock makes a cameo! I think the series is still on Netflix
Jellycar18 ive seen all of young justice and am pissed that Static was going to be made a main character in season 3 then it got canceled.
could have been a main character*
for all we know there could be a sizable time skip like between Season 1 and 2 that could move him off the team
his show puts a shock to you system.
I feel electric powers are not used as they should :/
It's so dumb that toy sales dictate whether or not a show will have longevity. DC has canceled way too many great animated series, it's damn near unforgivable at this point
Unfortunately, most television executives feel that cartoons only serve the purpose of selling either action figures or breakfast cereal.
Necessary Evil. Animated television is expensive, and revenue from ratings can't cover the cost of production by itself.
rickdeezy07dj they should take notes from the Japanese
I don't understand why DC doesn't just go with direct to video and live off their NetFlix/HULU contracts or DVD/BluRay sales with these series.
redxsage cause they are slow learners lol. Hopefully they will learn to use Netflix for this. No toys needed just ratings matter
just because Static became popular only because of the TV show doesn't mean people who saw the TV show didn't become legitimate fans . Batman Beyond and Harley Quinn only became a thing BECAUSE of the DCAU
this is why I dislike this video
Static is one of the best and most under utilized characters ever.....If they made a Static live action movie it would be incredible
^^ So true man
Devin Torres, I agree with you 100%! If the movie studio did it right, a Static Shock movie could make $500 million or more....
This was the one character that really got me into comics. It's was so refreshing to see a character on could relate to on a deep level. He is the main reason I really feel representation matters in all forms of media.
I think he could make a good netflix show with a good storyline
seems like Netflix doesn't use cgi, something that static needs to fly or do electricity.Might have to put it on commercial t.v like the did with the flash and supergirl.but I hear you though.
definitely
they could do it like they did Ajin (Demi human)
somebody please do that. . I would so watch it
Cellis313 I agree Netflix should pick this show up
Bruh I feel so old.
You gotta admit, though. The animated Static Shock was really cool.
yes, yes it was
Of course there isn't much involving Static aside from the Show. Keep Your Ring.
I agree. I feel like they didn't really try to include him or any other milestone characters in the DC comics because it's not their creation and they're characters of color. I wonder if he'd do better on marvel.
He'd do WAY better on Marvel & it'd be awesome to see him & teen spidey & see black panther be his mentor!
You mean Miles Morales (Ultimate Spider-man). Yeah it would be cool seeing them two hang out and have "black nerd moments" together. Black nerds exist.
That would be lovely, and it would appeal to us black nerds out there.
They need to bring him back, especially with all what's going on today, racism, drugs and bullying. That's one of my main reasons I loved the show growing up, being a bad ass comic cartoon show and teaching modern lessons.
He felt like a true DC hero. Watching him get starstruck by Batman or facing the Justice League he deserves credit for what he accomplished
Frankly, I'm glad you covered Static.
While his history is not as storied as some of your other topic, he's been a large force (particularly among POC fans) since the 90s.
He's definitely my 2 favorite DC hero... top 3 for sure.
1. Barry as the flash
2. Static
3. John Stewart as Green Lantern
People are weak, why dislike a video that is just facts. Even if you are not a Static Shock fan, at least you may learn something from watching. Keep up the great work, and don't let the haters get you down!
Static is so underrated as a character. It's a shame how DC ignores him for merchandise
static is one of the big reasons I want YJ season 3
Young justice season three and Red hood and the outlaws spinoff show. Would be sick.
waally13 would never happen but god damn would that be fantastic
kingofkings3651 It’s here so far he hasn’t showed up much
kingofkings3651 fast forward to 2019 and we have part1 of season3 completed waiting for part2 in june
I GOT SO HYPE WHEN I SAW THE TITLE, LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOO
I always loved Static as a kid but this video really made me love him more and now i wanna find all his comics. Great explanation
@comicsexplained I'm not telling you how to do what you do, but maybe you should seek out a consult before you record and post.
The Blerdist I think he just wanted to get it out to get it out, because everyone was asking and he probably didn't like the character so it was a throw away. Hopefully, all of the Milestone characters get a chance again.
Felix Figueroa I hear you and that may be true but if ppl are relying on you to provide accurate information at least try
Marvel, etc but especially when Marvel is killing off the X-Men we're losing diversity at a major clip
make a static shock explained video!!!!! ok I could not help my self
lol
He put a shock to my system as a kid.
wtf someone already disliked and it hasn't been 5 seconds yet
I was just thinking that. also... how can you dislike these videos.. it's just facts on a character lol..
haters gonna hate
maybe they disliked it because static shock is the single most useless character in all of comics. besides Typeface.
Don't be talking smack about Typeface.
Thanks Rob. I have slick been asking for this on every video lol. Glad you took the time out to do it. Much appreciated bro. Thank you
I love static shock he's so awesome and badass and really deserves another series in my book with his best friend richie aka gear
OMG brooo static shock is forever a legend in my childhood
I really enjoyed this video. Any plans on doing one on jubilee? I know it'll be real short though.
Is there a reason why likening the character based solely on his appearance in the dcau is a bad thing? The show was the shit
idk lately he has Been really moody
considering that the DCAU is the only reason harley quinn is a thing , i wouldn't think so
the show was SHITTY.
"SHITTY" is the word you meant to use.
Jon Baird how was it shitty?
that show was chasshhhhh monneeyy duude !1
Sweet! I love when these overlaps happen, I just watched comicstorian's origin on Static.
Yo Big ROB! It would be so dope if You redid this static shock video for the younger generation! They need someone like static to look to and why not have the dopest comic book analyst introduce them to him! Especially with everything going on right now! I know I’d like to see some more static content ✊🏾
It's a shame too. He was one of my favorite DC heroes
Static's original costume was way cooler than any of the other ones.
I was very excited as Static started to show up in Young Justice. The conversation between him and Black Lightning? 👏👍
Alright, now we just need a second Static video, focusing just on the animated series.
I've been waiting so long for you to do a Static video. THANK YOU!!!!
this video put a shock to my system
It would be cool to see him on The Flash. Maybe Barry has to travel to Virgil's hometown to address a recent "metahuman" outbreak caused by the gas. New hero, Static, could use some pointers from a more experienced hero he's only heard about. I think that would be really cool.
Thank you SO much for doing a video on Static! Do you think he'll find himself in the DCU as a TV show?
He may have only made a handful of appearances, but God danm we needed that static shock video
Originally in the animated series, he was not in the DC universe. he actually made Clark Kent Superman jokes. then The series was just folded in without explication
Yeah that's exactly what happened.
I didn't learn about him teaming up with other heroes until after the show was cancelled and I caught the reruns.
Static is way better then half of these character DC keeps pushing it gets really annoying when DC just push JUST mainstream characters when they have diverse cast aka Milestone universe, few other
They really need to bring back the tv show and make a new rebirth comic of him with the original writers.
thank you for not calling him Static Shock, It bugs me when people call him that
You've got to remember that the show wasn't originally planned to be part of the DCAU. It wasn't for awhile that he had the crossover with Batman and Justice League and (and later Batman Beyond) and even further down the road until he made cameos on their shows.
I believe that Miles (Spider-Man) is based on Static, you know the whole electric/venom blast and being spider-man thing.
Oh man I loved this show as a kid and I still love it
static is a really awesome hero.
I love Static Shock
They really should bring back static shock wws one of my favorite shows as a kid
Oh my god you actually did it
I have several of the Milestone ones. The original Static stories were the best. Thanks for the video.
I can't watch this for like an hour just wanted to say hell yes Rob you know how long we've waited for this
Maybe now that black lightening is kicking ass, and the black panther movie coming out Friday; I hope we will get a static movie or show. Static shock was a great show. Especially the first season intro music. That was awesome sauce right there. That breakdown. If you guys haven't see the show, check it out!!!
PUT A SHOCK TO YOUR SYSTEM!
You beat me to it!
Thank you!
poor static you were before your own time
I would rush home everyday after school to watch super hero static shock wo wo ! Criminals Got twisted !
Thanks for the video static shock was my jam back in the day
his name is just Static. Static Shock is the name of the show. Even in the show it's just Static
Ok Rob I'll stop asking for Static videos.
But thanks for making this video, even though there wasn't more on Static I still enjoyed the video.
My god. You actually did it. This put a shock to my system.
Reminds me of Black Lightning
SUPERHEROOOO STATIC SHOCK WHOHOOHOO
I was hoping this would be about static electricity!!!! :D
Tbh woulda been a much cooler show than Backlighting on FOX.
BL has his own rules and attitude
+Steve Jones Gaming I know and I like his character but Static works better as an individual series (because it's on fox) , I think BL woulda worked really well with all the CW shows and like I said its confirmed for fox.
Like I don't even know any BL villains they could use.
I think it would have worked better too. Because of the cartoon way more peopel know who Static is.
Why do you have to bring down BL in order to praise Static
they can have black lightning and static
PLEASE COVER MORE OF THE MILESTONE UNIVERSE, ICON, HARDWARE!!!!!!
Thanks for making a video on my second favorite Superhero :D, i subbed recently to your channel and I like it.
You are seriously my fav youtuber
the show was amazing. I used to love that show
DC are actually going to reprint some of the old milestone comics in tpb, there's already a listing for icon and rocket on amazon already for 2017. he should be in DC injustice 2 as DLC have his outfits be the DCAU, his first outfit, and new 52 outfit
Aw yesss, I loved the animated series :3 Neat video, even if there wasn't a lot to talk about, it was still interesting to learn more about his origins and how things worked out for his character. It's a shame they aren't doing much with him nowadays.
Static Shock is the fucking coolest.
Like he's personally one of my favorites.
thanks rob i always wondered what happened after the tv show and what his comic lineup was like
Someboy was like they should get Cheif Keef to play static hock in the Live action film. lmao
That's a shame, Static is a awesome character. I would totally read a run if they give him one.
That was seriously one of my fave cartoons back in the day. I love this character. They need to bring him into the tv or film universe somewhere. And so maybe he's not a great solo character, he'd rock with one of the teams.
One of the most underrated heroes ever!
Im so happy to see so many people like static shock I didnt know he was this popular!
mashing the like button before I Even watch this. been waiting for this for forever. Thank You.
I really loved the Static Shock animated series. I don't have a whole lot of exposure to him outside of that, but the few appearances and solo stories he has had, I would check out.
Yea, I need another Static video Rob
Static in my opinion could be a great comic if it went back to what made it special covering social issues like the cartoon and comic.

Static Shock was one of my favorite super heroes when I was younger! I hope they make a live action someday
Dude static is awesome... He really is under used a lot
The static shock 'toon was freaking awesome🤘🏿
Awesome video. Have you ever thought about doing a "Secret Invasion" vid?
DC NEEDS TO DO A STATIC SHOCK REBIRTH ALREADY
Static had plenty of toys. It was cancelled because of merchandise.
Static Shock sounds like a cross between Magneto and Storm with a bit of Spiderman attitude.
Thank you for doing this video!!!
Can you make a video about more Milestone characters.
I can hear that song now,
Super Hero, Static Shock, woot woot!
I grew up watching Static. regardless if his character wasn't huge in comics or sales, he's still great
Static Shock is one of my favorite comic book characters. And I loved the cartoon show.
