    “There’s no love in fear” is my favorite Tool line ever

    • @sqism

      I think this may be my favorite line in any song, ever. 5 simple words that are as meaningful and important to becoming the best version of yourself as any philosophy or self-help book ever written.

    • @Stealthmodeon
      @Stealthmodeon 2 года назад

      Being in a relationship without love, that is only sustained through the fear of leaving... You know if you stay it is a constant struggle to not fall into the madness, to keep your feet flat on the ground, if you fall into the madness you will disappear. You love the monster, but know it is a monster. Cannot leave to save yourself because you love their good side, will only end with you clawing away their throat because you need to kill their bad side.
      Borderline Personality Disorder...

    • @Henrydingus01123
      @Henrydingus01123 Год назад

      Mine too but I liked it a little better when I thought he said “There’s no love in vain” but “there’s no live in fear” is a little more universally correct.

    • @partin25
      @partin25 Год назад

      @@Henrydingus01123 Its actually taken from John 4:18 in the Bible. It says in the New King James version, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
      I don’t believe in a God per se and I’m pretty sure the same goes for Maynard, but there is some good advice sprinkled in with all the mumbo jumbo bullshit.
      When a child has been molested and hurt over and over and has had to live in fear, like in the song, its hard for them to form the bonds of love. Another example is fearing people that don’t live or look like you and being unable to have empathy and love for those people because of ignorance and fear.

    • @DocRobert
      @DocRobert 4 года назад +15

      kotavu Yeah, that’s a haunting lyric. I always kinda read that line like... acknowledging that the person he is in an abusive relationship with is damaged too. That we’re all still children inside, and how abusers are usually acting out the abuse they themselves received. Because the next lines are, “What is this but my reflection? / Who am I to judge or strike you down?” It’s like his inability to fight back, because he sees the innocence inside his abuser. But this changes by the end of the song (at least the album version), when he gets to, “Remember I’ll always love you / As I claw your fucking throat away.” Like in the beginning he’s sort of complacent to the abuse he’s receiving, but by the end he’s determined to survive no matter what. But... you know, it’s Tool, thus wildly open to interpretation, and that’s just mine. Love

    Thank you, Jamel. For being receptive, open and even a little vulnerable. Tool reaches in deep, if you allow it. The power is inside us, they just help us harness it, channel it, focus it. Some songs elicit anger, fear, dystopia. Others crack open hope, love, energy. Keep exploring, my friend. I don’t think any other piece of music has shaken me that close to my core but I bawled my eyes out. But it's art, and everybody has their own interpretation. Dave Grohl has a great line were he says, "you can sing a song to 200,000 people and 200,000 people will give you their own interpretation of a song". I'm not really sure what Maynard's true meaning is behind that line. But it seems to fit with the rest of the lyrics.

    This is my all time favorite song so I'm really glad to see the review on it. Powerful and intense, though I have always associated it closer with bad relationships than with childhood abuse, its all very much the same cycle. Probably not worth its own review, but you may want to check out the album version as well. It flows very differently than this, he was serious when he said it was viewing it from a new angle, and hits in a different way.
    One of the things I love in this song is the way subtle pronunciation changes so much. The lyrics may be 'pushit on me' but a subtle inflection change as he's repeating it makes it 'push it on me' or 'push shit on me'. Same with the idea of 'still love me' gets changed to feel closer to 'steal off me' at points.
    Also from some of your discussions I think you might really dig 'Prison Sex' by them. It uses a very crude metaphor, but its all about that idea of how the golden rule is rather different for those who have been abused. Do onto others has a different connotation if its just perpetuating the cycle of abuse.

      That's how I always looked at it too, a toxic relationship.
      But that's the good thing about Maynard lyrics, he always said he wants the listener to interpret the lyrics the way the relate to them, thats why a lot of their songs are not very specific. Maynard will always have a specific thing he is writing about or a certain emotion but it up to us to put our own experiences to those lyrics. You can interpret the song being about a toxic relationship or child abuse and it makes sense either way. It up to the listener.

      I agree with your assessment, but I've often felt that it covers the back and forth inside your own self after said relationship. The aftereffects you deal with trying to process the toxicity experienced. The realization that things can get dark inside your head but not letting it push you back into the gap. Feeling those hands, and fighting to survive. That's how it helped me anyway. I was happy to see so many feel the depth of the song that I do as well.

    Welcome to, what I've said for more than 20 years, the greatest tool song so far. Goosebumps everytime. I've never been to a tool show that wasn't emotional, vulnerable yet comfortable and is some of the best food for the soul I've ever had. Less than two weeks till I get to see em again. Someone posted about songs involving Maynards mother....wings for Marie part 2 (tool) and Judith (a perfect circle) are fantastic. Thanks so much to Jamel for cranking these out, super pumped to see you found my boy Mike P! Faith no more, Mr Bungle, fantomas, tomahawk, peeping tom, mondo cane, lovage, general patton....can't name em all or it will take all night. Peace and jams to all

    This version of this song is undoubtedly one of the five most emotionally wrenching songs I've ever heard. The lyrics, his vocals, the arrangement, it's unbelievable. The line at the end, "remember I'll always love you as I claw your fucking throat away", screamed from the gut of a clearly haunted and broken man. Yeesh.

    When the gap makes itself visible, vulnerability and embracing that things change is paramount. Remember to love yourself as you tear your throat away. You can go so far down the spiral that the only way is to mute thyself to ljve and love.

    One day you will find yourself listening to a full tool album, by yourself, and it is going to take you to a whole different level and understanding and appreciation of this band.
    For me this song is about the toxic element in relationships of the push pull dynamic that plays out especially during fights or break ups. I guess the dynamic can be applied to a variety of situations.

      Yea he should definitely do their cover of no quarter. He needs to do no quarter from the song remains the same also, but it’s gotta be the original version from the album. In the movie version that they use on all the remastered versions they cut out John Paul Jones solo. It’s criminal dude. It’s stops like half way and goes straight to the guitar solo. It ruins it for me
