They’re a blast, however: Brake pads are soft and ferrous which causes the grooves in the discs to rust and make scraping noises.
Either the clutch, the centre diff or both are made of pure cheese. Mines making a hideous noise when pulling away whilst warmed up, after just 18k of motorway miles, and Toyota basically don’t wanna know.
Toyota don’t seem to be willing to do anything about all the interior rattles that developed within 10k.
The tyre is roar at motorway speeds is laughably bad unless you’re running the circuit pack Michelins. I personally don’t like how vague they are.

@@kjph7438 They have an insane amount of grip in the dry on perfect tarmac, but they don’t give you much feedback at all, audibly, through the steering wheel, or through your a** in the seat… When they do let go in the dry it is controllable with the throttle/steering but it’s quite sudden.
Their cold wet grip isn’t the best either… But that’s not a bad thing in the GR, because 260hp isn’t really enough power to have much fun without provoking slides with Scandinavian flicks.
I’ve driven both hard and I actually prefer how the base model tyres break away from gripping to sliding on most road surfaces.

Sport mode on the Yaris sends 70% power to the rear while track mode is 50/50 front to rear. As long as you're on the power then track mode should be more stable, but it will be a bit looser going into the corners without stability control keeping the back in check. So in track mode you end up with more rotation during turn in, and then more stability powering through the corner.

DSG is only an advantage to people who can’t drive. Gen Y & Z mostly haven’t even learned to how to use 3 pedals properly, because of the lack of manuals in this country & the simple fact that they grew up on playstations & X-box’s, so most of them don’t have a clue about shifting & pedal techniques. But around a track the difference is negligible to someone who can heel & toe, left foot brake & double de-clutch.

Watching this reminded me of why i LOVED old school aussie touring cars at Bathurst, when it was Falcon v Torana.
You'd always see the falcons tearing away up the mountain gaining a handy lead, and then across the top of the mountain the Torana was so much quicker through the turns, and they would eventually be back where they started by the time they crossed the finish line, so it was a constant back and forward and usually came down to driver error. BUT unlike now, it may come down to driver error, but its not the same when EVERY car is basically the same car except for the tune.

The yaris is something in a class of its own, it is up there with the most extreme homologation specials ever with almost nothing in common with the regular model, and is probably the last homologation special that'll not be a hybrid, and maybe even the last ever true homologation special. Even though it'll never race in the series it was designed for, it doesn't matter, because covid preventing that is an interesting history and it marks the end of non hybrid wrc with a true rally car for the road. They're a great investment car, that will be reliable, and just as practical as other cars its size, so is useable as a daily driver, and its lack of depreciation will far outweigh any extra running costs over something less fun. They're not getting quite as much status as they deserve as such an iconic car, but that'll soon change and prices will go to the moon.

@@tt-rs1457 Not really, the GR Yaris was design to go racing, and is based on it own platform which is why it is a homologation special, the Golf on the other hand is based on a mass produced platform with notice to do with motor racing at all.

I still prefer my Stage 2 Mk7.5 R, it’s insanely quick in a straight line and really comfortable and practical. I have a Camaro SS 1LE and that is my track car, I never plan on tracking my R.

    • @xpictos777
      @xpictos777 2 года назад +1

Wrong. Defeats the purpose. The point is to have a practical car that competes with “sports” cars in a straight line and on the track. If you’re going to go 2 door you might as well get a true sports car.

@@xpictos777 a hatchback with 2 doors is still practical. If you would have people in the backseat so often that the 2 doors become a problem then why aren't you getting something more suitable for rear seat passengers like a sedan or wagon?

You Guys have done almost all the Yaris things I've wanted to. Half my life ago I tracked a 98 Mercury Mystique LS with SVT mods and it would regularly embarrass a c5 corvette an S2k a Turbocharged 350z and my buddies Gold GTi. Now on the street I couldn't do much.. 170hp manual sedan only do so much but a 2800lb car well balanced on Falken rubber was pretty hard to beat on short track. That said my brother wouldn't race me with his T/A or Mustang...

I own a GR and had a phase 1 A45 prior then an m240i. The R in dsg format is what you would want day to day, the GR is a legit focused weapon but its less an all in one car.

At a glance it seems like the Golf R is right where it's always been, in every iteration. It's never been as "weapon" as something like the old Subaru WRX STI or the new Yaris GR, etc. It's always been the better compromise for a car with a nicer ride/build quality/comfort, etc. I think that makes it the more appealing car for a larger part of the market, but not the choice for dedicated hoonage. I actually sold a Mk IV R32 (the original Golf R) to a rich dude who owned several Ferraris and other super cars. He wanted a cheap run about which was nice enough and sounded good...and the R32 was his "daily" for grocery getting, etc.
