The new iPad Mini is ever so slightly smaller than the old and it now supports 5G. So that's got people thinking about how awesome it would be to use it as a phone. Well, we put a SIM card in it to see what happens and how to make it work.

I knew a lawyer who used an older iPad mini as his primary work device with no phone. He said it was great because most judges wouldn’t allow phones out in their court, but were fine with attorneys reading and taking notes on their tablets. He could go to court with just the mini and pencil in his jacket pocket, and not have to worry about a briefcase with files and junk going through security, and he could tell without interrupting court if his secretary had something urgent that he needed to step out to handle or if the text was just his buddy asking if they were still on for drinks next week.
I never even thought about that use case. That's cool af
@Jayden Doyle... Mostly seems pretty obvious aside from being distracted in court by inane text messages.
Same here. Now I’m just bringing in my iPad to the court. But for trials, I still need to bring along the physical documents because I still need to show to the witness and the court.
But phone is still allowed in Malaysia’s courtroom. For mention cases, I just use the phone to record the minutes of proceedings.
Well organized lawyer, genius if u ask me!
Watching on my galaxy 3 unfolded, I think Linus would agree that you look silly
You guys made that channel’s vision so well. Fantastic cinematography, locations, clean aesthetics. Well done.

iPhone 13. XD
Yes, and the style is very different from LTT and other LMG channels.
honestly you could make the case that mac address literally breaks off from the LTT verse of channels.
I don't own a single mac product personally and I just like these videos.
Must have blurry leaves in foreground!
I don’t know what the carriers allow in Canada. But in the US iPads allow phone calls over Wi-Fi and Data using an an apple feature called iCloud Calling. It links the iPad to my cell phone number and allows me to make outgoing and receive incoming even if my phone is turned off or hundreds of miles away. Just FYI. I use it daily.
It works globally as far I've noticed
I use my iPad mini 2021 as my main device. Sold my iPhone 13 Pro as soon as I started using this.
It goes in my sling bag at work and calls come through to my earbuds. It's a nicer screen size for my old eyeballs. Coupled with a keyboard and mouse I use it to run my business while I'm out as well.
Best thing I've ever bought 🙏🏽
This channel really makes me wish LMG would do more outdoor shoots. The camera and colour work in all these Mac Address videos have been phenomenal, compared to how lacklustre the studio content can sometimes look. I see them constantly tweak/struggle with the colour grades in TechLinked and Short Circuit but I've never failed to be amazed at the work they can do outdoors.
I notice that too. The studio content looks too brighty like a school project video.
Techlinked's timeline is shoot and edit on the same day. As for Short Circuit, it is because that channel is supposed to the be the experimental channel that constantly try new things for presenting new products? I guess that is why they have consistency issues. I still enjoy those videos though
Wow
lol, dang, you beat me to this video. I used the iPad mini for a whole week as my only phone and it was...interesting to say to least. Lot's of work around to make it work!
I'd still be interested in seeing as many viewpoints as possible so another video on the subject is welcome imo. I'm very interested in the concept and my next phone has a high chance of being either the mini 6 or in the future, 7.
@@itskoby good to know! I have a feeling a breakdown of each day and what it was like would be interesting. Actually using it for a whole week straight without a backup phone or anything seems interesting to me.
Yeah I’ll be interested in a different viewpoint too. Also, how does it work with apps like WhatsApp and telegram?
@@ThisIsTechToday something I'd like to see is how well does the pencil stay on during day to day usage, leaving the house, putting it in pockets, etc since it would be used as a phone, keeping up with the pencil is something you have to worry about more than with usual tablet usage. I'm an artist and the pencil is a big draw (pun not intended) for me. I'm sure other artists would be intrigued in using it as their main device too.
Do share your experience. Would be very interesting to get different views on this matter
Samsung galaxy z fold 3 : and why I’m here
Ipad mini is like half times cheaper
I had a 10th gen iPad ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.
Do a bench test on your ipad, apps like GeekBench will do fine. It will show you your ipad model and compare it's performance to the average.
Well now I wish i'd made THIS video. Fantastic work as always!
What up verified
I was also waiting for this.. 👌👌

It’s not such a crazy concept really. I think more realistic is a cellular Apple Watch, AirPods and an iPad Mini or Pro 11 if you don’t mind it not fitting in your pocket.
A lot of people don’t take many calls from their phone these days, popping in some AirPods if it’s worth taking the call is easy enough.
It would certainly cut down on distraction from your phone as you’d only get the iPad out as and when needed.
The Production Quality of his Videos is just outstanding to me
How does he get such good sound in windy outdoor conditions!?
Would you expect less from multi-milion dollar media group?
@@melissablick779 using a lav mic under clothing or a shotgun mic with a dead cat wind cover are pretty standard solutions.
@Vinícius Felipe Posselt Difference between daily videos and weekly videos, I guess.
@Vinícius Felipe Posselt agreed, Linus feels way more casual while this feels more professional
No, he’s just using the iPhone 20
I did the same thing for 2 days, it’s annoying to carry around since I’m used to the 13 mini, but it does most the things I want it to do just fine! I don’t really make phone calls anyways, I can always use FaceTime audio
When I was younger and didn’t rely much on cellphone calls or data, I did use an iPad mini as my primary device for like 3 years. Granted, I constantly had wifi so it wasn’t that much of a pain. It was a bit difficult at the end because of the lack of flexibility but I’d say that for someone who doesn’t move much or lives on a campus, you can totally daily drive an iPad mini .
Same!
I did that with an iPod touch lol
@@lizbetgallegos2237 same!
@@lizbetgallegos2237 same, back in 2011 I had an iPod touch as my main phone, had to carry a flip phone to make calls
How much did you get paid for Puss n Boots?
We do this for my 10-year old brother. It's set up where he can FaceTime or iMessage my parents or I when needed, and we have it locked down so he can't FaceTime/iMessage randos on the internet. Bonus: he also gets no spam calls.
Great idea. Can do this for my daughter when she's 10 soon.
Some of the best camera work I've ever seen out of LTT. Good job guys!
I like that you're looking at different uses for a tablet.
We forget that we can do so much more with our tech.
Mobile broadband plans are typically for tablets yes.... But.... It is possible to buy a phone SIM plan & put the SIM card in the tablet. I'm not an apple user myself but I know that some tablets come with a phone dialer app built in. [Like Samsung & other brands]
I've done it myself [here in UK] on a temporary basis, but it was some time ago.
For me, I was looking at the Mini as an at-home phone replacement. Instead of looking at a small cell phone screen at home, I look at a tablet screen. But it's also not too large to move around easily like the iPad Pro.
This is now by far the best Mac Address video, and it's exactly the kind of content I was hoping this channel would be.
Thank you for making this video. 💯
I was just literally considering doing this. Your context was very and thorough and fun as well.
Got a lot of value from this.
I've been doing this for almost 2 months now. I've used google voice as my primary number for 5+ years, and I always carry a set of airpod pros and wf1000xm4s with me, so setting up calling and texting was braindead easy. I usually keep my phone in my backpack anyway so swapping it for an iPad wasn't a problem. being able to use the apple pencil and bigger screen when working on technical drawings makes a world of difference. I since picked up a galaxy z fold 3, and carry both, but I actually default to the iPad more often when I'm out and about because it generally performs better and I'm less worried about damaging it.
Same here i hate 6.1 or 6.7 size
how's the battery life between the ipad mini and z fold 3?
@@VezWay007 I don't exactly have a 1:1 comparison, because I keep the battery capped at 85% on the z fold 3. The ipad definitely lasts longer, but neither of them really leave much to be desired in the battery life department.
works better if you have a mobile hotspot
I ditched my Fold 2 for the Mini. With GV, there's no need for a smartphone.
I’ve been waiting for someone to try this
You had answered me everything. Thanks!
Wow! I've been thinking about this! Thanks for the vid.
Why am not at all surprised this guy is left handed.
Love Mac Address, but that graph at 2:16 does a terrible job conveying relative performance. Three of the four devices have run times within four seconds of each other on a nearly three minute task. For all practical purposes, they are the same, but the iPhone Pro Max looks way faster in this graph. And the iPhone 13 looks sluggish compared to the rest if you are just looking at the graph, when in reality its only 6% slower than the Pro Max.
I understand the point was the emphasize the difference between the devices' performances, but if people have a hard time distinguishing the relative sizes of the bars with the full graph, then people will have the same difficulty noticing any real world performance difference between the devices.
This is an Apple channel.
Just like an apple keynote graph! It's so perfect!
just realized, wow. haha.
ha! just posted the same thing to scroll down and see you beat me by 3 hours.
I have used a tablet as a phone for years! Data plan is super cheap but I use it much differently than described here…
How you do this?
Excellent video and of course I love the setting. Such a great contrast to the high tech topic. I look forward to seeing more of your videos!
I like this channel because it contains a lot of my favourite LTT tropes and polish without feeling too tied to that channel. Feels fresh and exciting!
I had an iPad Air as my only mobile device once. My iPhone were in service, and It was distant 2015 out there.
It was surprisingly smooth experience. Internet access completely covered all of my communication, and I had all apps I needed for studying. Combined with having one less obstacle (personal hotspot) to internet, overall it even better suited for my use case. And I found myself wasting less time in some time-killer apps.
some of the best production quality i’ve seen on youtube. Badass!
i discovered that function using headphones, while doing some work outside... it came quite handy but
i usually answer on the phone. still the greatest is the continuity that gives you when working with multiple devices. sometimes i even answer on the computer
i love that you make use of the season and generally go outside a lot in your videos
So... I've been rocking a tablet as a phone since 2013, when I got my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. I'm currently on a Samsung Galaxy Tab Active2, and planning to upgrade to a Tab Active3 soon.
I gotta say, as someone who lives in this niche it's nice to feel seen! Although I should mention that all my devices have had full native phone capabilities (including earpieces). I lost the self-consciouness about weilding an 8" phone many years ago and I generally enjoy the comments I still regularly get when pulling it out to have a code scanned or tapping to pay.
"Oh my god! Is THAT your PHONE?"
"That's not a phone right? It's just a tablet?"
Funilly enough, almost all my tablet-phone devices have also had pen support (my beloved Sony Z3 Tablet Copmpact did not), and I've always loved the freedom of being able to pull out my S-Pen to jot down a note or sketch something out.
Thanks for spreading the word! Tablets are phones too!
I had the same tablet, the 4G version, but never used it as phone except for fun. Great device, but battery quickly degraded. Still have it in a drawer.
@@_Digitalguy which, the Note 8.0? I had to do a battery replacement on my second one of those. One of my favorite things about the Galaxy Tab Actives is user replaceable batteries.
@@SpencerN.C. yes, the Note 8. Did you replace it yourself. I would be scared to attempt a battery replacement on the device and I also barely use it anyway (I now have an iPad mini 5)
@@_Digitalguy yep, super easy to do. A pry tool removes the back panel (it just pops off), and there are just some tiny Phillips head screws holding the battery in place. Took less than 10 minutes.
I bought an (at the the time) newly made battery made by Cameron Sino via an eBay seller, instead of some OEM bettery that had been in a box for years, or some knockoff pretending to be a new OEM battery.
Me too!
I don't know why Samsung neglects the small tablet form factor and abandoned putting the S-Pen in them. When my last one (Tab A 8.0) got long in tooth, I tried using smartphones (Note 10, Fold 2) but was unsatisfied. The iPad Mini is nice, but the Pencil is not as well integrated into iOS is the S-Pen is into One UI.
this video is absolutely stunning to look at
I love the outdoor setup
This is actually something I really wondered when the iPad Mini came out. Especially because the iPad Mini with cellular is a similar price to an iPhone.
I used the ipad 2 (the first one with a back camera) as my phone for a year and a half. The app i used was talkatone with a google voice number. It was weird as hell, but when the largest phone was smaller than the current iPhone 13 mini, it was the best. Plan for it was half the price of a phone plan at the time too. I may try this again:)
Thank you for this video. I was wondering this.
I’m so glad I found this, I love your channel already
The ipad mini is one of my favorite devices, a bunch of my friends hold private pilot licenses and it's use for navigation and routes etc are super super handy. It's really easy to bring as a carry on and during longer flights if they got another one they can use it for reading etc it's handy :)
You actually don't need to be on the same Wi-Fi network to make/receive calls using your iPhone's cellular plan. You can enable "Wi-Fi Calling on Other Devices" in Settings so you can make and receive calls on your iPad even when you aren't on the same Wi-Fi network, or if you have a cellular iPad, when you're using its cellular data and away from your iPhone.
I thought I was the only one who knew this…I knew it had to be some other people…he also didn’t mention anything about setting up text forwarding to the iPad from iPhone.
@@BlazePas how do you do that?
If the iPhone can sit in a drawer connected to wifi, no problem. But if it has to have cellular service than its not a cost effective solution.
How do you forward texts or send them from an iPad then?
@@NANOTECHYT Go to settings messages text message forwarding

actually a very interesting take. I'm a big supporter of the mini (ipad mini 4 user) and when it goes slow or dies, it will be replaced without delay by the newest gen. It is exactly perfect for mobile netflix and dji controller.
1:19 This has happened to me lots of times. The pencil is in the right side and you need to hold it with the other hand because you are left-handed. I laughed because of how often this happens to me
I am planning on buying a device that supports that pen and didn't even realise this could be a problem as I'm also left-handed. It seems to be pretty annoying.
The shots are beautiful and so vibrant and satisfying to look at!

This video wasn’t well researched. I’m using my iPad Mini 6 as a phone by linking it to my old iPhone 8 that sits at home. By going deep into the settings you can allow iPad 6 to make & receive calls and texts. It works perfectly. Native calls & texts & iMessage & FaceTime. No weird calling apps necessary. Hey thank you much for the video .
I really like the iPad mini. I’m gonna get one & probably use it as a phone .
Thanks again 🎉
If you want to run this way, I think the best workaround is to use a cheap used iPhone and just run your iPad over the phone's mobile hotspot. Then the phone can forward imessage and phone calls, you can just get the cheaper WiFi only iPad, and you still have a normal phone-only option for when the larger iPad is not convenient. Even when we do get a folding iPhone, it's going to cost $2k like Galaxy Fold. iPad mini + a used Xr is like $750.
The laid back and use case centered approach of this review is awesome! Instantly subscribed, great videography too in the natural locations 👌
P.s.: I always wanted something "mini tablet"-sized to use as a phone: imagine seeing something cool while walking in the park and being able to sketch it right away, imagine being able to properly watch RUclips vids or reading an ebook on a train ride, imagine having a big navigation map for when you're travelling, imagine having an on the go movie night in your car with your friends/gf/bf while eating some fast food (...)

I used to use the iPad 1st Gen as an actual phone because it actually had a cellular baseband. With a bit of jailbreaking I could restore the Phone icon as well. I really enjoyed it. Of course from then on they removed the cellular baseband so I could only use data from then on. I loved the look I got when the iPad rung and I put it up to my head to talk like it was just a uber large mobile phone. Good times!

I used the same app for a long time for a phone number and used a iPod touch actually, supper light, small and easy to bring with me. The leap for this years back was that in both places I have lived there is a shaw wifi network that covers the entire city and that means I get the full home internet speeds, and no data cost.
I fully agree that this sells the idea of a folding iPhone perfectly and I can’t wait for one ether. I would honestly try using one as my phone if it had Face ID. I hated Touch ID and don’t want to go back to it. If I did use it as my phone through I would just use an Apple Watch cellular model to make/ receive calls, carry AirPods with me and just leave a cheap iPhone at home for the Watch to connect to.
I replaced my cell phone with a first generation iPad, back when those were new. Providers prevented me from having a reasonable cellular data plan for just a tablet (for no good reason), so I relied on wifi. I used Grand Central Station (now Google Voice) for phone calls. It was great back then. When the iPad kicked the bucket I got a killer deal on a cell phone plan and a free phone, which I'm riding to this day. Now, with phones being so large, and phone calls being such a small part of the purpose of a phone, there's even less reason to have a smart phone. I'm actually considering ditching cellular computing entirely these days. There aren't really places where I *need* data and don't have free wifi any more, except maybe on a road tip for maps and traffic.

I’ve been waiting for someone to make this exact video ever since the new mini came out and everyone was talking about using it as a phone
I have been using an IPad mini as a phone for over 10 years. I use an app called Line 2 that has a dialer, and a text function. I use the older version of the Line 2 app, as I see where there is another version out now. The Line 2 app lets me have a phone number and I have no problems with text and phone calls that way. There are cellular data plans out there that offer unlimited data for tablets at a reasonable price. Don’t ask for a cell phone plan but for a data only plan for a tablet. This requires you to call service providers and ask as they don’t advertise that these are available. You can use wireless earbuds or you can just use the IPad mini as a speakerphone when making or receiving calls. It has a built in mic on the opposite end from where the charge port is. Cheers
Exactly what I wanted to know! Thanks! Honestly I’m super excited for a folding iPhone but more so for Apple glasses. I can’t freaking wait to not worry about screen size ever again because it’s as big as I want projected in front of me!
Great video. I’m one of those that is currently trying to use my Ipad Mini as a phone during my work commutes on trains. So far so good. I did encounter the issue of having to bump up my iPad’s data plan as the paltry 500 MB that came with the original plan crapped out after about 2 hours of RUclips watching. I like the larger form factor from my iPhone 11 Pro Max. I can see your comparing this to a foldable but I don’t think it’s as akin to the Samsung as it is to the MS Surface Fold’s large form factor and phone functionality. I too am awaiting Apple to get on the folding bandwagon but until then, this seems to be working just fine.
First time on this channel. Great stuff love the presentation.
I was wondering if this was possible due to iMessage
it would be possible but you would be only able to call / text people who have imessage and facetime
This video wasn’t well researched. I’m using my iPad Mini 6 as a phone by linking it to my old iPhone 8 that sits at home on the charger.
