If the fish are on the surface stripers will hit anything, but that usually happens only during the fall run. Mostly the fish are cruising along the bottom or in the surf. Therefore you have to get your lures down deep. If you fish the rocks off the lighthouse, the guys will be casting 3 oz. bucktails w/ pork rind. There is a reason for this. Bucktails are cheap, and bucktails go deep. Breaking off $20 needle fish, poppers, Danny plugs, Gibbs and other fancy plugs costs money. Trust me, I know. I used to spearfish around Montauk Point Lighthouse -- and collected hundreds of lures. At night those guys fished live eels -- 'cause that is what is most effective.
I would go up to the Turtle Cove during the fall run. Hundreds of surfcasters would be lined up shoulder to shoulder. Not a single one making a cast as they all waited for the fish to start busting wate I would swim out with snorkel and mask. Schools of stripers so thick that you would not believe it unless you were there. Meanwhile, on shore, 'cause the fish were not busting the surface not a single cast. When the fish finally break the surface, and the birds start diving -- it matters not what you are casting 'cause it will be pure coindince that you hook one.

I found myself doing that this summer.when making trips to the cape cod canal ended up filling a spare bag with a bunch of heavy rubber and jigs that were about 4ozs more than i needed here..lol owell i wont have to buy it next year when the big fish show up there i guess
