We need a bigger sized hat, those flex fit doesn’t fit thicc headzzzz😩
Dyno run the golf. In the UK they are known for producing more than stated power from factory
You've graduated from the Sunday cup to the Clubman cup... These episodes are real life Gran Turismo 3!
Right
I was going to comment about the tire scrubbing sound - I always thought that was unrealistic in Gran Turismo, but it sounded exactly the same! Crazy.
With real life gran turismo budgets...
Good times remembered
Bro! I was thinking the same thing. That’s funny. I feel like there’s a shirt opportunity there. ✌️
That Golf hauls off the line like a supercar!. But seeing the Yaris catch up and out-class the Golf in the corners was impressive! Looks like a seriously fun little car, that I'd say is a real future classic!
That AWD and DSG do make a difference.
@@mitchjames9350 there both all wheel drive.
Wouldn't mind seeing them compare these to the i20n and i30n
@@mungers88 The Hyundai would be good cause of it price but it front wheel drive.
An Audi S3 or BMW M135i would be a good comparison as their both all wheel drive.
The Yaris can take off much quicker than it did in this video.
2 of my favourite cars there. There's something about that little Yaris that really floats my boat though. Really want one.
They’re a blast, however: Brake pads are soft and ferrous which causes the grooves in the discs to rust and make scraping noises.
Either the clutch, the centre diff or both are made of pure cheese. Mines making a hideous noise when pulling away whilst warmed up, after just 18k of motorway miles, and Toyota basically don’t wanna know.
Toyota don’t seem to be willing to do anything about all the interior rattles that developed within 10k.
The tyre is roar at motorway speeds is laughably bad unless you’re running the circuit pack Michelins. I personally don’t like how vague they are.
@@Jonathan_Doe_ How vague they are?
@@kjph7438 They have an insane amount of grip in the dry on perfect tarmac, but they don’t give you much feedback at all, audibly, through the steering wheel, or through your a** in the seat… When they do let go in the dry it is controllable with the throttle/steering but it’s quite sudden.
Their cold wet grip isn’t the best either… But that’s not a bad thing in the GR, because 260hp isn’t really enough power to have much fun without provoking slides with Scandinavian flicks.
I’ve driven both hard and I actually prefer how the base model tyres break away from gripping to sliding on most road surfaces.
Want both got a seat Leon cupra instead 🤣
@@Jonathan_Doe_ 😂
and you can actually get a more track focused gr yaris, the circuit pack. With torsen front and rear diffs, much grippier tyres and stiffer suspension.
It's called the Ralleye in Australia.
Yuss I have one
Easy enough to whack that stuff on yourself and probably cheaper
@@izzy031096 you don't just "whack" on front and rear diffs. You have to take the gearbox out and open her up. Not exactly cheap - and first you have to buy the upgraded hardware.
@@matthewp9015 There is this YT channel where two guys just have loads of fun modding their cars. Mega drive improvement or something. Maybe they'll try.
The DSG transmission in the Golf is one big advantage also.
And also the major negative. No real car enthusiast wants to drive an auto.
@@jeanblue8424 well no. The future is auto.
@@al151 no it’s not.
@@al151 the end is near my friends. And by “end” I mean manufacturing on large scale will cease. Only easily repaired and manufactured items will live on so I hope you have an old carb car
DSG is only an advantage to people who can’t drive. Gen Y & Z mostly haven’t even learned to how to use 3 pedals properly, because of the lack of manuals in this country & the simple fact that they grew up on playstations & X-box’s, so most of them don’t have a clue about shifting & pedal techniques. But around a track the difference is negligible to someone who can heel & toe, left foot brake & double de-clutch.
Sport mode on the Yaris sends 70% power to the rear while track mode is 50/50 front to rear. As long as you're on the power then track mode should be more stable, but it will be a bit looser going into the corners without stability control keeping the back in check. So in track mode you end up with more rotation during turn in, and then more stability powering through the corner.
U test are bias. Yaris is faster track car
the version of the GR Yaris tested in this episode did NOT include the circuit pack which allows you to change drive modes. it comes by default with no LSD and 60 front 40 rear split torque. I would personally enjoy seeing a rematch with a Yaris that does include it and a manual golf r so we can credit the machines and not the drivers
Standard GR Yaris still gets the different drive modes? He literally mentioned changing modes in this video. Also there is no manual golf r in Australia
That little Yaris is an absolute weapon and the Golf R just does golf things so well while being stupidly powerful.
I feel like the Golf R compares more to a Corolla GR, which isn't available yet... And the Yaris GR compares more to a Polo R or GTI since a Polo R doesn't exist...
Here's to hoping this happens sometime in the future!
Yup, Yaris looks like a heap of fun (never thought those words would leave my mouth), Golf looks like it has "Waftability", great in the city or on the highway.
@@vergaerd Unsure about that, the Corolla GR has marginally more power, no extra torque and lots more weight. GR Corolla = GR Yaris’s fat brother
@@vergaerd GR corolla is basically a GR Yaris. Only reason the corolla has a bit more power is too move a larger car. Both are technically the same.
That's just not true. The Corolla chassis is completely different, the front and rear suspension is completely different, and one is a 5 door hatch while the other is a 3 door hatch. The only thing they have in common is the drivetrain. I expect the Corolla to be faster on power circuits and slower on technical ones. The longer wheelbase of the C will help with high speed stability, though
To say the Golf is DSG and the Yaris is a manual, this is insanely impressive.
Good argument against the expensive DSG. I'm impressed that Toyota stuck with the good old manual box.
@@whatsstefon Then put the manual in a melbourne traffic jam .i will take the DSG.i have owned both manual and DSG and i would NOT own another manual,
@@MrRonan3 I use to live in Sydney. Always driven a manual. Each to their own. I think there’s no denying there’s one thing Sydney does better than Melbourne, that’s traffic jams.
@@MrRonan3 to be fair there isn't much point in either of these cars for urban traffic and stop/go commutes
but if your trip takes you 20min on an empty B-road to get to work I'd be overjoyed with a manual over a DSG.

You guys think you can get it both cars on a dyno and see how much their numbers reflect the official specs?
This^^^
Previous generation of Seat Leon Cupra (2017-2021 I think) was sold as 280 HP (when it was introduced, they were increasing the power over time) but on the dyno it made around 300. I guess the Golf will have a few more ponies over its spec as well.
Like all other mfgs, they tend to water down the real true HP/TQ rating. Idk why that is.
@@Hakuna_My_Tatas Taxation. 20 extra horsepowers means several hundred euros worth of taxes being slapped on the price of the car.
I think I've seen a video of this. If I remember right the golf r actually have somewhere between 340-350 hp

The way he described the Golf's predictability in its oversteer was exactly how I felt about my GRY in fast corners in sports mode. It still has an understeer tendency but when you can kick it out a bit the control of it always feels composed
Drove GR-Four Yaris today. Amazing car, short and wide, punchy, fast, changes direction like a rally car. Even the sound is good, despite 3-cylinder turbo.
The sound is ok tbh besides that oh my oh my
It sounds good BECAUSE it’s a triple. They sound better than inline 4s which is the most boring engine configuration aurally.
3 cylinders sound better than 4's
Driven one too, and got one on the way. I am surprised anyone can form an opinion on the real engine notes without an ear horn.
The noise in the cabin feels nice but it's piped in, but it's one of the more pleasing versions I've heard
go listen to the built gr Yaris motive made, it sounds like ass
This is really informative! You should do this more often. Most channels only do drag races, but driving on track gives a much better look at the performance of a car.

Wow just got a new subscriber. No frills, no wasting time with long winded fluff, straight to the track. As an MK5 owner, this is the content i want to see!!
I would love to revisit this with the GR corolla vs the golf
GR Corolla might do worse given it’s bigger and heavier than the GR Yaris, despite its 32hp increase…
@@JacesOwnWorld maybe but its the same size as the golf. The yaris is polo size
@@MaffoGodLike the dimensions aren't much different. I think the Yaris is slightly wider but slightly shorter. It's very minimal. You know the Yaris is a corolla chassis on the back half and yaris chassis on the front half.
@@JacesOwnWorld So its like the Golf R

this has been a super fun series, thanks guys, been subscribed since the before times. keep it up.!
More track battles, especially great for a dedicated 4 wheel drive channel.
I'm curious how the golf would do if it had a manual gear box instead of the DSG
In the US they get manual. Over here we only get DSG
Considerably slower!
It will definitley be slower with a manual gear box. Golf 8 is a great car, i own a cupra leon st witch is pretty simular to the golf 8. both real fun cars ✌
I’m curious how much faster the MK8 Golf R would have been if it didn’t weigh 600lbs more than the GR Yaris 👍
That’s like saying I’m curious if the Yaris had the same power as the golf? It’s not really logical.
I love this kind of video where you get to see the strengths and weaknesses of each car. Would love if you guys kept track of your times to compare to some of your older projects like Supergramps or the Evo against newer cars like the Yaris and Golf R.
What's so amazing about the Golf R is they just do everything well. They are such a balanced package. There's really no compromises in any category.
You get a very capable sports car that you can really put down respectable lap times with, yet you still have a ton of practically, comfort, and solid feeling build quality.
And they're very reasonably priced as well.
Awesome! Now imagine that race with a proper set of tyres on the Yaris 😍
Andddd…if Marty did a proper western Sydney launch. Limiter and release… 😅
I'd tend to assume the fancy AWD system wasn't made to hole-shot the thing like that.
Doesn’t Marty has some Cup 2’s on the Yaris? They changed the tyres a few episodes ago.
@@Blanc777 ahhh must have missed that okay makes sense now!

@@OllamhDrab myself and others have punished our GR’s with a high rev launches at events over and over again. For longevity a slip launch is ideal but also chews the clutches which a few have done also.

Can't wait to see this revisited with modded cars. We all know the golf sees insane performance increases with mods... That Yaris though... As Hawkins has shown us, is a freaking beaaast
I’m keen to see how the GR Corolla would do in these situations, hopefully you guys give her a crack when she arrives
with marginally more power, same torque and lots more weight it’s going to be like the Yaris’s fat brother
The Golf R has 320PS and the GR Corolla has 300PS, so the Golf would beat the Corolla all day. The better race would be between the two GR cars and I would put my money on the GR Yaris!🤘
@@antonthompson7838 I dnt think you watched this video. More power doesn't always equate to winning on the track. The Corolla is more capable in handling. And if the Yaris can keep up with the Golf in the bends with less power, the Corrola will do better.

Love the work you guys do keep it up amazing video and congrats on the new merch i CANT wait to get my hands on some !
Watching this reminded me of why i LOVED old school aussie touring cars at Bathurst, when it was Falcon v Torana.
You'd always see the falcons tearing away up the mountain gaining a handy lead, and then across the top of the mountain the Torana was so much quicker through the turns, and they would eventually be back where they started by the time they crossed the finish line, so it was a constant back and forward and usually came down to driver error. BUT unlike now, it may come down to driver error, but its not the same when EVERY car is basically the same car except for the tune.
With the lap times being effectively the same, it would be cool to see what professional driver could do.
Marty vs moog in the Yaris comparing times against each other. We need this for comparing the drivers handicap between the drivers.
1600ccvs2000cc?
Being a Mini guy, seeing how people have been getting more power in the Yaris; and subsequently taking them to the Nordschleife to pass everyone is just awesome.
Would love to see you guys do another round of audio videos good quality car audio isn't dead! would love to see your breakdown and expertise on all things audio and car audio. learn about all the intricate little details like gain vs volume, etc... Love your stuff guys
The content I’ve been waiting for. Would love to see the Yaris go up against the STI. And the gr corolla against the golf r once it’s released
Id love to watch these comps. Also i think the GR corolla is more suited in the mk8's class.
That Yaris is crazy! Keen to see what the incoming GR Corolla will do🤟🏽
& this is the base model GR Yaris, the competition package would be faster again.
I think you guys should put out two videos a week, one racing like this and another one modding stuff, love it!
Awesome battle. Really cool to see how different engines and platforms act on the same track, and how close they come together!
Hey MCM. If you still have the Focus RS, it would be fun to see the difference between the Golf and that car, as they are both clever AWD cars with roughly the same power.
Yes!! I look at these two and wish Ford was still doing the Focus RS models, they look and drive sooo coool
Take focus rs anyday over the golf
@@cybersteel8 💯 better than the Yaris and golf
I think they have an RS3 too.

Who knew...... a small light weight purpose designed rally car can out handle what is in reality a comfortable fat hatchback...... and a 2.0 litre 320bhp 7spd dsg hatchback can out drag a 1.6 manual hatchback with only 260 bhp albeit a bit lighter.... I would have thought those conclusions were bloody obvious before the test lol!!!
1 year after a bazillion of the same reviews…

Exactly, well said. That circuit is little more than a kart track, a circuit with longer straits and faster flowing corners would see the comfortable family car Golf easily pull away.
Always a great day with new mcm content!!
the version of the GR Yaris tested in this episode did NOT include the circuit pack (you can tell by grey-colored brake calipers and non-alloy wheels and drive mode selection not being shown on video) (Rallye in Australia) which allows you to change drive modes. it comes by default with no LSD and 60 front 40 rear split torque. I would personally enjoy seeing a rematch with a Yaris that does include it and a manual golf r so that we can credit the machines and not the drivers.
Torque split is adjustable on ALL GR 4 equipped GR Yaris.
Be interesting to know what tyres both are running, as I’d say the Yaris is running more track focused tyres and tyres make a massive difference
I think they use same set of tyres here. But the thing is, that yaris really is quicker in corners. You can watch this car in nurburgring taking on much faster car
Also, this is the base model GR Yaris, the competition package has even better brakes and front and rear LSD, so would haul even harder through the corners.
@@Beer_Dad1975 the circuit package comes with 18” alloys Michelin Pilot sport 4s. Those tyres would make a huge difference

Sport and Track still have some assists. You have to get it into Expert for all assists to be off.
Sport or Track just defines the power distribution to the AWD system.
Can confirm , looks like the auto break aka pcs kicked in, which can be removed in expert mode
If you hold the esc button off for 5 seconds it let's more slip than expert mode. There is another level above that which is is essentially a dyno mode but that requires a 'pedal dance'.

Interestingly enough watching the short snippets Marty seemed more on the racing line and had better control over where the car was.
Marty (from watching vids) seems more technical but cautious, while Moog is more loose and aggressive.
Golf R is $72k, GR Yaris is $50k or 55K for Rallye version with BBS 18s, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres and a Torsen limited-slip differentials, Add Litchfield Stage 1 Remap and Milltek 3" Exhaust, and you get 310 hp in the GR Yaris Rally for 58k.

GR Yaris is insane for a 3 cylinder
In power mode im impressed totally
Next time I’d like to see you two switch cars and see, I feel like the Golf R could of been pushed harder and smoother through the corners. Great videos lately!! Keep these tracks days coming!!!!!!!!!!
They did when they tracked them solo, and the times still remained.
A bit hard to tell from the video, but the Golf R can be pushed out of the corner a lot earlier then you might think. The rear differential only works under engine load - so you can actually get back on the pedal right after braking and placing the car and correctly done, it will push you out of the corner with the rear outboard tire, eliminating understeer that you would have in the same situation driving a GTI.
I love the track comparisons without having to sell one or the other.
Beautiful hot hatches!
Love seeing "normal" production cars going round tracks!
That accerlation in the golf is nuts! I wasn't expecting such a huge leap compared to the yaris, for a bigger car as well, im suprised it handles the corners like a champ. Love the yaris!
The gearbox and launch control are immense. People getting sub 4 second 0-60 in the R
Key word is DSG
Yup it’s insane. People have recorded 0-100 in 3.9 seconds in stock form. This is just incredible.
yup, the manual is way slower, which is understandable, but let us not be fooled as VW has a reputation of publishing lower HP specs than what their cars actually make.
We need a Mk8 vs the GR Corolla (When is available)
The Corolla is 400 pounds heavier with 32 more HP which means down on HP to weight. It is not a purpose built 3 door chassis either. It is a Corolla with more welds. If the Yaris could not beat the Golf R the Corolla will get walked. The Yaris handles so well because of its size, the corolla will be the same size as the Golf.
@@shawncarr9855 We don't know until someone test the car in the real world, and if loses its ok.

What were the tire specs on both of these? The Yaris comes standard with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. The most important tool needed for a track is correct tyres. Cornering and braking all come from it. The Golf would have done so much better if it also had a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres on.
actually this is the "base" yaris wich has pretty crappy dunlop tires. The trackpack adds pilot sport 4s, front and rear torsen diffs, forged wheels (2kg lighter per corner) and stiffer suspension

@@tt-rs1457 Not really, the GR Yaris was design to go racing, and is based on it own platform which is why it is a homologation special, the Golf on the other hand is based on a mass produced platform with notice to do with motor racing at all.
Thanks for the test on the track !!! Next time you sould do the same with the GR Corolla.
You guys should have a chart in the mcm shed showing the best times on each of your cars like what they had on top gear.
Yes to this!!!
I would love to see an i30n on this channel considering how cheap it is compared to these two
Not an awd hatch, much better to compare it to a renault rs or type r or clubsport
The DCT in the Golf is just insane and it absolutely flies off the line but I'm still so happy to see the Yaris be overall faster around the track
Thanks, now I don’t need to watch lol
Sweet vid, thx for sharing ... ever considered a GTI front clip swap...
^^^ Mainly suggesting it to see how easy it be to change up since I like the GTI styling but need AWD for the Snow weather months ...
I would like to know what tires you both were using and I can see you held back on turns not going fast.
The ‘circuit pack’ GR Yaris would destroy the Golf R, and 90% of GR Yaris sales are ‘circuit packs’. You raced the standard car against the quickest Golf, it would have been worth mentioning that in your video.
It makes no sense to buy a gr yaris without a circuit pack
Overwhelming majority of Yaris sold here don't have the circuit pack.
@UCO_or2gMIOQ1CbhRnOc7QZA There is no option on a GR Yaris, you have to buy the Rallye trim level. Majority of cars sold here have been base Yaris GR.
Period.
@@Jaredscott89 any proof that the most cars sold here are base?
One of the reviewers said in a gr Yaris video that Toyota in Australia say more than half of the buyers chose the circuit pack on the gr Yaris, and looks like you don't know much about the car either, circuit pack isn't an option of Rallye, Rallye and circuit pack is the same thing, it's just called circuit pack overseas, it costs about 5k more than the base Yaris which starts at 49k, so not alot of money for alot of extra bits, front and rear diffs, better breaks, lighter aloy wheels and sports suspension
@@shivamarya5225 Toyota sales numbers.
Don't really give a toss what some random "reviewer" said.
I didn't claim the circuit pack was an option.
Rallye and circuit pack aren't actually the same thing. Rallye comes with those performance parts standard, but is not the same as an overseas GR Yaris with circuit pack. The cars are contented differently between regions.
Considering the Golf is much heavier and not as track focused, it did really well
Agreed. I love both cars but i think people forget the yaris is much more geared toward track than the R.
Yeah, imagine the Golf with a few suspension mods to correct the understeer/oversteer it gets in some of those corners
i30n would eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
@@boygonewhoopdataZZ No.
@@boygonewhoopdataZZ in your dream 🤡
yeah that top straight I would get a little sideways as well, nice track. good race boys.
This is an excellent review of both cars! I… Want them both!
You aren't pushing these cars to the limit, come on! You can afford it.
Had a 2010 Yaris, now have a 2019 Yaris, want a GR SO BAD, Toyota can keep their Corolla, BRING THE YARIS GR TO THE STATES
I am in the UK. I ordered a GR Yaris Circuit pack in June 2021. I was told my car would be with me in 12 months. I was then told my car would be with me in March 2023. Now they are saying it might be delayed even more....I WANT MY F'n CAR DUDES!!!
Great little series guys if I was to own a hatch back it would have to be one of these 2 little nuggets
