Sorry to hijack an old post. This is simply two people seeing the world through different eyes. She sees the beauty, he sees the selfish and ugly. In debating their stance, she starts to cry. When she does this, he sees it as justification of his argument. Cave is the greatest lyricist of our generation...
I think it's his Brazilian wife he's talking about, a woman raised in a different, less caring place than what he was raised in. Yet she's pragmatic about the world and he thinks it could be different, thats where the sadness comes into it. The part where he said "and when she turned her head away great tears leaping from her eyes, I couldn't wipe the smile from my face as I sat sadly by her side" he's smiling I believe because he realized in that moment that she isn't really some cold hearted woman, that she does really care, but life is too hard to concern ones self with the troubles of others. I could be wrong but thats what I get from it
Such a delight when you give us Nick Cave. Thanks, Tom! Just saw him do his storyteller style piano only solo tour and the power of his songs, words & voice was stupefying. The piano lick in this particular tune is devastating. Loved the discussion on this one.
Your breakdowns are something else ..you make me understand everything ..this was incredible sad yet beautiful ..Tom did it again amazing thanku so much love an God bless always x always from Cyprus x
I found this a while back from writer Tony Dushane about the song: Earth is a bleak planet and the majority of humanity is selfish, each following the compulsion of their id. All you need to do is look out the window to be disgusted at the theater of the human race. Yet, leave it to Nick to create a beautiful, romantic ballad to capture the essence of our world of shit.
Bit late here for this one, but great choice Tom. Such a profound song, probably my favourite song from No More Shall We Part, along with Darker With The Day.
I like your reaction style. I just listened to the album for the first. I wanted to check out a reliable review. I wasn't going to listen to the album again because it's so dour. But this song has lots of interesting lyrics.
Fil, another classic from Nick. Always thought provoking and eloquent in his use of the English language. Nick paints with large, yet delicate brushstrokes. #QcumberSquad #NickCage&TheBadSeeds - Fil, I'm off back to the study.
2 ways of looking at the 'I couldn't wipe the smile from my face' line. She (probably his wife) has just given him a verbal beatdown saying who are you to criticize the world and so he's sitting there forcing the smile and trying to pretend not to be upset about the state of things. Alternatively (and what i'm more inclined to believe) is that after telling him off she has started crying, and so he is smiling because he knows he won the argument and she sees the misery he has observed also. Either way, it's not a good smile. Whether forced or smug, smiling in the face of such misery is hollow
Keep in mind that she spoke last before she was crying and he was smiling. She said that what happens beyond the glass is none of your concern, that god gave you but one heart, and god doesn't care for your benevolence, but the lack of it in others, god doesn't want you to sit in judgement of the world he created, but to love the life that you do have, don't focus on tragedies piling up around you, ugly, useless and OVER inflated. The image I get from this song, is a son or husband sitting at his dying mother or wife's bed, and she's trying to tell him to be thankful for the time they had together, Earth and moon, and sun and stars and comets with tails blazing, all up there falling lovely and amazing.

This song makes me cry every time I listen to it, and I've been listening to it for many years.

I like that theory. Whatever it means (the lyrics), it's beautiful.
I don't understand the lyrics but it's beautiful nonetheless. What you say sounds like a good explanation.

So true unfortunately
I agree too.
Nice one, Tom.

I got introduced to him from watching Peaky Blinders. Great show and great soundtrack😊

She realised the folly of her beliefs and started crying. He is smiling because he believes he won the argument.
I agree =)

The captions on the video are hilariously wrong. Those aren't the lyrics.
I know... When I was reading them they seemed ridiculous. That's just YT generating what it thinks it hears.
@@traktician It's def improved over time, but it was butchering key words. I would suggest having the lyrics open on Genius in a small window.
