San Diego, California - Today I set out on a crazy culinary adventure to discover the best breakfast burritos in San Diego, California.
I was joined on this gluttonous San Diego Food Tour with my friend Brad (IG: SanDiegoFoodieGuy) who made it his mission to discover the best burritos in San Diego!
Today we hit five Mexican food restaurants to find the best burritos for breakfast. Here are the five locations we hit in order:
Taco Surf - This Mexican Food location has been serving Pacific Beach with amazing tacos and burritos since 1989. It is a family run taco shop with a great surf vibe and delicious Mexican food.
JV's Mexican Food - Another Mexican food institution in San Diego is JV's Mexican Food. They have been serving San Diego since 1994 and the tacos, burritos, and traditional Mexican dishes are worth the trip!
Ortiz's Taco Shop - This no frills taco shop in Point Loma is as straight forward and delicious as it gets. Their breakfast burrito is a quintessential representation of the burrito culture in San Diego.
El Indio Mexican Restaurant - Since 1940, El Indio Mexican Restaurant has delivering delicious Mexican dishes to San Diego residents. They originally started as simple tortilla makers and have developed into a must-try Mexican food spot in the city.
Mike's Red Tacos - The newest Mexican restaurant on the list started as a taco truck and now has their first location in Clairemont. If you've watched any of my other Mexican food videos you already know how I feel about Birria, and Mike's Red Tacos does it the right way!
What burritos places in San Diego did we miss?

You need to go La Perla Cocina Mexicana # 3 in Point Loma best Breakfast Burrito and there Oaxacalifornia Burrito the Best Burrito 🌯 you wont be disappointed.
You should start giving scores everywhere you go, similar to Portnoy, or Doug Demuro Car score, would be a fun add.... If your too worried about hurting feelings i get that too! Cheers!
Could you do a top 5 espresso martini/coffee drink in So Cal? My favorite is called "not your abuelita's coffee" at Rokkas Whiskey Bar in Whittier. I would love to find anything that matches that drink.
Stop sharing my hometown with tourists!!! But good work...
Don't you dare share where my Grandpa is buried.... Oops you did...
Thank you so much for having me on the video, I had a blast!!
You all did a great job.....hope you had a great birthday and had room for dinner with your wife since she didn't get to make you breakfast.
I wasn’t able to eat the rest of the day 😂 . I appreciate it!
Dude i want your shirt
Great vid. Im looking forward to the next burrito vids with gareth.
I got a question, do you think San Diegans eat more burritos than any other US city?(per capita)
Born and raised San Diegan… grew up in Chula vista live closer to downtown now For me, the best breakfast burrito is the “super breakfast burrito” at Los Reyes in Golden Hill. You will not regret at least trying it. No affiliation, just a Filipino kid that LOVES Mexican food.
Fun fact: Los Reyes was originally in a much smaller spot down the same street of 25th in Sherman. My mom used to take me as a kid in the 90's. Funny enough I would go for their hamburger and fries. When they changed locations to the current spot, I would still go decades later and they still use the same ingredients for their hamburger and fries combo. Another tidbit, my favorite breakfast burrito is actually across the street from this place at "Humberto's". Love both these places.
I’m trying it in the morning, I’ll update 🫡
@@aidenpeltier786how was it?
Los Reyes get down forsho 🔥
Not born there, but have lived there for several years, and I think telling people where's the best burrito, is like saying where the best pizza or cafe is. It's so damn subjective as everybody has different tastes. So that's why I will never ask people where's the best______ ? Everybody has different tastes and palates. So I'll just go at it on my own or with friends and find out for myself, and then I'll know what's the 'best' whatever.....it is 'for me'.
Finding a good burrito isn’t the issue in San Diego, it’s all about finding the taco shop that will give you a decent size
Seriously! Seems like prices have gone up, but the burritos have gotten smaller!
Los Chavos El Cajon
100% especially when your paying for $15 burritos 🌯
Try Vallarta in Clairemont. Their super burrito is the size of an infant.
My problem is the ones near me are way too big lmao. North county SD local
We are definitely spoiled when it comes to Mexican food here in San Diego.
I lived in San Diego since 1984 and have eaten Mexican food all around the country.
You will never find any better Mexican food than San Diego.
Been going to taco surf for YEARS, now after surfing in PB.
There's no better life.
Also, taco surf has the best vintage surfboard collection that I have ever seen. It's a museum..
San Diego has the best Mexican food period! You should go try the California burrito at Lolita’s in Chula Vista.❤ Dago
This the one!!!
A true hometown favorite.
*best taco shop mexican food. There is far better Mexican food in East Los and places like the Coachella and Imperial Valleys in terms of sit-down "careful, hot plate" restaurants.
I love Lolita’s. In my opinion their pollo asada is their best meat so I swap it into the California Burrito.
Lokitas food is too dry crap and expensive
I’m moving to San Diego next year. Can’t wait to eat good Mexican food everyday!!
I left San Diego for Reno and bruh….i just don’t mess with Mexican food no more. Nothing here comes close :(
@@KariIzumi1 😥
This is more... the best burritos within the first 5 mile radius of the San Diego airport. From Oceanside to Ramona to Campo to Imperial Beach there are so many amazing Mexican food places.
Yall went to the least Mexican areas in SD for burritos lol. The best breakfast burrito is at Humbertos on 25th in Broadway!
Nice to see you back Gareth. I think you have great content. As a native San Diegan... it's not just about the breakfast burrito, the salsa and types of salsa is just as important and can take the burrito to another level.
Living on the other side of the country now, but I lived in PB for several years. Can't tell you how much I'm missing the taco shops! You guys sitting in Taco Surf eating burritos really makes me jealous!
Ortiz’s has the breakfast burrito game on lock 🔒
I like Cotijas hashbrown burrito better but I loved both of them. I used to live right across the street from there. Also got donuts and coffee at that donut shop every morning on my way to work. Haha
My cholesterol is already saying YOU BETTER NOT!!!
Haha, it immediately goes up just watching this! 😂
Man yall aint doing San Diego justice staying in the same area for 4/5 spots. So many better spots you guys missed outside of the Point Loma area!!
Thank for the Southern California coverage. The most creative burritos I've experienced in San Diego are from Sayulitas before warned you'll need several companions to consume and enjoy the experience.
MAN I JUST WENT YESTERDAY ! BROUGHT ME BACK FROM TO THE DAYS WHEN THEY WERE 5$ & THE SIZE OF A MIDGETS LEG!
I have been to the Sayulitas in Mira Mesa and National City area. Their Longanisa and Tosilog breakfast burritos are pretty good. We had to try the Lumpia burrito, but it's a bit overboard.
@user-ce1zy2jd6b sayulitas is trash lol. That lumpia burrito taste like straight oil
The Bomba burrito from sayulitas is a wild ride
*be forewarned
Congrats on 14k subscribers! Yet I’m a little surprised you don’t have more. Your channel is top notch! 👍🏻👍🏻
As a San Diegan, it's hard to beat the Mexican food here. Too many good places to get it.
There is a serious lack of "hot plate" Mexican restaurants here in SD unless you want to go to Old Town(where they tell you "careful the plate is hot" when they serve your food to you). Where I'm from in the Coachella Valley, there is a plethora of these sit-down Mexican joints where you have a server and order off of a menu at the table.
Seems like all you can find easily here are run-of-the-mill taco shops occupying strip mall spaces, or the old mission-style buildings that used to be Taco Bells.
@@kind2311 Seriously? There is no lack of sit down Mexican restaurants in San Diego where you can get a "hot plate" of food. I've lived here 60 years, favorite food? Mexican. Been eating in Mexican restaurants across the county since I was about 10. Hot plates are not uncommon,
The one thing I know for sure, you don't go to a "hole in the wall" taco shop for "hot plate" meals. This video clearly was about best taco shop breakfast burritos. On the go burritos. Also, San Diego has the same plethora of sit-down Mexican joints/restaurants where there is a server and you order from a menu at the table. lol. In my small city within San Diego county there can be two to three of them is a four block radius. Much like the rest of the county.
If your idea of decent Mexican food is narrowed down to Old Town because you got a hot plate there, I don't need any recommendations from you. Then plate may have been hot, but the food is not known and never has been known to be the best
San Diego has to offer. In fact, it's known to serve the palates of tourists. It's a tourist destination eatery, I know since I've eaten at all of the Mexican restaurants there for the last 40 years. I've had better food at some "hole in the wall" taco shops. C'mon we are sitting on the Mexico border. Old Town, lol.
@@emmef7970 ok sorry grandma you're right
@@kind2311 Firstly, you have no idea if I'm a grandmother, lol. Being old doesn't make you a grandparent.
Secondly, I have a feeling you are being facetious but that's okay too. I don't take wise ass remarks too seriously. lol.
Got 2 spots for the California burrito
1. Trujillos (the one by SDSU ONLY) get the sigma pi. Its delicious
2. Get away from all these places off I-8. Come to the South Bay and go to Armandos taco shop. Get the Cali with sour cream and make sure you drench it with red salsa
These videos are insane Gareth, please make more ASAP! If you fancy a trip to Nashville as well, that would help us too my dude 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
Man, looks so tasty! Good to have you back G!😊
Food looks so yummy!!! I've never seen your videos before. I'm happy to have found y'all.
Love that guy Brad! One of the realest and kindest foodies in SD
That was awesome! Thanks for the tips for my lists. Of the few covered, I remember El Indio's food and breakfast burritos when I lived in SD (Hillcrest)-- da bomb! Good times!
You just dropped into my YT feed today Gareth - I'm an instant fan. I'm in north county San Diego - Encinitas - so watching carefully to document your locations. Nothing beats a primo breakfast burrito on a lazy Saturday morning!
.
Great video! Love the part of the cooking! ❤
Love these videos. I look forward to trying some new venues. My go to place is Colima’s in North Park.
Awesome vid! I'm moving to San Diego in a month and always love a breakfast burrito!
Try Estrada's in Santee. Family owned and operated. Their destroyer breakfast burrito is a go to when I work over in that area of town. Their hot sauce is delicious too.
That place is NOT good or authentic. They use fake guacamole
Ortiz’s California burrito is top notch as well
In heaven watching this, we need some of these super yummy places in the Palm Springs area. Breakfast Burritos are one of my favorite food groups!
Looking f forward to your future burrito videos!
Just dropped part 2! Let me know what you think 👊
Im hyped! The accent is dope on y’all😂😭 nice video imma check out your channel!
San diego is such an amazin nice city personally favorite in the US...great video as always G
Nice put together video. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
In a land of endless burrito possibilities, you did manage to make it to my favorite breakfast burrito spot, but didn't get my go-to. Ortiz's machaca burrito is the most simple yet glorious thing ever.
While I enjoy the occasion "classic" breakfast burrito (egg, cheese, bacon/sausage, potato), it's a very Americanized take on a Mexican breakfast. I definitely will opt for something more authentic like machaca or chorizo 90% of the time. I'm definitely going to have to go give the Mike's birria a try!
Hey guys! Born n raised san diegan here also!! If you ever find yourself put toward viejas casino in a once small town named Alpine, head to The Alpine Taco Shop! First place I ever ate mexican food in my life as a child and it still tastes the exact same as it did way back when! Amazing and fresh ingredients with consisitent and unique flavor. Happy travels!
My problem with most breakfast burritos, is that the quality and prep can vary wildly depending on the staff at the restaurant that day.
My biggest peeve is when they don't scramble the eggs beforehand, and instead just crack whole eggs on the griddle, and then chop them up into bits once they've already begun to cook. This results in noticeably different tastes and textures in the burrito as you get individual pieces of cooked egg white and egg yolk. I know it doesn't sound like a big deal, but it's what makes or breaks a place for me. Unless the eggs are scrambled before being cooked, they must be kept whole as a fried egg.
Stop chopping up whole fried eggs!
That's part of the fun in San Diego. Hole in the wall taco shops are everywhere. It's all about trying as many as you can, all over the county to find the ones you love. Same with every other kind of food. So much choice!
The most important thing is to speak up. If you have a preference for the way something is cooked, ask for it. I've asked for all kinds of tweaks on taco shop orders, along with just about everyone I know, never had a problem with reasonable requests. Especially with eggs since they are all cooked on the grill. I've even had a couple request denials as they weren't shown on the menu, but the cook spoke up and said he no problem tweaking my order to suit my taste. Even turned around to leave and said I would just go down to the competing taco joint, lol. Again, they said they would make it. They want the business, it would be weird to turn down an order over how an egg is cooked, at least in my experience.
if you start patronizing the same place or several, make sure to put a tip in the jar every time you go and the cook will soon know your name and make you anything you want and oftentimes give you larger quantities, extra stuff, a free soda or drink, etc. :)
I agree lol, i had my favorite spots and days set lol. After a while you figure out your favorite cooks work schedule. The tricky part is wen you spot your fav cook at another shop and realize he works there now and u must readjust lmfao. Also the egg thing is facts, pre vs post scramble def makes it different.
Great video my mouth is watering first place looks the best for me .
184k views. Congrats man. U been in a lot of work and have been grinding. Found u years ago.
Banger.
I appreciate it! 🙏
When I moved to SD in 1995 the first/best place that Ive ever had a CA burrito was from a hole in the wall taco shop called Los Dos Pedros in north PB. With so many CA burrito variations these days, Los Dos has what me and my friends consider a “real” CA burrito. I enjoy the vids, keep em coming. Thanks.
Los dos pedos? 🍑🔥🔥
San Diego has some bomb ass burritos 🌯. Great video!
Jv's and ortiz's both solid choices. I grew up in Linda Vista and miss going there, Ortiz always made a great California burrito, really enjoy your videos from my hometown sd
JVs is the OG! Always good, always quality, always first choice!
Great video. Superb Job
Bad Hombres in Santee, CA. Get the Bacon Breakfast burrito and substitute the potatoes for hash browns. Or get their Big Breakfast Burrito. They are both BIG and under $8!
Great video. That spot in Point Loma is right by where I lived in college. I need to try that birria burrito. You should check out El Papas Fritas. Small place with HUGE burritos.
Wow! My mouth was watering the whole time. Nice video, y’all made me want a burrito so bad. I went here in Modesto California. I got a Chile relleno burrito. What I would give to be in San Diego best comida Mexicana! Love the Spanish! 👍
OOOHHH GARETH FOOD SO GOOD ,,.. BACK HOME ,,YES!!! I LOVE SMALL SHRIMP AND MEAT AND EVERY THING IN THAT BURRITOS..
YESSSSSS!!!
Love Taco Surf!!! It's a must visit when I'm in PB
Love JV’s!😍😍😍
I been waiting for a video! Finally. I’m in Chula Vista and the following have best burritos: el pollo grill, don pedro on 3rd ave, asadas on Main Street, los panchos on E H street. 😋 🤤
I love the Machaca burritos in SD. Can’t find anything close elsewhere in my travels. I also miss my Early Sunday morning breakfast at the Oldtown Mexican Cafe with the made fresh tortillas. It’s been a long time, May have to road-trip back to San Diego. 😋😋😋
Tbh there's not many bad Mexican food spots in SD. Almost all of the mom and pop spots are really good!
Visited Taco Surf yesterday and it did not disappoint. Tremendous breakfast burrito, must have weighed a couple of pounds. Delicious. Great atmosphere, clean & bright, every employee happy, friendly and service oriented. We'll be returning. Thanks so much. Your videos are excellent.
Y'all just opened up with Taco Surf YOU KNOW IT'S GONNA BE GOOOOD
I mean most of these are in my TOPS.. good work, sir!
Hey, glad to hear - I appreciate that! 👊
El Indios is the classic go to. I love their flautas and dessert burritos!
Mikes Red Tacos is my new favorite spot. OMG their birria tacos are to-die-for no joke!
Another great spot in PB is Konos. Their breakfast burritos have the softest, freshest tortillas I've ever had.
great video Garth
The chorizo & egg burritos out there are fire!
Is it me or were they having contractions by the last burrito place? (grin) 😁 Really great job from both these guys, keep them coming.
Taco Surf is awesome for everything. Nico's in OB has an excellent breakfast burrito as well.
Some great selections. I've tried a lot of spots over the years and Panchitas in North Park has the best breakfast burrito in the city IMO and their salsa game is off the charts
#5 wins the cake hands down.
You got me on the thumbnail buddy! Those look fire🤙
Dang, I just went to San Diego last month, but I think I need to go back ASAP with this new information...
So much more San Diego food videos coming up next!! 🙌
Thanks, Ortiz’s is the best for me in SD👍👍
My wife and I just visited San Diego - from Utah. We hit three of your 5 suggestions, one each morning and were not disappointed! Thanks so much for the video. Mikes Red Tacos was our favorite!! Absolutely huge and packed with flavor! Salsa bar was killer too. His joint is the smallest and was the busiest as well... locals galore... good sign! Take care-
Gareth, you must - MUST - go to Los Reyes on 25th & Broadway in Golden Hill & try their Steak, Egg, Cheese, & Guac breakfast burrito. It's made with a chipotle sauce and all together it's amazing. And it's huge! It's my favorite burrito, period, and the best breakfast burrito in San Diego. Enjoy!
P.S. - my wife and I love your content. Keep up the good work.
Just in time for comic con next week bro!!
I'll be there!!
"Aspiring Burrito Influencer." I think that's probably a dream job for most of us. 🙂
That rub & tug in the background during the Summary! LOL 🤣
I've only been to Mike's Red and it was awesome. Highly recommended while the other places will be on a next time visit. 👍
awesome job, I miss my home of San Diego, moved out of state, Cali has the best mexican food ever!!!
I need these in my life!!!
I'm gettin' the Birria Breakfast Burrito and then...A Massage. ;)
Good Job Guys!
I been going to Taco Surf since the early '90s. Best taco shop in PB. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Huge combo plates and easy on the wallet.
I LOVE SAN DIEGO. CANT WAIT TO GO BACK.
Back in the early 90’s while stationed at Point Loma Sub Base. Adalberto's Mexican Food on Rosecrans had best breakfast burritos in Point Loma. They were open until 2am back then and was perfect for the after club meal or a lazy weekend morning. That’s also when In-N-Out Burgers on Sports Arena Blvd was a walk up only and was truly amazing. I was able to revisit in 2016 and was glad to see that both are still in business. These 2 restaurants definitely contributed to the food culture. San Diego has always had great eats but although I will always have fond memories of both, they wouldn’t make my top 5 breakfast burrito or burger joint in San Diego today. There are just so many great places today.
Good to get San Diego some more love
Nico's in OB is fantastic. My hubs and I go early, get burritos to and sit on the beach and enjoy!
That’s one of the things I miss the most after moving from San Diego. Original Roberto’s breakfast burrito. I love Oregon but no success on a decent burrito
My go-to breakfast burrito spot is Saritas in Casa de Oro. Awesome burritos!!!
Can't wait to stop by this restaurant the next time I visit San Diego!
Nice! Let me know how it goes 👊
Roberto’s was always my favorite spot 😎 too many great burritos in good ole SD
Love Taco Surf!!! that place is bomb!!!!
That birria breakfast burrito looked legit. 🤤
10:18 and 12:47 the way they cook the eggs are spot on; i make my eggs for burritos like mike's, except with butter.
Lol….” Not today babe” nice work guys. Looks like a great way to start a birthday.
I love the burrito tshirt! I use to live in SD for 10 years, and they do have the best taco shops!
I've been to El Indio. Gotta try their breakfast burritos. I've driven by most of these other places. Now I want to try them.
Brad is an awesome guy
You had me at breakfast burrito & San Diego
you gotta come to Smorgasburg LA... let me know, I work there and can show ya around
Great video! That birria burrito looks awesome. When you do your Cali Burrito tour, you should try Santana's, but get the chicken Cali with the achiote chicken. I would maybe try the Morena Blvd location down the street from JV's.
Vallarta's in Clairemont has a great Cali also. Good size burrito.
Good to see you had El Indio mentioned, my go to Breakfast burrito which takes me hour & 45 minutes getting there from Imperial Valley. Unfortunately haven't been able to enjoy being cant keep my wife away from Ed Fernandez Birria tacos, cant complain they are the bomb & consome the bomb. Thanks for sharing!!
Driving almost 2 hours for a breakfast burrito is some dedication! It was a great burrito
Yeah, but you have Kennedy's in Imperial ❤
Gareth I have said it before, you have the most extreme big bite I have ever seen. Glad to see how much you enjoy your work.
There really isn’t a bad spot in San Diego for burritos. And I’ve been to every city n tried em all. They’re all good no joke
True story 💯
I gotta try ALL OF THESE!
For me, nothing beats a good machaca burrito when it comes to breakfast burritos. Put a little sour cream in there and drown it in hot sauce. The best!
100% agree
Best machaca burrito is in national city at a place called La Lomita amazing!
10:33 what kind of push-ups were you doing in the car? Jk lol !! Keep up the quality content.
