Interesting. I keep seeing different answers to this question. In theory, the cellular Apple watch proves that it *should* be possible. Maybe it depends on the carrier?
I like that you're looking at different uses for a tablet. We forget that we can do so much more with our tech. Mobile broadband plans are typically for tablets yes.... But.... It is possible to buy a phone SIM plan & put the SIM card in the tablet. I'm not an apple user myself but I know that some tablets come with a phone dialer app built in. [Like Samsung & other brands] I've done it myself [here in UK] on a temporary basis, but it was some time ago.
When I was younger and didn’t rely much on cellphone calls or data, I did use an iPad mini as my primary device for like 3 years. Granted, I constantly had wifi so it wasn’t that much of a pain. It was a bit difficult at the end because of the lack of flexibility but I’d say that for someone who doesn’t move much or lives on a campus, you can totally daily drive an iPad mini .
If you want to run this way, I think the best workaround is to use a cheap used iPhone and just run your iPad over the phone's mobile hotspot. Then the phone can forward imessage and phone calls, you can just get the cheaper WiFi only iPad, and you still have a normal phone-only option for when the larger iPad is not convenient. Even when we do get a folding iPhone, it's going to cost $2k like Galaxy Fold. iPad mini + a used Xr is like $750.
For me, I was looking at the Mini as an at-home phone replacement. Instead of looking at a small cell phone screen at home, I look at a tablet screen. But it's also not too large to move around easily like the iPad Pro.
I don't know what your formula is, but this video is one of the very few videos I actually watch without skipping (Very few...like...this is probably the fifth). Awesome video!
I've been doing this for almost 2 months now. I've used google voice as my primary number for 5+ years, and I always carry a set of airpod pros and wf1000xm4s with me, so setting up calling and texting was braindead easy. I usually keep my phone in my backpack anyway so swapping it for an iPad wasn't a problem. being able to use the apple pencil and bigger screen when working on technical drawings makes a world of difference. I since picked up a galaxy z fold 3, and carry both, but I actually default to the iPad more often when I'm out and about because it generally performs better and I'm less worried about damaging it.
@@VezWay007 I don't exactly have a 1:1 comparison, because I keep the battery capped at 85% on the z fold 3. The ipad definitely lasts longer, but neither of them really leave much to be desired in the battery life department.
I did the same thing for 2 days, it’s annoying to carry around since I’m used to the 13 mini, but it does most the things I want it to do just fine! I don’t really make phone calls anyways, I can always use FaceTime audio
I had a 10th gen iPad ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.
It’s not such a crazy concept really. I think more realistic is a cellular Apple Watch, AirPods and an iPad Mini or Pro 11 if you don’t mind it not fitting in your pocket. A lot of people don’t take many calls from their phone these days, popping in some AirPods if it’s worth taking the call is easy enough. It would certainly cut down on distraction from your phone as you’d only get the iPad out as and when needed.
Love Mac Address, but that graph at 2:16 does a terrible job conveying relative performance. Three of the four devices have run times within four seconds of each other on a nearly three minute task. For all practical purposes, they are the same, but the iPhone Pro Max looks way faster in this graph. And the iPhone 13 looks sluggish compared to the rest if you are just looking at the graph, when in reality its only 6% slower than the Pro Max. I understand the point was the emphasize the difference between the devices' performances, but if people have a hard time distinguishing the relative sizes of the bars with the full graph, then people will have the same difficulty noticing any real world performance difference between the devices.
We do this for my 10-year old brother. It's set up where he can FaceTime or iMessage my parents or I when needed, and we have it locked down so he can't FaceTime/iMessage randos on the internet. Bonus: he also gets no spam calls.
1:19 This has happened to me lots of times. The pencil is in the right side and you need to hold it with the other hand because you are left-handed. I laughed because of how often this happens to me
I am planning on buying a device that supports that pen and didn't even realise this could be a problem as I'm also left-handed. It seems to be pretty annoying.
lol, dang, you beat me to this video. I used the iPad mini for a whole week as my only phone and it was...interesting to say to least. Lot's of work around to make it work!
I'd still be interested in seeing as many viewpoints as possible so another video on the subject is welcome imo. I'm very interested in the concept and my next phone has a high chance of being either the mini 6 or in the future, 7.
@@itskoby good to know! I have a feeling a breakdown of each day and what it was like would be interesting. Actually using it for a whole week straight without a backup phone or anything seems interesting to me.
@@ThisIsTechToday something I'd like to see is how well does the pencil stay on during day to day usage, leaving the house, putting it in pockets, etc since it would be used as a phone, keeping up with the pencil is something you have to worry about more than with usual tablet usage. I'm an artist and the pencil is a big draw (pun not intended) for me. I'm sure other artists would be intrigued in using it as their main device too.
I never really understood why would somebody buy the iPad mini. I mean if I was going to buy an iPad (or any other tablet, for that sake), I'd do so because I want to use the bigger screen real estate, no mater whether that be for digital note taking, media consumption or digital art. For me (and I dare to say for most people) the ideal screen size a tablet should have would be somewhere in the middle between a phone and a laptop, so around 10-12'' (concidering that most phones are around 6'' and laptops usualy have a 15.6'' screen - at least where I live in). The 8.3'' of the iPad mini just doesn't do it for me. I mean you can't even take advantage of the bigger screen of an tablet, if the "tablet" is really just a slightly bigger phone... And, as demonstrated in this video, you can essentially use a "tablet" as your phone (if you ommit the software hurdles Apple creates, such as the fact, that you can't use the iPad for phone calls, unless you have an iPhone)
You actually don't need to be on the same Wi-Fi network to make/receive calls using your iPhone's cellular plan. You can enable "Wi-Fi Calling on Other Devices" in Settings so you can make and receive calls on your iPad even when you aren't on the same Wi-Fi network, or if you have a cellular iPad, when you're using its cellular data and away from your iPhone.
I thought I was the only one who knew this…I knew it had to be some other people…he also didn’t mention anything about setting up text forwarding to the iPad from iPhone.
So... I've been rocking a tablet as a phone since 2013, when I got my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. I'm currently on a Samsung Galaxy Tab Active2, and planning to upgrade to a Tab Active3 soon. I gotta say, as someone who lives in this niche it's nice to feel seen! Although I should mention that all my devices have had full native phone capabilities (including earpieces). I lost the self-consciouness about weilding an 8" phone many years ago and I generally enjoy the comments I still regularly get when pulling it out to have a code scanned or tapping to pay. "Oh my god! Is THAT your PHONE?" "That's not a phone right? It's just a tablet?" Funilly enough, almost all my tablet-phone devices have also had pen support (my beloved Sony Z3 Tablet Copmpact did not), and I've always loved the freedom of being able to pull out my S-Pen to jot down a note or sketch something out. Thanks for spreading the word! Tablets are phones too!
I had the same tablet, the 4G version, but never used it as phone except for fun. Great device, but battery quickly degraded. Still have it in a drawer.
@@_Digitalguy which, the Note 8.0? I had to do a battery replacement on my second one of those. One of my favorite things about the Galaxy Tab Actives is user replaceable batteries.
@@SpencerN.C. yes, the Note 8. Did you replace it yourself. I would be scared to attempt a battery replacement on the device and I also barely use it anyway (I now have an iPad mini 5)
@@_Digitalguy yep, super easy to do. A pry tool removes the back panel (it just pops off), and there are just some tiny Phillips head screws holding the battery in place. Took less than 10 minutes. I bought an (at the the time) newly made battery made by Cameron Sino via an eBay seller, instead of some OEM bettery that had been in a box for years, or some knockoff pretending to be a new OEM battery.
Me too! I don't know why Samsung neglects the small tablet form factor and abandoned putting the S-Pen in them. When my last one (Tab A 8.0) got long in tooth, I tried using smartphones (Note 10, Fold 2) but was unsatisfied. The iPad Mini is nice, but the Pencil is not as well integrated into iOS is the S-Pen is into One UI.
I used to use the iPad 1st Gen as an actual phone because it actually had a cellular baseband. With a bit of jailbreaking I could restore the Phone icon as well. I really enjoyed it. Of course from then on they removed the cellular baseband so I could only use data from then on. I loved the look I got when the iPad rung and I put it up to my head to talk like it was just a uber large mobile phone. Good times!
I use my iPad mini 2021 as my main device. Sold my iPhone 13 Pro as soon as I started using this. It goes in my sling bag at work and calls come through to my earbuds. It's a nicer screen size for my old eyeballs. Coupled with a keyboard and mouse I use it to run my business while I'm out as well. Best thing I've ever bought 🙏🏽
I replaced my cell phone with a first generation iPad, back when those were new. Providers prevented me from having a reasonable cellular data plan for just a tablet (for no good reason), so I relied on wifi. I used Grand Central Station (now Google Voice) for phone calls. It was great back then. When the iPad kicked the bucket I got a killer deal on a cell phone plan and a free phone, which I'm riding to this day. Now, with phones being so large, and phone calls being such a small part of the purpose of a phone, there's even less reason to have a smart phone. I'm actually considering ditching cellular computing entirely these days. There aren't really places where I *need* data and don't have free wifi any more, except maybe on a road tip for maps and traffic.
I think the thing that impresses me the most about this channel is how much it doesn't feel like an LTT channel. I love Linus's content, but it is nice to see LMG branching out
This is actually something I really wondered when the iPad Mini came out. Especially because the iPad Mini with cellular is a similar price to an iPhone.
I like this channel because it contains a lot of my favourite LTT tropes and polish without feeling too tied to that channel. Feels fresh and exciting!
I’ve been using only iPad for 2 years now and always struggle with receiving phone calls and messages, this video is really the best thing ever existed
This video wasn’t well researched. I’m using my iPad Mini 6 as a phone by linking it to my old iPhone 8 that sits at home on the charger. By going deep into the settings of iPhone & iPad you can allow iPad 6 to make & receive calls and texts. It works perfectly. Native calls & texts & iMessage & FaceTime (you make phone calls from the FaceTime app but it works perfectly to any number whether they have apple or not). No weird calling apps necessary. Google “call and text from iPad” and click apple’s support page giving step by step directions to activate it.
I tried doing this myself when the mini came out. Used the Apple Watch cellular to take calls, and put my regular phone sim in the iPad. Didn’t want the hassle of getting a new phone number. The only limiting things were text message + phone call routing (iMessage and FaceTime were fine), and app support. You can load iPhone versions of apps like Snapchat or even Tesla but the resolution is diminished and the experience is ruined. Eventually I started keeping my phone in the car on my backpack and used a hotspot. Ended up just going to the 13 pro max.
can you explain more please. i have the cellular watch now but it can only take the calls that come to the sim inside the iphone. when the sim is in the ipad i think it doesn't work. how did you do it
@@lilyluna4155 using facetime on an ipad doesn't require a sim card thats how he was able to use it he didn't really explain what he did with the sim in the ipad
I don’t have an iPad mini, but I have the m1 pro. The app support for iPhone is so annoying. It’s ok if there is no iPad version of it. But why can’t I just use it in slide over mode to have it identical to the phone version?? Why am I forced to use it full screen with big ugly black bars? Makes no sense
My parents bought an ipad air 5 when i was in the hospital for a few months and it’s so addicting even when my parents bought me the 14 pro I still can’t stop using the ipad, the screen is so big and i like it, it’s like a combination of a laptop and a phone 😃
LMG, That is how you do a dbrand sponsored video : first we see the bare device and what it normally looks like, then how it looks with the sticker and even how to apply it. This was much better, you should always do it this way.
I used the same app for a long time for a phone number and used a iPod touch actually, supper light, small and easy to bring with me. The leap for this years back was that in both places I have lived there is a shaw wifi network that covers the entire city and that means I get the full home internet speeds, and no data cost.
The ipad mini is one of my favorite devices, a bunch of my friends hold private pilot licenses and it's use for navigation and routes etc are super super handy. It's really easy to bring as a carry on and during longer flights if they got another one they can use it for reading etc it's handy :)
That was my initial plan, to have the iPad mini 6 replace my iPhone 7plus after waiting patiently for an iPhone version that fits my ideal, a simple list of attributes, but certainly may not be so straightforward for apple to take 6 versions and not check the list. Also extremely torn as 13 is my number and was hoping 13 was gonna be the charm. So I’ve the iPad mini 6, but it’s nowhere close to replacing my 7plus (which is technically less than a year old since I went to apple store for battery replacement and they kaput the logic board- in which they shamefully replaced me with a brand new iPhone 7plus). I’ve tried many ways to break any loopholes there may be to seamless turn it into a max iPhone but failed.
I used the ipad 2 (the first one with a back camera) as my phone for a year and a half. The app i used was talkatone with a google voice number. It was weird as hell, but when the largest phone was smaller than the current iPhone 13 mini, it was the best. Plan for it was half the price of a phone plan at the time too. I may try this again:)
I use my 11 inch iPad Pro as my phone, effectively. I often leave my iPhone at home and carry around the iPad in my purse. I love the form factor and the extra capability. I use it with a pencil and the magic keyboard. Even when I do carry my phone around, it ends up being used as a camera more than anything else, because my 40% faster typing speed on the magic keyboard means I'm saving time if I pull out the ipad to shoot off some quick messages and take down a note. The primary downside is that I can't effectively use it while standing, but that's rarely a problem.
I've been using my 2019 Galaxy Tab A 8.0 as my business phone, and it also has an S Pen. I think it is the international version. Also, I just use my ear buds to speak through or the speaker.
Honestly a big upside is that you'll look slightly less ridiculous than the people who used to carry around the iPad as a photo taking device years ago. Over here that trend has luckily died, but I saw it here a ton in the early years of the iPad
I fully agree that this sells the idea of a folding iPhone perfectly and I can’t wait for one ether. I would honestly try using one as my phone if it had Face ID. I hated Touch ID and don’t want to go back to it. If I did use it as my phone through I would just use an Apple Watch cellular model to make/ receive calls, carry AirPods with me and just leave a cheap iPhone at home for the Watch to connect to.
The presentation and format, the idea, and the slightly less scripted moments where the personality of the host shines through are all things that no one else is doing in the Apple tech space and I really enjoyed it! Keep pushing!
What I've been trying to figure out for hours is how do you use your existing cell phone number with Google Voice so people can call my number instead of having to call the Google Voice number
@@AidenRZ777 On the surface, sure. Looking a bit closer, a 13 pro w/256gb and ipad mini is $1600, and I paid ~$1350 for my 256gb fold. Heck, the fold 3 goes for like $1500 on amazon now. I only even looked into it because my ipad was starting to show its age.
I have been using the iPad Mini 5 for almost four years now. Unlimited data for $8.50 a month through Verizon. I use Google Voice (which is free) to communicate with all non Apple users. I use a small hydration pack to carry it along with my wallet, keys, pocket knife, and so forth. Going to buy the Mini 6 next, and never plan on using another cell phone again. Saves me money and gives me a bigger screen. Only downside is you cannot call 911.
I agree with the conclusion. For the size, a foldable or dual screen with no middle bezel would be the sweet spot. The only reasons for the smaller iPads are weight, size and budget. If those are your biggest concerns they will serve you well as a tablet. If the Apple watch didn't require the iPhone to work, a small iPad a Watch and AirPods would be an amazing setup for a LOT of people. Specially does trying to use their phones less.

This has been possible forever now, Apple doesn’t want iPads being used as phones is the only reason why you won’t get an earpiece on an iPad Mini or a native dialer
I’ve been loving the Mac Address content! Beautiful videography and editing and Jonathon is a great host. One bit of constructive criticism, the Lightroom raw export chart (2:18) is very misleading. It needs to reflect the small differences more clearly rather than making some devices look magnitudes faster than others!
The Nexus 7 tablet was 7" in 2012, now smartphones have nearly that size while the Galaxy S9 Tab Ultra grew to nearly 15", so why not, everything is growing more and more over the years.
I use a cellular iPad mini 6 and Apple Watch 7 (with an iPhone SE in a locked box to allow the data plan) Much happier like this! Less addicted to social apps but more productive with music and video work. Even without the iPad, just walking outside with only Watch in place of a phone (and purse) is so liberating! Having a number of times over the years, dropping a sim card into a Samsung Tab and running it like a phone natively, I'm flabbergasted that even today, Apple tablets cant without apps and workarounds that it looks like ... well ... looks like they dont work too well. How is this not an obvious thing?
US cellular carriers don't want tablets that make phone calls. Every tablet that Samsung makes comes in a variant that makes phone calls natively, they just don't import them to the US. I've had four Samsung international tablets: from the first one I owned, a Tab 7 in 2011 to the last one, a Tab A 8 in 2019, all had the OEM native dialer app. Pop in a SIM and good to go on the T-Moble or AT&T network.
I'm all in about the new iPad mini. But the price tag and the fact that I will have to buy the 2nd gen pencil too, makes me keep my 5th gen for a couple more years.
Do u have any trouble from using the 1st gen pen ones? The only drawback for me getting this mini 6 is also i have to buy the 2nd gen pen which in my country mini 6 + 2nd gen pen adds up about 2x the price of 5 gen mini + 1st gen pen...

Do a bench test on your ipad, apps like GeekBench will do fine. It will show you your ipad model and compare it's performance to the average.
Well now I wish i'd made THIS video. Fantastic work as always!

No, he’s just using the iPhone 20
no.
i swear to fucking god if this turns out to be true i’m gonna cry
This is an Apple channel.
Just like an apple keynote graph! It's so perfect!
just realized, wow. haha.
ha! just posted the same thing to scroll down and see you beat me by 3 hours.
This is now by far the best Mac Address video, and it's exactly the kind of content I was hoping this channel would be.
We do this for my 10-year old brother. It's set up where he can FaceTime or iMessage my parents or I when needed, and we have it locked down so he can't FaceTime/iMessage randos on the internet. Bonus: he also gets no spam calls.
Great idea. Can do this for my daughter when she's 10 soon.
Yeah I’ll be interested in a different viewpoint too. Also, how does it work with apps like WhatsApp and telegram?
@@ThisIsTechToday something I'd like to see is how well does the pencil stay on during day to day usage, leaving the house, putting it in pockets, etc since it would be used as a phone, keeping up with the pencil is something you have to worry about more than with usual tablet usage. I'm an artist and the pencil is a big draw (pun not intended) for me. I'm sure other artists would be intrigued in using it as their main device too.
Do share your experience. Would be very interesting to get different views on this matter
@@BlazePas how do you do that?
If the iPhone can sit in a drawer connected to wifi, no problem. But if it has to have cellular service than its not a cost effective solution.
How do you forward texts or send them from an iPad then?
@@NANOTECHYT Go to settings messages text message forwarding
I keep coming back to this video since it's *hilarious.*
"Oh my god! Is THAT your PHONE?"
"That's not a phone right? It's just a tablet?"
Funilly enough, almost all my tablet-phone devices have also had pen support (my beloved Sony Z3 Tablet Copmpact did not), and I've always loved the freedom of being able to pull out my S-Pen to jot down a note or sketch something out.
Good times!
2:16 This is totally not a great way to show a 10 seconds difference. Makes iPhone 13 look like total garbage, if you're not looking at the numbers.
I have used a tablet as a phone for years! Data plan is super cheap but I use it much differently than described here…
How you do this?
I’ve been waiting for someone to try this
I use my iPad mini 2021 as my main device. Sold my iPhone 13 Pro as soon as I started using this.
It goes in my sling bag at work and calls come through to my earbuds. It's a nicer screen size for my old eyeballs. Coupled with a keyboard and mouse I use it to run my business while I'm out as well.

I love Linus's content, but it is nice to see LMG branching out
this is an LTT channel?
@@maggiethegamer1271 yes
And how there isn’t misinformation
This is actually something I really wondered when the iPad Mini came out. Especially because the iPad Mini with cellular is a similar price to an iPhone.
the production value on these videos are insane
I like this channel because it contains a lot of my favourite LTT tropes and polish without feeling too tied to that channel. Feels fresh and exciting!
some of the best production quality i’ve seen on youtube. Badass!
I love the random "not actually a set" shots you use on this channel.
I really enjoy Jonathan's content on Mac Address, its extremely well put together, thought out, and edited. Looking forward to more. Great stuff
The shots are beautiful and so vibrant and satisfying to look at!
This was much better, you should always do it this way.
huh, i always thought that LMG received an already skinned device from dbrand. lol
I’m really interested in getting that skin for the Apple Pencil. That looks so perfect!
Did you find it somewhere ?
Damn, I love this channel's style, so clean with amazing backgrounds and fun host.
Beautiful scenery of fall foliage in this video. I am on team iPad mini 6th gen.
Thanks for this video. Been needing to answer a question to an aunt about this exact topic

POV: You put a dBrand sticker on your iPad, and then your case and your Apple Pencil already had a dBrand sticker. The iPad one wasn’t the first time.
Honestly I’m impressed with the quality of these videos. Didn’t know this channel existed and I watch LTT all the time

I use a small hydration pack to carry it along with my wallet, keys, pocket knife, and so forth. Going to buy the Mini 6 next, and never plan on using another cell phone again. Saves me money and gives me a bigger screen. Only downside is you cannot call 911.
The way this is presented is outstanding, just vibe of the outdoor space and natural script is on another level
I was wondering if this was possible due to iMessage
it would be possible but you would be only able to call / text people who have imessage and facetime

Having a number of times over the years, dropping a sim card into a Samsung Tab and running it like a phone natively, I'm flabbergasted that even today, Apple tablets cant without apps and workarounds that it looks like ... well ... looks like they dont work too well. How is this not an obvious thing?
Same reason you can’t put an icon at the bottom of the screen. Because for some arbitrary reason, Apple says that’s the way it should be.
