    I like it how Moon Knight's character has a split personality, and yet his comic has been rebooted so many times with his character being changed, sort of breaking that 4th wall.

      +Jonathan Luoto yeah you're right he's batman its just that he kills doesn't have as much technological gadgets has super powers is involved with some Egyptian god shit isn't really strong by himself isn't the same type of detective isn't smart has mental issues while batman really doesn't its just that his parents were killed and he fights crime so that it doesn't happen again and he is violent cuz he wants himself to be a symbol of fear unlike superman who is a symbol of hope also batman is less violent has A LOT of sideckicks and batman has a completely different colour scheme like the exact opposite but other than that they're the same since you know they both fight mainly in the dark and they're both vigilantes

    Everything is inspired by something or someone else. Batman was inspired by Zorro and The Shadow. The Hulk was inspired by the dichotomy between Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Moon Knight isn't a rip off of Batman. He may be inspired by Batman, but Batman doesn't kill people or dress up in bright colors.

    • @NavySharkz
      @NavySharkz 8 лет назад +4

      Batman has killed people. Bat fanboys always seem to forget that Bats used to carry a gun and kill people, it is a part of his history. Also, Bats killed plenty of people in BVS. :-D

    • @Cernunnnos
      @Cernunnnos 8 лет назад +1

      It's part of the history of the character, as in publication history. It's not part of any of the existing canons.
      The whole gun thing was dropped almost immediately. And the stories it featured in aren't considered canon.

    • @NavySharkz
      @NavySharkz 8 лет назад

      jonnyt8524 They are a part of his origin, how in the world can't they be considered canon?!?

    • @SpoonDude
      @SpoonDude 8 лет назад

      Reboots, retcons, new earths and continuity. The Golden age is a different earth than the main DC continuity. The New 52 redid Batman's first year, and prior to that Frank Miller's Year One is part of continuity. In those two stories Batman does not kill. So Batman's murderous spree in his first appearances are not canon, and haven't been since the Silver Age.

    Moon Knight is kind of an acquired taste. The way I see it, all the various reboots are actually Marc trying to deal with all the trauma in his life, and he rewrites his memories to cope.
    The way I've always described him to my friends is what if Batman didn't have parent-issues and instead had multiple personalities. Someone mentioned Taskmaster in another post. Taskmaster has said he can fight like Moonknight but refuses to, because Moonknight would rather take a punch to score a knockout than dodge out of the way. The Charlie Huston run goes into this a little. That's series did an awesome job highlighting his mental problems and destructive nature.
    A character in that arc called The Profile was introduced as well. Basically he can look at someone and know all about them: fears, desires, secrets, etc. He could read Marc Spector but in the guise of Moon Knight made him freak out, implying that in the personality of Moon Knight, Spector is a drastically different person.
    Moon Knight has a surprisingly amount of depth to him once you get past the Batman connection. He's also really unpredictable so you never know where his story will take you. Plus, he one of the few rare detectives in Marvel, whereas DC is chock full of detectives.

    I never understood the love of Moon Knight until sitting down and reading the 2006 run and never stopped. It's fair to compare generalities with characters, but it's the nuances separating the heroes/villains making the difference. If we only define heroes by abilities, you'll have a hard time enjoying any character. How many characters have super strength, speed, and toughness? But if I asked to guess the one I was thinking of, you would ask what was the story behind the character to guess. Being said I love Mooney; I like Batman but what I like about Batman, I can find in Mooney. Moreover I respect Marc over Bruce. He's self-made, a damaged hero, a broken person, and even with a moon god as a patron, an underdog. Mooney could be Batman? Batman could never be Mooney. WISH I could write some Moon Knight.

    • @nicktubara
      @nicktubara 4 года назад +11

      This comment 👍 i totally understood all of that. While Bruce is wealthy due to his parents' financial growth, Marc earned his through his years as a merc and that's where the fans see the difference and whom can appreciate a character that isn't born of money and luxury. Seeing as how you defined moon knight so well i no doubt you can make moon knight even cooler and appealing so make it a reality. ☺

    Given his willingness to kill, and the Konshu/powers angle, I'd say it's less that he's a ripoff of Batman, and more AzBats (Jean-Paul Valley) was a ripoff of Moon Knight.

And yeah, he's a lot like batman, but there's also always this underlying supernatural feel to his books and although his purpose is to serve Konshu, they're always arguing and at each other's throats in Marc's head. The Egyptian overtones to his character including the fact that he may or may not be possessed by Khonsu as an explanation for his disorder and his decision to become a hero weigh heavily over the character. Nothing is concrete or solid with this character which creates interest in not only the mystery but also how he perceives the mystery. Moon Knight is easily one of the most intriguing characters in Marvel’s gallery and really draws little comparison to Batman if any. Given your extensive knowledge on the character I would assume you’d have extensive understanding but that does not appear to be the case

  • @nmmintz

    I'm not sure I would agree that he's Marvel's version of Batman. Batman has some pretty clear motivations and ethics (although he may have strayed from time to time). Moon Knight seems to mired in a lot more confusion in terms of who he is and why he's doing what he does. It probably resonates with people because we're all trying to figure ourselves out.

  • @the1niddo
    @the1niddo 8 лет назад +3

    Moon Knight is certainly my favourite hero. He just clicks well for me. The Marvel NOW run was particularly great, both in art design and storytelling. Another thing that clicks is how he'll take on insane odds simply because he has to. Like when he took on Count Nerferia. Or even when broken, he took on Taskmaster. Or when he beat up Deadpool so badly that Deadpool had to be hospitalized and give up on a mission.
    As for the constant Batman comparison, this is the best differentiating factor between the two I've seen explained:
    "Huston accepted that the two characters had their similarities, but went on to contrast the two by noting in particular differences in origin, motives, and personality. "Bruce Wayne", he said, "fights crime to avenge the murders of his parents", whereas Moon Knight "beats up whoever has it coming because he believes he is the avatar of the Egyptian god of vengeance and it helps him to feel better about all the people he killed when he was a mercenary." Thus, while Batman is motivated by vengeance for wrong done to his parents, Marc Spector is motivated by vengeance as a concept. Huston further notes that Bruce Wayne, Batman's alter ego, takes on other personalities merely to aid in his fight. However, Moon Knight has three alter egos which aid him as much in dealing with personal demons as fighting law-breakers, and which have taken a further psychological toll of causing dissociative identity disorder."
    I do agree that he's been all over the place design wise... but he's not Batman. Similarities to be sure, but if you wrote Batman like Moon Knight you'd have people rioting the streets.
    Or'd you'd have Batman from BvS. Either or.

    This is one of those comic books that I wish they could figure out what they want to do with the character. Very similar to Captain Marvel in that vain.
    Their is something about Moon Knight that I find interesting and not the run of the mill "super hero" standard of character style creations. It'll be great once they get someone who can define the direction of the character just like what happened to Deadpool.

    Lol, I can understand why Rob doesn't like Moon Knight. Me personally, I get he's Marvel's version of Batman, but that doesn't mean he can't be unique. What I love about Moon Knight is the fact that HE IS CRAZY. Due to that, you get a superhero that can make for some really interesting and awesome stories that you wouldn't really find in a Batman comic. In any case, I hope they make a Netflix series that's sort of like Fight Club, with an unreliable narrator and a kickass super hero :)

    Moon Knight is one of those Marvel characters that people are drawn to because of the character design.
    Much like Ghost Rider, it's the look that hooks people.
    In reading the various books, you can see the Batman comparisons are more about the silhouette of the character. The artistic choice of placing the character in darkness and shadow, the classic dramatic poses, etc.
    If anything, Moon Knight is the polar opposite of Batman, probably because the writers often knew the product they were producing was going to draw the comparison.

    i've been reading moon knight since 90/91 and this guy is no batman or marvel's batman at that. you could lazily say the same about daredevil. he has a few similarities to the bat but is a different character all his own and arguably just as complex. i like what i've read of him since grade school and though i'm highly enjoying the current run started by lemire, i must say that the previous run by ellis was by far the most impressive and just batshit crazy awesome with a varied range of content. love you your videos rob, hate that youtube tried putting the screws to you not long ago but i just disagree about the batman comment. he has more in common with early spawn imo(issues 1-50). keep up the awesome work dude. I honestly can't wait for the Disney+ Moon Knight series. I hope they use Jeff Lemire's run. Like, I can just imagine the whole show feeling almost like Mr. Robot, but on a more supernatural level, while simultaneously toying with the idea that Marc is just a crazy guy who developed multiple personalities due to all of his trauma i.e his near death experience, having to kill his brother, and being a soldier, and later a mercenary.
    I hope Shia Labeouf is casted as him, if I'm being honest. I feel he could really bring something to the role, not to mention that he's played a soldier dealing with ptsd, he's played a cab driver, and I could see him pulling off the role of a millionaire who is just slightly unhinged underneath his cool persona. Oh, and let's not forget that he also has to be convincing when it comes to mental instability. Shia is obviously more stable now than he was before (especially now that he's patched things up with his father) but at the end of the day, he's been there. The mental instability, I mean. This could very well be his, "Iron Man" role.
    Plus, who wouldn't want to see a reunion between Shia Labeouf and Keanu Reeves, with Keanu as Ghost Rider, and Shia as Moon Knight? I mean, come on.

    Thank you! I learned a lot about the character... I am a little obcessed with the Moon Knight and I think it is because of the costume.... He definately instills fear in his opponents, much like Batman. The difference is the fanatic obcession with Khonshu and the moon. The religious fervor for vengence and justice makes his need to be a hero almost as justified as Bruce Wayne's.
    Someone with too much faith running aound at night in white pajamas saying he is the fist of an ancient Egyptian god dealing justice as he seem fit? Interesting character to me... hope Netflix gives him some love. Thanks again.

    Reading Moon Knight's information on various sites, I get the idea that he is a superhero take of pulp characters like the Shadow and the Spider with a bit of bat or owl crashing through a window inspiration. Like the original Shadow's stories, Moon Knight assume a disguise of a wealthy socialite to mask his career as vigilante and uses a network of allies and informants in the course of his crime fighting activities.Problem with Moon Knight is Marvel really don't know what to do with a pulp character, they are used to the mutants and mutates that a hero like Moon Knight has to be a homicidal vigilante like the Punisher.

    When I was a kid, I loved Moon Knight. He really does come across as Marvel's Batman....But there has always been a different flavor to him. In some ways, he's a more realistic version of Batman. The whole multiple personality thing gives him a strange angle. It's like I've always said with Batman...Batman is the real person and Bruce is the secret identity. But I don't think most writers catch that. Moon Knight's writers caught that, for the most part, and that made his stories always have a really weird edge. I hated when Marvel did that direct sales crap and mando paper "upgrade" in the 80's. Moon Knight and Micronauts were two of my favorite titles and they just got lost in the shuffle. To this day I've not finished reading those runs because there were no specialty stores near me. Maybe something I need to put on my to-do list.

      That is what makes him so interesting though. You never know if Khonshu and his "gifts" are just figments of Marc's imagination and he is just insane, or if it's all real, or it's partly real, or whatever. All explanations make reasonable sense, which makes the whole thing way crazier and way more interesting.

    It's interesting seeing so much hate over Rob's opinion of Moon Knight. Let me start off by saying I love Moon Knight, he's one of my favorite superheroes aesthetically and emotionally due to the mental health suggestions throughout his comics, but he does truly have a ludicrous amount of similarities to big Bat, and they aren't entirely unfounded. It's due to his relation with the night, heavy usage of gadgets over "lightning powers, web shooting, teleportation..." etc, his more grim portrayal, playboy by day crimefighter by night, and his usage of his symbol. While yes, most superheroes use their symbol as part of their attire, Moon Knight uses it excessively in a comparable way to Batman. Moon throwing darts, Batterangs. Mono white attire because of the moon. Mono black attire because of night and bats. Finally, another heavy similarity is due to their suggested mental health issues. Most good Batman novels (in my opinion) are ones where it questions the Bats sanity. After spending so long with all the crazies, he must be a little mad underneath the rough exterior no? For someone who stares so long into the void, the void inevitably stares back. To conclude, while it is exceedingly clear Moon Knight was based on the Bat that doesn't invalidate Moon Knights presence or existence to any degree. Like what you like, and don't let other peoples opinions sway that, but also let other people have their own opinions of things.
