New Toyota GR Yaris v Nissan GT-R Nismo review | On-track giant killing? | Autocar

- Опубликовано: 10 фев 2021
- The 2021 Toyota GR Yaris is the hot hatch hero of its generation. This 257bhp hot-shoe is one of our favourite cars of the moment, priced at only £33,495 (including a Circuit Pack) but capable of 0-62mph in 5.5sec and with a top speed of 143mph.
But we wondered, given it has a bespoke four-wheel drive system, just how capable it was in lousy conditions. So we arranged it to meet with another four-wheel drive performance car, the 2021 Nissan GT-R Nismo, in very cold, very wet and quite foggy conditions.
The two cars are quite different. The Toyota is small and, relatively, affordable and modestly powered. The GT-R Nismo, meanwhile, has 592bhp, a 196mph top speed, can go from 0-62mph in 2.8sec and costs some £180,095.
On track together, though, how different will their driving characteristics, capabilities and lap times prove? Join Matt Prior as we find out.

The future generations would be confused when they see the 90s Japanese contenders were " NSX, GT-R, and Supra ". Then suddenly two decades later " NSX, GT-R, and Yaris"
Put a proper driver in the nismo which is 10 times the Yaris in any sense of the word and the Yaris will stay in e category with golfs and civics.
@@AceGTR32 of course, not to mention the Yaris is lame in the looks and feels. After 10 years, no one would remember it as people remember a special car like the GT-R. No need to put a proper driver. @@TinoushGTR HP doesn't matter on a dark wet British b road, Grip, handling, braking are what matters. Good luck catching a wee Yaris in your expensive supercar.
@@u04pww2 peace of cake buddy. 😂 Michelin 285 wide pro pilot with 550hp. Makes yaris look like a smart. You guys are dreaming. This nismo had semi slicks on a pond of a track. Go read how semi slicks work.
Can you test the GR Yaris against a ridiculously different car?
Autocar: hold my beer..
The result is astonishing I don’t care what type of condition the track is in with the power advantage that the GTR has the Yaris should never be able to beat it that is amazing engineering from Toyota
The reason why it did well is the tyres. One is wearing semi slicks that basically don't work in the wet.
@@sodazman I understand that the GTR still has almost double the power of the Yaris tires are not the gtr should still win It has more than double the power
@@Toyota4Life Well it was beaten by the Civic Type R in the same track in the wet. The GTR is around 6-8 seconds quicker per lap on most tracks.
@@Toyota4Life more power means nothing if it can’t put it down.
The "engineering" is similarly amazing in both cars. The Toyota's is just more specific to these specific sets of conditions.
The Yaris just keeps on impressing 🔥

The Tyres clearly make a difference and we all know f that Michelin PS 4 are very good on this conditions, i can't say the same for the Dunlop but like you said let's see how they get on. This demonstrates that in very wet day in this circuit you have difficultly using all the power, so the most balanced wins.
The PS4S as fitted to the yaris are not great in the wet. The PS4 is much better.
@@tracktimevideos5164 Awesome to hear they are even better. Ive never driven a tire as good as the 4s in the wet. On a wet road in a rwd Corvette or Camaro with 455hp lt1 you can put down basically all the power even in 1st gear if you are smooth. I've pulled 1.0g on a wet road in my car. With heavy rain it can hydroplane but with light rain like in the video it's pretty good. Much better than the gtr's track focused tires.

Great video Autocar. Not just to cars covered (both great & interesting H2H), but the format, really like the data given at the end, enough to give a deeper look, but not OTT.
These cars are very different, the only things they have in common are: AWD, they are Japanese, and they look very good in white.
This serves to show the impact a set of tires can have on a cars handling/braking and overall grip levels. Makes or breaks a lap time.
Not even a Super Trofeo Huracan could do better around a track that’s only 30ft wide and .9 miles long😂 race around Monza and see what happens.

Let’s take a second to understand the monster the Yaris would be with 500 to 600 hp.....
its a 3 cylinder 1.6L, it wont be drivable

Interesting video, but I'd still take the GTR, Funny you mention the Mitsubushi evo, I had a 6, probably the most fun, most mental car I've ever had, but I did go through a few gearboxes, something to do with layshaft bearings
Every Yaris owner will now believe they can corner faster than a GTR in the wet... until they try racing one on the same MPS4 tyres 😂
EXACTLY this mate!!! Both great cars but put them on the same tyres and things would be very different!
Sounds like butthurt.
Just give the Yaris credit instead of trying to bash it.
nope.. the tub of lard is always gonna lose out to this GR. Its that simple.
And gr yaris introduced his big brother, lexus lfa. 👀 Nissan gtr would get wreck.
Everyone forgetting that Tyres play a massive part in a lap time?
no... one has double the bhp too. Forgetting that?
@@hoomee7605 and is almost 500kg heavier and has stiffer suspension which is a disadvantage in the wet, you forgot that too?
Everything on this test was against GT-R. Take them to monza if you got balls.
Two things I learned from this video :
1. Don't use tyres that are borderline semi-slicks on a wet day in February
2. 99% of the people here don't know (1) and how much of a difference it actually makes.
Nothing against the test, I just get triggered by how much people over-glorify the Yaris.

what a great test in the wet so good to see a real test of capability
Exactly. People love to see drag races, laps round the ring, spa etc in videos. For most people in the UK, wet, twisty, uneven roads is where you drive for fun most of the time.
I had my test drive round Strines, Bradfield etc in the Peak District in driving rain and it was hilarious.
I enjoyed watching the Video Comparison. Is It the same GR Yaris that you chose as your latest Long Term Test Car
Thank You GT-R for existing ❤️.
It would be interesting to see the Lichfield GR Yaris compared to a used Lichfield modified GTR which would cost around similar money. I know comparing used to new is a bit unfair but as a weekend toy/occasional trackcar it would be very interesting to see your opinion on what car you would go for.
Thankyou Akio and the team of dedicated engineers for bringing us this insanely awesome street fighter🙌🙌
Am I the only one who's blown away by the fact that the GTR got beaten by a GR Yaris? I know the Yaris is more agile and stops faster, but the GTR is in another league in terms of power and this track doesn't have many tight corners. I would've also thought the GTR's 4WD system would be well suited to a track like this.
And it's the track spec Nismo, the very best in GTR engineering!
Tiny circuit, rubbish conditions, it’s not that surprising at all tbh. In the GTR he would have had to let off the throttle so much earlier and been a lot more cautious where as in the Yaris he would have been pushing a lot harder. I take nothing away from the GR Yaris it’s a fantastic achievement but unless you are in this exact situation the GTR would win.
The only problem is the driver, ha wasnt brave enough to drive the GTR properly.
@@p.thomas4099 exactly
well that was fun \o/
Up next: dry-road optimised nismo vs pedal boat in local pond, who will win??!!11!

GTR is legendary but I'm happy to settle for the GR Yaris hopefully can get one since I recently put my name on the waiting list.
Spot on
I feel the engagement could’ve improved if the gearstick is closer. Seems quite a bit of a reach from the seat.
I’d love someone to do a summary of the pros and cons of the three drive settings on the GR Yaris, i.e. best for fast road and how different they feel.
If Toyota manages to make more beautiful cars in its sports versions and larger interiors especially in height it will have level up! Nice video.
Spot on about the adjustability, I wish my GR was a bit more like my old Evo in that regard too. The tail doesn't come out even in sports mode. The only way is to yank the handbrake.
That's what the hand-brake is for... to make the tail come out. It's rally driver controls. You want to get around the long high speed corners as fast as possible, so the car has to have as much grip as possible. The hand-brake is an advanced driving control, essentially the 'tail out button' AND the most fun, it's just that people tend to forget..
@@sunrisesunset1734 No that's not quite what I'm talking about. The Evos can step the rear out slightly to help it corner. It's not the same as a handbrake assisted turn which is really slow most of the time. My GR (I have the circuit pack) doesn't have the same throttle and steering adjustability. It's still quick but not nearly interactive or fun.
@@sodazman Well some guys in a video were talking about how the stock suspension can be tweaked quite a bit to give it that 'oversteering under throttle' capability if one wishes. I mean, what we're talking about is simply a suspension setting thing right? The engine has plenty power and torque, AND a setting for rear wheel bias.
@@sunrisesunset1734 It's not a suspension issue but more of a difference in the AWD systems. You can do a 4 wheel drift in an Evo and GTR but that's not possible in a GR. I still love my GR but I do miss that from my old car.
@@sodazman Well I dunno then, maybe this AWD system is superior and what wins world rallys for Toyota... they've had years to perfect it... also.. you associate handbraking with slow cornering but... a WRC driver yanks on the h every 10 seconds on average. Maybe you should mod your Yaris with one of those vertical easy-to-reach-and-yank handbrake levers... another thing I might add is that, this GR Yaris is probably made to be driven FAST to have fun, driven even FASTER than that Evolution, hence the immense traction. It's also probably made to go much faster in snow and gravel, hence the extra extra extra grip. I think it's the AWD system that's providing all that extra grip, the tyres aren't special at all.
As a Japanese car fan thank you for producing this video. I wonder if Nissan will can the GT-R?
Very surprised by that result. Those Yaris are incredible, definitely the choice if you live in a city and want something incredibly quick but equally as nimble. Boy racers will be all over these in a few years, tuning the living daylights outta them haha! I look forward to seeing how tuneable these cars are.
The Japanese tuning firms have wasted no time that.
@@5555petros nice! Looks like i need to look them up, hopefully theres some youtube vids showing it.
Not sure how you can tune a 3 cilinder. You might get 300hp out of it? If tuning is your thing, get a golf 7 r or a RS3. 0-100 in 2.1 sec. Go watch mighty car modes.

Yep. Just did that. 58k bought a mint 2013 GT-R. Gr is 52k where I live.
@@TinoushGTR ohh so that would be even slower under these conditions?
You didn't factor in service/repair bills
@@mgr1633 nope faster. I got Michelin pro pilot and not semis like the nismo in the rain. Guy didn't had the balls to go all out anyways. He is missing every race line. LMAO.
Great fun!
This thing is insane in its capabilities to street fight against anything in real world conditions.
Get both to do a few laps around Spa!
I would have liked to have seen the footage from both the timed laps. To better compare both cars and driver.
A standard GTR in the wet is a handful, and my first ever experience in one on a very wet track had the rear completely step out coming out of a slow radius hair pin when I tried to give it some. My immediate reaction was to back of the throttle, steer in, straighten up and go again.
If you don’t have any confidence in the car, keeping your foot in and hoping the electronics sort it out, is to be honest not really on the table.
So I can understand a lighter more balanced and tractable car, producing a better lap time.
Swap to a racing driver, or equivalent tyres and I’m convinced this would have been a different result.

I enjoy Matt Prior. He kept-wicket to an acceptable standard, under performed with the bat as per the keepers code, and doesn’t have ants in his pants when reviewing a car, a rare commodity in this day and age.
Rerun in July?
In a country (as opposed to, say Dubai) where a lot of days do present conditions similar to this, this result ought to carry quite some weight with buyers. Even though the GTR is obviously a bit shortchanged and "underutilized", compared to a car which was almost purpose built for this sort of weather, lack of grip, low speeds and tight, bumpy track layout.
The slick surface is also an advantage for even more humble offerings... In this battle, I think I'd have as much fun in my AWD 2.0L Kona if it had a 6MT (instead of my 6spd auto).
Matt was talking away, blah blah blah and a Durex advert came on. Quite amused me.
You know that the adverts are tailored to you?
C mon toyota, you make a car for the track and you got them hazard lights on on every bloody braking? WTF?
How about Juke R vs GR yaris.. pls make it happen 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
A lighter car with better tires handles better than a heavy car with non wet spec tires with lots of corners HP doesn’t really matter much it’s about grip and agility now that that on a proper track and see how much you fall behind
And put them on real road conditions and see how much further the GTR falls behind. It's just too big and heavy to compete with the GR
can you put the yaris up against the evo X and STI ???

😂😂😂😂😂 this shows nothing kid. It's a wet karting track. GT-R wearing semi slicks. What did you expect? Go watch best motoring. GT-R nismo did it in 59 seconds on tsukuba and gr did it in 1:06. And that's on a short track. Take them to spa or Nurburgring and it will be a huge difference. Good laugh tho.
I don't understand why Toyota called this car a GR 'Yaris'. I mean, I'm pretty sure people who know less about cars won't understand what it really is, meaning in the broader perspective, this won't help Toyota's image as much as it could.
Because the WRC version is also a Yaris?
@@electrikoptik The WRC isn't though. They build the GR Yaris as a homologation model for the WRC car which needs to be based on a production model (25K in one year produced at least).
It doesn't matter because the people that don't know what it is are not really into cars in the first place.
@@v4skunk739 Unfortunately, that's the group of people that decide what the value of a certain brand is. The people who are actually into cars are just a niche market.
And even who are into (sporty) cars have negative feelings towards the Yaris name, and often don't even watch a Yaris or even a Toyota video.

Would the result be the same between a new Yaris GR for 30k and a bit vs an early used 2009/2010 GT-R for the same money?
The GR would beat a 10 year old GTR by more - owning a 10+ year old GTR could become a real money pit too
Considering how fast you have to countersteer in the GT-R when the backend steps out, imagine if the Yaris with it's short wheelbase would do the same.
is the GR yaris wheelbase really short?
@@hoomee7605 2560mm compared to the 2780mm of the Nissan. That is a significant difference.
So you have concluded that on a tight, very slippery track where power is of no use the lighter more nimble car wins. Hasn't Initial D been teaching us this since the late 90's?
This is a stupid test the yaris has better tyres for wet conditions and is almost half a ton lighter than the gtr and has softer suspension so it doesn't lose traction when you go off curbs and throw it in corners, the gtr is at full disadvantage for many reasons, way too much power to put down in such a tight and wet track and bad tyres for rain and the heavier body makes inertia forces affect it harder so it loses control and its hard to recover because of the stiff suspension...
Can we have a rematch in dry conditions, same track, same cars please ? later in the year please

180k Nismo vs 34k GR. And GR is not tenths faster on a short track, but a whole second. Would it be many seconds faster on a longer track ?
I own a GR but reality is that only won because of tyres, the GTR was on semi slicks and had no grip in the wet compared to the PS4s. Around Tsukuba it's 7 seconds a lap quicker than the GR.
