Fun Fact: When it was decided that Nick & Kylie was gonna collaborate in this song, Nick was over the moon excited cos he adored Kylie. On the other hand, Kylie had never heard of Nick Cave before 😅😂🤣
This was an Australian match made in heaven. In 1996 when it was released, it gave the super cool, genius songwriter Nick Cave the popular exposure he thoroughly deserved and the "street cred" pop star Kylie Minogue sorely needed- at that time, at least. You have to admit, few people can write a song that is both as dark, and lost in time, as this.
This from Murder Ballads. A truly beautiful album. Some of the most creative, disturbing music you'll ever hear. Nick Cage is amazing at this kind of song. The whole album is mind blowing.
What always stood out to me about this song is that it is true that victims often get called by a particular thing that was notable about the way they died or were found, and not remembered by their name. Thus the 'They call me the wild rose, but my name was Elisa Day." Also pretty good from the Murder Ballads is his duet with P.J. Harvey called "Henry Lee"
This one is so astonishing! The dark, but somehow beautiful lyrics together with this perfectly romantic music merge together to form a real experience for the listener. Great piece of art, Kylie and Nick!
Nick cave biggest selling song in the U.K. and Australia because Kylie minogue is a really big massive superstar and iconic legend in the U.K. and Australia and Europe
This male character is so intriguing in his mentality. Like there's a cycle for him in which he appreciates beauty and then fulfills an idea that all beauty must die.
He doesn't kill the beauty. He preserves it. He uses it. He took her where the wild roses grow. And planted another one. Literally. Not just a stem and flower all romantic like as we see in the video... Literally planted another bush, in her, to preserve her beauty in a transformed way. Good fertilizer, those pretty girls. And the field of wild rose bushes just kept on growing. At least that's my head canon.
Cave was inspired to write "Where the Wild Roses Grow" after listening to the traditional song, "Down in the Willow Garden", a tale of a man courting a woman and killing her while they are out together.
This song changed how people look at Kylie she look mature as an artist in these kind of songs and also song like confide in me this song took her to another level Nick cave voice is unbelievable

I would almost say that the second day isn't a confirmation that the magic is gone but instead a confirmation of her beauty. The last verse shows this mystery man as someone who believes all beauty must die, so he's ensuring a universal truth (in his mind) comes to fruition.
The video is highly cultured: it's a visual rendering of "Ophelia", a painting by the pre-raphaelite artist John Everett Millais inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet.. And have you noticed the white bunny? A clear reference to "Alice in Wonderland" (such a clever allitteration Eliza/Alice was) but used in a dystopian sense. Genius.
I don't think he disposed of her because he was done with her. I think it's more of a obsessive jealousy issue. He says it himself, that she was more beautiful than any woman he ever seen. He just didn't want any other man to look at her or enjoy her beauty. That's even more sad and creepy if you ask me...
I would almost argue that it is obsession but not obsessive jealousy. The man says "all beauty must die," so I would more lean that he has way with her and then seduces her down to the river where he completes a cycle.
I don't think in this case it is a careless disposal of a girl after using her. It doesn't really fit the acting of Nick and the lyrics. It seem that he sees it as a kind of duty to kill her in that happy moment letting her die young and beautiful. It is really one of the most disturbing songs i know
This song reminds me of a book by Yukio Mishma, The Temple of the Golven Pavillion. Both sories are about men who worship beauty so much they need to destroy it.
You should try to stop talking so much , your spoil the flow of the song for yourself, all the better reaction videos are when the person speaks less and tells us what they think after .

It's Nick Cave, not Nick Cage.
@@Raghnaid Damn auto correct.
Murder Ballads is such a great album!
One of my top 3 albums of all time. It's perfection.
Cave is a lyric genius.

Their voices go so so well together, especially love Nick's low harmony during the chorus
Creepy indeed. But a beautiful song that gets stuck in my head.
"On the third day he took me to the river" vs. "On the last day, I took her were the wild roses grow".....

Noteworthy how quite a few of the most beautiful huge hits through time are stalker/creep songs, often wrapped in beautiful words.
Every Breath You Take is an excellent example.
Cave was inspired to write "Where the Wild Roses Grow" after listening to the traditional song, "Down in the Willow Garden", a tale of a man courting a woman and killing her while they are out together.
murder ballads/songs are a side genre of folk music, often found in Scandinava,Germany and UK
Thanks, I didn't know this

Thanks for continuing the Nick Cave journey, Suzette!

I remember my sister showed me this song and i absolutely loved it
I love this song so much
Yep very creepy, from their Murder Ballads album.
Beautiful dark song!
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' - 'The Curse of Millhaven' is imo the best song of the Murder Ballads album, well perhaps second to this one.

Aaaa one of my favorite songs
Totally epic
Love Nick Cave ,never liked Kylie's music but she totally killed it on this song! Good reaction. 🏴
And also in confide in me
This song really lets both singers just really flex vocally.
Diane by Theraphy is another hunting but beautifull song

It's a beautiful song about the strange mindset some people have..
such a gorgeous track

Pls react to "Henry Lee" (Nick Cave n the bad seeds Ft PJ Harvey)
My fave video music, PERIOD 😁
... 🎶 for my name was once a day.. 🎵
Murder ballads dude!!
I heard at the time Nick was desperate to do a duet with Kylie. She finally gave in. That and to get into her pants.

Did you recognize Kylie Minogue @ all? These characters were based on true stories.
