Saw him at the last concert in Belgrade, Serbia. It was the best live act I've ever saw. He throws everything he got, loves his audience. Big respect to him and his art, and yes - I call it art :)
I love BP since 1981, lost some neurons since, but now I put Nick Cave on a pedestal: the only one which makes si powerful and sensitive music with incredible lyrics. Unique. and the BS have evolved from tough white blues to a kind of music nobody thought about 25?years before. Mystic white blues which raises up listeners to sky, heaven and human weaknesses. Watch NC face: his smile is priceless 5:26
It's about a jaded cynic and an optimistic woman he likes. She tries to tell him the world is beautiful, he says it's ugly and sad. She argues that none of the stuff he complains about really affects his life at all, and there's nothing righteous about passing judgement on the rest of the world while you sit and stew in your own miseries. He smiles at the end while she's crying because he's moved by her response.
Well as I see it its because she finally sees the world as it is and understands that he's right so that's when she cries. His smile means that he's happy that she finally gets why he cares about the people and how they treat each other and not just about the beautiful part of the world. I think because as she says "sorrow's piling up around you" she understands how Nick feels about the world and the people living in it. Because after all "People Ain't No Good"
I think the smile is there because he won the argument and religious belief no matter how hard it tries cannot change the world. The smile is not only there for winning the argument though, I think he likes the naivety in the woman's worldview, and he loves her...maybe because of this too. In Sad Waters there is a line that goes like this "forever a hostage of your child's world". The poet, which he is, sees the darkness better, for he has explored it more fully, more realistically.
Thats how I imagine Chopin before his illness overwhelmed him. IDK I'm not an expert in any way but the way he exhausts himself in front of the audience to deliver his often said or at least very emotional message, his long dark hair and his skinny body which is dressed perfectly it all fits very well. Anyways I love both :D
Does anybody still remember Sting collaborating with Rod Stewart and Bryan Adams for the Robin Hood OST in 1994? Image Nick Cave collaborating with Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. Would kick ass, so to speak.
Both characters in the song are parts of a single mind, the song is an internal conversation. When we look at the universe as a whole we see unimaginable, breathtaking beauty but when we fixate on any one part we are overwhelmed by inexplicable, unjustifiable ugliness. When those two modes of thinking interact the transcendent perspective is brought down while the imminent perspective is elevated.
Where in the name of the abyss was this and where was I? I caught Nick and the seeds at the Chi town Theater, but good lawd.. this is where it's at for fucks sake!
@clearwaymj It's on youtube though...i watched it like 2 days ago, although you said this 5 months ago, os it is priobs just been uploaded since then, haha

amazing, leaving you breathless! But, what about that two verses Then she smiled and turned to me and waited for me to reply... and one more later? are the lyrics i've found wrong?

this song is so wonderfully sad, thank you Nick for this masterpiece of melancholy
Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Tom Waits. Father, Son and Holy Ghost!
Yes!
Yea sir....
Subtract Leonard (who I love dearly) and swap in Dylan, and that's my personal Trinity.
Mark Lanegan!
and Blixa as Virgin Mary ? ;-)
great live version of a wonderful song... music & lyrics ... nick cave gave all his best in this song and ended up with a masterpiece.

What a what a marvel, all in fervor, simplicity, the expression of a man struck by melancholy 💙

I think he smiles also because with the last sentence she just proves his point by contradicting herself. Anyway, one of my favourite songs ever.

true... one of the best ones
Zbilja zanimljivo.
Redovito dolazi u Hrvatsku, mozda je to razlog.
Perfection? Yes.

music freaking GENIUS!
Apparently the "No More Shall We Part" album was distributed by Warner subsidiary Reprise in the states, so WMG took it down shouting "MINE!!!"
Earth and moon and sun and stars
Planets and comets with tails blazing
All are there forever falling
Falling lovely and amazing
Falling lovely... and a m a z i n g.

Man, when you'll go down to your eternal journey I bet that the ferry man will play the violin
Naj bolji pesnik 20. i 21 veka.
Yes he IS!
Bargeld's leadguitar is raw beauty!
Love!!
No comment about his deep emotions.

I feel the exact same way.
prao dobra stvar!
Magnificent song ! But there is something I don't understand, why does he smile at the end, when she cry ?
He's amazed by her pondering, smiles in pride.
