Toyota GR Yaris meets Honda Civic Type R | Which is 2020's best hot hatch? | Autocar

- The new Toyota GR Yaris is a giant slayer of a hot hatchback. We love its rally-inspired four-wheel drive traction and its astonishing grip.
But does it have the measure on the road of our favourite hot hatch of the moment - the Honda Civic Type R?
The GR Yaris joins us with the optional Circuit Pack, which means it costs £33,495. It has 257bhp from its 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine, which makes it good for 0-62mph in 5.5sec and a limited top speed of 143mph.
The 2020 Honda Civic Type R is a Limited Edition. Lighter and leaner than the regular Type R, it costs £39,995 and has 316bhp from its larger, 2.0-litre turbo engine. More powerful, then, but being front-wheel drive, it hits 0-62mph in 5.8sec, though can go on to a 169mph top speed.
It's the Toyota that has been making the headlines recently but only a mug would write off the Honda, which is such an enjoyable and engaging hatch. Watch on to see what we think.

I've been fortunate to own both. Very very hard to say which is better overall. But just to give you an idea, there's a reason why both are priced similarly new (50-55k) and why they're around that same price even used, almost zero depreciation, 50-55k, because they're similar levels of fun and both are awesome to live with and I have no doubt you'd be very happy with either. Some things are objectively better though. On Yaris, AWD wins drag races and acceleration in the wet, the tech is better in some ways (infotainment is decent, auto stop-start, lane keep works at a wider range of speeds, HUD is awesome, speed limit detection and warning, blind spot monitor, better sound system and an actual audio equaliser) and being slightly higher and softer helps a lot for a daily. On Civic, bigger boot, 4 doors and more space and visibility are very highly appreciated, better interior build quality with less scratchy plastics, soft door armrest, and a central armrest with storage, and nicer digital dashboard, NVH slightly better, electronic parking brake with auto hold and the drive mode selectors and the front n rear parking sensors are very nice bonuses, 4 cyl is smoother, punchier, more rev happy, and definitely easier to drive day to day with better ability to short shift (3 cyl is a bit more prone to stalling and doesn't like RPMs under 1500 whereas in civic 1200 it's quite comfortable staying there, this is for smooth driving and not spirited driving, pls don't lug engines). As for the juicy stuff, driving. I think they also have their pros and cons (copout answer sorry...). Civic is longer, wider, lower, and stiffer, automatically this makes it feel more planted and stable, seating position also nice and low, gear changes very satisfying and notchy, steering is very direct and confidence-inspiring, honestly a joy to drive at any speed! I feel like i can do faster cornering in the civic, maybe it's the low position that makes it less scary, and maybe the suspension and wheels are set up in a way that they grip better, IDK, but it's easier to drive fast for sure. It's also super flat when turning, changing lanes quickly, etc, so feels sportier and more planted. The engine is very punchy especially once you're rolling. I'm sure the civic will win more rolling races than Yaris, because of less drivetrain loss and of course more power and torque, but this is for speeds 50kmh and above. At lower speeds like 30kmh, going full throttle on civic will spin tyres 100%, even in dry. In wet, it can spin tyres even in second/third gear at like 80kmh lol. But man, power on the highway is just so plenty, that turbo kicks in HARDD! Haven't faced much understeer in the civic, and in a few instances it actually oversteered a bit, which put a massive smile on my face back then. No torque steer in the dry either. Yaris is much more compact, higher and softer. In tight corners, you could probably turn a bit better at lower speeds, or at roundabouts and smaller streets, but at faster bigger corners not so much. It absorbs bumps much better and feels less of a shock to your spine over potholes (it also has smaller wheels so more meat on those!), and being AWD it's not upset by those undulations, whereas the civic would torque steer at uneven surfaces or wet roads. The AWD, man, it's so confidence-inspiring! In the same way, the chassis and suspension on the civic make you comfortable at driving faster, the AWD on the Yaris makes it super breezy to drive it hard at sub 100 or sub 80kmh speeds. There's nothing stopping you from flooring the car off the line, in the wet going straight (not recommended at bends in the wet!!!), or in slow-moving traffic once you find an empty lane. It has never wheel hopped on me, well, actually only once when I was testing the handbrake decoupling mechanism, put the handbrake on the first notch (enough to trigger the sensor and disable the rear axle but not enough for the brakes to clamp) and floor it, it wheel hops, and it just reminded me of the embarrassing times I tried to drag race others off the light in the civic only to get a handful of wheel hop, but to be fair the continentals on the civic were about 3.5yrs old so, not in their prime. You can still take corners fast in the Yaris, just not as fast, and the higher seating position makes this harder (note that my Yaris has Goodyear eagle f1, not sportmaxx). The steering on Yaris is nice, just not as communicative or direct as civic (I'm sure suspension stiffness has a large role to play here). Gear shifts are very nice, almost as nice as civic, you wouldn't know the difference unless drove them side by side. I think civic shifter is shorter and more notchy. The clutch on civic was better and more progressive, I feel in Yaris it grabs harder and the biting point is shallower if that makes sense. So civic was easier to drive smoothly and leave from a ditch (in normal traffic). The engine in the Yaris is a gem, very punchy and feels like it's always ready to go, but after like 80kmh you start to notice that it's 30hp less than civic, and maybe some of this is due to drivetrain loss too, but off the light, it's punchier and doesn't bog like the civic. It feels less rev-happy than civic, idk why, I tend to stay away from 6k rpm and above. Sadly, rev hang is there more so in Yaris as its flywheel is heavier, so I wait a bit more to release the clutch when upshifting, and the same for auto rev match it's a bit slower, but it's still good on both and I use it daily. When driving slow, Yaris isn't so fun as much as civic. Everything is nice and comfortable to use, but I feel like the Yaris needs to be pushed a bit more to be enjoyed. But I don't mind pushing it! Smiles per gallon, right? Both cars are phenomenal, both are head-turners (civic more so due to crazy styling), and people try to race you all the time, Yaris looks more subtle, I like the civic's front more, but the Yaris rear more. Braking is similar in both. Consumption is similar on both, 8.5 on Yaris and 9 in civic. Yaris taillights are all LED and look super nice, civic still uses clear lens and halogen lights for some reason. A lot of these cars' problems can be solved with mods, whether it's cosmetic complaints, handling, power figures, sound and exhaust noise (they sound similar on the outside tbh). Both cars have aftermarket exhausts, so I never complained of exhaust notes. Both cars have issues to be aware of, civic the crack-prone massive wheels and the 2nd gear crunch, the Yaris with its questionable transmission reliability and the possibility of engine damage with overrevving and valve float etc... I haven't faced any of these 4 issues really, and I hope you never will. In summary, the civic lap times and cornering speeds are better, and Yaris drag racing and grip levels are better. Both are beasts in their own way and will put a smile on your face when you get in, I certainly feel this way every time I drove anywhere really. The main things that separate these 2 are AWD vs FWD and sub-compact vs compact size. Do you want a larger car that handles better? Civic. Can you live with a smaller car, live in a wet area and really appreciate drag races and floor your car all the time? Yaris. I fall in the second category. Oddly, I'd take the Yaris as a daily over the civic (this is an unpopular opinion) but I feel that softer higher suspension makes speed bumps less scary, AWD makes it zippier in traffic, and interior tech makes life easier. Civic would be my choice for backroads and tracking (I have not tracked either sadly), but still was very comfortable to daily, very accommodating and better NVH, it's just the lower and stiffer suspension mean that I scraped the front more, and FWD meant I spun the wheels more, but being able to drive faster at corners, being able to fit more things in boot, and being more fun even when driving slow, it's something I miss. Super hyped to experience and watch reviews for the new FL5 civic and the GR Corolla! Maybe one of them will replace the Yaris.
This is just my opinion and you're more than welcome to disagree! I'm not super knowledgeable about the mechanical aspect of things nor familiar with tracking and driving these at ten tenths, I just speak from the heart and from my experience owning these for a few months (civic 6mths, Yaris 2mths) and taking them to the Black Spur Drive here in Victoria (hint: they were both super fun!). Let me know if you have any questions and I'll answer them to the best of my ability!
Honestly I found more answers in your beautiful comment than in the video. I love both cars, but driving it daily on bad roads (60-70% in the city) and the rest on backroads and having fun, I feel the Yaris GR is better suited. It would like a love child of both cars, a Type R with awd, but thats not gonna happen. I am trying to pre order the new 2024 GR Yaris, so hopefully a good choice.
I drove a GR Yaris today, all I can say is the car has two physical states parked and WARP DRIVE. 😶
It's a truly ridiculous machine.
When I first saw this Honda R I thought it looked a bit over done with all the spoilers and angles but now it has really grown on me
So you put them together, you put the video title like it's a versus, and then you say what you should have said from the very beginning that they are not natural rivals. Well, I get it, but a video like this with so much talking and not even a bit of comparison in performance, acceleration, whatever...
Another crap video. With dull commentary. And bland driving.
Yep, was a waste of time watching it.
Agreed

Saying the Type R is the “Porsche GT3” of FWD hot hatch is quite a compliment. The CTR is hard to beat since it’s such a game changer.
It took the reigns from the old Megane RS 275 Cup
It is indeed a huge compliment. Both great on dry summer roads like we get all the time inUK....

@@Jordan-ql8pv Yep, driven one on the freeway...no probs. Could go all day in it.
Yes definitely 😊
Having had my 182 Trophy written off recently, I've had a test of the usual suspects (GTI, Type R (standard edition) RS Meggy, i30n, A35) had my test in the Grrrr yesterday and spent an hour and change hooning round the Peaks in the fog and rain. Utterly ridiculous thing. If you want 3 adults in the back and a big boot, or will be doing mainly motorway miles, go for the Honda or the Meggy (although the latter getting a little expensive for what it is now when you start ticking boxes on the spec sheet.) The top two gears don't pull as hard for mile tests, but would you rather have a quieter and more frugal time on motorways or be able to do 170 on a track with a long straight once in a blue moon?) You can poddle round town in a civilised fashion, but once you're in the boonies (where I personally do a lot of my driving) the figures don't reflect the oomph this thing has. In the damp on a slightly uneven road, 0-60 was about 4.5 or 4.6 Dread to think what it'll manage in the dry when run in. What the tuning houses could do to this with a new intercooler and exhaust? 350, maybe 400 out of a 1.6 it could be the peak of internal combustion engineering effeciency. The 0-100km "slow" speed is down to gear ratios and having to change up to third for the last 2kmph. Although not a limited edition in the same way as this lightened Civic or my poor old Trophy, production is only planned for 25k units worldwide. They may have to extend this. Lead time for a car that only had demonstrators appear a week ago is now pushing Q3 next year. I've been fortunate to drive some interesting and quick cars over the years (pug t16, Escort Cosworth, WRX STi, S2000, mk2 GTI 16 etc) but I've never put my money down so quickly as with the "Yaris." With the inevitable push towards electric, I genuinely feel this could be the last car under £50-60k that's powered by dead dinosaurs that will let you have B road (and track) fun to this degree.
Wow! Materializes a lot of my thoughts, cheers!
Nice comment. I have scheduled a test drive next weekend and look forward. I need a new car for my wife and she never use the car in the weekends 😉
Man I want them to bring the Yaris to the US so bad.
Same here, but I doubt we will ever get it though. The profit is in CUV/SUV’s and they would just lose money in it, by bringing it here.
Your better off, you can get a zl1 1le camaro for 50k, which does a 7:15 on the nurburgring, supercar fast that is. Or a c6 z06 monster for 35k. Much better than 1.6 3 cylinders
@@user-hc5si5tw5p but boring as hell to drive anywhere not on a track. And the camaro has almost zero outside visibility. Tanks have better visibility. Most cars like that spend all there time under 4k rpms on normal roads because otherwise the drivers get arrested and the cars get impounded.
@@Xander1Sheridan a car that takes corners faster than Ferraris with 600 rear wheel horsepower and manual transmission at 180mph on the ring is not gonna be boring. If u want rally just buy a 3k scooby wrx on the side lol. I doubt most supercars have good visibility or comfort on the roads but I don't care because I'm getting world class performance

@Don Lee They purposely styled the Civic that way so only people who are serious drivers buy them. Like me :)
@@richiebtime489 or people who want to look like boy racers will buy them. I don't want to be constantly pulled over by cops and checking if I illegally modified my car. And tbh, a serious driver isn't going to buy a CTR only on the merit of its drive. There are much more focused hot hatches, and there are much more pure driving experience cars available. It's a shame it looks how it is, because I think it's quite practical and great in reliability.

How can a car that costs 1/4 of the average house in the UK be considered ‘affordable’, in some towns in the north you can pick up,a house for 40k!... finance has made car prices crazy... they are double what they should be.
What did you expect - £5995 for a CIVIC Type R ? And houses cost £40k simply because the area is like a bombsite..
Agreed, for me these two cars should be around £25k. I prefer to buy a car rather than finance it and living costs haven't gone down, nor have salaries increased in several parts of the economy. Also you can buy a nice civic type r for £5995, a maligned n/a Fn2 with LSD and a circa 240bhp map. Plenty fast enough for the road, great noise and drivetrain. In reality, I can't imagine any real world opportunities for an Fk8 or GR to lose a well driven Fn2 even if it only does cost £5995.

Fantastic video, love my Fk8, amazing to drive. The Toyota is special too. fun fact, the type R was designed first and the turned into the regular car.
Hi, could you please compare the car with a stock EVO, 6,9,10? is it better?

How would a a45 on the B roads compare to the Yaris
Haven't tested the 45, but have tested the A35. I'll be honest, the Merc would easily beat this thing on a large track, but in the damp on slightly bumpy B roads (which is where you can still enjoy a car in this country) I feel the car that costs half the price when specced out would leave the German machine rather embarrassed.

I think Honda could have made the Limited Edition even more focused by giving it a power hike (around 350BHP) ditched the rear seats, made some bracing to the shell and sold it for around 5k more. I'm sure this would smash a few more lap records and be some kind of ultimate FWD machine.

Should be but the focus is built down to cost of production... Yaris seems to be built to Toyota’s CEO’s demands.

It's simple really, the Civic Type R is touring-car like and the GR Yaris is rally-car like but sanitised
I hope the Yards is more exciting than this presenter.
Why aren't there any shots showing the body of both cars properly?!? We see a image of them side by side completely blurred out?!? All other shots are either front or back. No side or 3/4?!?
The only thing tested here was my patience. Leisurely driving on b-roads while at the helm of two beasts is pretty poor going.
As a single car I would choose Type R , much more useful on a daily basis and enough power and fun factor. If I would have two cars then Yaris as a second car.
The sweets spot today is the hot hatches.
Just taking so much pleasure on b roads in my megane 3 rs cup.
It's 'spot' not pot.
@@mattyoz0 thank s, the French corrector on my phone...
I'll take the GR YARIS please.... Better looking and seems more functional too!
It's not more functional.
More functional with no rear seats...
The type r is closer to to something like a megane trophy r, the yaris is in a class of its own
Honda need to make another s2000. A 9k 4 cylinder turbo. I'm sure they could compete with a gt4!
So to conclude the civic feels special at slow speeds as well as quick but the Yaris feels special all the time? Ok 👍
Yaris GR 😍
Yaris GR. Please.
I don’t understand the Porsche analogies yet glad these both exist in the absence of a Focus RS whilst the current WRX STI appears very dated in the markets it is still sold in
The comment at 1:40 saying the normal civic looks like it was meant to be a Type R. They designed the entire car around the Type R and worked backwards this time around, so that does make sense and I think the normal civic looks a little unusual (not bad, but different)
Sorry, I love Autocar but there's just too much pointless fluff with this reviewer as usual.
It's a GR Yaris not Yaris GR you fools
I LOVE the Honda Civic Type R so much I bought one. It really is a car that deserves all the praise it gets. The GR Yaris is no slouch. Sadly, the decision was already made for us here in the States because we don't get the GR Yaris. If you are in the UK or the rest of the world where it is offered, enjoy it! I am so glad these cars exist. In the wake of the electric future and the more restrictive regulations coming for internal combustion cars, if these are cars you like find a way to buy one more sooner than later before car manufacturers are no longer able to make them. This golden age for the driving enthusiast is almost over :(
Yeah, this. Get 'em before they're gone forever.
Edit: Congrats on the Type R! I would so love to own one of those. At the moment though I'm aiming at the 1.5 version.
At least you’re getting the Corolla GR so it’s not like you’re missing out.
@@AutoBears Thanks. I am eagerly waiting for more information on that car but things have been silent. I guess right now Toyota does not want to take focus away form this GR Yaris which makes sense.
When did £40k become affordable? All you guys maxed out on credit?
When your single - HA -HA Ha
No A/C? Reminds me of the accord type-R I bought in 2001. No A/C means it's lightweight sir. haha
How about the Renault Megan????
FWD, cup tyres, ultimately a warm dry weather car. Compromised in damp.
@@gaycha6589 40 kilos saved is nothing really in this civic. Theyre saying its the best hot hach ever. Its definitely not in my eyes. Id rather a used golf r or s3
@@gaycha6589 Megane doesn't wear Cup tyres, not even optionally. The S001 and S007 are better in wet conditions than the Cup tyres on the Yaris, not sure what you're talking about.
The Toyota GR would look great in that Honda Civic yellow.
No radio, wtf
You can ‘get’ one of those options in McLaren’s and Porsche’s for a ‘small’ fee 🤦♂️
@@jamest5149 porsche doesn't charge for radio or ac in the gt4, gt3 (rs) and gt2rs
@5:08 "but what it does have" *bottoms-out suspension*
No, that was a cat being sucked into the air intake
2007 Audi S3 8p, £7k, mops the floor with the Yaris :p
The standard civic doesnt look weird at all!
There exists a scenario wherein a loaded yaris gr can cost the same as a base model civic r and I'm sorry but the civic can double as a 4 seater grand tourer with an interior that borders on exotic. Fascinating as the yaris is-and the track pack version appears to be a potential cross-class pound for pound champion-we can't soon forget that the civic was the fwd Nordschleife record holder and also exists in the nether world of out running more powerful cars with awd, rwd, dct's in summary all comers...p.s.-I would have differentiated the two gr yaris's via a longer final drive I would have attributed to the non track pack yaris similar to how disgruntled mavens of the Cayman gt4 view its gearing as uncomfortably tall. The narrower anti roll bars and propensity to initiate body roll would perfectly accentuate taller gearing..
Bit of a cop out on the verdict..
Hond in the front is ok but so ugly behind. But as a drivers car is very good. But the yaris is spot on.
