She is a ghost telling her story, just as he as the killer is telling his. When she was found, it wasn’t known who she was, but because she was murdered where the wild roses grow, they called her the wild rose, but as a ghost she was telling saying her name was Eliza Dane. I’ve always thought the song was set in the 1800s, but that’s just my impression.
The way I have always interpreted the Wild Rose lyric is like when a murder victim is found and they give them a temporary name until they know their true identity, like Jane Doe. To me, she was speaking from the grave telling people her name. Hope that made sense.
That’s how I’ve always heard it too. She was the first of the Wild Rose murders and she became known as the wild rose, and her dead self can’t understand why she’s being called that. Classy songwriting.
100%
Spot on.
It's an Irish urban legend!
Nick Cave is beautifully dark. Violence, love, sex, god, obsession…his favorite themes. He’s an amazing storyteller.
You should watch the video. It's beautiful. Inspired by Ophelia by John Everett Millais.
Both Nick and Kylie are Australian =) Nick wrote this song inspired by a traditional song called Down in the willow garden with the same theme. He has released a full album called Murder Ballads where this was one of the tracks on it.
one of many wonderful songs off the album Murder Ballads
@Fable, go check the official music video, the story is told much clearer there and you will see she has a ghost like appearence =)
I was a bit disappointed it wasn’t the MV for it but a great live performance
Cave was inspired to write "Where the Wild Roses Grow" after listening to the traditional song, "Down in the Willow Garden", a tale of a man courting a woman and killing her while they are out together.
Oh boy, Nick Cave can bring some crazy reviews, haha! I happen to be a big fan but recognize he is not for most people. Looking forward to your reaction to this one!
I alsway interpreted it as she was called the wild rose because her body was found amongst the wild roses with a rose placed between her teeth. And its as if her ghost is saying hey my name was Eliza, I'm a person, not just my death.
And yes, it's definitely a duet of victim and killer.
Murder ballads/songs are a side genre of folk music, often found in Scandinava,Germany and UK, think it also can be found in some Country music.
Excellent choice!! I had tickets to see Nick Cave in 2020 here in Nashville before it was indefinitely postponed! One day!
@@sarahanderson8635 Hope to see him live one day, had hoped Fil would have chosen the official video cause the story would have been clearer but it was interesting to see and hear Fil only go by lyrics as well, like the rock part u pointed out in ur comment 😂
@@MrTombre agree, the official video shows what is happening better but his face was fantastic!!
@Jules R Hi Jules, this is actually his 2nd, you will find a reaction to Mercy Seat in his playlist =)
In hell I’ll be in good company- the dead south - another fun song about murder
Nick cave omg omg omg. Have you heard O Children by Nick cave?
Omg yes Fil you’ve got to do that one, such a beautiful song I get chills every single time I hear it just from the choirs alone
@@jagodarakowska9418 facts
Love O Children. Nick Cave is brilliant.
Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue were both born in Victoria Australia.
I never realized they actually did this one live. God I wish I'd been there.
I saw this live but with Blixa doing the Kylie part
Thats why the Album where this song is titled "Murder Ballads" , don't expect nice behaviour in the lyrics from the main characters ;)
HOLY. SMOKES!!
I CANNOT BELIEVE you are doing Nick Cave!!! I’ve been looming around your channel all weekend, gobbling up your TØP reactions and just popped up to see what you were doing currently. Nick Cave is in my All-Time top 4 and no one ever knows who tf he is (in my life).
Yes! The stories are often twisted, but PLEASE stay with him! This song is from the album Murder Ballads, where someone perishes in each song. It’s not always that dark. But what it IS, as with the songs by Tyler Joseph, it is poetry of music. Cave paints a story like no other. I just know from spending this twenty one pilots time with you that you will dig this artist.
He is a powerhouse performer, but his voice always sounds best on the studio recordings. May I suggest the song Straight To You? The best songs to start with, IMHO, are on the albums Henry’s Dream, Let Love In and Murder Ballads.
Love your shit and look forward to discovering more gems under your guidance. You make me feel seen.
When you recover from this song, please try the official video for Henry Lee. Same back & forth duet style, and this time with an artist he was actually falling in love with DURING filming.
Fable has also reacted to Mercy Seat =)
I love yours reactions they brighten my day an make it special thanku Tom love the vocals thanku special Fil much love and God bless always x
From the album Murder Ballads...
Very different but I must say I liked it.. Thanks Tom
Cool =) check the official music video Kim, its a piece of art itself
It is in the style of the old murder ballads - like Lord Randall
Your face at the rock part 😳😂😂😂
I couldn’t WAIT to see him take the dark turn! I knew he’d never see it coming.
been on vacation a week, came back and watching it again and his expression is still priceless 😂
Nick Cave and the Bad Seed’s “Murder Ballads” is an amazing album. I’m pretty sure the song is fictional, from the perspective of both a murderer and his victim. Murder Ballads are a form of folk song, there are many that are hundreds of years old that have been passed down from generation to generation. Another good song from this album is “Henry Lee” which features PJ Harvey.
@The Fable Sphere please react to Kylie Minogue - The crying game medley on the Fever tour live. Thank you
Try “Stagger Lee” or “ O’Malley’s Bar” next or even “Henry Lee” - all off Murder Ballads, my favourite of his many albums.
Fil, as Tom said below. One of my favourite folk songs, Young Waters, could also be counted in this vein. It is an intresting concept as you say.
#QcumberSquad #NickCaveAndTheBadSeeds #KylieMinogue - Fil, I'm off back to the study.
It's from the Murder Ballards album, I think the story is even more sinister. He knocked on her door, and and entered her room, she was scared. I think he took her and held her hostage.
Nick Cave grew up in my hometown in country Victoria. There was a rumour that he said he would only come back if they erected a statue to him. I assume if he did say it, it was a joke. There really isn't much to do or see there.
It's not a true story. Nick Cave was inspired by another murder ballad 'Down in the Willow Garden' (I've never heard that song). Yes, the song tells the story from the perspective of the murderer and the victim. Calling her 'the wild rose' is based on where her body was found. It's like calling a murder victim Jane Doe- they don't know who she is. Very haunting song.
Australian 💕💕
Strangely this is a relatively gentle song compared to some of Nick Cave's other songs...
Please please react to some pj harvey🙏🙏 youll love her!!
Welcome to the Murder Ballads. Nick cave is dark and Beautiful. Like Edgar Allan Poe
You think this is twisted, you should listen to The Carny.
HEADS UP! Figured this was the best way to get your attention. Grace VanDerWaal's new song, Lion's Den, is dropping 15 July! Just thought you'd like to know.
Thanks very much for that. I'll make sure I'm on that
@@thefablesphere Here she talks a bit about the motivation behind the song
