    Chris you have inspired us and given us the confidence to learn how to use video editting software. We bought Adobe Premiere Elements 15, Photoshop and the free Audacity. We spent a quite a few hours messing about and came up with rather a messy but funny video. Making bad videos is the best way to lean. Soon we will be doing nice slick intros and outros like you. Thanks. Say hi to Mr Stanley and crinkle

    I've had one of the Rii hand held keyboards for years. I use to control the old laptop that runs my TV. it's worked out very nicely and has been problem free, so I've never thought of replacing it. However, this looks like a great upgrade, and having Bluetooth it would be great for my tablet as well.
    Great review mate, I'll definitely check these out.
    P.S. I always chuckle a bit when you bring out Mr Scissors and Stanley the Knife.

    Until I saw your hands (I walked away for a minute and missed the unboxing) I thought this was one of those Chinese tiny wireless keyboards. It's almost as if they took the design, literally clicked resize and scaled it up 300%. I carry one of the small ones in my "repair" kit. Great emergency keyboards that can be used for all sorts (at least until one can establish a remote connection) or simply for presentations/TV. So many uses!

    Wow, I was surprised to see you use Stanley the Knife to cut that sticker. Was Stanley aware of the Leather case underneath. I hope he didn't as he would have been very upset if he'd accidentally cut it.

    A good thing to add to your review would be the range of the device. For me it is essential with a good range, and i learned the the hard way that manufactures lie about this, i´ve bought three keyboards until i got one that at least did half of the promised distance.

    It is SOOO strange that when our host brings out Mr. Knife and Stanley the Sissors.... I don't mind at all feeling like I'm sitting on a chair meant for 2yo kids. I stay seated like a good boy, occasionally throwing my arms up in the air exclaiming, "yaaaay" or "ooooh" - when something fun or amazing is presented. Come Monday, I quietly return to my job as VP for Global Distribution at a large, multi-national firm.

    I noticed the charge cable had a passthrough USB plug. I guess you can plug its dongle into that so it only needs one socket for charging and communication when you have a limited number of USB plugs. Such as some of the earlier Raspberry Pi boards with a limited number of USB ports avalible and no onboard Bluetooth.

    it is alright to accept money for reviews, in my opinion. as long as you are honest to us and them. biggest issue is not being biased by the money. if they can accept a negative review is up to them.

    Brilliant review, nice work. I have been searching for a somewhat compact non-mechanical, quiet laptop style chicklet keyboard that is responsive.... and... here's the kicker... has both a trackpad as well as a number pad and is illuminated.... if it had a volume wheel for music that would be bloody over the opt brilliant. The Zoweetek Rechargeable Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard with Touchpad and Numeric Keypad is spot on but alas it is not illuminated. The build quality on this Rii K16 looks really good and it looks as though it is large enough for everyday use? Thank you for the great review.

    A Logitech K830 is about the same price. It has full size keys, backlight, and a track pad off to the right, not conflicting with hand position. Media keys are shared with F keys though, but rechargeable battery life is stellar. It doesn't have a nice directional with OK though.
    May I suggest future reviews be more complete, and compare against alternatives?

  • @paulwratt
    @paulwratt 6 лет назад +2

    That appears to be a really nice keyboard, especially with backlight. How well does it fit for regular use and how long does it last before needing a recharge?

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  6 лет назад

      I can't tell you how long the battery lasts, as I can't remember when I last charged it. But it is a long time. It is decent in use (I have not used it as a main keyboard), though I can't type on it as quickly as some other keyboards (which may be a good thing!).

  • @y2ksw1

    You didn't mention that it's a US layout so a little bit of tweaking is required if you connect, for instance, to a UK device like your Netbook or some of the Special characters will be incorrect.

    Very nice keyboard review. I like the idea of putting the touch pad at the top so you don´t drag fingers over it to cause problems while typing. The leather case for transporting is definitely a plus. I use a much simpler bluetooth keyboard on my Raspberry Pi 3; it doesn´t have all the functionality as the one you´ve demonstrated, but it works most of the time. Crack on mate and keep these great videos coming. I really enjoy your video tutorials. Thanks for posting. Cheers from your friend across the great pond. How much is the keyboard you profiled?

    Nitpicky I guess, but I'd really want to see one of those with either a nub or a small trackball there... is there such a thing as a small trackball or mouse which you can connect in a similar way? Multiple Bluetooth devices plus a dongle?

    You didn't mention battery life. I currently use an Rii8 with a slightly larger battery with a dongle connected to a pi 3 using OSMC. If I forget to turn the rii off when I start a movie, the battery is depleted before the movie ends. That sort of performance would certainly not be acceptable for any sort of general use. I would like to know what your experience is. Thnx.

  • @stanpatterson5033
    @stanpatterson5033 7 лет назад

    I like it. About the only constructive criticism I have to offer (about the product) is that I would prefer if it had the other style of keys, mechanical instead of membrane. I've used membrane, they work, but I have found the mechanical ones just more to my liking. I wonder if they would consider a model that has a mechanical keyboard, otherwise identical to this layout. Also, I wonder what the battery life is, and if the device gives any warning (like a flashing led or soft beeping noise) before puking.

    Chris, Thanks for another excellent video.
    Have you used the keyboard enough so that you have a "feel" for real world battery life? Is there an indicator to should how much charge is remaining in the battery? Is the battery design for user replacement?

  • @config2000
    @config2000 7 лет назад

    Is the "command" key on the right the same as the Windows key? If so its on the wrong side and I class this as a design failure. Unless there is a windows orientated version?
    Also is it possible to store the dongle in the keyboard somewhere? If not, again, a (small) design fail.

  • @HullioGQ
    @HullioGQ 7 лет назад +25

    The first thing wrong with the design is the placement of the track-pad. I'm more likely to rest my palm when using the track-pad than when I'm typing. Duh!

    • @thecaptain2281
      @thecaptain2281 7 лет назад +5

      I disagree. The track pad is perfectly placed. MOST people are far more likely to rest the wrist while typing[as I'm literally doing as I type this] then while they move a mouse cursor around.

    • @thecaptain2281
      @thecaptain2281 7 лет назад +1

      +Julius Gashumba
      I've been typing this way for 35 years and have YET to develop carpal tunnel[something that doesn't effect everyone]. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Don't expect everyone to kiss your bum when you make troll like criticisms when it is clear that you have never actually used the device in question. If Prof. Barnatt had found the point you made to be an issue, he would have stated such as he is well known for speaking his mind. But hey, it's a free world, troll on..

    • @HullioGQ
      @HullioGQ 7 лет назад

      +TheCaptain, So what you're saying is that Prof. Barnatt is the source of all knowledge and can't stand correction? Let's be very clear here; everyone reserves the right to make an opinion about a product just as much as you have to remark about my comment. My point was not a trolling comment but a clear observation of the faults of the design. For a grown up, before making such harsh remarks about another individuals observations, maybe you should buy the product and have a first hand rebuke of my comment.

    • @thecaptain2281
      @thecaptain2281 7 лет назад +1

      +Julius Gashumba
      How was that not a troll like response? At the very minimum it was childish. And your "clear" observation was presented as a factual statement when, again, you've had zero interaction with said product. So, really, irony much?

    • @HullioGQ
      @HullioGQ 7 лет назад

      Time to get a life buddy! If the design works why do laptop makers choose to put the trackpad closest to you? Enough said. I'm done arguing over this.

    +ExplainingComputers / Christopher
    Interesting device, it is good to see a keyboard / mouse combination that uses both multipoint bluetooth and the 2.4Ghz wireless HID.
    This device could be use as an excellent replacement for a KVM styled solution.
    But I do have a view problems with the design of this device, for instance I am not sure about the size of the device, I think that it could be to big to be really portable (242 * 165 * 10.3mm), I have a bluetooth Nexus7 clamshell keyboard that is 210 * 150 * 25mm, the Nexus7 keyboard can easily fit into a jacket pocket and is very portable.
    Secondly, the position of the touchpad / mouse, whilst it is true that it is harder to accidentally make contact with the touchpad whilst typing, I can imagine resting the palm of the hand on the keyboard whilst using the touchpad. I am also not a big fan of rubberised keys (reminds me of the Sinclair ZX 16k / 48k Spectrum).
    Lastly, I think the price point is a bit high for this type of device (£51.91 GBP / $66.49 USD), I would expect to pay roughly between £15 - £20 less then the price stated.

    Infuriatingly they've put the mode-switching key where the Control key should be. This drives me INSANE on my ThinkPads, but at least you can reverse the two keys in the Lenovo BIOS, even if the keys are then labelled incorrectly.
    Presumably no such luck here?

      Yes, you are right -- it is easy to hit the wrong key on a copy/paste.

    That odd placement of the trackpad is a deal breaker for me. I'm likely to press any button with my wrist while using the trackpad.

    This trend of putting the charging port on the left or right side of devices is getting annoying as hell, they take up unnecessary space, look hideous and are far more likely to get broken.
    Cool keyboard though.

    I hayan Alcatel Joy Yab 2 i think. It won't connect. I have the Dongle plugged in. Had to use an adapter., A USB C male and a USB female to hold the Dongle.
    The power indicator I'd orange not yellow so I'm changing
    It's red now.
    Will see what happens.

    bit of a blind spot in the design to not provide a "socket" in which to "park" the usb dongle

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 лет назад

      Yes, given that the smaller Rii keyboards have such a socket, I was a little surprised by this. But I guess the idea is that the keyboard is transported in its case, where there is a pocket for the the dongle.

    i have not yet succeeded in trying to connect my rii8 bluetooth minikeyboard to my dell windows 7 laptop via the dongle that came with the rii8 bluettoth, The dongle installs properly (apparently) to my latop, but when i try to gt the rii and the dongle to pair or work together,, having presed every combo of butons ive seen or founfd in every myriad of youtube videos ive watched, it fails to do anything. Can you help ne direct me in how to connect rii8 minikeyboard bluetooth to my windows 7 laptop, The laptop shows the dongle listed in bluettoth radio devices and says all working properly, etc, Very curious to try any ideas, directions, or suggestion to slove this very frustrating problem. It seems logical there should be a way to make this setup function and work. NO??

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 лет назад

      It should just be an issue of plugging in the dongle. Turn on the keyboard (or turn it off and on again) and it works. I regularly use a Rii i8 with a Win 7 laptop.

    Great device there my friend.But there is one common issue with these devices that rub me the wrong way.Mini USB connectors for charging devices.God,do they break easily.What was wrong with putting triple A batteries that you can remove and charge them on a real charger?Not to mention that having batteries can make the device stand at a 30 degree angle.But that is only my opinion.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 лет назад +1

      I agree -- I have other Rii keyboards with mini rather than micro USB for charging, which is a far more robust connector.
